D8: Monday Results - Phoenix Juniors, Seniors Top Saints

The Resurrection Phoenix pulled a sweep of junior and senior boys' basketball games on Monday at St. Benedict CSS in Cambridge.

Of course, things aren't always as they seem on paper.

Junior:  RCSS 43, SBCSS 36

In the junior game, the Phoenix won by a 43-36 final --- despite being down 36-33 with 2:00 to go.  The Phoenix rattled off the final ten points of the game, including six points in a :15 span.  Rez also forced five Saint turnovers during that two minute stretch.

All told, the Phoenix scored 20 points in the fourth quarter (after scoring 23 points in the first three 8-minute periods), and turned a 5-point end of third deficit into a 7 point win.

Andrew Pickett had 9 for Rez, with Thomas Hunter adding 8.  Spencer Marshall had a game-high 11 for the Saints, with Aaron Zammit adding 8.

Senior:  RCSS 56, SBCSS 38

On the senior side of things, the Saints got off to a nice start, using a 14-6 second quarter run to actually lead Resurrection 20-18 at halftime!

However, the Phoenix promptly went on a 10-4 run to open the third quarter and did not look back, outscoring the Saints 17-9 in the frame to take a 6-point lead to the fourth.

Early in the final frame, 6'7" big man Cory Kenning established himself down low --- scoring 8 points as part of an 11-0 run to open the quarter, which extended the Rez lead to 19.  The RCSS second string essentially maintained the lead through to the final whistle, with the score ending up 56-38 in favour of the Phoenix.

The Phoenix used their size-edge to their advantage, with Kenning finishing with a game-high 20 points and his fellow front-court partner Mike Pereira adding 12.  Other Phoenix on the scoresheet included Mark Radcliffe (5), Tyler Schneider (4), Stephen Cordle (4), Cam Gibbs (3), Adam Schneider (2), John Moi (2) and Patric McGlynn (2).

Four Saints accounted for all of the SBCSS scoring --- Santo Dak (12), Kueth Geng (11), Josh Edwards (9 - three three-pointers), and Tyler Moulton (6).

Other D8 Action

The Rockway Flames picked up their first senior win of the year, taking out the St. David Celtics by a 60-56 final.  Jordan Fayez (13), Steve Veltri (11) and Alex Sheedy (11) were all in double-figures for Rockway; Jake Winter had 13 for St. David.

The other senior contest saw the St. Mary's Eagles ease past Monsignor Doyle 66-42.  Eric Duong led the way with 11 points for St. Mary's, with Chris Clouthier and Chris Walser adding 9 each.  Manny Singh had a game-high 19 for MDCSS, with Roberto Artwell adding 12.

In junior, the other games on the schedule were convincing wins for the two current top teams in the league, the St. Mary's Eagles and St. David Celtics.

The undefeated Eagles took out Monsignor Doyle 54-28, with Nathan Riley scoring 13 points and Mike Blumel, back in action after missing time with a broken finger, adding 8.  Sebastian Grasso (7) and Ryan Stafford (6) topped the MDCSS scoring.

St. David handled Rockway 63-25.  Tristan Renald (11) and Kwame Adam (8) led the Celts, while Connor Huxman had 11 and Michael Born 9 for Rockway.

Senior: Rez Seniors Head To Florida's Gulfshore Shootout

The Resurrection CSS senior squad will be heading south for the holidays.

Of course, there's a little business that will have to accompany the pleasure as well, as the Phoenix are entered into the 16-team "Gulfshore Shootout" in Naples, Florida.

Things won't be easy as Rez starts out with a December 27th game against Oldsmar Christian High School from Oldsmar, FL, a school that was a top-30 squad in Florida last season, and sent two players to the D1 ranks (6'10" Tim Dixon - Georgia; 6'6" John Brown - High Point).

Oldsmar's top talent this year would appear to be 6'5" forward Brian Pegg, who is being recruited by Winthrop and North Florida among others.  

The Phoenix will take on either Golden Gate HS (Naples) or Southwestern HS (Deland, FL) in round two.

It could be an interesting affair in Cambridge (SBCSS came within single digits of SMHS) but assuming the Phoenix play to their capability, they should pick up the road win.

St. David (1-3) at Rockway (0-4)

My Pick:  SDCSS

A win here will vault the Celtics into a playoff position for the time being.  I think they'll get it done.

