AA OFSAA: Falcons Can't Hold On Against #7 Timmins

The #13 OSCVI Falcons gave it a great shot, but came up on the short end of a 72-60 decision to #7 Timmins CVS at the OFSAA "AA" championships today in Windsor.

The Falcons made some terrific halftime adjustments and turned a 32-24 halftime deficit into a 46-40 lead after three quarters. However, Timmins poured in 32 points in the final frame while holding OSCVI to just 14.

Ross will need to get this down to single digits by the fourth quarter to have a shot. PJP has, however, really picked up the defensive intensity so we'll see if they keep it up or mentally "relax" now that they've secured a 15 point lead.

The Knights came out a bit "scared" in this one, falling behind 19-9 after a quarter. They got rid of some jitters in the second quarter, keeping things even and trailing 32-21 at half.

In the third quarter, they got within 8 before starting centre Andrew Beney fouled out. Down the stretch, the Knights rested Stefan Cvrkalj (who had a game high 24 points) and the Titans extended to a 25 point victory with a 20-11 final quarter.

Steven Squires was the high scorer for MT with 13.

Royals Drop First at AAAA OFSAA

In today's first-round AAAA matchup at Durham College in Oshawa, the #5 Vaughan Voyageurs used a dominant second quarter to pull away from the #17 Guelph JF Ross Royals en route to a 74-42 victory.

The Royals, thanks in part to the play of forward Ryan Cook, hung around in the early going. In fact, Ross held a brief lead before Vaughan went on a quick run to close the first frame (with a 17-12 lead).

The second quarter saw Vaughan's pressure begin to wear down Ross. A few turnovers coupled with Vaughan's slashing drives to the hoop gave them a sizeable 38-17 edge at the break.

The Royals fared better offensively in the second half, but could not get any closer than 25 points. When all was said and done, Vaughan ended up with a 74-42 win.

Cook was Ross' player of the game with 19 points. Dinjiyi Walker led all scorers with 20 for Vaughan.

The Royals don't have a lot of time to dwell on the loss --- they're back on the court at 8:30pm tonight against #15 Pope John Paul II of Scarborough, who dropped a 73-58 decision to #4 Eastern Commerce. PJP II was up 33-30 at the break, but a strong second half from EC propelled them to the victory.

In the other 1:00pm game, #6 Toronto Oakwood had no problems with #16 St. Matthew's of Orleans (Ottawa), winning 79-48.

AAA OFSAA: (7) North Park 46, (13) Midland St.Theresa's 39

The North Park Trojans had this game by the horns. Then, they almost gave it away.

Regardless, the Trojans got rid of some OFSAA nerves and held off the St. Theresa's Thunder of Midland 46-39 in day one action at AAA OFSAA in Kingston.

North Park flipped a 27-20 deficit into a 40-33 lead with about 2:15 left in the contest. The Trojans actually had possession, but a 5 second count on an inbounds. The Thunder turned that into an "and-one" and trailed 40-36.

With under 1:00 to go, a jump ball gave the ball back to St. Theresa's on the alternating possession. A great drive by Thomas Johnston for another "and one" made it 40-39.

Then, the experience of North Park shone through. The Trojans hit 2 free throws (42-39), forced a steal with under 20 seconds left and hit 4 more free throws to clinch the victory.

Things, however, don't get easier for North Park --- they get a lot tougher in a hurry. #10 Kingston Frontenac, behind a hometown crowd, upset #4 Jarvis of Toronto 39-36. Therefore, North Park will play Jarvis in a second round game tomorrow at Queen's University (noon).

For North Park, Cale McDonald and Dave Eves had 13 each. Eves fouled out of the contest late (due in part to a technical foul he was assessed after making a basket with about 5:00 left in the final frame). Mark Dickens also hit double figures with 11 points, while other Trojan scorers included Brandon Webster (4), Marcus Hamilton (3) and Mike Dulmage (2).

Thomas Johnston led the Thunder with 12 points.

OFSAA AAAA: JF Ross vs. Vaughan

Early on, Ross is hanging with Vaughan --- down 15-12. They are, however, having all kinds of problems with Vaughan's full court pressure.

End of First Quarter: (5) Vaughan 17, (17) JF Ross 12

-More trouble with full court pressure for the Royals. An inbound steal under their own basket and a quick 2, and in the blink of an eye it's a double digit lead for Vaughan (23-12).

-For a brief second, the "score" in the top of the feed read "JF Ross 125, Vaughan 27". If only. It's 27-15 Vaughan after a Ross three to end a 10-0 run. 3:47 left to play in the half.

