Look for Rez to get it done at home today. St. Mary's (3-1) at Woodland (0-4) My Pick: SMHS by 24 If they don't overlook the Cavs, St. Mary's should pick up a road win here today.
Two CWOSSA teams were the class of the field at Queen's University annual tournament in Kingston over the weekend.
Oddly enough, though, it was the (then) unranked North Park Trojans handling the CWOSSA #2 Waterloo-Oxford Crusaders by a 42-27 count in the tournament final.
Bishop Macdonell's annual tournament in support of breast cancer awareness was a success for the Celtics both on and off the court as they took home the championship title over the weekend in Guelph.
The tournament was a 6-team, pool play event.

The CWOSSA #1 ranked St. John's Green Eagles got past the #3 Resurrection Phoenix, 44-39, in the final game of the one-day Resurrection Round-Robin tournament this past Friday.
Both teams have established themselves as CWOSSA contenders in their respective divisions (St. John's is an AAA team, whereas Resurrection is AAAA).
Centre Wellington (Fergus) and North Park (Brantford) were the other teams at the event.

Well, this was difficult. Sure, the top few teams have been easy to sort out over the opening weeks of the season, but the latter few spots......well, it's "interesting" to say the least. With many of the teams beating each other, it was certainly difficult to try to piece together this initial ranking. Hopefully, things will sort themselves out a bit (and make my job easier!) in the coming weeks.

