D8 Senior - Midseason Review

It's been an interesting year to this point in the D8 league. The top 3 teams have all beaten each other, while the Monsignor Doyle Mustangs have seen tremendous improvement (and have defeated reigning champion St. David in league play). Anyways, here goes with my picks....keep in mind these are based upon league performances:

Midseason 1st Team All-Stars
Andrew Mwangi, Resurrection
Alex Thompson, St. Mary's
Tyson Lavigne, St. David
Josh Loehle, Monsignor Doyle
Mike Schummer, St. David

Midseason 2nd Team All Stars
Ben Bankazo, St. Mary's
Mike Kasunic, St. Mary's
Josh Klassen, Rockway
Tyrone Tindale, St. Benedict
Dan Hummel, St. David
Tyler Schneider, Resurrection

All-Rookie/Newcomer Team
Alex Thompson, St. Mary's
Isaac Lance, St. Mary's
Tyler Schneider, Resurrection
Andrew Mwangi, Resurrection
Josh Loehle, Monsignor Doyle

Surprise Team (Positive): No question here. Monsignor Doyle has improved tremendously, and have been competitive with the upper echelon while knocking off St. David. It's been a while since the Mustangs have graced us with their presence in the playoffs, so it's nice to see them as a competitive club this year.

Surprise Team (Negative): A very balanced league, but obviously the Celts' loss to Doyle earns them the dubious distinction to this point in the year. They have, however, had some good out of league wins (including WCI).

Second Half Predictions
Who knows what to expect in the D8? The top 3 teams (RCSS/SMHS/SDCSS) have proven that they're able to beat each other on any given night ---- and then throw the upset potential from an ever-improving Doyle squad (who are a top 6 team at the AAA level) and even St. Benedict in there and we could see some interesting things.

As a sidenote, there's currently 3 D8 teams in my senior top 10 (Rez, St. Mary's, and St. David). D8 is probably the "power league" this season (at least on a "per-capita" basis).

I'm right now leaning towards a SMHS/RCSS final, based upon the amount of depth that those teams are bringing to the table. Still a long way to go though.......

Alumni Alert - United States

We'll get to a Canadian update soon. Here's how our friends down south have been performing:

Women

May Kotsopoulos, Vermont - NCAA D1 (Senior)
The Catamounts are 8-2 on the year (with losses coming to #1 ranked UConn and Oklahoma State out of the Big 12.

Kotsopoulos leads Vermont in scoring (18.9 PPG) and also is averaging 2.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.7 steals per contest. She's shooting 42.6% from three-point land and a solid 80% from the line.

Kaila Montgomery, Cleveland State - NCAA D1 (Redshirt Freshman)
The WCI grad has not yet seen action for the (aptly named) Vikings --- she also redshirted last season due to knee injury.

Men

Bryson Johnson, Bucknell - NCAA D1 (Freshman)
The Bisons are 4-8 on the year thus far, and last night dropped a 101-69 decision to Notre Dame. Johnson, however, was Bucknell's leading scorer with 17 points (see the
Yahoo Boxscore here).

The St. David grad is averaging just under 10 points per contest (9.9), 1.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists. Johnson's season high of 19 points came against Wagner on November 28th in an 85-61 victory.

He's shooting 34.7% from the floor and 34.5% from three point range ---- the similarity is not surprising considering about 85% of his field goal attempts and makes are from beyond the arc! He's also been a solid 88% from the line thus far.

Murphy Burnatowski, Maine - NCAA D1 (Freshman)
Burnatowski, who starts for the Bears, had 5 points in a losing effort last night against #11 UConn. The Bears were tied with the Huskies 26-26 at halftime, before being outscored in the second half en route to a 71-54 loss (see the
Yahoo Boxscore here).

The Bears are 5-5 on the year, with losses at Syracuse and UConn.

Burnatowski is averaging 4.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists on the campaign in 16.2 minutes of action per contest. His season high of 13 points came in a 133-58 destruction of D-III school Maine-Presque Isle, while against D1 opposition he hit for 8 points against Quinnipiac.

Imad Qahwash, Central Arkansas - NCAA D1 (Junior)
The Grand River grad (via Harmony Prep in Cincinnati) has started all 12 games for the 5-7 Bears, who have played at #1 Kansas and at perennial power Memphis.

The 6'2" point guard is actually third on the team in rebounding (5.1 RPG) while putting in 4.8 points per game and adding 2.2 assists.

