Bishop Mac Earns #1 Seed at OFSAA "AA"

Make that two #1 seeds for CWOSSA teams entering this week's OFSAA championships.

The Bishop Mac Celtics from Guelph, last year's "AA" OFSAA champions, have been seeded first overall at this year's championship in Cornwall.

Perhaps they will be surprised to see that the General Amherst High School Lady Gens will not be at this year's OFSAA tournament. General Amherst, who won four consecutive OFSAA titles before Bishop Mac beat them in the final last year, have now moved up to the "AAA" level. Taking their place from their region is Strathroy's Holy Cross, who have earned the #2 seed.

Rounding out the top five are: St. Francis (St. Catharines) at #3, Sault Ste. Marie's St. Basil (#4), and #5 seed Kingston LaSalle.

Former WCI Star Kotsopoulos Having Successful Start to Senior Year

Former WCI Vikings' Girls Star May Kotsopoulos is off to another great start for the University of Vermont Catamounts.

The 5'10" senior guard is averaging 23.0 PPG, 2.0 assists and 1.7 steals for Vermont, who currently sport a 3-0 record. In addition, she is shooting 50.0% from the floor and 40.0% from behind the arc.

Around the Horn - Sunday, November 22nd

Green Eagles Victorious in "AAAA" CWOSSA
The St. John's Green Eagles, who have to be considered a medal favourite at the "AAAA" OFSAA championships this coming week, defeated the Waterloo CI Vikings by a 75-47 count yesterday evening in Waterloo.

Kayla Santilli led St. John's with 21, while Shelby Kurt was the high scorer for WCI with 16.

The Vikings will also qualify for the "AAAA" OFSAA Championships, which take place in Hamilton.

On the junior side of the ball, the Brantford Assumption Lions were able to withstand St. Mary's guard Kaitlin Schenck's 35-point outburst to defeat the Eagles 52-47 and claim the AAAA crown.

Emily Gill and Abby Herron had 16 each for the Lions.

Schenck, meanwhile, had a CWOSSA performance for the ages. She had 26 in the semifinals (48-36 win over Guelph JF Ross), 36 in the first round against Centennial (64-34 win) and another 30 points against WCI in the first round (52-50 OT win). That's 31.8 PPG!

St. Mary's Senior Coach Jeff Roth must be excited to see that sort of offensive potential come up to the senior ranks next year --- the highest point total registered by any St. Mary's senior girl this year was Naomi Lance's 13 against Centennial in CWOSSA.

Raiders take "AAA" Senior Title
The KCI Raiders and North Park Trojans will represent CWOSSA at the "AAA" OFSAA level.

The Raiders were victorious by a 66-59 count in last night's final. Rachael Urosevic had 28 to lead KCI.

The junior Trojans defeated the St. James Lions of Guelph 61-46 in the junior final.

Forest Heights Victorious in Sarnia
The annual Sarnia "Black and Blue" tournament, co-hosted by Sarnia St. Patrick's and Sarnia St. Christopher's, took place this past weekend.

Local teams included Forest Heights, Resurrection, and Sir John A. Macdonald.

The Trojans ended up winning the tournament championship, with a victory over Sarnia Northern in the championship game. They earlier defeated SJAM in the championship semifinals --- although SJAM was missing 6 or 7 players due to their junior football championship tilt.

As for last year's CWOSSA champs, the Resurrection Phoenix already have as many losses as they did all of last season. Resurrection went 1-1 in pool play and ended up losing in the consolation final to St. Christopher's.

Former GRCI Star Qahwash Takes on Kansas

Former Grand River ('06) star Imad Qahwash and his University of Central Arkansas Bears travelled to Lawrence, Kansas, to battle the Kansas Jayhawks (#1 team in the NCAA) yesterday evening.

The Jayhawks were victorious, 94-44. Qahwash had an interesting encounter in the 2nd half where he inadvertently stepped on Sherron Collins' ankle, causing him to temporarily leave the game. For those who don't know, Collins is the Jayhawks starting point guard and a probable first round NBA draft pick. For video footage from ESPN and recap click here.