It was a "day of defense" on Thursday afternoon as only one of the 12 teams managed to crack the 40 point mark --- and it wasn't by much as SJAM registered 42 in their 42-31 win over Galt. Here's a recap of the action: Preston 31, Cameron Hts. 30 The Panthers (4-0) moved Cameron Heights to 0-4, but it didn't come easily on Thursday. Both teams had tremendous individual efforts as Claire Gagne (PHS) and Katrina Stickel (CHCI) each had 20 points for their respective clubs. Grand River 39, Elmira 17 The Rens are still unbeaten after a road win over Elmira. Nancy Michael (14), Maya Day (12) and Jessica Zmika (10) were all in double figures for Grand River in this one. Cassie Martin, Kaitlyn Wilson and Mikayla Weber had 4 apiece for Elmira. SJAM 42, Galt 31 SJAM continued their strong early-season play with a victory over Galt on Thursday. Joanna Bamberger paced the way with 16, while Griffin Lack-Shane added 9. Emma Buck (11) and Beth Fleming (7) were tops for Galt. Jacob Hespeler 31, WCI 12 The Hawks opened up a 23-4 halftime edge and cruised home to victory over WCI on Thursday. Shianne Riggan had 13 and Kendra Dennis 8 in the win; Victoria Giguere again led the Viking offensive attack with 6 while Andrea Gradinaro had 4. WODSS 33, Huron Hts. 22 With Emily Glendinning back in the lineup, the Crusaders ended their mini losing-streak. She poured in a game-high 17 points to lead the Crusaders to victory in this one. It was "one for the record books" Thursday evening over at Jacob Hespeler in Cambridge for several reasons. Firstly, with the Hawks' 36-31 win over WCI, Jacob Hespeler put and end to WCI's 48-game WCSSAA league and playoff win streak. The Vikings, who have won 10 of the last 11 WCSSAA league titles as well, hadn't lost a league or playoff game since a last-second basket by KCI in the 2009 WCSSAA final gave the Raiders an unlikely title. For those keeping score at home, that's three straight perfect seasons (15 wins), plus the three wins to start the 2013 season. I'll go out on a limb with my next history lesson; I also believe that the Jacob Hespeler win marked the first time in school history that the squad has defeated WCI in league play.
(If someone out there can refute that claim, let me know!). Candice Wright poured in 20 points while PG Jasmine Ramcharan added 10. Ramcharan, a rookie junior grad, has been a difference maker early on in the season with several key offensive performances (including 29 in last weekend's tournament final win over Grand River). Kaylee Anagnostopoulos had 8 and Danielle Sauve 7 for the Vikes. Frances Campbell had 11 and Christiana Koebel 8 in the victory, while Cassidy Wettlaufer had a game-high 12 for the Trojans with Linna Liou adding 4. WODSS 54, Huron Hts. 20 My Pick: WODSS by 31 The Crusaders, like the Raiders, are also 4-0 after taking out Huron Heights on the road yesterday. Alisha Glendinning (15), Becca Payne (13) and Maddy Horst (12) were all in double-figures for the Crusaders, while Katrina Kostecki had 6 and Jenna Gangl 5 for Huron. Cameron Hts. 42, Preston 19 My Pick: CHCI by 27 Hunter Johns had a game-high 14 points, while Tonisha Lewis added 8 in Cameron's win over Preston on Thursday. Delaney Trottier netted 5 and Keristen May 4 for PHS. SJAM 40, Galt 32 My Pick: SJAM by 6 It was the Highlanders picking up their first win of the year by getting past the Ghosts. Taylor Trush knocked in 14 points, while Samantha Shantz was also in double figures with 12 for SJAM. Megan White had a game-high 17 for the Ghosts, while Sydney Schooten added 7. Grand River 42, Elmira 32 My Pick: GRCI by 9 Nyamuoch Teny pumped home 14 points while fellow grade ten rookie Tara DeBoer added 10 more in the win. Collegiate senior girls basketball coach Andrea Hawkins realizes it's
going to be difficult for her Trojans to get back to that tournament.
“I think it's going to be a good league this year,” Hawkins said of the Brant County circuit. “I really do.
“I think honestly St. John's is a step ahead of everybody. Then I think BCI, us and Assumption are going to battle for second.”
While St. John's is clearly the favourite early in the season – the
Green Eagles competed at the AAAA level last season but the school's
population dropped so St. John's is in AAA – lots can happen before now
and when the last basket has been scored in Brant.
Hawkins will be hoping for steady improvement from a team that has a ton of talent.
Last season the Trojans finished third in Brant County and then lost
to Assumption – which was also AAAA last season – in the semifinals.
Because North Park was the highest remaining AAA seed in Brant, it go
to go to the Central Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association
championships, which it hosted.
Playing on their home court, the Trojans won the championship and
qualified for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations
championship, where it went 1-3.
“We were happy to get there,” Hawkins said of the OFSAA berth.
“We
upset two teams in CWOSSA that we shouldn't have beat to get there. The
kids played very well.”
This season North Park returns five players from last year's team,
including two that played major roles a year ago in Abbey Sayles and
Abbey Johnston.
Rebecca Adkins, Taylor Greenwood and Jasneet Dhanoa are also back and
they'll be expected to contribute this season especially considering
the circumstances NPC currently finds itself in.
Hawkins took nine players for the team this year but she only has
seven at her disposal as an injured ACL and fractured finger have
sidelined two players.
Last week, in its first game of the season, a 41-40 loss to Brantford
Collegiate Institute, the Trojans found out just how hard the league is
going to be.
However, with a starting five of Sayles and Sarah Minutillo at guard,
Johnston and Adkins at forward and Gabrielle Marton at centre, the team
played put forth a great effort against the Mustangs.
“We played well,” said Hawkins. “We handled their press no problem
but they sat in a zone that drove us crazy. We missed a lot of easy
shots we can't afford to miss.
“(BCI is) strong. It's going to be a good game every time.”
BCI had pressed NPC in the past with great success but Hawkins feels
her players are starting to mature and understand the game much better.
With that in mind, Hawkins said the team must keep its opponents from the charity stripe and its own players off the bench.
“For me, it's going to be staying out of foul trouble,” she said of
what the team needs to work on the most. “If I can keep my best players
on the floor, we're going to win games.
“They're learning to play. Abbey (Johnston) and Sarah are both very
aggressive and they're both very quick. They like to pressure and go
after the ball but they're starting to learn to play with fouls which is
good because last year that was a big struggle.
“Abbey and Abbey and Sarah are three phenomenal players for me. Abbey
Johnston has matured so much this past year and Sarah Minutillo's
defence is fantastic.”
Hawkins, whose team rebounded from its first-game loss with a 54-22
win against Assumption on Tuesday, would love to see her team run the
floor but it's tough with just seven healthy.
“Our strength is we can run and we can press,” she said. “It's a
balance that somehow I have to figure out and they have to figure out
because we're the best when we press and run but we only have seven so
they don't get to run.
“I'm very cautious on how I use my timeouts. Lots of times in the
second half I'm using timeouts not necessarily for strategy but more for
rest.”
North Park, which is scheduled to host Paris on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., will be hosting CWOSSA AAA again this year.
YTD: 18-2 (.900) All of the following are scheduled for 3:30pm tip times, and there is one scheduling note as well --- due to the Southwood fire incident, and subsequent school closure for the week, it looks as though today's Bluevale @ Southwood game will be rescheduled.

