Senior Action: CHCI's Simic Drops 47 Points in Tournament Win
It looks like Nem Simic isn't having much difficulty adjusting to senior-level basketball.
The grade eleven guard dropped 47 --- yes, 47 --- points in Cameron Heights' victory today in their home tournament. He lit up five threes in the first quarter alone to get off to a hot start.
Actually, the whole Cameron squad was on fire on Friday, scoring 95 points in that one (95-38 win over St. Thomas Aquinas).
The Gaels would go on to win the tournament over Guelph Centennial. The Spartans defeated Waterloo CI in a semifinal game.

Heinbuch Update: St. Mary's Adds to CWOSSA's Win Total
Isaac Lance, back in action for St. Mary's, led the way with 17 points. Eric McDonald of St. Chris had a game-high 29.
St. Mary's will now play this evening at 7:45pm at home against either J. Clarke Richardson (Ajax) or Governor Simcoe (St. Catharines) --- likely JCR.
Meanwhile, in the noon game at Huron Heights, a shorthanded Bluevale squad fell 64-49 to Scarborough Mother Teresa.
Ian Farquharson led the Knights with 15, while Deshaun Williams had 14 for Mother Teresa.
OFSAA "AAAA": WCI Comes Back to Move Through To Quarters
The Vikes trailed 35-26 after three quarters, but used a 17-6 push in the final frame to come away with the 2 point win. They actually trailed 41-39 with :26 remaining in the game.
WCI advances to quarterfinal play tonight at 6pm, but face a daunting task. Their opponent will be St. Mary's CSS of Hamilton, the #1 seed in the tournament. St. Mary's has defeated Brantford St. John's a couple of times this year.
Still, there's a reason they play the games, so good luck to WCI!

OFSAA AAAA: St. John's One Win Away From Medal
In a game that was tight at halftime, the Green Machine outscored #15 Notre Dame SS of Brampton 43-11 in the second half to take a comfortable 68-32 win.
Kelly Van Leeuwen again led St. John's in scoring, with 19 points. Chenel Johnson had 13 for Notre Dame.
As a result of a first-round upset, the Eagles may have some tough opposition to face in their quarterfinal game. They will play the winner of #4 St. Anne's (Tecumseh) and #7 Bill Crothers (Mississauga) tonight at 7:45pm.
OFSAA Update: Bishop Mac Cruises to Quarters
The girls got off to a bit of a slow start (18-12 BMac after one) but cranked up the defensive intensity the rest of the way as they cruised to a 52-27 win.
Leading scorers for Bishop Mac were Janine DeLeon (11) and Logan Lane (10).
The Celts will play their quarterfinal game tonight at 6:45pm against #6 seed Kingston La Salle. The winner of that game will secure at least a 4th place finish (and an OFSAA medal).

OFSAA Update: Trojans Advance to Quarterfinals
The Trojans raced out to a 42-29 halftime edge, and were still able to maintain a near double-digit spread for most of the second half.
Cassie Fletcher had an outstanding game for North Park, pouring in 31 points. Laura Chapple added 16.
Ashley Chapman led the Rams with 24, while Casea Fuller had 23.
The road now gets tougher for NPC, as they will do battle with London's Regina Mundi College (#3 seed). Regina Mundi blasted Thomas A. Stewart from Peterborough in their second round game by a 70-29 final.

