D8 Monday: Picks

YTD D8 Picks:  19-2 (.905)

Just two games:

Monsignor Doyle (4-4) at Resurrection (5-2)
My Pick:  RCSS
It's "good news, bad news" for MDCSS --- good news being that they are now in the playoffs, bad news being that unless they can upset RCSS or SBCSS (and/or get some help), they're on a collision-course to play St. Mary's in the semifinals.  I don't think they'll get past Rez here today.

St. Benedict (4-3) at St. David (2-7)
My Pick:  SBCSS
The Saints should pick up the road win here today, provided they aren't overlooking the Celtics in advance of their final two games against playoff teams.

CWOSSA News and Views: Expanded D8 Junior League

After a few years of a 6-team league, the D8 is expanding for this coming season ---- but still with "familiar faces".

The Woodland Christian Cavaliers will be back for the first time in quite some time (7-8 years?).  Nice to see the interest in basketball peak back up at the traditionally strong volleyball school, as Woodland hasn't fielded a team since 2008-09 in the D4 league (3-5).

Meanwhile, the PRDG Chevaliers will also make an appearance in the junior league.  PRDG will not be fielding a senior team this year (they did last year), but one of their senior vets from last year, Dylan Floyd, will be a player to watch.  Floyd played a key role on that PRDG senior squad despite being only in grade 9.

If you add in the Rockway Flames, that means there are 3 "A" schools vying for a CWOSSA berth.  Should make for some exciting games, and I'm sure Rockway will appreciate the company after having a tough go of things last year.

Early indications are that the D8 will be a fairly wide-open league, with the St. Mary's Eagles having the inside track should star Mike Blumel return to the junior program.  The Resurrection Phoenix have some nice size, including 6'5" football star Andrew Pickett, while St. David will be coached by Dave MacNeil who has a few of his Wildhawk club kids entering grade nine at SDCSS.  Despite a few key graduations to the senior level, St. Benedict can't be overlooked either and will be seeking a trip to their 2nd consecutive D8 final.

WCSSAA Junior: Vikes, Crusaders Set Stage for Undefeated Showdown

Props to the schedule maker.

The WCI Vikings and Waterloo-Oxford Crusaders will enter the final game of the season with identical 11-0 records, after posting respective victories on Thursday night.

I just may have to come check out the "new" Green Machine for myself on Tuesday (no offense St. John's, you're still pretty darn good....).

On Thursday, W-O took out Huron Heights by a 69-25 final, backed by 12 from Madison Horst and 11 from Alisha Glendinning.  Amanda Madigan (13) and Jenna Gangl (4) were the top Huron scorers.

Meanwhile, in a defensive struggle, the Vikes got past the Jacob Hespeler Hawks 32-23, with Isabella Kellerman (10), Danielle Sauve (9) and Brittany Scarrow (7) leading the way.  Candice Wright (8) and Jasmine Ramcharan (4) topped the JHSS scoring.

Here are the rest of Thursday's results:

Bluevale 48, Southwood 27
The Knights officially clinched a playoff spot with the win.  Kailee Sawyer (17), Leah DenHartogh (10) and Julia Curran (10) led the way for Bluevale, while SSS' Taylor White scored 21 of their 27 points.

Cameron Heights 51, Preston 30
The Gaels moved one step closer to a playoff spot themselves with a key win against PHS.  Hunter Johns (16) and Omnia Osman (11) were in double figures for Cameron, while Breanna Johnson continued her strong play for the Panthers with 12.   Hayley McGoldrick added 6 more for PHS.

Eastwood 42, Glenview Park 33
The Rebels keep their playoff hopes intact with a win over Glenview.  Mel Samuel poured in 13 and Kayla Shantz added 9 in the win, while the Panthers had 11 each from Josie Mackrow and Jocelyn Kivell.

KCI 49, Forest Heights 43
A big battle here between two "upper echelon" teams goes to the homecourt Raiders.  Frances Campbell (15), Alia Hazineh (12) and Ady Bowra (11) were all in double figures for KCI, while Tameika Elliot (game high 19) and Shannon Scott (8) led the Trojans.