-The Voyageurs have taken this game over and are wearing down the Royals. 34-17 Vaughan with 2:00 left first half.

Halftime: (5) Vaughan 38, (17) JF Ross 17

-Some sloppy play by both teams to start the third. Vaughan has increased their lead to 45-21.

-Ross continuing to fight hard, and they're starting to find some room inside now that they're attacking. An "and one" has them down 50-27 with 3:00 left.

-Not good for Ross. Turnovers on a couple straight possessions and Vaughan is running the other way for layups.....

End of Third Quarter: (5) Vaughan 60, (17) JF Ross 29

-With a 31 point lead, the fourth quarter is going to be a formality. That said, it's a good opportunity for Ross' young team to get some valuable OFSAA experience. They'll have another game later this evening against either Pope John Paul or Eastern Commerce.

-Vaughan leads 64-36 with 4:00 left.

-Ross got within 25, but back-to-back 3's have stretched this one to 70-39 for Vaughan.

And the Royals do break 40, but fall to Vaughan by a 76-42 final.

OFSAA AAA: North Park vs. St. Theresa (Midland)

Quarter 1

Starting for North Park: #22 Cale McDonald, #23 Marcus Hamilton, #32 Mark Dickens, #42 Dave Eves, and #44 Mike Dulmage.

-Tip to North Park. St. Theresa's starts in a 2-3 zone.

-A couple misses early. North Park has also settled into a 2-3 on defense.

-The Trojans have taken control early by cashing a couple three-pointers early, 6-0 4:00 into the game.

-North Park hits a layup by fast breaking off a made free throw and lead 8-4 with 2:00 left in the first.

-North Park leads 10-6 with just over 1:00 left in the first, but they are starting to get in some foul trouble. Another foul and 2 St. Theresa's FTs make it 10-8.

-HUGE fall-away three at the buzzer for the Trojans! 13-8 NP after one. Cale McDonald leads North Park with 6 points, while Marcus Hamilton has 3 after one. A couple Trojans are in trouble, including starting centre Mike Dulmage with 2.

-ANOTHER three by McDonald is cause for a Thunder timeout (16-10, 6:51 left 2Q). I think they have got to be considering coming out of their zone now.

-Looks like St. Theresa's went on a big 12-2 run to close the half, and lead 22-18 at the break. Cale McDonald leads NP with 9 points, while Brandon Slote has 7 for the Thunder. Note: OFSAA website is incorrectly showing 22-18 North Park score, I'm getting this directly from the scoreboard.

Third Quarter

-Quick three by St. Theresa's off the bat increases the lead to 25-18.

-27-20 St. Theresa's with 5:15 left.

-A quick 6-0 run by North Park has them down one (27-26), with 3:20 left in the third.

-The Trojans lead, 29-28 after three quarters. McDonald has 13 of their points.

Fourth Quarter

-35-30 North Park, technical foul on Dave Eves after he scored a NPC basket gives the Thunder two FTs and they cut it to 35-32 with 5:40 left.

-Still 35-32 with just over 4:00 to play, North Park has switched to man-to-man defensively.....

-Shooting foul on St. T's and 1-of-2 for NPC give them the two-possession advantage (36-32) now with under 4:00 to play.

-Some more free-throws for both sides and it's 38-33 North Park with 3:00 to play.

-The Trojans are coming closer to closing this one out ---- now lead 40-33 with 2:15 left.

-Ouch. A 5-second call on NPC with them up 7 gives the ball to St. T's, who get an "and one" to cut the lead to 40-36.

-Full court pressure causes a turnover, St. T's has the three but missed it.....and foul NPC on the rebound. 40-36 with 1:47 left.

-Things getting a little shaky late ---- still 40-36 with 1:15 left, St. T's in possession after a jump ball.

-An AND ONE by St. T's has them down 40-39 with 41.7 left, NPC back to the line ---- where they make 2 to lead 42-39. 36.1 seconds left.

-North Park gets a huge steal and Mark Dickens is fouled with 19.9 left. Makes 1-of-2 but NPC secures the offensive board and makes 2 more FTs to lead 45-39 with 15 seconds left. This one looks to be over....

-Another FT at the end makes the final North Park 46, St. Theresa's 39.

-Looks like #10 Frontenac held off #4 Jarvis CI by 3 (39-36). So it actually doesn't get easier for NPC --- they'll take on Jarvis tomorrow.

