WCSSAA: Season Opening Picks

After watching some of the other leagues get under way, the Senior Girls' WCSSAA league is set to get themselves started this evening with a full slate of 7 games.  As it's a 15-team league (no Glenview Park), Grand River will get the opening day "bye" today.

Huron Heights at Bluevale
My Pick:  BCI
Things will be a lot different at Bluevale this year, with their strong backcourt of Sarah Hamm and Natalie Bishop having graduated.  Kailee Sawyer will take part in Cross Country this year as her fall sport, so it definitely appears to be a bit more of an uphill climb for the Knights this year, who are now competing at the CWOSSA "AAA" level.  That said, I still look for them to pull out a win at home here.

Cameron Heights at Galt
My Pick:  CHCI
With some strong early season performances, the Cameron Heights Golden Gaels look like a team that should be in the running for a WCSSAA championship (and a CWOSSA "AAAA" berth).  Strong guard play from Nina Farkic and a post presence in Hunter Johns should propel them to an opening victory today down in Cambridge.

Eastwood at Elmira
My Pick:  EDSS
In reviewing the early season schedule, this one looked the most like a "coin flip" among today's games.  Both teams finished with similar records in both the junior and senior circuits last year --- I'll go with the home Lancers to prevail here.

Forest Heights at Jacob Hespeler
My Pick:  JHSS
The Hawks, who were WCSSAA runners-up last year, have as good a shot of anyone of getting back to the title game, provided they can stay healthy (which has been their nemesis over the past few seasons).  Their front-line duo of Courtney (currently rehabbing a knee injury though) & Candice Wright (Vermont commits) will be aided by some talent coming up from last year's CWOSSA "AAA" silver medalists, including Kendra Dennis and Taylor Finamore.  JHSS to win here.

SJAM at Preston
My Pick:  SJAM
Two clubs that both finished on the outside looking in last year with 2-10 league records, one of them will have the opportunity to get their season off on the right foot here.  SJAM showed an improved ability to score the ball at last weekend's ECI tournament, so I'll go with them in this matchup.

KCI at WCI
My Pick:  WCI
Well, I have to put myself out there, and it's certainly tough here given that I expect both of these teams to be in the upper echelon of the WCSSAA league.  KCI has a plethora of talent coming up from the junior ranks, and I won't be surprised regardless of how this one plays out.  Tough to pick against WCI at home, so I'll go with a big performance from WCI star Kaylee Anagnostopoulos and a Viking win.

WODSS at SSS
My Pick:  SSS
It's certainly a different year this year out in Baden, as the majority of last year's WCSSAA championship team has departed, including league MVP Maddy Horst (Western U).  In fact, Tess Pettigrew is the lone remaining starter for the Crusaders.  There could be some early-season growing pains while they get adjusted to their new rotation, so I'll go with the home Sabres who return a couple of talented scorers in Taylor White and Brianne Jewell. 

D8: Wednesday Results

The "big game" between the St. David Celtics and St. Benedict Saints, two teams that are certainly in the running for this year's D8 championship, certainly lived up to the billing as the Saints held off the visitors 32-29 to move to 2-0 on the campaign.

Kayla Leusink netted 13 while Afifa Salaad chipped in 11 for St. Benedict's scoresheet, while Megan Goar was the top scorer for St. David with 13.

In other action, the Monsignor Doyle Mustangs made a triumphant return to D8 Senior play with a big 43-12 win over the Rockway Flames.  Scoring details were not immediately available from source.

Also on Wednesday, the Woodland Cavaliers picked up their first win of the 2014 season, doubling up the St. Mary's Eagles by a 34-17 count.

Junior
There were two junior games to discuss on Wednesday (Monsignor Doyle is a "senior only" program this season) --- in the first affair, St. Benedict moved to 2-0 with a 28-23 win over St. David.  Maya Danis again led the Saints, scoring 14 points, while Tereza Borges added 8.  Kathryn McQuillan had 9 for the Celtics.

St. Mary's is also 2-0 after a 46-12 win over Woodland Christian.  Summer Pahl scored 16 points in the win for the Eagles, while Gabby Adam led the Cavaliers (0-2) with 7.

