D8 Takes Junior, Senior All-Star Games in Annual Showdown

D10 Sr. All-Stars
The District 8 junior and senior all-stars were victorious yesterday evening in both games against their District 10 (Guelph) counterparts.  The games were held at Resurrection CSS in Kitchener.

D8 Sr. All-Stars
Both were competitive games, with the junior D8 team taking the opener 86-74 before the seniors came back from a double-digit halftime deficit to win 77-67.

On the junior side, D8's game MVP Zubair Seyed netted 12 of his 16 points in the second half, while St. Mary's Adham Eleeda also did the majority of his damage in the second stanza, nettting 10 of his 15 points as the D8 squad gradually took charge of a game that was tied at halftime.

Alex Durigon (St. James) had a game-high 23 points for the D10, while Shan Lekhi (ODSS) was also in double-figures with 11.

Also hitting the balanced scoresheet for D8 aside from Seyed and Eleeda were Barnaba Niel (10), Mason Cumming (9), Minas Abara (9), Muyang Iluya (8), Alex Douglas (8), Ali Rashid (6), and Justin Malnerich (5).

For D10, other scorers included Nick Marquis (8), Julian Ranzetti (8), Keegan Feeney (7), Mengis Hiyabu (6), Nate Scott (3), Curtis Gordon (3), James Gerstenkorn (2), Kyle Tuohy (2), and Kyle Kush (2).

Mengis Hiyabu (JF Ross) was named D10's player of the game.

Senior
On the senior side, the all-star game could certainly be categorized as a "game of runs".

D8 jumped out to a 19-13 lead at the end of one, only to see a couple of big D10 runs in the second quarter (12-3 run, then another 13-4 run to end the quarter) as the Guelph area stars took a 38-26 halftime lead in a relatively low-scoring affair.

D8, though, found their offensive mojo in the third quarter, equalling their first-half output with a 26-point frame, and then used the strength of a 13-4 fourth quarter run to extend to a 74-61 lead late before things ended with the D8 ahead 77-67.

Rez's Patric McGlynn (three 3's), SMHS' trio of Tesloth Simon (two 3's), Tyrick Thompson (10 of 14 points in the second half) and Nathan Riley (2 dunks) were all instrumental in the second half comeback.

McGlynn had four three-pointers in all en-route to 16 points and D8's game MVP nod.  Tesloth Simon, the league MVP, had five three-pointers and an 18-point effort, while also hitting the scoresheet for the D8 were Tyrick Thompson (14), Nathan Riley (10), Avery Sutton (9), Ryan Stafford (3), Jermaine Lyle (3), Tyler Hergott (2), and Sohrob Sultani (2).

D10's scoresheet was led by Tommy Yanchus (12), James Scott (8), Andrew Folkerson (8), Owen Brombal (7), Joey Hasson (7), Kevin Roche (5), Smith (5), Adam MacEachern (4), Jonah Hopkins (4), Craig Valeriote (3), Mitch Marquis (2), and Jesse Kendall (2).

Folkerson was named as the D10's game MVP.

D8: All-Stars Announced

By:  Michael Grobe (Retrieved from D8 Website)

WATERLOO REGION (March 24, 2014) – St. Mary’s Tesloth Simon collected his second consecutive District 8 MVP award as the league announced its senior and junior boys basketball all-star teams on Monday.

Simon led St. Mary’s to their third straight appearance in OFSAA and an impressive perfect 11-0 record in District 8 play. He was one of the league’s top scorers all-season long registering a season high 23 points in a 65-34 win over the St. David’s Celtics back on December 2nd. Similar to last season, he would play a key role throughout the Eagles push towards D8 and CWOSSA titles and an OFSAA appearance.

Altogether, District 8 champion St. Mary’s scored five players on the all-star squad with Simon being joined by Tyrick Thompson and Jermaine Lyle on the first team squad while Tyler Hergott and Avery Sutton garnered second team honours. For Simon, Thompson, Lyle, and Hergott it marked the second time in their career that they have appeared on the senior all-star squad having all been named last season as well.

