D8 Monday: Phoenix Survive Scare At Home
The vaunted "tournament hangover" almost claimed another victim on Monday.Fresh off a solid weekend at the Jacob Hespeler tournament, handily taking the title over a field that included Monday's opponent, St. Benedict, the Resurrection Phoenix entered action yesterday as solid favourites.
However, a sub-par offensive performance meant that the Phoenix had to rely on their defense in staving off the St. Benedict Saints, 34-30.
In fact, Rez needed a good game from G/F Britney Haughton, who came through with 11 points to help the Phoenix pull the victory. Jama Bin-Edward added 7, while Afifa Salaad led the Saints and all scorers with 15 points. Laura Ivits (13) counted for most of the rest of the SBCSS offense.
There were 3 other games yesterday, as well.
Monsignor Doyle's Yassy Smith scored 17 points to help the 'Stangs improve to 3-1 with a 32-30 win over Woodland. Julia Deweerd notched 10 for the Cavs in the loss.
St. David dispatched PRDG by a 34-6 count. Scoring details were not immediately available from source.
Lastly, St. Mary's handled Rockway 39-19 with a trio of Eagles scoring 8 points each (Gulic/Fisher/Stoyakovich). Jamie Torrence Perks had 6 for RMC.

St. David slid past Woodland, 28-22 at home, with Naomi Cruz scoring 7 for the Celts. Sydney VanderHoef had a game-high 15 for WCHS.
Rez toppled Rockway 43-13, with a very balanced Phoenix scoresheet on Monday. Quinn Russell (5) and Chelsea Weiler (4) were among the notable Resurrection performers, while Kat Dyck Steinman scored 6 for RMC.
St. Mary's was a 33-25 winner at home over St. Benedict, led by a big 20-point effort from Sunday Okot. Nana Afia had 6 for SBCSS.

Interesting game here, and you have to wonder if Rez might be suffering from the dreaded "tournament hangover" after taking home the title at JHSS this past weekend. I like them to win, but if they're not fully focused on the Saints, this could be a close one.

My Pick: SMHS by 23
The Eagles should be able to pick up their third win today at the expense of the Rockway Flames.
Senior Girls: Lady Irish Invitational (Welland)
Three CWOSSA teams participated at the Lady Irish Invitational this past weekend, hosted by Notre Dame CSS in Welland.Another pool play event, this tournament saw teams play two pool games, with pool winners advancing to the championship semifinals and 2nd place finishers moving on to the consolation semifinals.
Two Waterloo schools, WCI and Bluevale, both went 1-1 and advanced to the consolation semis.
WCI defeated Applewood Heights (Mississauga), 54-27, and lost to the host school, Welland Notre Dame (53-42).
Bluevale topped St. Thomas Aquinas (40-18) and dropped their other pool game to Ancaster (29-28).
JF Ross was in a very competitive pool with St. Anne's (Windsor) and Waterdown, losing both games.
In the consolation semis, both CWOSSA teams were eliminated, with WCI losing to Waterdown (61-31) and St. Francis (St. Catharines) topping Bluevale in a close game.

