#CWOSSARoadTrip: Elmira

EDSS vs. WODSS Last Week
Note:  This is the first stop of my "CWOSSA Road Trip", a venture that will take me to every CWOSSA school at some point during the upcoming school year.  For a bit more about this and other projects I'm adding to the website this year, you can check out my funding campaign's page.  You can also click the "CWOSSA Road Trip" link at the top of the page to keep tabs on previous schools attended.
-------------

I "tipped off" the "CWOSSA Road Trip" last week, and I settled on a first visit to a school that is more or less smack dab in the middle of the CWOSSA region -- Elmira.

Facts and Figures
Full School Name:  Elmira District Secondary School
Mascot:  Lancers
School Opened:  December, 1938

CWOSSA Classification:  AAA

League:  WCSSAA

Past CWOSSA Basketball Championships:  None

Top High School Rival:  Waterloo-Oxford ("Battle of the Barns")

Favourite School Features
Can I say the students?  They were in full effect on the day I attended, given that it was the annual "Battle of the Barns" events.  As I mentioned in my post from last Friday (link below), students were heading between the school (indoor sports) and the football field, many being decked out in the Lancer shades of Green and Grey.

Also, as I had my 9-month old son in attendance, several students went out of their way to help me -- be it by opening doors for a dad with a stroller, asking if I needed help getting to the gym, or the like.  So, props to those students for their willingness to assist a total stranger.

As for "physical" features, the age of the school itself -- they recently celebrated their 75th anniversary in 2014 -- lends itself to some older architectural features (arched entrance ways, etc.).

In terms of somewhat recent additions, the former Elmira (Horse) Race Track was located a stone's throw from the school.  Upon its closing in 2003, the properties were eventually sold to the Township of Woolwich and the Waterloo Region School Board.  As such, the Woolwich Memorial Recreation Centre and Elmira's football field (with a nice scoreboard, I must say) sit on the former racetrack lands.

The Game Attended
You can check out my full recap of the Waterloo-Oxford vs. Elmira Senior Girls' game in my previous post here.

Next School Up
Monsignor Doyle - Cambridge (October 14th).
