WCSSAA Senior: Thursday Results

In notable games, the SJAM Highlanders won the "battle of the undefeateds" over Cameron Heights, while Forest Heights stayed perfect --- albeit barely --- by sneaking out a 1-point win at WCI.

The Gaels come crashing down after their big win against Bluevale.  Looks like Ben Reyhani did play, and along with Edem Ame were a two-man machine in this one (Ame - 26, Reyhani - 22).  Cameron was led by Amjed Osman with 16 while Adnan Shah chipped in 12.

Grand River 58, Eastwood 54
My Pick:  GRCI
I said it might be close, and it was.  The Rens get the important win thanks to another 20+ effort from Osama Qahwash (22) while Filip Cvrkalj added 13.  ECI saw Jerelle Vaughan lead the way with 15; Gondor Teny added 13.

Forest Heights 63, WCI 62
My Pick:  FHCI
In a near replication of the junior score, the Trojans get a nail-biting win.  WCI actually led by 1 with a few seconds left but turned the ball over and Gage Paquette had a put-back at the buzzer to win the game.  Javon Masters continued his solid play, pouring in 28 points; Paquette had 20 more for FHCI.  WCI received 20 from grade 10 guard Adam Anagnostopoulos while Alex Copp added 17.

KCI 48, Galt 36
My Pick:  KCI
The Raiders are a bit of a surprise to start the year (4-2).  Lazar Dabic (14) and Alex Galea (11) led the way while GCI received 10 from Gabe Vidal and 9 from Jack Simmons.

Southwood 48, Glenview Park 37
My Pick:  SSS
Big win for the Sabres as they move back to .500 (3-3).  They were able to withstand a 22-point effort from GPSS' Erist Wame in this one, thanks to 19 from Brian Doran and 10 from Greg Marjerrison.

Huron Heights 81, WODSS 72
My Pick:  WODSS
In the (combined) highest-scoring game of the season thus far, Huron Heights received a WCSSAA regular-season high 38 points from Sean Samuel and 21 from Shayan Butt as they pick up win number 2 on the season.  WODSS' balanced effort was led by Tyler Bowman and Chris Thomson (12 each).

WCSSAA Junior: Thursday Results

Another great day of action in the junior league with three games decided by three points or less.  Here are the results:

Bluevale 53, Elmira 27
No trouble for the Knights against an improving Lancer squad; they received 13 from Jeevanjot Sidhu and 12 from Lukas Seibert in the win.  EDSS saw Walker Stuart score 6 and Scott Carere add 5.

Cameron Heights 51, SJAM 36
The Gaels head into the break undefeated after taking care of the Highlanders on the road.  Jason Thompson (12) and Milos Jovkovic (12) led the way for Cameron, while SJAM got 22 from star player Nebojsa Sarkanovic.  Yannis Carayannopoulis chipped in 6 more for the 'Landers.

Eastwood 45, Grand River 42
The Rebels get a bit of revenge after falling to GRCI in their tournament final last weekend.  On Thursday, Sayyad Yeganehnia scored 14 for Eastwood while Victor Mgabe added 9.  GRCI received strong efforts from their top 2 players --- Chuder Teny scored 19 while Murtada Khamis added 13.

Forest Heights 64, WCI 63
The Trojans stay undefeated, albeit barely on the road at WCI.  Juwan Miller had yet another 30+ effort, knocking in 34 points in this one, while Trojan teammate Ian Anderson added 12.  WCI received 18 from Nick Johnny, 13 from Ezai Mizrahi and 13 from Adam Carter.

Galt 52, KCI 44
Don't look now but the Ghosts have eclipsed last year's win total and are 4-2 heading into the break.  Scott Holton (17) and Tajinder Lall (16) led Galt on Thursday, while KCI received 16 from Matt McKinnon and 11 from Stefan Malivuk.

Jacob Hespeler 47, Preston 46
In a very important game for both clubs, it was the Hespeler Hawks evening their record at 3-3 heading into the break by scoring a 1 point win over PHS.  Saajan Arora knocked in 22 for Hespeler, while James Roberts netted 8.  Preston received a team-high 18 from Aaron Colter and 8 points from Marsellis Subban.

Glenview Park 50, Southwood 28
After slipping up on Tuesday against GCI, the Panthers get back in the win column.  Sean Davidson again led the way for GPSS, with 17, while Chris Thompson added 11.  Southwood was led by Brandon Starr, with 9.