He has been playing well as of late, scoring 10 points against both Tennessee-Martin and Harris Stowe State University (NAIA). Yesterday, he chipped in 2 points and pulled down 9 'boards during a 55-44 loss to Western Illinois (see
Yahoo Boxscore here).

Jon House, Belmont University - NCAA D1 (Junior)
The third-year Bruin is averaging 7.0 PPG, 3.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists for the 7-4 Bruins. In addition, he's shooting over 50% (50.9% to be exact) from the field.

He pumped home 17 points (December 8th in an 83-71 win over Middle Tennessee State) on 6-7 shooting including 3-3 from three-point land. His career high of 20 points came last season, though he has had 4 games in double digits to this point in the season.

Aleksa Rovic, Southwestern Oklahoma State - NCAA D2 (Freshman)
Although the stats page from the SWOSU website has been down as of late, I can tell you that the freshman has started a couple games of late for the Bulldogs, scoring 3 points in 10 minutes against Tarleton College and adding 5 points in 24 minutes during a 67-35 win over Rhema Bible College.

Against Eastern New Mexico, he played an efficient 13 minutes off the bench scoring 6 points (2-3 FG, 1-2 FG, 1-1 FT), while adding 3 rebounds and a steal.

SWOSU is currently 4-8 on the year.

Boyd Vassell, Iowa Central Community College - NJCAA (Freshman)
Vassell has been seeing some good floor time for Iowa CCC, having scored 11 points in a recent loss against Southeastern Iowa CC. He currently ranks second in conference in free-throw shooting (30/34, .882).

While unsuccessfully stumbling around looking for stats, I did come across this cool website with some of the all-time great performances of various leagues, including Canadian High School basketball. See it here. Vassell's 55 points against CHCI last year made a list of all-time great performances by Canadian High School hoopsters, which is naturally led by Denham Brown's 111 point game a few years back.

Mike Onochie, San Pasqual HS (San Diego Area, CA) - High School Junior
The former Resurrection junior starter was named as a high school athlete of the week after scoring 53 points in 3 games for the Eagles. He's currently averaging 14.0 PPG while the Eagles are 4-2 on the season.

WCSSAA (Senior) Strength of Schedule

....for the top 9 teams at present.

After the break, it looks like KCI has (by far) the best schedule --- combined opponent record of 12-20 but they don't face any of the current top 5 teams (already played SJAM (L) & SSS (W)).

Jacob Hespeler (currently 2-2) are at the other end of the spectrum. Their combined opponent record is a solid 20-12....and they have all 5 teams currently 3-1 or better on their schedule!

Here's the rundown:

2nd Annual Husky/Phoenix Jr. Boys Teams Announced

Participating teams have been announced for the 2nd annual Huron Heights/Resurrection junior boys "Husky/Phoenix" tournament. The tournament takes place January 8th and 9th (games get under way at 8:30am at both locations), however, the draw is yet to be finalized.

This is a sixteen-team "bracketed" tournament.

Current teams in my CWOSSA top 10 are bolded.

D5 (Brantford): St. John's, North Park

D8 (KWC Catholic): Resurrection, St. David, St. Benedict

WCSSAA: Huron Heights, Grand River, WCI, Cameron Heights, Galt Collegiate

D10: JF Ross

Non-CWOSSA: St. Thomas Aquinas (London), Central (Stratford), South (London), Bishop Ryan (Hamilton), Philip Pocock (Mississauga).

The defending champions of the tournament are the Guelph JF Ross Royals, who came out with hot shooting beat the Resurrection Phoenix in the finals ---- that and a loss to Brampton D'Youville were the only two losses for the 48-2 Phoenix last year.

D10 Junior "Midseason" Awards & Review

After the senior review yesterday, here's a quick rundown of the D10 junior ranks.

First-Team All-Stars
Chris Watson (Lourdes)
Erik Sterne (CCVI)
Mike Friesen (JF Ross)
Mitchell Wood (Bishop Mac)
Michael Clouthier (Bishop Mac)

Second-Team All-Stars
Jesse Kendall (Bishop Mac)
Nick Maule (JF Ross)
Jordan Trimble (Lourdes)
Emilio Pivato (St. James)
Kyle Holmes (Orangeville DSS)
Aleks Kaludjerovic (Centennial)

....yes, I realize I have six second teamers.

(Positive) Surprise Team
Toss-up between Bishop Mac and Lourdes. I'm going to go with Lourdes based upon the fact that they were a 6th place team last season. Yes, they had a ton of grade 9s but they did lose all-stars Sharieff Peru and Mike Finoro to the senior ranks. Good things were expected, yes. But the Crusaders are one of the top teams in all of CWOSSA right now.