Resurrection’s Patric McGlynn also earned his second senior All-Star selection being named to the first team while Phoenix teammate Adam Schneider earned a second team mention. Resurrection finished as runners up to St. Mary’s with their only defeats coming at the hands of the Eagles.

Monsignor Doyle placed Jamal Bell on the first team and Ryan Statfford on the second team while St. David’s Alex Scheffler was the lone Celtic named to the second team. Both Stafford and Scheffler were the only grade 11’s named to the squad.

On the junior side of the ball, St. Mary’s and St. Benedict’s put two athletes each on the first squad with Adham Eleeda and Barnaba Niel representing the D8 champion Eagles. Alex Douglas and Zubair Zeyed were the representatives from the Saints on the first team while Resurrection’s Ali Rashid rounded out the first team.
Second team junior all-stars included Resurrection’s Joseph Hunter, Muyang Iluya, along with Mina Abara (St. Mary’s), Mason Cumming (St. David) and Justin Malnerich (St. Benedict’s).

The entire District 8 all-star team will be in action to showcase their skills this Wednesday at the annual Basketball All-Star game between District 8 and District 10 (Guelph). The event goes March 26th at Resurrection CSS. Junior tipoff is scheduled for 6:00pm while the senior game goes at 8:00pm. Admission to the event is free.

CWOSSA News: St. Mary's Tesloth Simon Verbally Commits to UMass-Lowell

Tesloth Simon, a 6'3" guard from St. Mary's HS in Kitchener, has recently announced a verbal commitment to the University of Massachusetts-Lowell Riverhawks, an NCAA D1 school participating in the America East conference.

Simon has been the scoring backbone for a very strong Eagles' nucleus over the past few seasons; he's also appeared in the CWOSSA AAAA finals (with three straight senior victories) each year that he's been in high school.  He was the D8 MVP last season, and I'd certainly expect him to make that a "back to back" effort this year.

He impressed at the recent OFSAA "AAAA" championships in Mississauga with a couple of eye-raising scoring performances against Father Henry Carr (29 points) and Oakwood (19 points) --- the two teams that would end up playing for the gold medal at the tournament's conclusion.

UMass-Lowell finished their first season as a D1 school this past year, going 8-8 in the America East conference for a 5th place finish in the 9-team conference.  As part of their transition to NCAA Divison I, they are ineligible for postseason play until the 2017-18 season.

There were several schools interested in acquiring his services; I had also heard that Louisiana-Monroe (Sun Belt Conference) demonstrated "significant" interest.

Congratulations, Tesloth!

CWOSSA's OFSAA Consolation Champions

Again, as I catch up on a few things from when I was away, congrats to the 3 CWOSSA teams that captured consolation championships at the recent OFSAA championships --- Walkerton (A), Bishop Mac (AA), and St. James (AAA).

Bishop Mac's win was perhaps the most impressive of the three given that they were without scoring star Jesse Kendall for the final two games with his high ankle sprain.  Bishop Mac only had 6 members of their usual roster --- four of whom were in grade 10 (Chris Poloniato, Evan Hosker, Jake Chaput and junior call-up Greg MacEachern).

The Celtics topped Korah of SSM (who defeated Kitchener Cameron Heights earlier this year) with their 7-member squad in the consolation final.

We would be remiss not to mention St. Mary's tremendous consolation run to the AAAA consolation final --- as well as the fact that their (close) losses in their first two games were to the two teams that ended up playing for the OFSAA championship!

WCSSAA: 1st and 2nd Team All-Stars Announced

Just prior to the break, WCSSAA officials announced their Senior all-star teams for the 2013-14 season.

First-team selections included Nik Farkic (CHCI), Chuder Teny (GRCI), TJ Lall (Galt), Nedim Hodzic (SJAM), and Stefan Simic (KCI).