Elmira 33, Grand River 23
See my comment from the previous game, as the (now) 9-2 Lancers take out the (now) 7-4 Renegades.  Nicole Cressman had 11 and Kelsie Freeman 9 in the win, while Mackenzie Miller had 8 and Caroline Lorkovic 6 for GRCI.

SJAM 37, Galt 26
SJAM pulls out a key win against Galt, thanks to 15 from Sam Fowler and 9 by Safina Husein.  Megan White (9) and Kadija Mohamed (7) topped the GCI scoring.
So, with that we have the following standings.  Note that the top 4 spots (first round byes) are now locked up, but the positions themselves are not yet secured.

WCSSAA Junior Standings
T1.  WODSS 11-0**
T1.  WCI 11-0**
3.  Elmira 9-2 (H2H win over KCI)**
4.  KCI 9-2**
-----------
T5.  Jacob Hespeler 7-4*
T5.  Forest Heights 7-4*
T5.  Grand River 7-4*
8.  Bluevale 5-6*
T9.  Cameron Heights 4-7
T9.  SJAM 4-7
T9.  Eastwood 4-7
T12.  Southwood 3-7
T12.  Huron Hts 3-7
14.  Glenview Park 2-9
T15.  Preston 1-10
T15.  Galt 1-10

** - clinched 1st round bye
* - clinched playoff spot

What a logjam in the 5-7 spots, as well as 9 through 13, with nothing set in stone just yet.

Looking ahead to Tuesday:

Glenview Park isn't out of it just yet as they have a game against 1-10 Galt in their finale.  They must be kicking themselves for losing last week against Preston, BUT they do have key tiebreakers against the teams immediately ahead of them --- Southwood and Huron Heights.

Therefore, if GPSS wins and either of SSS (KCI) or HHHS (JHSS) lose, Glenview Park will be in.  Southwood has the tiebreak over Huron Heights in the event of a three-way tie.

Confused yet?  Good, that's just the 11 through 13 spots.

Cameron Heights, Eastwood, and SJAM will all officially clinch with either a win in their respective games, or a loss by Southwood OR Huron Heights.

Bluevale is locked into the #8 spot.  They can't move up or down; even should they lost to FHCI, they do hold tiebreaks over all of the current 4-7 teams (ECI/SJAM/CHCI).

The #5 to #7 spots are a little more interesting, but JHSS has beaten GRCI and GRCI has topped FHCI for tiebreaks.  All three teams will be favoured in their finales, with FHCI having the toughest task against Bluevale.

WCSSAA Senior: Panthers Clinch First-Round Bye With Road Win At Cameron

The Preston Panthers had a pretty successful week.

After squeaking past the Jacob Hespeler Hawks (8-3) on Tuesday, the Panthers received another solid effort from Kirsten Leach (18 points) en route to a 55-43 victory on the road at Cameron Heights.

The win moves the Panthers to 10-1, and officially solidifies them as one of the league's top 4 squads.

Cameron Heights, meanwhile, are looking at (likely) 6th place in the standings if they don't beat Eastwood in their final regular season next Tuesday in a great rivalry game.  Regardless, this year should produce some very competitive quarterfinal matchups.

On Thursday, Ashley White added 12 points alongside Leach's 18 for Preston, while Cameron was led by Liz McLellan (17) and Ashanti Lewis (12).

Here's the rest of Thursday's WCSSAA senior action:

Eastwood 46, Glenview Park 28
My Pick:  ECI
The Rebs received 22 from Michelle Hudyn as they cruised past Glenview on Thursday.  Lindsay Ward added 9, while GPSS saw Alyssa Goodridge have a solid outing (16) while Maggie Tucker added 5.

Forest Heights 47, KCI 39
My Pick:  FHCI
A competitive game that could potentially be a playoff preview, depending on how things shake down next week.  The Raiders held Blair McNaughton relatively in check, as she didn't lead her squad in scoring for the first time this season (still finishing with 16 points).  Teammate Sara Potter, though, picked a great time for a breakout performance with 18 in the win.  Olivia Nelles (12) and Andrea Bowra (6) led KCI.

Elmira 54, Grand River 39
My Pick:  EDSS
The Lancers' Krista Wiens was on fire on Thursday, pouring in 29 points as the Lancers picked up a key win to stay in the hunt to host a first-round playoff qualifying game.  Jessica Reichard added 7, while GRCI's scoring details were unavailable.