(Negative) Surprise Team
I think things in the junior D10 circuit are pretty much going to form --- but since I have to pick somebody I'll give a co-"award" to Centre-Wellington and GCVI. These clubs combined for 15 wins last year, but have just 3 combined to this point.

Second Half Predictions
The big difference between D10 junior and senior? D10 senior seems to be a lot more competitive top to bottom ---- as evidenced by the Bishop Mac juniors recent 71 point trouncing of ODSS.

Bishop Mac & Lourdes should fight it out for the D10 title (the winner will also get a CWOSSA title for their efforts). I probably could have filled the first and second team with Celtics and Crusaders alone; however, I like to try and balance things out where possible.

St. James is looking like a legit 3rd place team, with wins over CCVI and JF Ross. However, the Lions are in tough to get to CWOSSA as they must go through my current #2 team out of D4, Centre Dufferin, to get there.

Ross & Centennial look like they will be your two "AAAA" CWOSSA reps, barring a big upset or two.

Projected AAAA Participants: JF Ross and Centennial
Projected AAA Participant: None
Projected AA Participant: Bishop Mac

Up Next: D8 Senior

Karsten Beney cracks Bryson's Top 10

Bluevale guard Karsten Beney was among Mark Bryson's Top 10 High School Athletes of the Week. The following excerpt is from Bryson's High School Sports Blog:

Karsten Beney, Bluevale: The Grade 12 guard had two solid outings last week as the Knights improved to 4-0 in the Waterloo County senior boys basketball league standings. He scored 20 points on Tuesday in a 63-36 romp over Glenview Park and added 12 in Bluevale's 51-49 win over SJAM on Thursday. Beney took the heat off Bluevale star Stefan Cvrkalj in the second half as SJAM double-teamed the game's top player. Beney also plays with the Knights football squad.

Centre Dufferin 64, Resurrection 41

Welcome to the rankings, Centre Dufferin!

After wins over Lourdes & Resurrection, I have decided to award the current #2 CWOSSA junior ranking to the Centre Dufferin Royals.

Don't blame me on being late to the party, but there's really only so much that I can discern from a blowout win over Norwell or Wellington Heights.

In today's action, the Royals jumped on the RCSS Phoenix by a 37-15 halftime score and cruised home for the 23 point win.

Resurrection (41)
Adam Schneider - 15
Ryan De Vega - 8
Alphonso Ellis - 6
Adrian Russell - 5
Alex Zamin - 2
Kyle Wilson - 2
Cory Kenning - 2
Diego Herrera - 1

Tyler Bartley - DNP

Centre Dufferin DHS (64)
Carlo Zanette - 23
Marco Zanette - 20
Dan Craig - 9
Doug Costanzo - 5
Matt Flance - 4
James Dryer - 2

RCSS 6-9-11-15 = 41
CDDHS 15-22-14-13 = 64

Therefore, the new CWOSSA junior rankings will be as such (also note the new 'top 10' poll to the right):

#1 - Bishop Mac (AA)
#2 - Centre Dufferin (AAA)
#3 - Lourdes (AA)
#4 - Forest Heights (AAAA)
#5 - St. John's (AAAA)
#6 - Resurrection (AAAA)
#7 - Huron Heights (AAA)
#8 - Waterloo CI (AAAA)
#9 - Grand River (AAAA)
#10 - St. Mary's (AAAA)

D4 Junior: CDDHS Royals For Real!

The (junior) Shelburne Centre-Dufferin District High School Royals have been quietly going about their business with little fanfare.

The Royals, who were a semifinalist in the junior AAA CWOSSA championships last season (defeating #3 Waterloo-Oxford 50-47 in the first round), play in District 4---a
league that doesn't get a lot of attention (especially this year with only four teams in the league --- Norwell, Wellington Hts, CDDHS and Westside SS). So far, the Royals have blown away the opposition. Their average margin of victory thus far? 43 points. Yes, that's their margin of victory, not their average points scored per contest. Yikes.

The Royals are led by Carlo and Marco Zanette (Carlo currently leads our 20+ club with a 37-point outburst against the second place Westside SS Thunder).

Interestingly enough, the internet message boards are abuzz with recent results. According to a hoop-la poster, the Royals have split exhibition games with Guelph Lourdes. Lourdes is currently my #2 junior team, so I may have to update those rankings and apologize to the Royals in the process.