Named to the second team were Nick Johnny (WCI), Jason Thompson (CHCI), Simon Petrov (SJAM), David Bajic (GRCI), and Sean Davidson (GPSS).

The above ten individuals will be joined by honourable mention selections (minimum 1 per school) to participate in the annual WCSSAA all-star game, where the Mike Moser MVP Trophy will be handed out to one of the first-team selections.

Curiously absent from first or second team selection was Cameron Heights' leading scorer, Sasha Simic, who was selected in December to a top prospects game put on by NorthPoleHoops.com.

I'm Back!

We'll have to wrap up some of the OFSAA action (congrats to 3 CWOSSA teams on their consolation titles!) that I didn't get to before leaving for my wedding ceremony in Las Vegas.

Aside from the tourist activities, I did get a chance to fit in a couple of basketball games in --- interestingly enough, I was in the same row (unplanned!) as Southwood coach Mike Matura for both the WCC and the Pac12 tournament.

Gonzaga - St. Mary's
Oregon - Oregon State

Other items on the agenda in the near future include a wrap-up of various all-star selections and the like.

OFSAA Day 1 Recap

CWOSSA teams went 1-4 yesterday in opening action across the province at the various OFSAA basketball championships as things went "according to seeding form" on the opening day.

"A" OFSAA
At "A" OFSAA in Timmins, it was a rough go for the #10 seed Walkerton DSS, who got down 25-6 after the opening quarter and couldn't recover in a 82-35 loss to #4 Forster.

JD West had 15 points and Keenan Soers 6 for the Riverhawks.

On the positive side for Walkerton, #13 Crawford Adventist Academy upset #7 North Dundas (66-64), meaning Walkerton will be the "better seed" in their second-round game this morning.

"AA" OFSAA
In Perth, the Bishop Mac Celtics (#12) had a tough enough go of it against the #1 seed, Merivale from Ottawa --- but also lost leading scorer Jesse Kendall to an ankle injury in the second quarter (he did not return to action).

Owen Brombal scored 11 points in Bishop Mac's 72-40 loss, meaning the Celts will take on #6 Vaughan Road in 2nd round action today.

"AAA" OFSAA
Over in Welland, the St. James Lions (#8) dominated their first-round game against #14 Anderson CVI of Whitby, opening up a 33-13 halftime lead before cruising to a 57-29 win.

Zach McClenaghan, Ryan Morales, and Mitch Marquis paced the balanced Lion attack with 9 points each.

St. James will play #9 Senator O'Connor this morning in second round action.

"AAAA" OFSAA
A couple of valiant efforts by our CWOSSA reps in Mississauga, but both fell short of victory on Monday.

Cameron Heights (#13), trailed #7 Pine Ridge 41-39 at halftime but fell in a 71-60 final.  Sasha Simic (23) and Afraz Khan (11) led the way for the Gaels, who will take on #4 Eastern Commerce in "round of 16" play today.

Meanwhile, Kitchener St. Mary's (#11) gave #2 Henry Carr all they could handle, being within single digits most of the way before falling 78-68.

Tesloth Simon had 29 points, and according to Elias Sbiet of NorthPoleHoops.com, "(his) stunning performance in a loss to Father Henry Carr earned him high interest which will likely turn to offers after this tournament, from three NCAA programs who came to learn about him."

St. Mary's will play #5 Oakwood in their round of 16 game this morning, in what is a rematch of this past season's Heinbuch Final --- won by Oakwood, 69-57.

Ontario JBC - Post to Follow

Not much time today, but I can tell you that three CWOSSA teams performed admirably at the inaugural "Ontario Junior Basketball Championships" held in Unionville over the weekend.

The three squads --- St. Mary's, Resurrection, and SJAM --- combined to go 7-4 overall, with Resurrection capturing the consolation championship and St. Mary's advancing to the "Elite 8".

Interestingly enough, one player from each team was named as a second team all-star at the 24-team event:  Adham Eleeda (St. Mary's), Simon Petrov (SJAM), and Korbil Gany (Resurrection).