OFSAA AAA: Top Teams Off to Shaky Start

A handful of games are in the books already at "AAA" OFSAA in Kingston.

The two top seeds (#1 Oakville Loyola and #2 Whitby Anderson CVI) got early-morning wake-up calls.

Loyola led 32-23 at halftime but watched as the Oaks tied things up at 58 to force OT. Loyola was able to escape the extra frame with a 63-58 victory.

Anderson, who would play North Park in the quarterfinals if all goes "according to form" (which it rarely does) - trailed #12 North Bay West Ferris by one at halftime before pulling away in the second half for a 71-56 victory. A quick note to North Park, if you do meet up with Anderson you might want to focus on the two guys that essentially "are" Anderson's team ---- Justin Edwards and Dyshawn Pierre. Combined, they pumped home 59 points in this one (Edwards - 31, Pierre - 28). The two also lit up Resurrection for similar numbers during a 93-80 victory in tournament play.

OFSAA Previews: Owen Sound & Waterford DHS

The OSCVI Falcons (AA) and Waterford DHS Wolves (A) will be the final CWOSSA teams tipping off their OFSAA 2010 games today.

Owen Sound, the #13 seed in AA, will face #7 Timmins. The Falcons are making their first OFSAA appearance, while Timmins has 16 OFSAA medals in their school's history, including 5 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze. They have a solid club (34-10 on the year) here seeking to add to that total.

The Blues have had respectable losses to top GTA teams (68-55 to #2 AAAA school Mother Teresa, 74-55 to #3 AAAA school JC Richardson), and have some size that should help them contain Owen Sound's big man Ben Singbeil to an extent.

I'm thinking the Blues will use their experience from their extremely difficult schedule to be able to power past the Falcons in this first round game ---- especially as OSCVI gets their feet wet.

Meanwhile, up in Sturgeon Falls, the #7 Waterford Wolves start out their OFSAA schedule against #13 Holy Trinity CSS of Cornwall. The Wolves (in my humble opinion) are a little underrated here as a #7 seed --- though to be fair, the "A" tournament is by far the hardest of all to seed.

Look for Waterford, who gained valuable experience at last year's OFSAA championships, to take the first steps towards a possible medal by defeating Trinity in their first round game.

OFSAA AAAA Preview: (2) Mother Teresa vs (11) Bluevale CI

(2) Mother Teresa Titans (26-8, 13-0 League)

The Mother Teresa Titans have come a long way.

A long way, that is, since the start of the year. Many of you may "remember the Titans" as a team that struggled a bit at the Heinbuch, barely holding off Kitchener Collegiate by a 71-63 final.

Gone were guys like 6'9" C Maurice Walker (prep school), Ashton Khan, and others from last year's roster. In fact, MT returned just one starter and five players overall --- meaning 8 new faces were on this year's roster when they showed up in Kitchener for the Heinbuch.

Mother Teresa definitely experienced some growing pains early in the year. Of their 8 losses, 6 of them were before December 12th.

Then, things started clicking. The Titans knocked off a potential OFSAA #1 seed, Father Henry Carr by a 54-52 count in the playoffs and claimed the TDCAA berth.

And you'd better believe that MT coach Richard Gallagher will be doing everything he can to ensure that his Titans don't get caught napping in this one. It was 5 years ago (crazy to think it's been that long) when Mother Teresa entered OFSAA as the #1 seed, but a pesky club from CWOSSA (KCI) was ranked.......oh wait, 11th, and gave them all they could handle before falling by a 58-51 final.

For the Knights to pull off a similar performance---or even win----they'll really need to get some production from guys other than Andrew Beney (who should have a decent game inside) and Stefan Cvrkalj. In addition, handling the Titans' pressure defense is a must. Furthermore, given Bluevale's limited depth (6-7 deep), they can't afford to get into a track-meet here. If the Titans get into the 60s, Bluevale's chances of winning decrease significantly.

JR from WCSSAAsports.com has a nice write-up from the Bluevale camp detailing their season and profiling some of their "lesser known" team members.

It would definitely be an upset if Bluevale won, but they have competed with good teams this season (see: Pickering at the Forest City Shootout)-----and have a lot of game experience to fall back on. In fact, of all teams at OFSAA, Bluevale's 44-game schedule was second only to #1 Pickering's 45 games played.

Do the Knights have another big win in their back pocket? We'll find out this afternoon.

OFSAA AAAA Preview: (5) Vaughan CI vs (17) John F. Ross

(17) JF Ross CVI (Guelph/25-12, 10-4 league)

Youth is served.