Qahwash, who has been the Bears starting point guard in all three games this year, finished with 5 points (1-5 FG, 3-4 FT), 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal in 27 minutes of action.

It was definitely one of the great experiences of Qahwash's career. "After they won the tip it felt like I was in the Final Four," he said. "I looked up at Sharron Collins with the ball in his hands and I knew it was on and it was for real --- not many kids get the chance to play against the number one team but I am grateful for (the opportunity)."

The Bears will host Western Illinois at home on Saturday before taking on another talented NCAA opponent, travelling to the University of Memphis to battle the Tigers next week --- a game that will be played at the FedEx forum, an arena also used by the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies.

On a personal note, nice to see a lot of former CWOSSA players having key roles with their NCAA teams this year and contributing on the court. I'll have periodic updates of who is where and how teams are doing throughout the season......

St. James is a team to watch. They've beaten Bishop Mac in the playoffs (perhaps one of the top 2 junior teams in CWOSSA), and won the final over JF Ross. They're peaking at the right time, and have hit 16 threes in their last 2 games. Impressive stuff at the junior level.

Typo of the Day

Mark Bryson's K-W Record article on the KCI victory says that KCI will be taking on "Toronto's West Hill Collegiate" in the first round of the CWOSSA championship.

Toronto's West Hill does come up first on a google search, but the team actually participating at CWOSSA will be West Hill Secondary School of Owen Sound. West Hill is the largest school in the Bluewater board, with approximately 1200 students.

Around The Horn - Friday, November 20th

District 8 Sweeps "A" CWOSSA

The D8 league came away with both "A" CWOSSA titles yesterday afternoon.

In the junior league, the PRDG Chevaliers from Cambridge took the crown with a 31-22 victory over Delhi DHS. PRDG earlier defeated Waterford by a 46-41 count in the semifinals.

On the senior girls side, the Rockway Flames won yet another title with relative ease. The Flames doused Delhi 64-26 in their semifinal game, and then took down Walkerton in the final, 46-20.

The Flames now advance to the Senior Girls "A" OFSAA Championships, which take place next week in Cornwall.

St. Mary's Senior Boys Beat Bluevale, Junior Huskies beat Eagles

The St. Mary's Eagles defeated Bluevale CI in an OT thriller yesterday evening. Don't have any more details at this time, but the few exhibition games that have been played between "top tier" teams thus far have all been close. Yes, it's early, and some teams are still missing guys with fall sports going on.....but hoepfully that's a sign of parity and will lead to an exciting race for the CWOSSA crown and the OFSAA berths.

In junior action, Huron Heights dumped St. Mary's --- is this a sign that Huron is up this year or that Mary's is down? Time will tell.

Forest Heights Senior Boys off to Hamilton

The Senior FHCI Trojans will be making a visit to Hamilton this weekend to participate in the Parkside Senior Boys Tournament.

The 8 team tournament is as follows:

11:30am - Forest Hts vs Holy Trinity (Oakville)

1pm - Cathedral vs Westdale
2:30pm - St. Christopher's (Sarnia) vs Nelson

....needless to say, a tough draw for the Trojans. The Titans of Holy Trinity are one of the better teams in the Golden Horseshoe, so it will be a tough one to win. That said, it's nice to see them challenging themselves against high-calibre competition in an early season tourney after not being selected for the Heinbuch.

D10, D8 Schedules Start Next Week

The D10 league schedule is set for tip-off next week, with a key game almost right off the bat on Wednesday, November 25th. The Centennial Spartans will travel down the Hanlon to battle the Bishop Macdonell Celtics in a battle of two teams that many predict will battle for the league crown.

The D8 schedule has 3 games on Wednesday the 25th as well --- Resurrection @ Rockway, St. Mary's @ St. David (in a key early season Senior match-up), and a Cambridge clash between St. Bendict and Monsignor Doyle.