Huron Heights 52, WODSS 37
In a battle of 0-5 teams, the Huskies pick up their first win on the season over W-O.  Sloane Irvine and Alex Deadman had 12 each for HHHS in the win; Alex Trotter and Garner Matthews were the Crusaders in double figures with 10 each.

Brantford Expositor: Trojans Make Their Inside Presence Felt

North Park Collegiate Trojans don't want to become a guard oriented team so they've been working on developing an inside presence.

"We didn't shoot the ball very well but we found another way to win," head coach Todd Andrew said after the Trojans' 52-31 victory over the Paris District High School Panthers at North Park on Thursday night.

"We established our inside presence with (Logan) Varga and (Brandon) Webster that we've been working on over the last couple of weeks."

Varga and Webster are both forwards. Varga stands six-foot-four and Webster is six-foot-five.

Neither Varga nor Webster is considered big by today's high school standards but both are quick with good leaping ability.

"We want to get them the ball and get them to attack the basket," Andrew said. "Early in the season, they were settling for medium range jump shots or kicking the ball out (to the guards).

"It (gaining an inside presence) gives us another element, makes it more difficult for teams to defend."

Varga and Webster each scored nine points against the Panthers.

Marcus Hamilton, a guard, led the Trojans with 12 points.

Jacob Kelley scored 16 points for the Panthers and Josh Fabe netted seven points.

The Trojans will be busy over the Christmas break as they'll play in the Purple and White Tournament at the University of Western Ontario in London on December 29 and 30.

The Trojans are also scheduled to play in the 32-team St. Benedict's tournament in Cambridge on January 7 and 8.

North Park defeated Paris District 71-39 in the junior game.

Tyarr Powell-Hodges scored 11 points to top the North Park scoring list.

Jagtha Matharoo and Vishol Brar each got eight points.

Kevin Hmiel scored 14 points to lead the junior Panthers. Casey Ransahai got nine points. Ian Lawrence and Graeme Campbell netted six points each.

St. John's College Green Eagles swept a doubleheader from Pauline Johnson Collegiate at PJC.

The junior Eagles defeated the PJC Warriors 78-13. Leading scorers: Junior Eagles -Steve Szasz 13, Tim Dawson 11, Jacob LeBlanc 9. Warriors -Brandon Patterson 5, Cam Emmett 4, D.J. Johnson 3.

St. John's beat the PJC Thunderbirds 55-36 in the senior game. Leading scorers: Senior Eagles - Matt Digout 23, J.P. Yurcich 9, Tyler Van Leeuwen 8. Thunderbirds - Tyler Campbell 12, Tyler Thibert 9, Dakota Brush 6.

Brantford Collegiate Institute took a doubleheader from Assumption College Lions at BCI.

BCI Colts won the junior game 55-53. Leading scorers: BCI Colts -Mackenzie Mark 18, Chris Gorski 11, Liam MacNeil 10. Junior Lions - Austin Tlustos 20, Nolan Drong 12, Alvaro Saluta 4.

The BCI Mustangs eked out a 54-53 win in the senior contest. Leading scorers: BCI Mustangs -Alex Packer 16, Joseph Yelle 14, Tyler Mirco 9. Senior Lions -Andre Toic 23, Justin Thibideau 14, Jordan McCormick 10.

Senior Boys: St. Benedict CSS Tournament Draw (January 2011)

The St. Benedict CSS Senior Boys annual 32-team draw has been released, and again features a great mix of top CWOSSA teams and solid out of town opposition.

Don't look now but the W-O Crusaders may also improve to 4-2 before the break if they can get past Sean Samuel and Huron Heights.  It would be a big win for them if they can do it, as they have a bit tougher schedule after the break, starting with Cameron Heights on January 6th.

The veteran FHCI Trojans should beat the (more) youthful WCI Vikings today in Waterloo.

With both teams currently teetering on the edge of the playoff picture as we approach the halfway point, these clubs are in need of a win before the holidays.  Edge to Southwood, though Glenview does play well at home.

A rivalry game, so it might end up close but I like the Rens to be ahead at the end.

Junior: Purple & Gold Draw Released

Junior tournament co-hosted by Huron Heights and Resurrection in Kitchener, Friday January 7th and Saturday January 8th.

This year's tournament should again be an interesting & competitive affair.  Top entries would include defending champion Kitchener Cameron Heights, last year's runner up Guelph JF Ross, and London South (who beat Forest Heights earlier this year in Sarnia).  However, it seems that there are probably 8-10 teams that could win this thing if things go their way.