This year's edition was no exception, and the St. John's Green Eagles of Brantford certainly impressed en route to their silver medal finish.
The event was set up as pool play event, with the top team in each pool advancing to the championship semifinals.
St. John's went 3-0 in their pool, defeating Hamilton Bishop Ryan (61-21) before winning against two of the top teams in the GTA, Brampton Campion (66-36) and Toronto Oakwood (54-39).
This advanced SJC to the semifinals, where they were again impressive in dispatching Hamilton St. Thomas More, 51-29.
The championship final against hosts Hamilton St. Mary's (who have won OFSAA the last five years at either the AAA or AAAA level) was a rematch of last year's AAA OFSAA final, won by St. Mary's 57-40. This time around, St. Mary's was a narrow 56-53 winner over the Green Eagles.
Given that St. Mary's returned all their starters from a year ago, St. John's has to feel pretty good about their performance against the top-ranked team in the province.
The Green Eagles also placed two members on the tournament all-star team --- Kendra Van Leeuwen and Kaitlyn Overeem.
Jacob Hespeler Junior Tourney: Drewry Helps Celtics In Final
When the draw was released, many were expecting that the Resurrection Phoenix (CWOSSA #4) and Bishop Mac Celtics (CWOSSA #2) might meet in the tournament final this past weekend at Jacob Hespeler in Cambridge.In the end, the Celtics lived up to their ranking by pulling away in the second half and defeating the Phoenix, 38-25.
It was a low-scoring first half, with Rez taking a 10-9 lead after one before Bishop Mac outscored the Phoenix 6-0 in the second quarter to lead 15-10 at the break.
Both teams found more offensive footing in the second half, but it was an impressive display by Bishop Mac's Grace Drewry, a D10 all-star from a season ago, that helped the Celtics surge ahead.
Drewry showed off an impressive arsenal including scoring off of post-ups, inside finishes, and outside shooting that bumped the BMAC lead to double digits, where they would not look back.
Sydney Guker-Wickie was Rez's top performer, finishing on a couple of "and-ones" and knocking home a couple of threes in the loss.
Interestingly enough, Rez almost didn't make it out of the tournament's first round, playing another CWOSSA top-10 team in Waterloo-Oxford. The Phoenix, who were without two starters on Friday, trailed in the final minute before Guker-Wickie hit the game-winning three-pointer with time ticking down.
Bishop Mac soundly defeated WCSSAA schools Jacob Hespeler and Cameron Heights to advance to the final, while Rez's other win came against Guelph Centennial.

For the third consecutive season, those 3rd year players took home the title in Cambridge; this was their first senior foray after winning at the junior level the past two seasons.
In the tournament final, Rez played a familiar foe in Waterloo's SJAM; the bulk of their respective rosters faced off last year in the CWOSSA "AAAA" junior final, won by the Phoenix.
Rez raced to a 30-13 halftime lead in the final, thanks in part to Vasquez's hot start. She hit for 18 first-half points, including four three-pointers, and would add another couple of threes in the second half to complete her tally at 24.
SJAM would start the second half on a 9-3 run to cut the lead down to 33-22, but that was as close as they would get as Resurrection would hold on for the 44-30 victory.
Alongside Vasquez's big effort, Jama Bin-Edward had 9 and Maddy Antwi 8 for Rez. Patricia Enrique (2) and Britney Haughton (1) rounded out the scoring.
Grade 10 forward Kate Moran was SJAM's top scorer, putting home 14 points. Milica Koprivica added 11, and Joanna Bamberger scored the 'Landers other 6 points.
En route to the finals, Resurrection had defeated Cambridge schools Galt and Jacob Hespeler, while SJAM was victorious over KCI and Cameron Heights.

CWOSSA Senior "Top 10" Rankings: Initial Release
Well, it's no surprise who is at the top of the list, but I'm definitely intrigued as to how the rest of the season plays out as far as the remainder of the top 10 teams are concerned.Sure, Grand River is my #2 team based upon their early season performance, but with them slated to lose Nyamuoch Teny in October, it would appear as though things in CWOSSA are a bit more wide-open than many would have expected entering the season.
Here's the initial rankings release:
1. St. John's College / Brantford
No surprise here. Between dominant performances both in league and tournament play, the Green Eagles are a legitimate provincial medal threat.
2. Grand River CI / Kitchener
Having defeated several good WCSSAA teams, and the D10's top club (JF Ross) in tournament play, the Rens are more than deserving of the #2 spot in the initial rankings.
3. JF Ross / Guelph
With a three-point loss to Grand River, another tournament silver, and an undefeated start in D10 play (including wins over GCVI, Bishop Mac and a blowout yesterday over Centennial), the Royals have certainly put the rest of CWOSSA on notice as to their abilities.
4. Resurrection CSS / Kitchener
Winners of the Centennial tournament, and undefeated (albeit untested) so far in D8 play, the youthful Phoenix are tough to seed at this point of the season. That said, they have strength on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball and are going to be a tough out this year for many.
5. Sir John A. MacDonald / Waterloo
With returning veteran Milica Koprivica and a strong core of players moving up from last year's junior champion and CWOSSA silver medalist club, the 'Landers have shown early on that they have the offensive firepower to compete with essentially any team in CWOSSA.
6. Cameron Heights CI / Kitchener
Off to an undefeated start in league play, the Gaels look like a team that will go as far as their core players -- especially Nina Farkic -- will lead them.
7. North Park CVI / Brantford
The Trojans are sitting second in a competitive D5 league, having posted (slim) victories over ACS & BCI.
8. Assumption College / Brantford
Having picked up several wins in the Brantford Tip-Off, and making a finals appearance against St. John's, the Lions are definitely in play for D5's second CWOSSA berth.
9. Bishop Macdonell CSS / Guelph
A bit of an up-and-down start to the season for Bishop Mac, but they pulled off a big home win yesterday against GCVI to get themselves into the initial ranking.
10. Guelph CVI / Guelph
With several scoring options, the Gaels are not going to be an easy out in D10 play -- or CWOSSA should they pick up one of the league's spots.