SJAM Tops Rez in Sr. Exhibition Play

On Tuesday, SJAM battled Resurrection in a Senior Exhibition Basketball game. Both teams were without key contributors due to football and volleyball action (Jake Robinet - SJAM & Tyler Schneider - RCSS to name a couple).

SJAM took the game, 45-40. It was a 14-13 (ew) game at halftime.

Rez will battle Cameron Heights on Monday afternoon in another exhibition tilt.

Three Junior Teams Heading to Sarnia

Three top local junior teams --- Forest Heights, SJAM, and Resurrection will all be heading to Sarnia this weekend for the annual St. Christopher's "Black and Blue" tournament.

The Phoenix defeated FHCI in last year's final, while SJAM was a semifinalist.

Of note --- SJAM, who many project as a top team in AAAA CWOSSA, will be shorthanded as their junior football team (featuring Theshawn Berry et al) will be competing in the title game Saturday afternoon.

AA Girls CWOSSA

Was hosted yesterday by Our Lady of Lourdes in Guelph. Although I don't have results as of yet, it's safe to say that Bishop Mac likely came away with both junior & senior titles in the 4 team, single elimination draw.

The Celtics, last year's AA OFSAA Gold Medalists, destroyed JF Ross in the D10 Senior final by a 61-35 count. Their junior squad finished first during the D10 regular season before being upset by a St. James squad that nailed 9 threes on them en route to victory.

Waterloo CI Vikings (WCSSAA #1)



The Vikings will have little time to reflect on their heartbreaking loss to KCI in the WCSSAA finals, as the CWOSSA "AAAA" tournament kicks off on Friday.

The Vikes have any number of players that can go off for double figures, including Shelby Kurt, Carly Tithecott, and Lindsay Taylor. Bria Dietrich brings up the defensive intensity on that side of the ball for the Vikes.

I look for WCI to secure yet another OFSAA "AAAA" spot with a trip to the finals.

Centennial CVI Spartans (D10 #2)



The Spartans, who did not participate at the CWOSSA "AAAA" championships last season, will be making a return trip to the big dance.

Centennial finished 3rd overall in the D10 league (10-4), thanks in part to strong play from Laura Brown, who was the Spartans' leading scorer in every regular season game this season but one --- tallying a 16.0 PPG average. Grade 10 rookie Charlotte Clarke, has impressed playing up at the senior level and provides some added front court depth. Chloe Korol is also a key contributor.

St. Mary's HS Eagles (D8 #1)


Like the Vikings, the Eagles are coming away from a heartbreaking final loss, theirs coming to St. David in the D8 championship game (37-35).

Like last year where they went winless, the Eagles will face an uphill battle in pool play. Guard Naomi Lance and Amanda Proulx will have to be at the top of their game for the Eagles to advance out of pool play.

Pool B

JF Ross Royals (D10 #1)



The Ross Royals, runners up to Bishop Mac in the D10 league might actually be the heavy underdogs in the "B" pool despite their successful season to date.

Grade 12 forward Gemma Bullard, who also actually played overseas for England's U-18 team this summer (scoring 15 points in a game against Finland), will have to have a better performance than in the D10 finals, where Bishop Mac keyed on her and held her to 3 points.

Stephanie Monroe, Vanessa Martini, and Mackenzie Merkeley will all be counted on for solid contributions this weekend.

St. John's College Eagles (D5 #1)



The Eagles, who played at the "AAA" level last season, have made the jump up to Quad-A with ease. It goes without saying that they are the favourites entering this tournament, after some impressive wins over some Ontario powerhouses (including WCI) ---- they have a current record of 37-0 on the season.

Kelly Van Leeuwen and Andrea Polischuk lead a balanced attack for the Green and White.

SJAM Highlanders (WCSSAA #2)



The Highlanders might be able to make some noise in this tournament, and I'll predict them to claim the 2nd spot in "B" pool over the Ross Royals.