CWOSSA: Mark's Senior Girls All-Stars

We went through the juniors a couple days back, so check the archives for those.

Here's my senior girls' all-stars.  Again, keep in mind that this is one opinion (mine) and there is a lot of talent out in CWOSSA!

Again, like the juniors, each "team's" players are listed in no particular order.

First Team "All-CWOSSA"

Michelle Hudyn, Eastwood
The 6-foot-2 grade 11 forward had some huge scoring efforts this past season, including a 35-point outburst against SJAM back in October.  Of course, she also brings excellent rebounding and superb ball-handling (especially for her size) to the table as well.

Erica McFadden, Centre Wellington
A guard who transferred to the Fergus area from Chatham, McFadden quickly adjusted to her new teammates and was instrumental in helping lead the Falcons to the D10 title (where she scored 21 points in the championship game).  On the offensive end, she's equally dangerous as a shooter and as a penetrator --- which makes her a tough matchup for the opposition. 

Alyssa Shortt, Waterloo CI
Shortt is a "stat sheet stuffer" who is a triple-double threat whenever she steps onto the floor.  Along with her scoring capabilities, she's a great rebounder (especially from a guard position) and has great court awareness --- often setting her teammates up for open shots.

Erin Robbins, Cameron Heights
Robbins has been a big reason for the turnaround in girls' basketball at CHCI over the past couple of seasons; she's a tremendous all-around player (as you'd expect from a PG, particularly in terms of her great ball-handling skills and passing) and isn't afraid to score when necessary (double-digit 15+ performances).  She's also tremendously dedicated, having played through some injuries, especially towards the end of the season.

Kelly Van Leeuwen, St. John's
Over the last four years, Van Leeuwen's teams at St. John's are 72-0 in Brant County and 143-12 overall.  That pretty much speaks for itself right there, but the 5'9" PG is an outstanding all-around player with a great court sense and game management abilities.  She will be attending Niagara University (NCAA D1) next year on a basketball scholarship.

Second Team "All-CWOSSA"

Rachel Krushnisky, Centre Dufferin
Krushnisky doesn't get a lot of attention playing in the D4 league (where she was a league all-star selection), but she can put up some points in a hurry.  She definitely got some attention by pouring in 39 points in a tournament game against Cameron Heights --- a game that didn't even go to overtime. 

Kate MacTavish, KCI
MacTavish showed her capabilities with a dominating 31-point performance in the WCSSAA semifinals that helped the Raiders advance to the championship game.  She hit jumpers (excellent mid-range game, as well as three-point capability) and isn't afraid to drive the lane and look for contact. 

Alison Morris, Bishop Macdonell
Morris helped guide the Celts to yet another OFSAA appearance (and OFSAA medal). She may not have the "raw numbers" that some of the other selections do, but that in part speaks to the depth and balance of the Celtics. Like the other members of the "Morris clan" that have gone through Bishop Mac in recent years, she's solid fundamentally and a great shooter.

Kayla Santilli, St. John's
Santilli was key in the CWOSSA championship game for the Eagles, leading the squad in scoring (especially key with Van Leeuwen on the bench in foul-trouble).  She has a knack for finding the ball on the glass, even though she is classified as a guard.  Equally key is her enthusiasm and timing on the defensive end --- which resulted in many forced turnovers when St. John's ramped up their defensive pressure.

Kaitlyn Schenck, St. Mary's
When you talk about great offensive performers in CWOSSA, Schenck's name naturally comes into the discussion.  She averaged 30+ PPG a game last year as a junior in the CWOSSA championships, and didn't have much trouble adjusting to the senior game in grade 11.  She has deep three-point range and excellent body control when she takes what (for some other players, but not her) might be considered be poor shots.  Look for her to continue to torch the nets next season for the Eagles.   


Third Team "All-CWOSSA"

Siki Jez, Cameron Heights
Jez combines height, ball-handling ability, scoring touch and rebounding --- an interesting combination for Cameron's tallest (I think) player.  She can bring the ball up against pressure, and was one of the better three-point shooters in WCSSAA this season.  Her skill-set is definitely going to be of interest to CIS/OCAA coaches as she can fit a variety of needs.

Lindsay Taylor, Waterloo CI
We all know Taylor as a three-point bomber, but she's more than that.  In fact, one thing that often goes unrecognized is her defensive positioning (especially off the ball).  In grade 11 (and in her second season of senior ball) she was able to develop her abilities & confidence to the level where she will be one of the most dangerous players in WCSSAA next season. 