Former WODSS Star Yantzi Inducted to University of Vermont Hall of Fame

Former Waterloo-Oxford ('00) and KW Lightning star Aaron Yantzi (now Dickie) was inducted into the University of Vermont Athletic Hall of Fame this past weekend.

From the release posted on Vermont's website:

Yantzi was a three-time America East All-Conference selection, including a First Team honor as a senior. She finished her illustrious career with 1,592 points, fifth at the time and currently seventh in program history. Yantzi also ranks second in program history with a 56.7 field goal percentage and holds four of the top-10 single-season field goal percentage marks. She connected on 80.7 percent of her free throws (currently third all-time) and graduated as the sixth-best rebounder at UVM with 715 boards (currently seventh all-time).

Yantzi is one of three UVM players to average double-figure rebounds in a single season, and one of only five players with at least 1,000 career points and over 700 rebounds. She helped guide Vermont to the 2002 America East Regular Season Title and a berth in the Women's National Invitational Tournament Quarterfinals as a sophomore.

D8 Picks: Wednesday

YTD:  3-0 (1.000)

Only 2 games on the D8 schedule today, but one of them is certainly a big early-season match-up between two teams projected to be up near the top of the final standings.  Here's a look:

St. David (1-0) at St. Benedict (1-0)
My Pick:  SBCSS
This could certainly be a preview of this year's D8 finals, although it is far from a two-horse race in the league this season.  Regardless of that fact, I think the St. Benedict Saints are a bit ahead of St. David at this juncture of the season, so I'll go with them to take the win at home.

Monsignor Doyle (0-0) at Rockway (0-1)
My Pick:  RMC
Hard to know which way to go on this one, with Monsignor Doyle making their return to the D8 league after a year's hiatus.  I'm going to go with the Flames in a close one.

Guelph Mercury: Bishop Mac Celtics Use Team Play For Win In Hoops Opener

GUELPH – The Bishop Macdonell Celtics are going to have to spread the wealth around if they're to repeat as District 10 high school senior girls' basketball champions this season. 

"This is the first year where we haven't had somebody where we lean on them to do everything," Bishop Mac coach Karen Bremner said. "It's a little more, in essence, a team where we're scoring by committee, we're bringing the ball up by committee and we're defending by committee, which in some senses is a healthier thing. It's just something that we haven't had to deal with and we're trying to figure out what our identity is at this point." 

"Our team values have not changed at all," Celtics' returnee Rachael DiGravio said. "Pretty much nothing has changed except that all of us have a bigger role on the team. All of us know when to take responsibility, but our team dynamic, nothing has changed. We still have the same values as we did last year. We still have the team concept." 

The Celtics opened their regular season Tuesday with a 50-27 victory over the host Lourdes Crusaders, the visitors pulling away in the fourth quarter by adding 12 points to the gap. 

Bishop Mac had 10 players suited up for the game and nine of them scored, but nobody hit double digits and that's likely to be the case all season long. 

Cindy Seke led with eight points while Ellie Young had seven and Christine Sullivan, Tianna Sullivan, Dianne Priamo and Marcela Gadzinska netted six apiece. 

Rainey Psenicka topped the scoring list for Lourdes with nine points while Brin Krueger and Katarina Moran added four each. 

This year's version of the Celtics is also lacking the tall players that they've had the past four or five seasons. 

"I'd say we're a more athletic team than we have been in the past," Bremner said. "I don't know if we're faster, but you can do a lot of stuff with athletes and that's what we plan on doing." 

"We have a couple tall girls, but most of us are short," DiGravio said. "All of us just know we just have to use our bodies more to box out and because we don't have those tall girls, it just means we have to be a little more physical to get those rebounds." 

Tuesday's game was the first of the season for the Celtics as they opted not to play any pre-season matches. 

"A lot of teams have gone to early bird tournaments and they've gotten a sense of what their teams are capable of," Bremner said. 

"We decided that we were just going to take last week and the week before that to practice and go through offensive sets and things like that and just kind of work through the bumps as they came."