In fairness, there isn't a lot out there on CDDHS in the Orangeville/Shelburne news sources, so there isn't much more we can pass along at this time. We will, however, have some more results to pass along soon --- the Royals have scheduled a few home exhibition games over the break, including one against a to-be-determined AAAA Guelph school and today's tilt at home against current #5 Kitchener Resurrection.

Update: As per a blog comment, Centre Dufferin beat Resurrection today by about 25 points.

D10 Senior Midseason Awards & Review

Over the holidays, I'll try and still throw up a few things to keep people entertained.

Here's the first of a couple "midseason" reviews (I realize that WCSSAA, with the postponement of the Dec. 8th games, is only 1/3 through their schedule...).

D10 Senior

Midseason All-Stars

First Team
Rob House, Centennial (MVP)
Ryan Higgins, St. James
Ryan Cook, JF Ross
Sharieff Peru, Our Lady of Lourdes
Mike Finoro, Our Lady of Lourdes

Second Team
Adrian Varilla, Centennial
Jay Francis, Centennial
Justin MacNamara, CWDHS
Gavin MacNamara, CWDHS
James Ingram, Guelph CVI

All-Rookie Team
Mike Finoro, Our Lady of Lourdes
Sharieff Peru, Our Lady of Lourdes
Gavin MacNamara, CWDHS
Reid Giondi, CWDHS
Shamlo Saeed, JF Ross
Owen Moynihan, JF Ross

(Positive) Surprise Team
St. James is off to a great start, but I'm going to have to go with the Lourdes Crusaders. Lourdes has already doubled up last year's win total (they were 2-12 during the D10 regular season), and just before the Christmas break were able to beat JF Ross at home. In addition, they were able to hang with the first place Centennial Spartans before falling by a 74-69 score.

Rookies Mike Finoro and Sharieff Peru have been adjusting fine to senior-level play, and are both scoring 20+ points per contest.

(Negative) Surprise Team
With the graduation of the bulk of their scoring offense, you had to figure that the Bishop Mac Celtics would struggle. The Celts, however, have only been able to muster a 2-6 league record at the break ---- with both wins coming over winless Orangeville. That said, the Celts are a young club and should continue to see solid talent move up through their junior program over the next couple of years, so this downturn should be short-lived.

Second Half Predictions
So far with the D10, the theme has been "expect the unexpected". Although things have gone (relatively) to form, top seeded Centennial has had a couple of close calls with the lower half of the league (GCVI - 2 point win, ODSS -5 point win).

I'm still thinking that we're going to see a CCVI/St. James final, but we'll see what the other six clubs have to say about that. If one team gets hot (especially come playoff time), things could get interesting.

Projected AAAA Participants: CCVI (1), JFR or CWHDS (2)
Projected AAA Participant: St. James
Projected AA Participant: Our Lady of Lourdes

The Record: Beney Bros. Help Knights Win Sloppy One Over Highlanders

http://news.therecord.com/Sports/article/646663

By Mark Bryson, Record staff

WATERLOO — With Stefan Cvrkalj getting the lion’s share of the attention, the Beney Bros. made the most of their opportunity to shine.

Andrew Beney had 13 points and Karsten Beney chipped in with 12 as the Bluevale Knights scored a sloppy 51-49 win over the Sir John A. Macdonald Highlanders on Thursday afternoon. Despite being double-teamed for much of the game, Cvrkalj led the Knights with 19 points as they improved to 4-0 in the Waterloo County senior boys basketball standings while dropping SJAM to 3-1.

Andrew Beney, who was a monster on the boards, scored 11 of his points in the first half as the Knights led 30-25 at the break. Karsten scored eight in the second as the Highlanders clearly focused their defensive attention on Cvrkalj.

“Other people have to step up when they double (Cvrkalj), so that’s what I look to do,” said Karsten Beney. “The plan was to get it to me a bit more in the second half and I’m just glad a few went in for me.”

The game was far from a thing of beauty as a playoff-like atmosphere and a rugged brand of play led to a number of turnovers and poor shooting decisions by both teams. Karsten Beney chalked it up to nerves, with both teams not being used to such a high-energy game this early in the season.

While happy with the win, Karsten Beney said his team had learned a valuable lesson by building a 10-point lead in the first quarter and letting the defending champs claw their way back.

“When we are up like we were, we have to take care of the ball and start pulling away and not let the other team back into the game,” he said.

Edem Ame led the Highlanders with 14 points while Kwame Botchway added 13. Big man Jake Robinet was held to eight points before fouling out on a marginal call with more than seven minutes to play in the game.

Still, the Highlanders refused to quit with their top player gone and even managed to go up by one when Usman Khalid scored to put SJAM up 46-45.