CWOSSA Junior "Top 10" Rankings: Initial Release
Here's the initial installment of the CWOSSA Junior rankings. Expect some shuffling over the next week or so as more games are played:1. Brantford CI / Brantford
No surprise here - the Mustangs are the top team in the region and arguably one of the better teams in the province. Their only blemish was in Sarnia against Chatham-Kent (a team that rolled through the ECI tournament last weekend) despite only 6 available players, I'm told.
T2. Bishop Macdonell CSS / Guelph
Both the Celtics and the other Guelph school that they are tied with, Lourdes, have had very strong starts to their season. I'll leave them tied for now but that will shortly be figured out as these two clubs will meet next week in league play.
T2. Our Lady of Lourdes CSS / Guelph
The Crusaders have done it with defense to this point in the D10 league -- they've allowed just 55 points through their first 4 games.
4. Resurrection CSS / Kitchener
The Phoenix -- who probably won't be tested much in D8 this year -- had a strong showing at the ECI tournament, finishing 2nd despite starting PG Sydney Guker-Wickie missing a bit of time due to injury. They posted victories over KCI, SJAM and SJC last weekend before losing to Chatham-Kent in the final.
5. Kitchener CI / Kitchener
You could probably put a couple of teams here, but a strong start to the Raider season (winning at Grand River) as well as defeating the SJAM Highlanders at the ECI tourney have KCI sitting at #5 to start the season.
6. Waterloo-Oxford DSS / Baden
Returning the majority of their team from last year's WCSSAA/CWOSSA finalist roster, the Crusaders are quietly off to a strong start. Next week's game against Elmira will be their first big test.
7. Centennial CVI / Guelph
We'll find out a bit more about the Spartans this weekend at the JHSS tournament, but their early resume still has them worthy of a top 10 placing.
8. Sir John A. MacDonald / Waterloo
The 'Landers picked up a big win yesterday at Galt, and have looked impressive in league play to this point, with all three of their victories coming by 25+ points.
9. St. John's College / Brantford
Although they were in the weaker of two pools at the ECI tournament last weekend, the Eagles went undefeated and hung with Resurrection in the tournament semifinal, ensuring their top-ten ranking in the initial release.
T10. Elmira DSS / Elmira
Having been among the top handful of teams in the WCSSAA league last year, Natalie Mayer and the Lancers are off to another strong start, winning their first three league games.
T10. North Park CVI / Brantford
NPC performed well yesterday in defeat to top-ranked Brantford CI, so I can definitely see them climbing up this list as the season moves on.