Forest Hts. (2-1) at KCI (3-0) My Pick: KCI by 17 The Trojans, who had an easy schedule the first week, got (still unbeaten) WODSS and KCI this week. Raiders to win here.
WODSS (3-0) at Huron Hts. (1-2) My Pick: WODSS by 31 The Crusaders have won their three games thus far by an average margin of 29.6 PPG. Look for that trend to continue here today.
Cameron Hts. (2-1) at Preston (0-2) My Pick: CHCI by 27 The Gaels should continue their win streak at the expense of the Preston Panthers.
SJAM (0-3) at Galt (0-3) My Pick: SJAM by 6 One of these teams picks up their first win today; I think the SJAM Highlanders have the slight advantage so I'll go with them, even on the road.
Grand River (2-1) at Elmira (1-2) My Pick: GRCI by 9 The Lancers hung right with the KCI Raiders the other day, so I'm not projecting a blowout --- but I do like the Grand River Renegades to pick up the "W" here.
One game yesterday in D10 girls play, so we'll review that before moving on to today's picks.
As expected, Centennial got past Centre Wellington by a 31-11 final, with Emma Cain (17) and Emma Korol (11) providing the bulk of the offense. Madison Fennell had 5 for CW.
There was a bit more offense in the junior game, but a similar result, as Centennial pulled out a 36-23 victory there. Carter Godman had a game high 23 points for the Spartans, while Jodi Richards led the Falcons with 7.

Lourdes (2-1) at JF Ross (1-2) My Pick: OLOL by 5 Figure this will be a close one either way; coin flip goes to the Crusaders on the road.
St. James (3-0) at Bishop Mac (3-0) My Pick: BMAC by 4 First place on the line here, and it should be a pretty good one down in South Guelph. I'll go with the home Celtics in another squeaker.
Orangeville (0-3) at Centre Wellington (0-4) My Pick: CWDHS by 8 One team gets their first win here today; I'll take the Falcons provided they're rested up enough after their game last night.
Centennial (3-1) at Guelph CVI (1-2) My Pick: CCVI by 8 The Spartans have been doing it with defense lately and I think they'll be able to get past GCVI here today.
On the junior D8 side, the Resurrection Phoenix are certainly hoping that the old adage, "defense wins championships" rings true.
For the third consecutive game (which I believe is a D8 record), the Phoenix held their opposition under 10 total points scored in the game as they bested Kitchener St. Mary's by a 40-9 score.
Their previous two games were 54-5 (PRDG) and 56-9 (Rockway).
I say that I believe it's a D8 record as I can come up with several occurrences where a team held their opponents under 10 points for 2 consecutive games (St. David, in fact, did this last year), but can't think of a team with 3 straight.
Jama Bin-Edward and Patricia Enrique netted 8 points each in the win.
If you were thinking that Rez might be able to get 4 games in a row, that probably won't happen as next up for the Phoenix is a date with the St. David Celtics, one of the top three teams in the league.