D10 Tuesday: All Doubleheaders End Up As Sweeps To Tip Off Season

All games on Tuesday afternoon in the D10 league ended up with the same team winning both ends of their respective junior-senior doubleheader.  Let's start off with senior action:

Senior
Centennial 52, JF Ross 29
The Spartans staked their claim as the big favourite to capture the D10's "AAAA" CWOSSA (play-in) berth with a big home win over JF Ross.  Hannah Newman (17), Carter Godman (12) and Emma Cain (11) were all in double figures for the Spartans; Ali Darling led the way for the Royals with 10.

Bishop Mac 50, Lourdes 27
Despite losing several key players from last year's roster, the Celtics still seem like they have the upper hand among these two "AA" schools.  Cindy Seke (8) and Ellie Young (7) paced a balanced BMAC attack, while Rainey Psenicka had a game-high 9 for Lourdes with Brin Krueger and Kat Moran adding 4 each.

St. James 47, Orangeville 16
Big win on opening day for the Lions, who received 18 from Melyssa Aramini and 10 from Emily Andres.  Hannah Bellai did most of the damage for Orangeville, with 13 of their 16 points.

Guelph CVI 65, CWDHS 24
Big offensive output from the GCVI Gaels on Tuesday, with key performances by Abbey MacIntyre (16), Cally Strongman (12) and Jenna Falconer (10).  Maddie Fennell had 9 for the Falcons.

Junior
St. James 56, Orangeville 14
Kelsey Widdrington, Meghan Santi, and Stephanie Giovinazzo were all in double figures as the Lions were victorious in their season opener.  Paige Burns led the Bears with 4.

Bishop Mac 47, Lourdes 38 (OT)
Good battle here between "AA" schools that actually took overtime to settle.  Leading scorers were not immediately available.

Centennial 42, JF Ross 34
Katie Terrey had a game-high 15 for JF Ross but it wasn't enough as the Spartans prevailed in this one.  Lauren Zonneveld (12) and Paige Heffernan (11) had double-digit efforts for Centennial.

Guelph CVI 50, CWDHS 10
No trouble for the Gaels in this one as they cruised past the Centre Wellington Falcons at home.

Brantford Expositor: Speed Game for Green Eagles

Despite competing in seven straight provincial championships, the St. John's College Green Eagles will be taking nothing for granted when the Brant County high school senior girls basketball season starts Thursday.

"There's a lot of parity among the top teams and that's exciting because that means there's significant games being played every night," said SJC coach Matt Lynch, whose team hosts Assumption College on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

"We just look to be competitive and in the mix."

The eight-time defending Brant County champions began the game portion of their season on the weekend at the Purple and White tournament at Western University in London.

The Green Eagles went 2-1, losing to Windsor's Holy Names in the quarter-finals. SJC also lost to Holy Names at the tournament last year and then went all the way to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations quarter-finals.

Lynch said this year's team has the ability to repeat the success of last year's squad.

"We don't want to be in danger of looking beyond anybody," he said.

"But I think if we play to our potential we do have the opportunity to go to OFSAA."

The Green Eagles lost starters Brianna Bavota and Monica Polgar to graduation.

But the Eagles will get a boost from fifth-year player Megan Thompson back in the post position.
Maddi Cohoon also returns at post and she's joined by point guard Kendra Van Leeuwen, a national level player whose future is bright. Both players are in Grade 11.

Lynch said rounding out the starting five will be Grade 11 player Leah Coon and Grade 12 student Jen Garner.

New to the team is Grade 9 player Alaina McMillan, as well as three juniors from last year's undefeated Central Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association champions. They are Alex Girardi, Lauren deMontmorency and Ashley Derks.

Also on the roster is Sam Dupont, an injured player who will serve as the team's manager.
Lynch, who is being assisted on the bench by Steve Van Leeuwen, said he hopes his team will play a high-tempo game.

"We're hoping to play at a high speed, run the floor and put lots of pressure on defence," he said. "The energy that the girls are bringing to practice every night kind of indicates that that's the way they want to play, too.

"It's been a good two weeks of practice. We've already made huge strides from the first week."

Although a majority of players are in Grade 11 or lower, lack of experience is not issue with the Green Eagles.

"The chemistry seems good," said Lynch.

"Everyone on the team has shown some leadership and stepped up in different situations.

