Junior WCSSAA: Southwood's White Scores 45

The KCI Raiders and Southwood Sabres showcased their offensive abilities in a game on Tuesday afternoon, with the Raiders coming away with a 65-49 victory.

The game was notable for a couple of reasons ---- firstly, it was the highest scoring combined point total of any WCSSAA junior game this season (114), and the only game where both teams have combined for more than 100 points.

More importantly, despite the loss, Southwood's grade 9 scoring phenom Taylor White put on a scoring clinic on Tuesday night, accounting for 45 of her squad's 49 points. 

This marked the first time since I've been keeping this blog that a junior or senior girl in CWOSSA has cracked the 40 point barrier.  Natalie Achnowa (ex-CCVI, now at Notre Dame) did have 41 against JF Ross back in a 2006 junior girls playoff game, which is the highest scoring effort that I can recall in recent memory.

As for White?  Her play has been crucial to Southwood getting into the playoffs.  She's scored 65% or more of Southwood's points in 5 games.  Her top efforts have included (Southwood points in brackets):

She's really come on down the stretch in terms of her scoring, and ended up leading the WCSSAA league at slightly over 20 PPG.

Simcoe Reformer: Sabres Girls Beat Bears

The Simcoe Sabres seniors finished undefeated in the NSSAA regular season as they beat Valley Heights 29-12.

The Sabres were led in scoring by Jordan Vanderhaeghen with nine and Alyssa Becque, who added eight. The Voyageur-Bears were paced by Tessa Clark with five points.

The Sabres were also victorious in the junior match, winning by a final score of 31-12. Simcoe's Hailey Taylor had 14 points to lead all scorers.

The Holy Trinity Titans junior girls scored a win in their final NSSAA basketball game of the regular season, 42-14 over Waterford. Holy Trinity, led by Katelyn Heyenz with 14 points, got its sixth win of the season. The Titans finish the year with a mark of 6-2, good enough for second in the league standings.

In the senior contest, the Wolves got their first victory of the season, defeating the playoff-bound Titans. Exact score was not available at press time.

Brantford Expositor: Late Free Throws Secure Win For Mustangs

The Brantford Collegiate Institute Mustangs are on their way to the Brant County senior girls basketball semifinal after beating the Pauline Johnson Collegiate Thunderbirds 30-25 in the quarterfinals Tuesday night.

The Mustangs will play the Green Eagles on Thursday at St. John's. In the other senior semifinal Thursday, the Assumption College Lions will meet the Trojans at North Park Collegiate. Both games start at 7 p.m.

On Tuesday, the T-Birds jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter and did a better job than the Mustangs of holding onto the ball. But two timely three-point field goals from BCI's Megan Melling closed the gap and seemed to settle down the Mustangs.

"We were really, really nervous," said BCI coach Ron Jamula. "Especially our kids who don't have a lot of basketball experience."

"Those two threes early... that really had us calm down a bit."

Turnovers were an issue for both teams in a game that went back and forth and came down to the last minute.

Down by three, the T-Birds had plenty of opportunities to tie the game late in the fourth, but failed to connect from behind the arc.

BCI was holding onto a 28-25 point lead with 39 seconds left when Cara Humenik was fouled to stop the clock. Humenik stepped up to the line and went one for two, extending BCI's lead to four.

After PJ missed a field goal, the T-Birds were forced to foul Melling with 12 seconds left on the clock. Melling again hit one of two from the line, securing the game for BCI.

Melling led the Mustangs in scoring with 12 points, while Chelsea Biggs led the T-Birds with 13.

"It was stressful but it was a lot of fun," said Humenik.

"It was a really close game. It was pretty much neck and neck the whole time. We'd pull ahead and then they'd pull ahead."

"When (those free throws) went in it was like a weight being lifted off your chest," she said.

BCI and PJ, being the fourth and fifth-seeded teams respectively, knew going into the game it would be competitive.

"We're two really evenly matched teams and every game was progressively closer," said PJ coach Neal Stamer. "They outplayed us tonight and that's a credit to their players and their coaches."

"Sometimes the ball doesn't want to go in the hole," Stamer added.

In the junior girls semifinal, BCI will host North Park and St. John's will host Assumption. Both games start at 5: 30 p.m. Thursday.

WCSSAA Junior Girls: Crusaders Wrap Up First in Convincing Fashion

The Waterloo-Oxford Crusaders completed one of the more impressive runs through the WCSSAA junior schedule in recent memory as they wrapped up a perfect 12-0 record on Tuesday.

With today's 38-16 win over WCI, W-O never allowed an opponent to reach 30 points, and they won every game by 16 or more points (Bluevale, 45-29 was their closest on both counts).

Boys' Season Arrives / Mark's CWOSSA Top Teams & Recruits

The start of November here in the CWOSSA region can only mean one thing --- the "official" start date of boys basketball tryouts.

Of course, we're nowhere done with the fall season as volleyball and football playoffs are about to start up, while still others are involved in cross country's OFSAA this weekend.