Senior Resurrection 30, St. Mary's 26 My Pick: RCSS by 5 The Resurrection Phoenix survived a "grind it out" affair with their cross-town rivals, the St. Mary's Eagles, securing a 4-point victory in what many people anticipate might be the potential D8 finals match-up (we'll see what St. David and St. Benedict, in particular, have to say about that).
Sarah Schulz (10) and Celia McGlynn (10) were each in double figures for Rez, while Laura Kay and Brittany Gulic had 6 each for the Eagles.
St. David 54, Rockway 21 My Pick: SDCSS by 35 Scoring details weren't immediately made available; but the Celtics stayed atop the regular season standings at 4-0 with their second win of the year over Rockway.
St. Benedict 37, Woodland 28 My Pick: SBCSS by 13 Kayla Leusink had 15 and Dana Milani 14 as the St. Benedict Saints were able to get into the win column over the Woodland Cavaliers. Kirstin Hofstee had 12 and Emma Roorda 10 for Woodland.

"It" being the first regular-season matchup between the two preseason favourites in the D8 league, the St. Mary's Eagles and the Resurrection Phoenix.
Although there isn't very much difference between the two teams on paper, they approach games in a very different way. The Eagles, for instance, have a balanced attack (although Beth Zebib has been their scoring star in the early going) whereas the Phoenix are reliant on two key players --- Celia McGlynn & Sarah Schulz, for the bulk of their offensive production.
I'll take Resurrection by 5 at home.

A win here will help the Celtics move (at least temporarily) ahead of one of those clubs.
Don't give WCSSAA's "AAA" CWOSSA berths to the Waterloo-Oxford Crusaders and KCI Raiders just yet.
On Tuesday, the Elmira Lancers proved that they may have a say in the matter after hanging with the Raiders on the road before falling by a 38-33 final.
Christiana Koebel poured in 19 points for the Raiders to help their cause, while Olivia Nelles added 6. Nicole Cressman had 16 for Elmira; Karley Sider added 6 more.

Grand River 60, Galt 25 My Pick: GRCI by 24 The Rens used a balanced team effort to take care of Galt in their home gym on Thursday. Caroline Lorkovic (14) and Jamie Noonan (8) led the way for Grand River; Molly Bradford (7) and Courtney Davis (6) were the top Galt scorers.
Cameron Hts. 48, SJAM 18 My Pick: CHCI by 25 Hunter Johns (10) and Tye Page (10) were among the top Cameron scorers as they defeated SJAM Tuesday. Taylor Trush had 7 and Sam Shantz 6 for SJAM.
At the conclusion of play on Tuesday, Five teams in the WCSSAA junior circuit remain perfect with 3-0 records.
Sure, we expected teams like Grand River, KCI, and Bluevale to be there, but two "AAA" Cambridge schools are showing that they belong as well, with Jacob Hespeler and Preston boasting unblemished marks.
The Panthers are certainly the most eye opening of this quintet, as with three wins (including yesterday's "bye win" over Southwood), they have now surpassed their entire win total from a season ago (2).

YTD: 12-2 (.857) There don't appear to be too many competitive games on today's WCSSAA schedule, but it should help my picks record so I'm not complaining. Here's a look:
Southwood (1-1) at Preston (0-2) My Pick: SSS by 13 Preston has been pretty solid on the defensive end (including only giving up 35 points to WCI last week), but they haven't been able to score the ball (15.0 PPG through two games). Sabres should take a low-scoring affair here.
Elmira (1-1) at KCI (2-0) My Pick: KCI by 11 The Lancers are better than initially expected, but it won't be enough to get past KCI here on the road today.
Cameron Heights (1-1) at SJAM (0-2) My Pick: CHCI by 25 After getting past Jacob Hespeler, the Gaels have a pretty favourable schedule over the next few league dates. Look for them to get another win here today.
Forest Heights (2-0) at Waterloo-Oxford (2-0) My Pick: WODSS by 29 The Crusaders are already in mid-season form and should move to 3-0 today at home.
Huron Heights (0-1) at Bluevale (1-0) My Pick: BCI by 28 Two teams that had open dates last week will play their second games of the season today. Bluevale has too much scoring offense for Huron to handle here.
Galt (0-2) at Grand River (1-1) My Pick: GRCI by 24 The Renegades should move back above .500 if they don't take the Ghosts lightly.
WCI (2-0) at Eastwood (0-2) My Pick: WCI by 32 Only two years ago, these teams met in the WCSSAA championship final. Although Eastwood has made strides over the first several weeks of the season, the Vikes should be too much in this one.
