D8 Wednesday: Flames Take Control of "A" CWOSSA Berth

A trio of games on Wednesday in the D8 senior league (and one junior game) so here are the results:

No surprise here as the Celts get the win.  Jake Klimt (9) and Dan Hummel (8) led the way for St. David, while Roberto Atwell had 7 and Tyler Saris 6 for MDCSS.

The high-octane Eagles again put up big numbers on Wednesday afternoon; they were led by Zak Hannah scoring-wise with 12 points.  Santo Dak was the lone Saint in double-figures with 10.

Rockway 63, PRDG 39
My Pick:  RMC
With the win, the Flames sweep the season series from PRDG and (likely) will get the CWOSSA "A" berth from District 8.  Michael Hewson had 10 for Rockway, while David Nolet continued his strong play for PRDG with a 20-point effort.

Have to take a minute to give some props to my brother's website creation, www.cheaptexts.ca.  This site is particuarly useful for University of Waterloo or Wilfrid Laurier students, but other university/college students may find it useful as well.

It's pretty simple --- enter your course information and the books required for this coming term (i.e. Winter 2011) will be displayed on screen along with the best prices among several sellers (for instance -- Amazon, Abebooks, UW Used Books, Laurier & UW Bookstores, Bookro, etc.).  Needless to say, this allows the prospective buyer to quickly compare prices across a variety of marketplaces.

If you don't wish to search by course code, searches can be done by title or ISBN as well.

Junior: Draw Change - Purple & Gold Tournament

A minor draw change to the Resurrection/Huron Heights "Purple and Gold" 3rd annual tournament this weekend:

The Grand River Renegades (albeit with a depleted lineup I hear) and Brantford St. John's College Eagles will be taking the place of the Eastwood Rebels and Collingwood Fighting Owls, who have other commitments this weekend.

This does not affect the lower (Huron Heights) portion of the draw but the Resurrection half of the draw is now as follows:

The Flames were victorious last time around; PRDG will need a victory here to help their playoff chances (and possible "A" CWOSSA berth aspirations).  That said, I think the Flames have too much offense for PRDG here.

The Celtics will keep a firm grasp on 3rd place in the D8 standings with another victory today.

NSSAA: Trinity Knocks Delhi from Undefeated Ranks

A big matchup yesterday in the NSSAA featured the Delhi Raiders (3-0 entering play) and the Holy Trinity Titans (2-1 entering the contest).

Though rivals in league play, these clubs each feature about 5 players who are teammates in the offseason (on the Norfolk Nets OBA team), which always adds a bit of fuel to the fire.  Tuesday's game was another hotly contested effort, but it was the Titans who were able to hold off the Raiders and come away with a 46-39 victory at home.  Though Holy Trinity led throughout the game, Delhi did get within 4 points in the final frame but could not muster a further push.

Josh Johnson had 4 three-pointers and 20 poins in total for Holy Trinity, while teammate Kevin McDonald had 18 and Andrew Mattan added 6 on two deep three-pointers. 
Delhi's scoring details weren't immediately available but 6'6" post Justin Lichach was dominant in the paint while Donte Richardson (a transfer from New Jersey) was able to slice his way to the basket for a strong scoring effort himself. 

Some other CWOSSA clubs will get a close look at the Titans in the coming weeks --- they are playing in the Brantford CI tournament this weekend, and then will head to Waterloo next Friday for a mini-tournament (with St. David and Huron Heights).

BCSSAA: North Park Takes Out St. John's in OT

The North Park Trojans remained undefeated in BCSSAA senior boys play after a thrilling 48-42 overtime victory over the St. John's Eagles on Tuesday.

D4 Tuesday: Craig's 35 Pace Westside Past Norwell

Westside's Adam Craig scored a D4 season-high 35 points as the Westside Thunder thrashed the Norwell Redmen 57-32 in D4 play on Tuesday afternoon.

Josh Milican added 11 for WSS, while Norwell received 19 combined from the Pronks -- Andrew (11) and Tyler (8).

In the other senior game on Tuesday, Wellington Heights defeated Woodland Christian 46-40.  Joe Batte (24) and Isti Kery (12) were tops for Wellington Heights, while Woodland received 12 from David Smith and 10 from Jessie Hoekstra.

In junior action, Norwell remained undefeated with a 47-35 victory over Westside.  Jeremiah Wiedemann (17) and Eric MacDonald (14) led the way for NDSS while Sheldon Coates paced Westside with 9.

I went with the Spartans, who had defeated the Falcons by around 20 points (on the road to boot) in their previous matchup.  However, it was the Falcons who earned the victory on Tuesday in Guelph, thanks in part to 17 from Gavin MacNamara and 13 from Reid Giondi.  Andrew Ellis had 17 for Centennial, while Erik Sterne added 15.

WCSSAA Tuesday: Trojans Hold off Ghosts in OT

In one (rescheduled) WCSSAA senior game on Tuesday afternoon, the Forest Heights Trojans outlasted the Galt CI Ghosts in overtime by a 65-60 final.

Needless to say, it's a slightly surprising result given that the Trojans entered the game with a perfect 5-0 record (now 6-0), while the Ghosts were 2-3 (now 2-4).

Javon Masters (20) and Srdjan Stanivuk (17) led the way for FHCI, while Galt received 16 from Gabe Vidal and 10 from Jack Simmons.

Update: SBCSS Tournament

As an update to my previous post on the tournament, I should note that I missed one of the CWOSSA teams participating in this year's tournament.

Kitchener Huron Heights will be making an appearance in the tournament this year; I had assumed Huron Heights from Newmarket was the "Huron Heights" participating since they have participated in previous SBCSS tournaments. 

This means that an even 50% (16 of the 32) participating teams are from within the CWOSSA region.

Huron Heights will play Resurrection CSS in the first round on Friday at 9:30am (Jacob Hespeler).

Senior Boys: Bluevale #11 Seed at Silver Fox (Jan 14/15)

The Bluevale Collegiate Knights have been given the #11 seed at the upcoming Silver Fox invitational tournament on January 14th and 15th in Hamilton.

The Knights will battle #6 St. Thomas More of Hamilton in their first round game, at 10:30am next Friday (Jan. 14th) at Glendale HS in Hamilton.

Should the Knights win that game, they would advance to a quarterfinal game against #3 Henry Carr or #19 Mississauga Ascension / #14 Stoney Creek Cardinal Newman. 

If the Knights fall in their opener, they would do battle with the loser of #15 Burlington Notre Dame and #18 Hamilton Westmount on the consolation side of the bracket.

The #1 seed is Anderson CVI of Whitby and the field is ranked as follows:

23rd Annual St. Benedict CSS Tournament

The 23rd annual St. Benedict CSS Tournament (32 teams!) is set to go down this weekend in Cambridge.

Of course, I'll be doing up a preview of the action and some key players to watch in due time this week, but here's some information:
