BAA: Girls All-Star Game Results

OSCVI in Owen Sound was the site last night for the BAA Girls' Basketball All-Star Night hosted by the Grey Bruce Association of Basketball Officials.  The night was a huge success with the bleachers packed with appreciative fans who contributed money or food as their price of admission.  All food and profits will be donated to local food banks.

The Junior game kicked off the evening at 6 PM and was an exciting affair.  The North Squad, coached by Adam Jones and Maria MacLeod of St. Marys HS, led for most of the game.  A strong finish by the South Squad, coached by Scott Mahood and Vince Yenssen of Kincardine DSS, pulled out a 36 to 30 victory for the South.  Victoria Carroll of Sacred Heart SS led the South to victory pouring in 12 points.  Jean Ann Keelan of Kincardine had 10.  Amanda Martin of OSCVI led the North with 10 points helped by
Kendra Schultz of PSDS with 7 points.

At half-time of the Junior game Mason Macumber of OSCVI won the 3-point shooting competition pouring in 7 threes in the one minute allotted time.  Emily Scott and Jean Ann Keelan of KDSS won the Two-Ball competition with a score of 40 points.

The Senior game proved to be equally as exciting with the North, coached by Jeff Cooper of OSCVI and Ken Lougheed of WHSS, leading most of the way only to have the South, coached by Kevin Matheson of WDSS and Vince Yenssen of KDSS, come back and take a late game lead.  This time the North did prevail coming away with an entertaining 54 - 49 victory.  The North was led by Maddie Lougheed of WHSS with 10 points, Audrey Liskauskas of OSCVI with 9 and Emily Lawler of GHSS with 7.  Kelly Gribbons of Saugeen DSS led the South with 12 points and Faith Mwasalla of KDSS chipped in with 9.

The Senior half-time competition winners were Margo Triedlinger of KDSS who poured in 9 and then 8 three-pointers in the two rounds of the 3-Point Shootout.  Karly Moore and Samantha Weber were the last shooters and took away the Two-Ball title pouring in 49 points. 

The girls were all presented with souvenir T-shirts of the event graciously donated by SBP Custom Embroidery and East Side Marios.  The half-time competition winners were given prizes by Rintoul's LeisureScapes (Phil Rintoul), Re/Max (Darlene Jones), Pet Hospital (Dr. Kevin Belbeck) and freiburger communications (Marty Tengelis).  These generous sponsors allowed us to run an exciting evening for these 38 outstanding young athletes.

Senior: Falcons, Gaels Prove to Be Unkind Hosts

The Centre Wellington Falcons and the Cameron Heights Golden Gaels were unkind hosts as both took home respective titles at their home senior tournaments this past weekend.

The Falcons knocked off St. Benedict (Cambridge) in the final by 11, after defeating Centre Dufferin by 7 in the semifinals.  St. Benedict defeated St. James in the other semifinal.

Carlo Zanette poured in 45 points in the 3rd place game as Centre Dufferin routed St. James by a 78-44 final.

Meanwhile, in Kitchener, it was four CWOSSA teams that made it to the semifinals of the Cameron Heights Invitational Tournament ---- CHCI, WCI, Bluevale and Centennial.

As noted below, Cameron defeated WCI 65-46 in one semifinal, while Centennial took out Bluevale 41-30 in the other.

The Gaels would go on to defeat Centennial in the championship final.

Senior Trojans Take Tip-Off Tourney

The North Park Trojans captured the Ed O'Leary Memorial/Brantford Expositor Tip-Off Tournament this past weekend, defeating the St. John's Green Eagles in the championship final by a 47-39 final.

Marcus Hamilton had 19 for the Trojans, with Marcus Jones adding 7.  St. John's received 13 from Tyler Van Leeuwen and 11 from JP Yurcich.

Heinbuch: Eagles Capture Silver Championship; Lance & Thompson Named All-Stars

The St. Mary's Eagles saved a little face for CWOSSA this past weekend at the Heinbuch tournament.

With the Resurrection Phoenix and JF Ross Royals (two teams that many thought might be able to make some noise) going winless, the Eagles picked up three wins themselves en route to a "silver bracket" championship.

After defeating Sarnia Northern 73-57 in their opener on Friday afternoon (Alex Thompson, 22), the Eagles dropped a close 57-51 affair to Cardinal Newman (Henry Bankazo, 14).  This 1-1 start moved St. Mary's to the silver division with Pope John Paul II (Scarborough), Northern (Toronto) and St. Thomas More (Hamilton).

The silver semifinal saw the Eagles dispatch Pope John Paul II by a 67-60 final, backed by a tremendous 26-point effort from PG Isaac Lance.

Adam Voll was the fourth Eagle to lead the way in scoring for their four games, chipping in 15 in the final as they handled Toronto Northern 71-54.

The Silver championship marked the first time that a CWOSSA team had won a silver (or higher) championship since Cambridge Preston captured the 2002 silver title.  

The Eagles also had two all-star selections --- Voll was named a second-team all-star, while Lance received first-team accolades.

Lance's first-team selection made him the first CWOSSA player to receive this distinction since KCI's Ronnie Sweeney back in 2004.

Javon Masters (Forest Heights) also received second-team honours after his FHCI Trojans defeated Sarnia Northern 50-44 in the consolation final (Juwan Miller, 17).  The Trojans also defeated west Kitchener rival Resurrection 44-42 in the consolation semifinals (Miller, 27; Mike Pereira, RCSS, 13).

JF Ross dropped their consolation semifinal to Sarnia Northern 65-60 (Mike Friesen, 17), while Grand River made the bronze bracket but were dumped 73-38 by Ajax J. Clarke Richardson (Filip Cvrkalj, 18).

Brantford Expositor: Cinderella Run Comes To An End

The St. John's College Green Eagles senior girls may not have won gold medals at OFSAA this past weekend, but what they may have done is left their mark in high-school basketball history.

Heading into the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations Quad-A championships in Windsor this weekend as the 11th-ranked team in the 16-team tournament, the Eagles knocked off the No. 2, 3 and 6 seeds to get to the championship game.

In the final, St. John's came up just short of finishing on top, losing to the top-ranked St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School Knights 48-31.

"They don't think this has ever happened before," SJC coach Matt Lynch said of an 11th seeded team making it to the OFSAA Quad-A championship game by upsetting so many top-ranked teams.

"It was a pretty unbelievable weekend. It was just one win after another after another.

"What impressed me the most is that the girls believed they could win every game."

And why not?

For the past several years, the Green Eagles have gone into OFSAA with nothing but medals on their minds.

In 2008, the run began with silver medals at the AAA championship and after that, at the Quad-A level, SJC won the championship in 2009 and were fourth in 2010.

St. Thomas More, the 2004 OFSAA champs out of Hamilton, had lost three times this season -all to Hamilton's St. Mary, the OFSAA AAA champions from this past weekend.

St. Thomas More began the tournament with a win - defeating SJC 54-39.

"I think we came into that game a bit timid," said Lynch. "We battled back and had it within eight points in the third quarter."

After that game, St. Thomas More romped, beating each of its opponents by larger scores, including a 74-49 decision in the semifinals against Waterloo Collegiate Institute, which beat SJC for the Central Western Ontario Secondary School Association championship.

As for St. John's, it followed up its Thursday loss to the Vikings with a 36-26 win against sixth-seeded Pickering High School.

On Friday, in the quarterfinals, SJC beat No. 3 ranked Westdale Secondary School from Hamilton 54-48 before knocking off second-ranked Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School out of London 45-42 in the semifinals.

In the final, although St. John's lost by a large margin, at one point things were quite close.

"I think it ended up being 17 points but halfway through the third quarter we got it to four points," said Lynch, whose assistant coaches included his brother, Mark, and Gina Tarantello.

"They hit some threes on us and they had a run after that."

Regardless, Lynch was pleased with his team's OFSAA effort.

"They were awesome, especially the leadership we got from Katie Polischuk," he said. "Every game we went into, every team knew they had to shut her down and she still scored.

"She had one of the best tournaments I've ever seen her play."

Polischuk, an outstanding talent who plays at the provincial level, had help from a strong group of Grade 12 players that included Charlotte Clark, Shawni Hnatiuk, Brooke Glover, Miranda Consorti and Shaina McDonald.

Also making strong contributions were Grade 11 players Lauren Dubois, Bridget Monkman, Megan Piette and Rebecca Dabor.

"The whole team was fearless," said Lynch. "They could care less what the other teams had."

Obviously some players will move on but this particular group has left a lasting impression.

"As a coach, I couldn't ask for anything more," said Lynch. "The girls came to practice with an excellent attitude. To be No. 2 in the province is outstanding.

"We're so happy and excited that the girls have done something that may never have been done before. We're thrilled for them."

Junior: Renegades Capture 2nd Consecutive Oakville Tournament

The Grand River Renegades captured their second consecutive Oakville Trafalgar Basketball tournament, defeated Orchard Park (Stoney Creek) in the championship final 78-68.

The Rens also defeated Oakville Trafalgar and Aldershot to advance to the championship final.

Saturday: Updates

Heinbuch
Starting bright and early, the JF Ross Royals were eliminated in a 9am game at the Heinbuch, losing their consolation bracket semifinal to Sarnia Northern, 65-60.  Mike Friesen had 17 in the loss for Ross, while Reda Souala had 19 for Northern.

The Grand River Renegades were handled by JC Richardson in a 9am bronze bracket semifinal, losing 73-38.  Filip Cvrkalj (18) and Daniel Harun (8) were the Rens' high scorers, while Jaylen Babb-Harrison had 19 for the Storm.