WCI 74, Jacob Hespeler 38
My Pick:  WCI
The Vikes taught the youthful Hawks a couple of lessons on Thursday, with several WCIers in double figures --- Lindsay Lessard (21), Alex Klein (15), and Julia Pavlik (13).  Taylor Dennis and Brooklyn Wright had 12 each for the Hawks.

Galt 43, SJAM 38
My Pick:  GCI
The Ghosts control their own destiny with regards to the playoffs after this win on the road against SJAM.  Milica Stevanovic had 15 and Suzanna Lam 8 in the win, while Malena McCrossan-Moses (13) and Jillian Reiter (10) topped the Highlander scoring.

Bluevale 44, Southwood 34
My Pick:  BCI
The Sabres gave the Knights a bit of a run on Tuesday, but BCI prevailed in the end.  Sarah Hamm (17), Natalie Bishop (12) and Shannon Curran (9) led the way for Bluevale, while a trio of Sabres --- Courtney Harley, Angela McLean and Maddie Brundage --- had 6 each.

Bye Win:  HHHS

And, we'll add in WCI's bye win next Tuesday in the below standings update....

WCSSAA Senior Standings
1.  WCI 12-0** (clinched 1st)
2.  Preston 10-1**
3.  Eastwood 9-2 (H2H over Bluevale)*
4.  Bluevale 9-2*
----
T5.  Jacob Hespeler 8-3*
T5.  Cameron Heights 8-3*
T7.  Elmira 7-4*
T7.  Forest Heights 7-4*
9.  Southwood 6-5*
10.  KCI 4-7*
11.  Galt 3-8
T12.  Grand River 2-9
T12.  Glenview Park 2-9
------------------
T14.  SJAM 1-9
T14.  Huron Heights 1-9

** - clinched first round bye
* - clinched playoff spot

So, as we look ahead to Tuesday, a couple of key games:

Eastwood @ Cameron Heights
Huge game here.  A Cameron loss will likely put them 6th overall, as Jacob Hespeler will likely defeat Huron Heights in their final game.  ECI has all of a sudden put them in contention for a CWOSSA spot after an early-season slip-up against Elmira.

SJAM @ Grand River
Playoff spot is on the line here.  A Grand River win would eliminate SJAM from contention, and likely put the Rens in the playoff (pending the result of GCI/GPSS).  A SJAM win, and we could have a very interesting tiebreak situation going on.

Glenview Park @ Galt
Glenview Park could leapfrog the Ghosts to 10th with a win and an SJAM win over GRCI.
The "ideal" situation (from a tiebreak perspective!) would be if Galt beats GPSS and Grand River takes out SJAM.  That makes things easy, with Galt having beaten GRCI, they would take 11th and GRCI 12th.

Things will start to get interesting if either GPSS or SJAM pull out a win!

We'll see on Tuesday......

Brantford Expositor: Teams Tune Up for Start of Basketball Playoffs Tuesday

By:  Gavin Grites

The Brant County girls basketball league wrapped up their 10-game regular season Thursday night with the St. John's College Green Eagles (9-1) and North Park Collegiate Trojans (8-2) earning byes to the semifinals.

As for the quarter-finals Tuesday, the Brantford Collegiate Mustangs (4-6) will square off against the Pauline Johnson Collegiate Thunderbirds (2-8), and the Assumption College Lions (7-3) meet the Paris District High School Panthers (0-10). Starting times have yet to be announced.

On Thursday, the Lions looked to be in good shape in their 65-29 win over the Mustangs. The Lions showcased superior ball movement and offensive execution, something Assumption coach Rick Heron was looking for from his team with playoffs around the corner.

"We're just looking for more consistency," he said. "At this time of the year, they should know all the plays by now. That's why we showed a lot of intensity tonight. I wanted to get all the plays in."
Jerika Baldin, who scored 11 points for the Lions, said that Assumption will need to continue to do the same things well against their playoff competition if they want to succeed.

"Run the court so they get tired, fast break the whole game and pass it around," Baldin said. "Hopefully, our shooting's on and everything will be good."

In their quarter-finals match against the Panthers, the Lions will continue sharpening their game, said Heron.