Although Brantford Collegiate Institute is off to an 0-2
start in Brant County high school senior girls basketball action, the Mustangs
aren't pushing the panic button.
That's because, with the amount of talent and experience on
its roster, BCI has lots of time to rebound. The team lost to St. John's
College in the final last season and has welcomed several graduates from last
year's junior championship team.
"We generally progress as the season goes on,"
said coach Ron Jamula. "We're usually better in October."
"Probably Assumption and North Park are in the same
boat but we tend to try to peak for the playoffs."
The reason Jamula mentions Assumption College and North Park
Collegiate in the same breath is because they likely will be the Mustangs'
competition for Brant County's second berth at the Central Western Ontario
Secondary Schools Association AAA championships.
"The league is basically St. John's, which is a top
team in the province, and then there's North Park, ourselves and Assumption who
are really fighting for the second CWOSSA berth," Jamula said.
"Really it's a three-way battle for that second spot.
"You don't want to be fourth. If you're fourth, you
play the semifinal against St. John's and the chances of beating them are very,
very slim."
No one is conceding the league to St. John's but the Green
Eagles are a provincial gold medal threat after winning silver a year ago.
The Eagles proved how good they are by scoring a 71-21 win
against the Mustangs in the season's first game. BCI was then edged 38-37 by
Assumption on Tuesday.
"We had opportunities to win," said Jamula of the
Assumption game.
The coach noted that, with his team at 0-2, Thursday's
contest against North Park "becomes pretty critical."
The coaching staff has faith in its team because of the
talent and experience of the players and the strength its leaders.
"We're getting leadership from our fifth-year
players," said Jamula.
"Summer (Sakaluk) and Victoria (Waud), and we're moving
in a couple of Grade 11s and a couple of Grade 12s.
"We're still finding our way in terms of how we play,
what's the best style we play, whose responsibility is what.
"We all have to find our role within the team concept.
We're still getting to that point, I think."
Along with Sakaluk and Waud, BCI has started Grade 12 player
Madison McBride and Grade 11 Kennedy Pierce, while mixing in Grade 12s Kiana
Madia and Katie Cummings and Grade 11 Lacey Madia as the team's fifth starter.
The Mustangs also receive strong bench support from Grade 12
Hannah Varey and Grade 11s Lauren McManus, Kendra McConkey and Caitlin
Vandertuin.
"With any group, your leaders have to be the ones who
really push and I think we're headed in the right direction with Summer and
Victoria," said Jamula.
"The kids really drive the level of commitment, they
drive the compete level. The coaches are always there to help them (but) it's
up to our captains really to be the leaders and I think they're doing a good
job of that."
Three years ago, BCI decided to build a basketball program
by practising the junior and senior players together. The hope is that a future
senior team can put nine or 10 strong basketball players on the court.
With a strong junior program - BCI is the defending county
champions and looks like a No. 1 CWOSSA seed this season - a provincial
championship is the end goal for the senior team. But, for this season, it's
one step at a time.
"Our goal this year is the same as every other year to
this point, and that is to get to the second-place position, get to CWOSSA and
see what we can do," Jamula said.
WCSSAA Senior: Farkic, Zubic guide Gaels to 3rd Straight Win
Some hot shooting in the fourth quarter -- much of it from Nina Farkic (23 points) and Joanna Zubic (14 points) -- helped the Cameron Heights Gaels extend a 1-point lead after three quarters to a 45-33 final score over the visiting WCI Vikings.With the win, Cameron Heights moved to 3-0, while WCI is now 1-1. Danielle Sauve (10) and Victoria Giguere (8) were the top Viking scorers.

The Knights moved back above the .500 mark with a road win at WODSS. Kaela Knowles had 13 for BCI with Kiera Grein adding 6. Emily Glendinning had another solid effort for WO in defeat, pouring in 16 points.

No trouble for the Hawks at home as they handled the Rebels, with Maddy Adams leading JHSS with 13. Danielle Gardiner netted 7 from ECI.

Nancy Michael (15) and Nyamuoch Teny (12) combined for 27 points in the Rens' victory. Katie Krulicki was in double-digits for the Panthers with 10.

Nice win for the Huskies who slipped past the Raiders at home. Cassey Leader (8) was the leader for Huron in this one, while Alia Hazineh had 16 for KCI.

Preston picked up their second straight win, with Alayna Johnson hitting for 6 points. Sona Khalifeh had 5 for FHCI.

WCSSAA Junior: Lancers, Crusaders Continue Winning Ways
There's some good junior basketball being played on the periphery of the WCSSAA boundary.Following the 3rd game date, both Elmira and Waterloo-Oxford are among the four remaining undefeated teams, and both have picked up victories in impressive fashion.
In fact, essentially all of their 6 combined wins have come by double-digits (EDSS defeated CHCI by 9 in their opener).
Yesterday reaffirmed their strong start, as the Lancers toppled Southwood 33-19 and WODSS cruised past Bluevale 54-18.
For the Crusaders, Madalyn Davidson and Madi Sadler had 10 points each in their win, while Avery Webster led Bluevale with 5.
Elmira received 8 from their season leading scorer Natalie Mayer and 10 more from Jaclyn Wideman in their home victory; Maddie Bannon had 4 for the Sabres.