Megan Robinson, Resurrection
If you're looking for a true point guard, Robinson fits the definition.  In games that I've seen, she's made some dizzying passes and always seems to look for her teammates first.  That said, when she does pull the trigger (or drive the paint), generally good things will result.  She makes it hard for other teams to press, especially with her dribbling ability.

Sam Edwards, Monsingor Doyle
Edwards was a key reason why the 'Stangs were competitive with the rest of the D8 league, and pulled off wins over St. David and Resurrection this season.  In fact, she knocked in 32 against Rez and 29 against St. David during league play.  Like many of the others, she's more than just an offensive threat, but those numbers are eye-popping, especially when you consider that both performances occurred the SECOND time that the teams matched-up ---- meaning that they'd already seen her once.

Cassie Fletcher, North Park
Fletcher is among several North Park (CWOSSA AAA champs) candidates that I considered for the all-star squad, which is a testament to that team's depth.  Fletcher, who is in grade 11, was perhaps NPC's most consisent performer throughout the year, and saved some of her best efforts for last --- including a 31-point outburst at OFSAA against Etobicoke CI.  Needless to say, North Park should continue to contend over the next year or two with Fletcher and co. eligible to return.

D8: Wednesday Picks

The most intriguing game on the schedule should go to the home team, who have a bit too much depth for the Celtics.  Look for SDCSS to try to slow the pace of this one and hold St. Mary's in check (relatively speaking), though.

Brantford Expositor: Panthers Use Foul Shots to Sink Lions

Pauline Johnson Collegiate Thunderbirds are winless in Brant County high school senior boys basketball but there's a light flickering at the end of the tunnel.

Paris District High School Panthers, playing with a full lineup, made seven of eight foul shots in the final two minutes to defeat the T-Birds 51-46 at PJC on Tuesday night.

It was the second consecutive win for the Panthers, who defeated the Assumption College Lions last Thursday despite playing without two of their best players.

The Panthers now stand at 3-1 while the T-Birds are in the cellar at 0-4.

Ryan Maracle, who has taken over the head coaching duties of the T-Birds from Joe Tice this season, believes the squad is starting to turn a corner.

"We went to a tournament on the weekend and the chemistry is starting to get there. But, if we don't get them out to practise, the chemistry will go away," Maracle said.

"Right now, I'm coaching (giving playing time) who I trust the most because we haven't been getting everyone out to practice. It's whoever knows the plays that I've got to put out on the court."

Maracle believes that the T-Birds practices will be better attended now that there's better chemistry in the locker room.

"It's better compared to the beginning of the year," Maracle said. "It's just hard to get them to play with continuous energy."

The T-Birds led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter but the score was tied 21-21 at the half and 34-34 after three quarters.

The T-Birds led 43-42 in the fourth quarter but the Panthers closed the game with a 9-3 run.

Power forward Parker McIntyre, who was late arriving for the game and missed most of the first quarter, made up for lost time by scoring 18 points to lead the Panthers' attack.

Jacob Kelley scored 10 points. Josh Fabe and Travis Taylor each got six points.

Tyler Campbell got 17 points and Tyler Thibert scored 16 for the T-Birds. Thibert only played about half the game because of foul trouble.

Mike Campbell scored eight points for PJC.

Paris District earned a 40-34 win over the PJC Warriors in the junior game.

Casey Ransahai scored 17 points for the Panthers. Kevin Hmiel and Graham Campbell each scored six points.

Brandon Patterson scored 23 points for the Warriors. David Pitters added nine points.

St. John's swept a doubleheader from Assumption College Lions.

The Green Eagles, playing at St. John's, defeated Assumption 63-19 in junior. Leading scorers: St. John's -Cam Post 12, Jacob LeBlanc 10, Jake Brennan 10. Assumption -Austin Tlustos 8, Ronald Taylor 4.

In senior, St. John's won 51-32. Leading scorers: St. John's -Tyler Van Leeuwen 17, Mike Perilli 10, J.P. Yurcich 7. Assumption -Andre Toic 11, Pat Wilson 11, Justin Thibideau 6.

North Park Collegiate Trojans also won a doubleheader over Brantford Collegiate Institute.