Megan Melling, who scored eight points for BCI, said the Mustangs season has been "pretty successful" considering some of the obstacles they had to overcome - a major one being the small number of players on the team.

"We didn't start out with a lot of players," Rachael Adkins added.

"We only started out with nine. And a couple got injured during the rugby season, which brought us down to seven."
Adkins, who led the team in scoring with 13 points, is returning next season. She called this season a "learning year" for the Mustangs.

It was about experience, getting as much basketball in as possible for next year," she said.

BCI coach Ron Jamula said he knows the Mustangs must content with the size of the T-Birds and their leading scorer, centre centre Chelsea Biggs.

"We'll need to defend and box out," he said. "(Biggs) doesn't make every first shot. If we give them only one shot I think we have a good chance."

"Our kids always play really, really hard," Jamula added.

"We're getting better defensively. We're getting better on offence. So, hopefully, we play our best game Tuesday."

SENIOR NPC (8-2) over PJC (2-8) 43-11. PJC outstanding players: Madeline Dailey, Erica Hewson, Zoe Wickson. NPC outstanding players: Reo Roland, Cassie Fletcher, Laura Chapple SJC (9-1) over PDHS (0-10) 37-15. PDHS leading scorers: Kenzie Coombe 6, Hailey Persall 4, Alex Forsyth 3. BCI leading scorers: Victoria Waud 14, Summer Sakaluk 10 and Lexis Lancaster 7 NPC (6-4) over PJC (0-10). Results not reported by press time SJC (10-0) over PDHS (2-8) 46-21. D10: Thursday Picks

YTD:  34-5 (.871)

There doesn't seem like there will be too many surprises on today's D10 schedule, but then again, there's a reason why they play these games.  So we'll see what happens with the following:
Bishop Mac (9-2) at Centennial (1-10)
My Pick:  BMAC
I look for the Celtics to respond with a strong effort after their Tuesday loss.  BMAC to win on the road.

Orangeville (0-11) at Guelph CVI (5-6)
My Pick:  GCVI
The Gaels should win this one, provides they don't overlook the ODSS Bears, who came within single digits of St. James the other day.

JF Ross (8-2) at Lourdes (5-5)
My Pick:  JFR
The Crusaders have been playing well lately, but I don't think they'll quite be able to get past the JF Ross Royals (though the Royals must be wary of a potential letdown after their big win over Bishop Mac).

Centre Wellington (9-1) at St. James (5-6)
My Pick:  CWDHS
Look for the Falcons to continue their winning ways on Thursday.

WCSSAA: Thursday Picks

YTD:  59-11 (.843)

It's the second-last day in the WCSSAA regular season today, and we have a bunch of teams fighting for first-round byes, playoff positions, and the final playoff berths.

Here's how today's action shakes down:

Galt (2-8) at SJAM (1-9)
My Pick:  GCI
Galt will clinch a playoff berth with a win over SJAM and a Grand River loss to Elmira.  I look for them to take care of at least half of that equation with a close road win today.

Forest Heights (6-4) at KCI (4-6)
My Pick:  FHCI
Dangerous pick here, as the KCI Raiders are playing very good basketball as of late.  FHCI by single digits, though.

Preston (9-1) at Cameron Heights (8-2) **Game of the Day**
My Pick:  PHS
Game of the day material here, as the teams enter play with a combined 17-3 record.  Although CHCI plays very well on their large home floor, I'll tag the Panthers to squeak through here.  A PHS win would clinch a first round bye.

Elmira (6-4) at Grand River (2-8)
My Pick:  EDSS
The Rens are desperate and better than their record would indicate.  Of course, I'm generally pretty safe with my picks so I'll go with the better team on paper here --- plus, the Lancers are fighting for playoff position and can't afford to lose (especially when it may impact a "AAA" CWOSSA berth).

Southwood (6-4) at Bluevale (8-2)
My Pick:  BCI
The Knights will take out their frustrations from Tuesday's loss on the visiting Sabres.

Jacob Hespeler (8-2) at WCI (10-0)
My Pick:  WCI
The Hawks may stick around early, but the Vikes are just too strong.

Glenview Park (2-8) at Eastwood (8-2)
My Pick:  ECI
Look for the Rebs to win this one, setting up a huge game next Tuesday against rival Cameron Heights.