D10: Senior Royals Make Statement; Celtics Pick Up Big Win
The JF Ross Royals have established themselves as the clear favourites in the D10 Senior Girls' basketball league.The Royals had a statement victory last night, posting a big 67-22 victory over the Centennial Spartans. Maddy Darling (17), Mya Leacock (11) and Catie Terrey (11) were all in double-figures for the double blue, while Carter Godman and Lauren Zonneveld had 7 each for CCVI.
The win, coupled with Guelph CVI's 4-point loss to Bishop Macdonell (a team that JF Ross defeated earlier in the season) gives the Royals sole possession of first place in the D10 senior standings.
That game went down as a 37-33 Celtic victory, with Johanna de Jong hitting 12 points for BMAC and Rachel DiGravio adding 6. Abbey MacIntyre (10) and Sydney Wilson (9) led the Gael effort.
The other game on Thursday saw Lourdes handle ODSS by a 54-17 final. Big game by Rainey Psenicka, who poured in 28 points for Lourdes, with Natasha Martinez adding 10. Acacia Smith had 5 for the Bears.

All four home teams posted comfortable victories on Thursday afternoon.
Centennial was a 42-8 winner over JF Ross, with Sabrina Smith (14) and Lauren Thomas (6) providing the top efforts for the Spartans in that one.
Bishop Mac was a 46-12 winner over GCVI, continuing their win streak to start the year. Grace Drewry and Rachel Guanzon had 14 each for the winners.
Lourdes also remained undefeated, posting a 34-16 win at home over Orangeville. Jessica Mathieu led the charge for the Crusaders with 14 points, while Jada Codrington added 11.
St. James received a 20-point effort from Sophia Lago in a 51-19 win over CWDHS. Amanda Gray had 8 for the Falcons.

D8: Wednesday & Thursday Results
There were 5 games over the past couple of days in the D8 Senior circuit, with four teams playing back-to-back days both Wednesday and Thursday.
The tightest game of all of them saw St. Benedict snip past St. David, 47-38. Megan Goar of St. David continued her fantastic start to the season, pouring in 29 points and bringing her league-leading scoring average up to 23.6 PPG, while Julia Mascarenhas (16) and Afifa Salaad (13) both had double-figure efforts for St. Benedict.
Monsignor Doyle took a 32-21 win over PRDG, with Yassy Smith netting 15 points. Angela Mugisha led the Chevaliers with 8.
St. Mary's was a 54-28 winner over Woodland, starting quickly and cruising to victory. Summer Pahl led the Eagles with 15, while Gracie Roorda had 8 for the Cavs.
Resurrection swept a couple of "A" CWOSSA schools in Rockway and Woodland over the past couple of days.
On Wednesday, Megan Fergusson (who has accepted an NCAA D1 hockey scholarship) led the Phoenix with 10 points in a 43-16 win over Rockway.
Last night, it was Krissia Vasquez (14) and Patricia Enrique (8) leading the way in a 50-9 victory over Woodland. Brooke Mulder had 5 for Woodland.

Junior
An interesting scheduling quirk on the junior side of the league, as Woodland and Resurrection played each other Wednesday and Thursday, due to a WCHS field trip.
Wednesday's game went down as a 35-13 Rez victory, with Chloe Bugdale (9) and Buse Bin-Edward (8) leading the charge. Jenna Diumering had 7 for Woodland.
Yesterday, Rez held WCHS to single digits, winning 41-8. Sydney Guker-Wickie had 13 to lead the Phoenix, while Sydney Vanderhoef had 4 to top the Cavalier scoring.
Other results included St. Benedict doubling up on St. Mary's, 25-12 on Wednesday; scoring details were not immediately available from source.
St. David moved to 4-0 and first place on Wednesday by taking care of Rockway 40-8. Emily White had 12 for the Celts to lead all scorers; Michaiah Bender netted 6 for the Flames.