When the Vaughan Voyageurs and JF Ross Royals tip-off at 1:00pm on Monday afternoon, their rosters will feature a combined 15 players in grade 11, including 2 grade 10s Vaughan has moved up from their junior roster.

Look out for Vaughan over the next couple of years. Their junior program has been absolutely ridiculous over the last 2 years, and last year (2009) was insane. They were far and away the top junior team in the province ---- and were pretty good this year as well.

Henry Tan, one of the grade 10s moving up for OFSAA, put down 42 points in one game and ranked 2nd on Hooptowngta's list of top 25+ scorers.

Oh, and those junior guys from last year? Well they mixed in very well with Vaughan's 4 returning starters ---- grade 12 guards James Choi & CJ Isit and forwards Davion Eccles & Dejaun Sutherland. By mid-February they were clicking on all-cylinders and knocked off Pickering HS 65-57 in an exhibition game.

The way that Ross can keep this one competitive is if they can control the boards. With 3 starters 6'0" and under, the guard-oriented Voyageurs are one of the few teams that the Royals actually have a height advantage on. Of course, Vaughan more than makes up for that 'deficiency' with superb athleticism.

I look for Vaughan to win this one comfortably, but the Royals will gain some valuable experience in the process as they look for their young roster to make bigger splashes over the coming couple of years.

OFSAA AAA Preview: (7) North Park vs. (13) Midland St. Theresa

The North Park CVS Trojans of Brantford are the first CWOSSA team to tip-off at OFSAA today, playing the St. Theresa's Thunder of Midland in a noon game at Queen's University in Kingston. Check back here for the updates.

The Thunder have made a local tournament appearance this year --- having played at the Mike Moser Invitational Tournament. They made the finals before bowing out to Bluevale by a 68-55 final (note: Andrew & Karsten Beney were out that weekend).

Thunder Coach Dan Bouchard thinks his team is "still a year away from an OFSAA medal," he told the Alliston Herald, "our goal this year was to qualify for the provincial finals and be competitive."

This will be St. Theresa's first OFSAA appearance. They have a young roster with many rotational players only in grade 11 (frontcourt guys Derek Stobbs & Blake Hayley among them). Hayley was the Thunder's top performer (14 points) in their 47-35 GBSSAA championship victory over St. Joseph's of Barrie.

I look for Coach Todd Andrew's veteran Trojans, who have played a very tough tournament schedule this year, to take this opening round game under the leadership of Dave Eves, Cale McDonald and Mark Dickens. But it won't come easy.

"Now you're getting the best of the best," he told the Brant News, "if you're not ready to play, you'll be going home."

Of course, a first round loss isn't the end of the world at OFSAA with the "double-knockout" format. North Park will play either #4 Jarvis CI of Toronto or #10 Frontenac of Kingston on Tuesday morning ---- both should be tough games. Frontenac participated in Guelph Centennial's East Side Mario tournament, where they defeated both Cameron Heights (60-37) and SJAM (34-31) before falling to Centennial (55-50) in the final.

Alumni: Dietrich Named to OCAA All-Rookie Team

Former WCI guard Rebecca Dietrich was named to the OCAA West Division All-Rookie team earlier this week.

Dietrich, a first-year player with the Humber College Hawks (11-3 OCAA) finished her year averaging 7.6 PPG. She pulled in a team-high 71 rebounds (5.1 RPG) and also chipped in 1.8 steals per contest.

Aside from the award winners that we've been mentioning here lately, we'll try and get a run-down to see how the rest of our CWOSSA alums fared this season. Stay tuned.

Alumni: Bradbury Named to OCAA All-Rookie Team

Former Forest Heights guard Will Bradbury (second from left in this 2008 WCSSAA all-star pic from The Waterloo Region Record) was named to the OCAA Western Division All-Rookie team, as per a release on the OCAA website.

Bradbury's Fanshawe (London) College Falcons finished the year 14-4 in OCAA play. As for Bradbury, he provided steady guard play averaging 10.6 PPG, 1.7 RPG and 1.1 steals per contest. He knocked down 33 three-pointers in Fanshawe's 18 games.

Alumni: McIntyre, MacDonald Named 2nd Team OUA West All-Stars

Two CWOSSA alums were among the OUA basketball award winners recently announced.

Cam McIntyre (KCI '06) and Jesse MacDonald (Assumption '05) were named to the OUA West 2nd All-Star team.