"There's not really a concern about experience or the level of competition because these girls have all played at a high level in high school and club ball."

With such a youthful team, it must be hard to not look at things from a two-year perspective. But Lynch said the Eagles have no trouble focusing on this season.

"We always look to see what's coming in from the junior program," said the coach. "The juniors are usually pretty successful but each year presents its own challenges and its own opportunities so we're really excited about this year.

"Once we get to next year, that's when we'll start worrying about it.

"We're looking forward to this season. There should be lots of great basketball."

D8 Monday Results: Phoenix Hold Off Cavs In Season Opener

It looks like parity might be the name of the game in this year's District 8 Senior Girls' Basketball league.  

One thing is for certain -- there isn't a "clear favourite" as the league tipped off regular season action yesterday.

I mentioned in my post on Monday that I wouldn't be surprised if the Resurrection-Woodland game was "closer than you think", and it certainly fulfilled those expectations as the Phoenix staged a 2nd half rally to overcome a 5-point deficit en route to a 35-32 victory.

Celia McGlynn had 16 for Rez in the victory there, while Patricia McCullough added 7.  Cavs star Julianna Thomson had a game-high 21 for Woodland, with Brooke Mulder adding 6.

The other two games in the senior circuit went as expected.  Bobbi-Sue Hentges notched 11 points as the St. David Celtics defeated St. Mary's, 41-14.  Mallory Gitzell was the high point producer for the Eagles with 6.

St. Benedict took out Rockway 45-12, backed by a 9-point effort from Afifa Salaad.  Jamie Torrance Perks scored 6 for the Flames.

Junior
On the junior side, the Resurrection Phoenix (last year's AAAA silver medalists in junior) return the bulk of their starting rotation from last year's squad and it showed in a 55-4 win over Woodland.  Jama Bin-Edward (13) and Krissia Vasquez (8) led the way for the Phoenix out in Breslau.

Summer Pahl had a 16-point effort for St. Mary's as they handled St. David 38-9 in that contest.  Julia Kukzynska added 8 more for the Eagles.

St. Benedict coasted to a 41-24 win over Rockway, with Maya Dans netting 14 in the win.  Tereza Borges and Makayla Corbral added 8 each for the Saints, while Elhana Dyck, Leah Bauman and Kat Dyck-Steinman all had 6 points each for Rockway.

D8: Monday Picks

Today marks the first day of regular season action in the 7-team D8 senior league, and there's a trio of games on tap.

Here's a quick glance and my picks:

Resurrection (0-0) at Woodland (0-0)
My Pick:  RCSS
I actually expect Woodland, who finished 3-7, to have a good shot at qualifying for the D8 semifinals this season.  We'll see how that goes --- in the meantime, I'll take the defending D8 champ Phoenix to win but wouldn't be surprised if it's closer than you think.

St. David (0-0) at St. Mary's (0-0)
My Pick:  SDCSS
The Eagles will need to keep this one as a low-scoring affair to have a shot at the victory, but I think the Celts will pick up win #1 on the road here.

St. Benedict (0-0) at Rockway (0-0)
My Pick:  SBCSS
The Saints played well this past weekend, going 2-1 at the ECI tournament, and I look for them to grab their first regular-season win here today.
   

Senior Girls: Renegades Win Georgetown DHS Round-Robin

This year's senior squad at Grand River Collegiate got their season off to a strong start, taking home the title of the Georgetown DHS invitational tournament.

The tournament was a 4-team round-robin event, and the Renegades registered a perfect 3-0 record.

On Friday, Grand River defeated Newmarket Sacred Heart (47-29).  They came back on Saturday with wins over Brampton Notre Dame (42-24) and host Georgetown (39-25).

The Rens feature a plethora of talent that has moved up from their strong junior squads of the past couple of seasons, including Maya Day, Nyamuoch Teny, and Tara DeBoer.

Senior Girls: St. John's Looks Strong At Purple & White

The annual "Purple and White" 32-team event hosted by the University of Western Ontario took place this past weekend in London, and the St. John's Green Eagles came away the best result of CWOSSA teams, finishing up as a quarterfinalist (losing to the eventual tournament champions).

