When the draw was released, many were expecting that the Resurrection Phoenix (CWOSSA #4) and Bishop Mac Celtics (CWOSSA #2) might meet in the tournament final this past weekend at Jacob Hespeler in Cambridge.In the end, the Celtics lived up to their ranking by pulling away in the second half and defeating the Phoenix, 38-25.
It was a low-scoring first half, with Rez taking a 10-9 lead after one before Bishop Mac outscored the Phoenix 6-0 in the second quarter to lead 15-10 at the break.
Both teams found more offensive footing in the second half, but it was an impressive display by Bishop Mac's Grace Drewry, a D10 all-star from a season ago, that helped the Celtics surge ahead.
Drewry showed off an impressive arsenal including scoring off of post-ups, inside finishes, and outside shooting that bumped the BMAC lead to double digits, where they would not look back.
Sydney Guker-Wickie was Rez's top performer, finishing on a couple of "and-ones" and knocking home a couple of threes in the loss.
Interestingly enough, Rez almost didn't make it out of the tournament's first round, playing another CWOSSA top-10 team in Waterloo-Oxford. The Phoenix, who were without two starters on Friday, trailed in the final minute before Guker-Wickie hit the game-winning three-pointer with time ticking down.
Bishop Mac soundly defeated WCSSAA schools Jacob Hespeler and Cameron Heights to advance to the final, while Rez's other win came against Guelph Centennial.