Simcoe Shootout: SCS Tops Trinity In Final

The Simcoe CS Sabres took the 4-team "Simcoe Shootout" this past weekend, finishing with a perfect 3-0 record and defeating Holy Trinity of Simcoe in the "championship final" of the round robin tournament.

The competing teams (aside from the Sabres and Titans) included McKinnon Park (Caledonia) and Hagersville SS.  Here are the full results:

Windsor University Tournament: Eagles Fall in Consolation Final

The St. Mary's Eagles, my current #2 team in Senior CWOSSA, went 1-2 over the weekend at the annual University of Windsor Senior Boys' Invitational Tournament.

The Eagles started out on Friday by dropping a low-scoring affair to hometown school Windsor Herman, 41-38, in a game that was tight throughout.  Alex Thompson led the way with 23 points in that one for the Eagles.

This dropped St. Mary's to the consolation side of the bracket against Anderson CVI, a team currently ranked #14 in the GTA.  However, Dyshawn Pierre, Anderson's star player and the #3 ranked recruit in Canada in the class of 2012, didn't play in that one as he suffered an ankle injury on Friday.  Without him, St. Mary's dominated --- leading 39-14 at halftime and cruising to a 64-34 win.  

Five Eagles had 8 points or more in that one --- Telloy Simon (12), Thompson (10), Chris Clouthier (9), Isaac Lance (8) and Tyler Hergott (8).

In the consolation final, the Eagles ran out of steam against Oakville's Holy Trinity (#13 GTA); the Titans held a slim 36-33 lead at half but extended it out in the second half to win going away by a 76-53 final.  Adam Voll poured in 18 points in the loss, with Thompson again hitting double figures with 10.

London's HB Beal won the tournament title, 53-50 over Windsor Herman.  Chevaun Miller-Bennett was named as the tournament's MVP.

Junior: Timmy Rose Results - St. James tops ECI in Final

We'll have more details to come, but I can tell you that the St. James Lions captured the Timmy Rose Memorial (junior) Tournament held at St. David CSS in Waterloo this past weekend.

The Lions, ranked #9 in this past week's rankings, got past a foul-plagued #5 Eastwood squad in the championship game.

Huron Heights defeated St. David in the 3rd place game, while Centre Wellington topped Kitchener Resurrection in the consolation final.

Guelph Mercury: D10 MVP Commits To Women's Hoops Team

GUELPH — Erica McFadden, the two-time most valuable player in the District 10 high school senior girls basketball league, has committed to join the Guelph Gryphons women’s team for the 2012-13 season.

A 5-foot-7 point guard, McFadden was an all-star and the league MVP in both her years in the D10 league after moving to Alma from Chatham. She led the Centre Wellington Falcons to the league title both years.

“Any success I have had is due to the hard work of many dedicated coaches,” McFadden said in a news release. “I chose the University of Guelph because I really felt comfortable on the beautiful campus.

“Overall Guelph seemed to be the best fit for me both academically and athletically. Coach (Tom) O’Brien’s basketball philosophy and his priorities both on and off the court fit well with my values. The basketball team is motivated toward success and the players I had the opportunity to meet made me feel welcome. I feel as though I will ‘gel’ with this group.”

Along with her success at Centre Wellington, McFadden won a national championship in 2011 and a silver medal in 2010 with the provincial under-17 team and a national title with the Ontario under-15 team in 2009. 

She also participated in the Basketball Canada Centre for Performance from 2002 to 2009.

“Erica is a great recruit for our program and she is CIS-ready having played at an elite level for a number of years,” O’Brien said. “She was recruited by a number of high-profile basketball programs both north and south of the border. To Erica’s credit her, first decision was that she did not want to go to an American school. Her next decision was to stay in Ontario and finally to attend Guelph.”

McFadden intends to study psychology at the U of G.

She is one of three recruits who have committed to the team.

The others are guard Brooke Kelly of Elgin, Ont., and wing Kate Yallin of Port Colborne.

The 5-foot-9 Kelly was also her high school league’s MVP this season. She’s helped her team get to the OFSAA A championship tournament each of the last three years and it won medals each time — two silver and a bronze.

The six-foot Yallin will be the fifth of five Yallin sisters to play for the Gryphons, following older sisters Andrea, Alex, Kris and Stephanie — all guards. She led her high school team the last three years and was an all-star the last two.