Nonetheless, it's never too early to start looking ahead.  Here's a quick "mini preview" looking at the top 5 Senior Boys teams (in my opinion) around CWOSSA entering the 2011-12 season: 

Mark's Preseason Top 5 Sr. Boys Teams

#1  JF Ross CVI – Guelph

Advantage:  Experience --- the Royals have “been there before”, having won the past few D10 titles and also having qualified for OFSAA the past two seasons. 

Disadvantage:  Not having the edge of being “under the radar” anymore; everyone will be expecting them as one of CWOSSA’s OFSAA representatives this year.

Key Players:  Shamlo Saeed (5'10" PG), Evan Karl (6'4" F), Mike Friesen (6'3" SG)

#2 Resurrection CSS – Kitchener

Advantage:  Size (3 forward positions 6’4” through 6’7”) and Bench Depth (can go 10 deep with limited dropoff).

Disadvantage:  Having to battle (again) with St. Mary’s just for the right to go to CWOSSA; the Eagles will be itching for revenge after dropping last year’s OT heartbreaker.  

Key Players:  Mike Pereira (6'4" F), Tyler Schneider (6'2" PG/SG), Cory Kenning (6'7" PF)

#3 St. Mary’s HS – Kitchener

Advantage:  Good guard play and depth at the 1 and 2 --- especially with solid junior crew moving up.

Disadvantage:  Will be a bit undersized (especially compared to some senior teams out there) unless they decide to bring Mike Blumel up from junior.

Key Players:  Alex Thompson (6'1" G), Isaac Lance (6'1" G), Adam Voll (6'6" F)

#4 Forest Heights CI – Kitchener

Advantage:  Guard play.  Arguably the best backcourt in CWOSSA with Juwan Miller and Javon Masters, who will keep them competitive with anyone.  Added in more backcourt depth via Adrian Russell (transfer/Resurrection CSS).

Disadvantage:  Lack of size and playoff experience.  Most of the current senior crew (with the exception of last year’s CWOSSA junior championship players moving up) haven’t played at a CWOSSA championship.

Key Players:  Javon Masters (5'11" G), Juwan Miller (5'10" G).

#5 Waterloo CI – Waterloo

Advantage:  Size --- could potentially start three players that are 6’6”+ (Dani Elgadi, Jacob Ranton, Malcolm Piazza).

Disadvantage:  Lack of depth at the guard positions.

Key Players:  Jacob Ranton (6'7" F), Malcolm Piazza (6'6" F), Dani Elgadi (6'6" F).

In yesterday's D10 senior contest, the JF Ross Royals moved into double-digit wins (10-2) with a 46-37 win over Lourdes.  Silvie Cafarella (11) and Julia Robertson (9) paced the Royals, who overcame a strong 16-point outing from Victoria Brombal of the Crusaders.  Hannah Pearsall also had 6 for OLOL.

D8: Monday Results Help Sort out Playoff Picture

Junior

In yesterday's D8 junior basketball action, the Resurrection Phoenix continued their unbeaten ways with a 58-20 victory over Monsignor Doyle.  Andrea Phillippi (10) and Kelsey Caza (8) paced Rez, while Yasmeen Smith had 7 for the 'Stangs.

The other game saw St. David finish with a 7-3 record after beating St. Benedict 41-30.  Heather Sandall had a nice effort with 18, while Bobbi-Sue Hentges added 11.  Kayla Leusink (10) and Amber Baetson (8) were the leading scorers for SBCSS.

Here are the current junior standings:

With regards to the playoff picture, Rez has clinched first overall and will likely play #4 St. Benedict.  The Saints will clinch a playoff berth should they defeat either Monsignor Doyle (they only won the first game 34-33) or Resurrection.

St. Mary's will likely take 2nd place, leapfrogging St. David with one remaining game against winless Rockway.  Both teams will finish at 7-3, with St. Mary's holding the +/- tiebreaker edge.

So, we should have:

(1) Resurrection vs. (4) MDCSS/SBCSS

(2) St. Mary's vs. (3) St. David

Senior

The Resurrection Phoenix moved to 6-2 with a 62-27 win over MDCSS.  Jenna Schultz (12), Danielle Duncan (4), and Tori Duncan (4) led the way in the Phoenix victory, while Jade Loehle (8) and Leah Flanagan (6) were the top MDCSS scorers.

In the other game, St. Benedict blasted St. David in SDCSS' regular season finale by a 42-9 mark.  Dana Milani (16) and Hilary Ferguson (7) led the Saints, while Jenny Woods had 4 for the Celts.

That brings us to the following senior standings:

We "should" see SBCSS defeat MDCSS in their last game (St. Benedict won the first matchup 62-12), which will set up one semifinal between St. Mary's and Monsignor Doyle.

The other semifinal will (therefore) likely see Rez play St. Benedict.  Ironically, these teams will play on Monday for the right to host that game (SBCSS must win by 11+), and then turn around on Wednesday to play in that semifinal.