Jordan Tomas is a prolific scorer, while Krista Van Slingerland is a consistent second option for the Highlanders. Rochelle Thiel adds depth for SJAM.

KCI squeaks by WCI to win Senior Title

As good as the Senior Girls' Basketball team at KCI has been this year, you had to figure they were up against it when they went to battle the WCI Vikings down at Preston High School on Wednesday night.

The Raiders, however, got the monkey off their backs and escaped with a two-point victory, ending the Vikes' long playoff and regular season (WCSSAA) win streak.

The junior final saw WCI defeat Southwood.

2009 AAAA CWOSSA - Junior Girls' Preview

Will be doing a few of these over the next couple of days -- AAA & AAAA, junior & senior.

CWOSSA "AAAA" Girls Preview

If some of these teams and players seem familiar, they should be. Four of six teams competing in the Junior "AAAA" Championship were here last year. Here's a quick rundown of the teams as well as my selections.

Junior - Pool "A"

St. Mary's Eagles (Kitchener - D8 #1)

The Eagles enter this tournament as the prohibitive favourite. They return the majority of their scoring offense from last year's team that advanced to the CWOSSA semfinals.

Guard Kaitlyn Schenck is the catalyst for the Eagles, and is a consistent double digit scorer who can fill the net in a variety of ways. Laura Boterman provides added depth in the backcourt.

Waterloo CI Vikings (Waterloo - WCSSAA #1)

Despite having 2 top grade 10s (Lindsay Lessard & Lindsay Taylor) play up in senior, the Vikes are back in the CWOSSA playdowns.

This year's team got off to a rocky start, including a loss to Galt (a non-playoff WCSSAA team). However, the Vikes have hit their stride and are the favourite in tomorrow's WCSSAA final against Southwood. They are led by Erin Helsby, Alex Klein, and Julia Pavlik.


Centennial CVI Spartans (Guelph - D10 #2)



The young Spartans only posted a 5-9 record en route to a 5th place finish during D10 league play this season, however, they get the CWOSSA nod as the three teams that they finished ahead of were all "AAAA" schools.

It will likely be a quick "two and out" for CCVI, but hopefully they can build on things with a young roster for next year. That said, you never know what can happen in a "one game" situation.

Lizzy Woods and Kendra Achonwa are the top performers to keep an eye on for the Spartans.


Junior - Pool "B"

John F. Ross Royals (Guelph - D10 #1)



The Royals gained experience last year and are hoping to improve on their CWOSSA experience from a year ago, where they lost both pool-play games.

JF Ross has a bevy of talented guards, led by veterans Silvie Cafarella and Carolyn Holmes, and grade nine Sydney Resch, Ross' MVP in their D10 championship game loss to St. James. Rachel Pollock provides some front-court scoring.

The Royals have been inconsistent at times, and will have to be at their best in order to advance out of a very tough "B" pool.

Bluevale CI Knights (WCSSAA #2)

The Knights, a semifinalist from a year ago, are back and hoping to improve on that finish.

They enter as the 2nd WCSSAA seed, but have proven they can hang with the top teams (they were the only team to defeat JHSS during regular season play).

With last year's dynamite player, Elissa Dent, having moved up to senior, several players have stepped in to fill the void. They include Natalie Bishop, Amy Shinkar, and Hannah Fishbein.

The Knights are a slight underdog in their pool, but they will be playing on familiar WCSSAA courts. Perhaps that will propel them into the semifinals....


Assumption CS Lions (D5 #1)



The Lions, coming off a 51-37 defeat in game #2 of the D5 final are hoping to find themselves on the right side of at least one game in pool play. The Lions have a young roster that should be a force next year ---- but they can definitely compete this year, so don't be surprised to see them in the semifinals, or even sneaking into the final.

Rebekah Couperus (who averaged double digits against NPC in the 2 game final) is their top scorer. Emily Gill and Abby Heron have solid scoring ability as well.