WCSSAA: Black Tuesday Results

"Black Tuesday" would be in reference to my picks on the night --- 25-2 going into action but stumbled to a 3-4 day.  Congrats to those that surprised me, including KCI, Cameron Heights, Eastwood, and Galt (though the latter was more of a "toss-up").

The Rebs used a balanced attack to pick up a big win over WCI.  Terel Christian (14), Jerelle Vaughan (12) and Zaman Sindy (12) were the ECI players in double digits, while the Vikings received 13 from Alex Copp and 11 from Jacob Ranton.

Forest Heights 80, Grand River 40
My Pick:  FHCI
I did pick the Trojans to win --- but not necessarily by 40 points --- an impressive performance to say the least.  Javon Masters had 19 in the win, while Paul Anderson added 13 for FHCI.  Daniel Harun (7) and Filip Cvrkalj (6) had the top efforts for the Rens.

Galt 58, Glenview Park 50
My Pick:  GPSS
The Ghosts pick up their first "real" win of the year and improve to .500 (2-2).  Jack Simmons netted 14 in the win, while Nic Bradford added 13 for GCI.  Erist Wame was held in check on this afternoon; the top Panther scorers were Devin Vinandy (15) and Winston Karges (11).

Huron Heights 62, Jacob Hespeler 53
My Pick:  HHHS
Big win for the Huskies on the road as they get into the win column.  Sean Samuel had another strong outing (25 points) while Darcy Jacobs added 12.  For JHSS, Lucas Marsden netted 15 and Brendan Vandyken had 13.

KCI 63, Southwood 48
My Pick:  SSS
Great effort by the Raiders on the road as they win a big battle of "AAA" squads.  Alex Galea had 21 for KCI, while Lazar Dabic added 16.  Brian Doran was solid in defeat for Southwood, pouring in 23.  Josh Parsons also had 12 for the Sabres.

WODSS 59, Preston 48
My Pick:  PHS
Probably a good time to start getting off the PHS bandwagon, after they've cost me a couple games over the past few days.  Tyler Bowman (12) and Erich Wooley (10) had the top Crusader efforts, while Sean Holmes netted 23 for Preston in the loss.

WCSSAA: Junior Results from December 14

Cameron Heights 56, Bluevale 49
The Gaels extend their record to 5-0 while handing the Knights their first loss of the campaign.  Milos Jovkovic (15) and Vladimir Matovic (12) led Cameron in this one, while John Efechaobar (15) and Lukas Seibert (12) were Bluevale's top scorers on the night.

Eastwood 47, WCI 42
The Rebels get a bit of revenge in this rematch of a WCSSAA junior quarterfinal from a season ago.  Tre Nicholson and Sayyad Yeganehnia had 13 each to pace Eastwood, while the Vikes received 14 from Nick Johnny and 11 from Etai Mizrahi.

Elmira 43, SJAM 35
What a difference a season makes.  After going winless last year, the EDSS Lancers take care of the SJAM Highlanders at home.  Given SJAM's success over the past few years, I'm curious to know if this was Elmira's first-ever win over SJAM in junior boys basketball?  Walker Stewart led Elmira with 10, while Brian Gruneberg chipped in 8.  The Highlanders received 14 from Nebojsa Sarkanovic.

Forest Heights 68, Grand River 67
Wow - looks like a great game over in West Kitchener last night.  Juwan Miller had another 30+ performance, with 30 on the nose.  Ian Anderson added 17 for the Trojans, while GRCI received 17 each from Chuder Teny and Murtada Khamis.

Galt 39, Glenview Park 36
The Ghosts knock Glenview from the unbeaten ranks in a low-scoring affair.  That's not to say that there weren't some impressive individual performances, as GCI's Scott Holton netted 17 in the win, while GPSS star Sean Davidson had 15. 

Jacob Hespeler 55, Huron Heights 49
In a battle between two "AAA" schools, JHSS gets the win over Huron Heights.  Saajan Arora had a solid game for Hespeler, leading all scorers with 27; James Roberts added 13 more for the Hawks.  Huron Heights received 15 from Alex Deadman and 11 from Arshid Babury.

KCI 48, Southwood 29
Don't look now but the Raiders are 4-1 to start the season, after a solid road win at Southwood.  Matt McKinnon had 16 to lead KCI, while Colton Quigley netted 10 for SSS.

Preston 40, WODSS 14
In a battle between two winless clubs, Preston takes their first win of the season.  Marcellis Subban had 13 for PHS, while Jacob Curtis was tops for the Crusaders with 6.
