The "big game" between the St. David Celtics and St. Benedict Saints, two teams that are certainly in the running for this year's D8 championship, certainly lived up to the billing as the Saints held off the visitors 32-29 to move to 2-0 on the campaign.
Kayla Leusink netted 13 while Afifa Salaad chipped in 11 for St. Benedict's scoresheet, while Megan Goar was the top scorer for St. David with 13.
In other action, the Monsignor Doyle Mustangs made a triumphant return to D8 Senior play with a big 43-12 win over the Rockway Flames. Scoring details were not immediately available from source.
Also on Wednesday, the Woodland Cavaliers picked up their first win of the 2014 season, doubling up the St. Mary's Eagles by a 34-17 count.
Junior
There were two junior games to discuss on Wednesday (Monsignor Doyle is a "senior only" program this season) --- in the first affair, St. Benedict moved to 2-0 with a 28-23 win over St. David. Maya Danis again led the Saints, scoring 14 points, while Tereza Borges added 8. Kathryn McQuillan had 9 for the Celtics.
St. Mary's is also 2-0 after a 46-12 win over Woodland Christian. Summer Pahl scored 16 points in the win for the Eagles, while Gabby Adam led the Cavaliers (0-2) with 7.