D8 Wednesday: 'Stangs Lock up Playoff Spot, CWOSSA Senior Berth

Congratulations to the Monsignor Doyle Mustangs, who have clinched their first CWOSSA "AAA" senior playoff berth in a few years after topping the St. David Celtics 38-24 at home last night.

Marley Gray poured in 13 points in the win, while Leah Flanagan added 8.  Amanda Lutz netted 7 for St. David.

The win moved Monsignor Doyle to 4-4, while St. David drops to 2-7.  With a 10-game league schedule, the Celts officially cannot make the D8 semifinals.

The other D8 senior action on Wednesday saw St. Mary's improve to 9-0 after beating St. Benedict 47-27.  Kaitlyn Schenck had 24 in the win, with Natasha Stoyakovich, Laura Boterman and Celine Sukkel adding 6 each.  Dana Milani and Hilary Ferguson had 7 each for the Saints.

In junior action, scoring details were not available from source but we can tell you that St. Mary's beat St. Benedict 34-22, while St. David cruised past Monsignor Doyle 45-17.

Here's a look at the current standings, starting in senior:

Senior D8
1.  St. Mary's 9-0**
2.  Resurrection 5-2*
3.  St. Benedict 4-3*
4.  Monsignor Doyle 4-4*
-------
5.  St. David 2-7
6.  Rockway 0-8

** = clinched 1st place
* = clinched playoff spot

Junior D8
1.  Resurrection 7-0*
2.  St. David 6-3*
3.  St. Mary's 6-3*
4.  St. Benedict 3-4
-----------
5.  Mons. Doyle 2-6
6.  Rockway 0-8

* = clinched playoff spot

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

D8: Wednesday Picks

A couple of big games on Wednesday in the D8 senior league:

St. Mary's (8-0) at St. Benedict (4-2)
My Pick:  SMHS
The Eagles have wrapped up first place, while the Saints still have a lot to play for.  This was a 7-point game the first time around, and the Saints could pull the upset on their home floor.  I don't think it will happen, but it'll be interesting to see how this one plays out.

St. David (2-6) at Mons. Doyle (3-4)
My Pick:  SDCSS
I'll go with the Celtics here, in an absolute must-win for them.  A loss here today would (essentially) clinch a playoff spot and a CWOSSA berth for the Mustangs, who took the first matchup in a 19-13 slugfest.

Sun Times: Falcons Snatch BAA North Crown

Article By:  Bill Walker

A two-point win was all the OSCVI Falcons needed to edge out the West Hill Raiders for the Bluewater Athletic Association's senior girls basketball north division title.

So the four-point margin of victory in Tuesday's 41-37 win gave the Falcons a little breathing room and a chance to celebrate a division title on their home floor.

"As usual a very exciting game between these two teams," said Falcons coach Lee Jacques, whose squad needed the two-point victory after losing by one in overtime to West Hill earlier this season. "It seems like every time we've played over the past two years that it's been close."

The teams took turns making extended runs with OSCVI pulling ahead only to have West Hill pull even.
The Raiders took a 30-29 lead into the fourth quarter only to be outscored 12-7 in the final frame by OSCVI.

"You could see it. We'd make an adjustment and go on a run and then they'd make an adjustment to our adjustment and go on one," said Jacques. "It just seems to take the two teams about two or three or minutes to figure out what the other team wants to do and then they shut it down."

The game plan for OSCVI was simple -- keep the ball away from Raiders scoring sensation Maddie Lougheed, who still managed to finish with 20 points.

"It's not a secret that most of our scoring comes from two players (Christine Clark with 15 and Lougheed)," said West Hill coach Ken Lougheed. "It's always easier if you're the other team to play five against two.

That's not to say that we don't have other players but we have a lot of younger players who struggle to score sometimes. The ball has to go through either Christine or Maddie for us to be successful."

OSCVI's depth was the offensive key for the Falcons, who had six players score including Audrey Liskauskas with nine points, while Brooke Whetstone and Carrie Davenport both chipped in with eight.

The win means OSCVI wins the North Division and will play host to the BAA final four tournament on Nov. 10 providing that the Falcons win a quarterfinal game on Nov. 3.

"I think that's very important because we want to have home gym where our fans are cheering for us and it's probably not a big thing but we're used to our backboards," said the 17-year-old Liskauskas, who would not be surprised to have to play a rubber match with the Raiders in the BAA final.