The Green Eagles, who barring an upset will enter my top 10 rankings as the #1 team this week, handily defeated Strathroy by a 68-8 score in their opener.  Grade 9 guard Alaina McMillan paced the way for the Green Eagles with 14 points, while Megan Thompson added 13.

In round two, St. John's took out Amherst 49-17, backed by a 22-point performance from Kendra Van Leeuwen and 11 more by Leah Coon.

This set up a quarterfinal match-up against Holy Names (Windsor), where the Green Eagles were within 7 points and 3:00 to go before falling 46-36.  Van Leeuwen netted 16 points in the loss.

Holy Names would go on to the tournament championship, knocking off St. Thomas More (Hamilton) in the championship final.

The Green Eagles are back in action with league play this week, before hosting their annual "tip-off classic" in conjunction with Assumption College this coming weekend.  Participating teams aside from those two will include CWOSSA squads WCI, Bluevale, Galt, and Bishop Macdonell.  Out-of-town entries including Brebeuf (Hamilton) and Wallaceburg DSS.

Senior Girls: Cameron Heights Dominant in Tournament Win

The Cameron Heights Golden Gaels were just that --- golden --- this past weekend at the Senior Girls' Tournament hosted by Eastwood CI in Kitchener.

In fact, the Gaels didn't just win the tournament; they dominated.  They registered an average margin of victory of 28.3 PPG, and their closest games (both the 1st round and championship final) were decided by 27.

The Gaels' dynamic duo of Nina Farkic and Hunter Johns had strong performances, particularly in the championship final against St. Benedict where Farkic nearly registered a triple-double (15 Pts, 9 Reb, 7 Ast) and Johns connected for a double-digit efforts (11 points) while adding 5 rebounds during the Gaels' 52-25 win over Cambridge St. Benedict.

Farkic averaged 14.3 PPG for the tournament.

Senior Girls: Tournaments Set To Go For This Weekend

Well, there's one thing that rings true with regards to the CWOSSA Senior Girls' basketball schedule --- there's no time wasted when it comes to getting things moving!

That's the case this weekend as there's several local tournaments featuring a variety of CWOSSA teams.

The rundown is as follows:

WODSS Early Bird
The defending WCSSAA champions, the Waterloo-Oxford Crusaders, will certainly have a different look this season following the graduation of several of their key players from a season ago, including G Maddy Horst and F Alicia Glendinning.

That said, the constant in Baden will be the hosting of their annual early-season 6-team tournament, which will take place this Friday & Saturday.

Aside from the hosts, participating teams will include Preston (WCSSAA), Woodland Christian (D8), Centennial CVI (Guelph), and non-CWOSSA teams Stratford Central and Huron Park (Woodstock).

The tournament schedule (pool-play) is as follows:

This year's Rebel Shootout is (thus far) an all-WCSSAA & D8 event with one team confirmation pending.

Participating teams from WCSSAA include the host Rebels, Cambridge Southwood, Kitchener Cameron Heights, Waterloo SJAM, and Kitchener Huron Heights.  D8 schools Cambridge St. Benedict and Kitchener St. Mary's (last year's runner-up at this event) round out the field.

First round schedule is as follows on Friday:

Brantford Schools Head to London
The Brantford St. John's Green Eagles and the Assumption Lions are among the teams taking part in a 16-team tournament down the 401 in London this weekend.

Both squads are on the same side of the draw; St. John's will open with a 5:30pm game against Strathroy (at Mother Teresa) while the Lions play the game immediately preceding (4:00pm) against London Pope John Paul II.

Assumption will play either Sainte Andre-Bessette of London (new Catholic high school there) or Holy Names in round two, while the Green Eagles will play Amherst or Waterdown.

Chuder Teny Commits to Wilfrid Laurier University

It's official.

2014 Mike Moser Award winner (WCSSAA MVP) Chuder Teny (Grand River '14) has announced that he will be staying local and attending Wilfrid Laurier University, while suiting up as a member of the Golden Hawks.

It's the second straight year that the Hawks have picked up a blue-chip local recruit, having inked 6'8" Galt graduate Jack Simmons last year.  Simmons averaged double-figure scoring on the year, and was named to the OUA West Rookie All-Star team.