The Record: Waterloo Native Leads Memorial Basketball Team
Being your team’s top scorer in three out of its first four Atlantic University Sport games will get you noticed and nobody is more aware of that than Fishbein.
It’s no big deal as far as the Waterloo native is concerned because she believes it works to Memorial’s advantage.
“If they are hard on me, I can get the ball to Brittany (Dalton) or Ally (Forsey) or Jen (Parsons) in the post,” said Fishbein, who plays the wing. “It’s all about the team effort. We all need to be aggressive and score the ball.”
The Lady Hawks are without Vicki Thistle, their top scorer last season, until after the Christmas break due to an injury. In the meantime, Fishbein has stepped up and become the type of team leader all successful teams possess. Her overall improvement is the product of experience.
“It just comes from playing,” said the Bluevale Collegiate graduate. “I don’t have that nervous, rookie feeling. After a couple of years, you know where you need to be and what you need to do.”
She said her success so far this season had a lot to do to the work she and her teammates did during the summer.
“We all stayed here (in St. John’s) and worked really hard and worked together as a team, and I think that helped improve our chemistry.”
Like all players, there are things she needs to work on. “I think my ball handling has improved, but it can still improve a lot more,” she said with a smile.
There’s lots more to do in all areas of the game.
“There’s a role to fill on the team in terms of leadership, bringing up the ball every now and then and being an all-around better player in terms of contributing points and making sure I’m still getting in there for rebounds and breaking the press … that sort of stuff,” she said.
Fishbein, who also leads Memorial in minutes played with a 33.50 average, worked on gaining confidence going into her second year and that’s carried over into this season.
She did have specific personal goals she wanted to meet, such as hitting the outside shot, something she did pretty well in the pre-season. “I need to get back in the gym and shoot some more now so that it will continue during the season,” she said.
Sea-Hawks coach Doug Partridge isn’t surprised Fishbein is beginning to blossom into an all-around effective player.
“For those who do the work and develop their game, this is about the time they begin to show their skills,” said Partridge. “They have enough reps and enough confidence to begin to demonstrate what they can do.”
He said Fishbein has “all the physical abilities to be a dominant defender. She is working on her focus and attention to detail and rotations.”
Fishbein’s start has been impressive and the home crowd noticed.
When she’s wasn’t scrambling on the floor for a loose ball, she was using her quickness for a couple of steals in each in the season opening games against Cape Breton Capers.
Her hustle was perhaps most obvious late in the second quarter of the second game against the Capers when she missed a three-pointer, but raced untouched to the basket to grab her own rebound and put it in.
He contributions weren’t limited to simple aggressiveness. She scored 22 points with eight rebounds in the first game against Cape Breton and followed that up with a careerhigh 26 points and eight rebounds in the second game of the season.
Heading into last weekend’s bye week, Fishbein was tied for fourth place in conference scoring with a 21 points per-game average. She was leading the conference in three pointers with nine in four games and she was eighth in rebounding with seven per game.
It’s early, but what Fishbein has shown in the first four games is that she is not only getting points and making plays, she’s doing those things at key points in the game.
She’s become an impact player, striding up and down the court with purpose — a player who makes plays that changes momentum in a game or scores when the outcome is still on the line.

Heinbuch: Resurrection 55, Toronto Northern 45
After three straight single digit losses by CWOSSA teams on Thursday, the Resurrection Phoenix were able to get CWOSSA in the win column with a 55-45 victory over the Toronto Northern Red Knights.
This one started off slowly (an understatement). Over the first four minutes of play, the teams went a combined 1-for-12 and each had 2 points.
The first half, which ended 23-22 Resurrection, was fairly sloppy and didn't have much flow ---- this being due to the fact that both teams were well into double bonus by the end of the frame. In addition, 25 (yes, 25!) players combined saw court time in the first half, which also likely had something to do with the flow aspect.
The Phoenix opened up a little breathing space (38-33) after the third quarter, and controlled most of the fourth frame. A tip-in by Andrew Mwangi gave Rez a 42-35 lead with 6:00 left, and an ensuing brickfest over the next 3:30 had RCSS up 46-38 with 2:30 to play.
A couple of Jeff Rodrigues free throws put the Phoenix up by 9 with 1:35 to play, but Northern's speedy guard Givon Luxmore came back and put in a lay-in to cut things to 7.
The Knights would play the "foulfest" game over the remaining 1:30ish of action, but this one would be put to rest when Andrew Mwangi tipped in a missed free-throw to give Rez it's first double digit lead of the contest with :30 left, 52-42. A few more free-throws (on both sides) made the final 55-45 for the Phoenix.
Andrew Mwangi had a solid game for Resurrection, putting in 18 points while hauling in 13 rebounds. Tyler Schneider contributed 12 points, while rookie Cory Kenning had 7 (including a key "and-one" in the third quarter that stemmed Northern's momentum).
Other RCSS scorers included Jeff Rodrigues (5), Cam Gibbs (4), Mike Pereira (4), Jason Chris (3) and Tyler Bartley (1).
Northern received 11 from Luxmore, while Marko Kalabic added in 8 --- albeit on poor shooting performances. Luxmore was just 3-for-20 from the floor, while Kalabic had a 4-for-18 shooting night.
In fact, the Knights had 25 more field goal attempts than the Phoenix (primarily due to many misses/offensive rebounds) but their shooting was definitely a story in this one ---- only 21% from the floor, and 3-for-21 (14%) from outside the arc. Though the Rez defense played a part (especially on the interior), Northern defintely missed a few open looks from the perimeter that definitely could have swung the momentum of this one.
The Phoenix will advance to play one of (arguably) the top 2 teams in the tournament, Oakville Loyola, tomorrow at 4:30pm (St. Mary's).