Surprisingly, the Resurrection Phoenix dropped all 3 games at the Heinbuch after falling 44-42 to Forest Heights (Juwan Miller, 27).  The Trojans are now facing Sarnia Northern in the consolation final.

Meanwhile, St. Mary's advanced to the silver bracket final after getting 26 from Isaac Lance and beating Pope John Paul II 67-60.  St. Mary's will play Toronto Northern in the Silver final.


RCSS Junior Tournament
The Cameron Heights juniors went undefeated (with one "tie") at the 5-team round-robin tournament after taking care of Resurrection easily in the "championship final".


CHCI Tournament
Two "all-CWOSSA" semifinals in this one; in the one at Cameron that I attended, the Cameron Heights Gaels pulled away late with some hot shooting to defeat WCI 65-46.

For Cameron, Vedran Dmitrovic (23) and Nem Simic (15) led the way.  Jason Thompson netted 12, (Eastwood transfer) Terell Christian had 6, Vladimir Matovic had 6 and Milos Jovkovic had 3.

WCI had a team-high 15 from Jacob Ranton, 7 from Zach Totzke and Malcolm Piazza, 5 from Patrick Wildgen, 4 from Alex Heap and Dani Elgadi, and 2 each from Shafi Mutware and Alex Anagnostopoulos.

Cameron Heights will play the winner of Bluevale/Centennial this evening in the championship final.

OFSAA: St. John's Advances To Gold Medal Game!

So much for being a #11 seed.

The St. John's Green Eagles advanced to the OFSAA "AAAA" gold medal game by knocking off #2 Mother Teresa (London) 45-42 in a Friday evening semifinal game.

Interestingly enough, the Green Eagles will be playing the team they lost to in the first round on Thursday, the #1 St. Thomas More Knights, in the OFSAA final.  With the modified double-elimination format, both STM and St. John's ran the table and now find themselves facing off in tomorrow afternoon's final (4:00pm).  I'll go on a limb and say that this probably hasn't ever happened at an OFSAA championship before (at least that I can remember).

St. Thomas More defeated CWOSSA's other entry, the WCI Vikings, 74-49 in the other semifinal.

To get to the final, St. John's got past #6 Pickering, #3 Westdale (Hamilton) and then Mother Teresa in succession.

Two teams, two medals for CWOSSA at "AAAA" OFSAA.  Not too shabby!

WCI, North Park, St. John's Through to QFs at OFSAA

All of our CWOSSA teams are still alive at OFSAA.

A and AA teams only had one game today; however, all three of our teams at AAA (North Park) and AAAA (WCI & St. John's) are all through to the semifinals.

Starting in AAAA, the WCI Vikings (#4) defeated #7 Toronto Northern 44-36 in their second round game.  The Vikes will next play at 1pm, against #5 Eastern Commerce --- a rematch of a double-OT tournament game they played last month.

Meanwhile, Brantford St. John's (#11) knocked out #6 Pickering by a 36-26 final.  Katie Polischuk outscored Pickering by herself in that one, coming through with a huge 27-point performance.

The Green Eagles also will play at 1pm tomorrow, against #3 Hamilton Westdale.

In AAA at Kingston, North Park overcame a slow start to dominate the second half against #12 Humberside to win going away, 45-28.  The Trojans will play #4 Downsview (Toronto) in the QFs tomorrow.

Heinbuch: Forest Heights Loses to Loyola by 7......or 11

The Forest Heights Trojans dropped a respectable 73-62 (as per the scoreboard) decision to the Loyola (Oakville) Hawks on Thursday evening at St. Mary's; in actuality, the score was 71-64 as the scoreboard inadvertently credited a 3rd quarter Forest Heights basket to Loyola that went uncorrected.

It was definitely a game of runs; Forest Heights fell behind by 13 at the break, but brought things back within single digits in the fourth quarter.  Loyola quickly responded, getting an "and-one" dunk by Jake Babic to take a 68-54 lead with 3:30 to go.

The Trojans kept firing, scoring the next five points and getting within 9 (68-57) about a minute and a half later.  However, there just wasn't enough time left on the clock for a comeback in this one.

All that being said, still a pretty good performance against last year's "AAAA" silver medalists, who are still considered one of the "upper tier" teams in the province.

Forest Heights guard Javon Masters had a tremendous outing, going off for 37 points, which equaled the fifth highest single-game total in Heinbuch history.  Masters took a whopping 22 free-throw attempts, converting 19 of them.  Juwan Miller added 12 and Dylan George 8 more for the Trojans.

For Loyola, their star forward Rohan Boney netted 22 points --- including Loyola's first two of the game on a vicious slam.  He also added 13 rebounds for the Hawks, while Tomi Skoko hit four threes en route to a 20 point effort.

Due to scheduling conflicts, Eastern Commerce and Resurrection will not be participating in the SOSI tournament in early December.

WCI will now play Mississauga Loyola in the first round, instead of Eastern Commerce.