"They're a top team and they want to win so I would absolutely not be surprised to see them again."

*** FLESHERTON -- Heather Richardson scored eight points as the Grey Highlands Lions beat the St. Mary's Mustangs 29-18 on Tuesday in BAA senior girls basketball action. Emily Lawter added six points for the Lions.  Sarah Aumell scored eight points for the Mustangs, while Kristen Eckert added five.

Katie Langdon scored 16 points as the junior Mustangs won 33-23.  Nicole Sutton added five points for St. Mary's.  Olivia Mcalpine led the Lions with six points, while Emily Bullock added five.

*** KINCARDINE -- The Kincardine District Knights swept the Saugeen District Royals on Monday in BAA senior and junior girls hoops play.  The senior Knights beat Saugeen 30-25. Jean Ann Keelan and Andrea Plagos each had seven points as Kincardine's juniors beat the Royals 42-19.

Brantford Expositor: With Win, T-Birds Look Ahead to Playoff Matchup

Article By:  Gavin Crites

With their 40-20 win over Paris District High School (0-9) on Tuesday night, the Pauline Johnson Collegiate Thunderbirds (2-7) are now looking ahead to their meeting with the BCI Mustangs in the Brant County senior girls basketball quarterfinals next week.

T-Birds coach Neal Stamer said his squad has been "really competitive" in both previous games against BCI.

"We're very comparable," Stamer said. "Whoever plays better that night is going to win."

Against PDHS, the T-Birds used their size to score points around the basket and turn away shots in the defensive end.

Centre Chelsea Biggs scored 20 points in the win. A lot of her points came from inside the paint or from the free-throw line. Biggs added a few blocks and several rebounds.

"We have some pretty tremendous senior students," Stamer said. "Chelsea (Biggs), Erica Hewson and Zoe Wickson … we're very proud how they developed."

PDHS coach Dani Hawkins said her team looked better this time out against PJ, especially in the defensive end. Paris forced a significant number of T-Bird turnovers in the open floor and around the three-point arc.

"We did a really good job position-wise on defence," Hawkins said.

"They're bigger than us and they're more aggressive typically. The last time we played them PJ got all the loose balls and most of the rebounds, where tonight we were getting our fair share."

Deven Knill, who had several steals and four points on the night for PDHS, gave credit to her teammates for helping develop her skills.

"Basically, all the girls have played since (Grade 9), so everyone's gotten better as a team ….Definitely this year is probably one of our better years," Knill said.

Julia Hmiel led PDHS in scoring with eight points, while Beth Stulen and Emma Perry each added four.
Hawkins said her Panthers have come a long way since the start of the season.

"The kids are playing much better basketball since September," she said.

"Every game we just go out and have fun," said PJ's Brianna Rowe. "It's what we do."

Rowe, who plays guard for the T-Birds and typically relies on her speed and ball handling ability, blocked two shots in the game, while adding a field goal in the third quarter.

"Hopefully, we can win against BCI," said Rowe, looking ahead to next Tuesday's game.

D10 Tuesday: Royals Squeak Past Celtics

The JF Ross Royals picked up a big win on Tuesday in D10 senior play, squeaking past the visiting Bishop Mac Celtics 48-46 at home.

The loss puts both teams with two in the "L column", but the Celtics still would have the tiebreak despite the split in the season series.

In yesterday's outing, Julia Robertson had a game-high 16 for JF Ross, while Kelly Dunk added 15 and Kayla Vande Kemp put in 8.  The Celtics received 11 from Tesha Kraszkiewicz, 10 from Andrea Priamo and 8 from Rebecca Keil.

In other games on Tuesday:

St. James 38, Orangeville 29

Erica Zen had a nice 20-point outing, while Brittany Gazzola added 9 and the Lions picked up a key win on the road.  Claire Fenton had 16 for ODSS.

The Crusaders did indeed get some revenge for their earlier loss to GCVI, as they handled them easily on the road.  Three Lourdes players were in double figures --- Hannah Pearsall (12), Chelsea Mathieu (10) and Cecilia Hudecki (10).  For GCVI, Hanna Chidwick had 9 and Jamie Young 8.