Cvrkalj stormed back down the court and scored a layup to put the Knights back on top at 47--46, a lead they would never relinquish. Cvrkalj added four more points from the free-throw line before SJAM’s Ben Reyhani nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer to finish the scoring.

“We fought all the way back, got up by one and then we lost track of their best player. I’m not sure how that happens,” said SJAM coach Steve Maloney.

“It was a little bit sloppy by both teams, but I think they created a lot of intensity with their defence and they forced us into some of that stuff. I’ve got to give them full credit.”

The WCI Vikings are the only other undefeated team at 4-0 after a 63-50 win over the Grand River Renegades. WCI and Bluevale will play in the first game back from the Christmas break.

CWOSSA Senior & Junior Fan/Player/Coach Polls

Thinking of starting these up.....chance for the blog readers out there to have a say:

Send me an email (
cwossabasketball@hotmail.com) of who you believe the top 10 overall CWOSSA teams (you can send for senior, junior or both).

Weekly, I will post a list of the tallied results with a points system:

1st place vote = 10 points
2nd place vote = 9 points
3rd place vote = 8 points

....and so on

I'll keep all responses confidential, just so you know.

Also, you are allowed to use teams that I don't have in my top 10+. Of course, any obvious "farce" submissions (i.e. putting an 0-5 team as #1 in CWOSSA) will be disregarded.

Anyways, we'll set the deadline for this first one for Wednesday, December 23rd. So email me your thoughts!

**Update: So far, we have about 5-6 responses. Appreciate it, and keep them coming!**

Friday CWOSSA Junior Power Rankings

CWOSSA-Wide Power Rankings - Week 3 Junior (Last week in brackets)

Just a word of warning before I get 2000 emails and messages - these are very hard to put together, especially this year with everyone beating everyone else.

Take WCSSAA especially.....

Huron Hts over WCI, WCI over FHCI & GRCI, FHCI over GRCI & SJAM.......but GRCI has beaten RCSS in tournament play. Makes things interesting!

While doing these, I've added extra weighting to league performance......just so you know.

1. Bishop Macdonell CSS - Guelph/D10 (3)

  • The Celtics defeated Resurrection & Forest Heights handily, and defeated Lourdes solidly in league play. They rounded out their week with an 81-10 destruction over Orangeville in D10 play.
  • Key Wins: FHCI, RCSS, OLOL, St. John's
  • Key Losses: None

2. Our Lady of Lourdes CSS - Guelph/D10 (9)

  • Huge jump for the Crusaders, due in part to their close affair with Bishop Mac.....as well as the fact that numerous teams above them lost this week. After seeing them, they're definitely for real.
  • Key Wins: JF Ross (2x), Centennial, St. James
  • Key Losses: Bishop Mac

3. Forest Heights Collegiate - Kitchener/WCSSAA (2)

  • A couple easy league wins sandwiched around an 81-60 exhibition loss to Bishop Mac.
  • Key Wins: GRCI (2x), RCSS, SJAM
  • Key Losses: Bishop Mac, WCI

4. St. John's College - Brantford/D5 (T4)

  • I still think the Eagles could be higher; however, very tough to get a gauge on them based upon league games against some weak D5 teams.
  • Key Wins: 4-0 in D5
  • Key Losses: Bishop Mac

5. Resurrection CSS - Kitchener/D8 (6)

  • 1st Place D8 (5-0)
  • Key Wins: St. Mary's, SJAM, JF Ross, Huron Heights, Cameron Heights (2x)
  • Key Losses: Bishop Mac, Forest Heights, Grand River

6. Huron Heights HS - Kitchener/WCSSAA (T10)

  • 4-0 in league play; T-1st in WCSSAA
  • Key Wins: Cameron Heights, Waterloo CI, St. Mary's
  • Key Losses: Grand River, Resurrection

7. Waterloo Collegiate - Waterloo/WCSSAA (1)

  • A loss to Huron Hts and a squeaker over GRCI in WCSSAA play this week.
  • Key Wins: Forest Heights, Grand River
  • Key Losses: Huron Heights

8. Grand River Collegiate - Kitchener/WCSSAA (T4)

  • 2-2 in WCSSAA with losses to WCI & Forest Heights
  • Key Wins: Resurrection, St. Mary's, Huron Heights

Monsignor Doyle 54, Paris 49

The Monsignor Doyle Mustangs were victorious over the Paris DHS Panthers in an "all-AAA" CWOSSA senior exhibition game on Thursday.

Doyle was able to withstand a 34 point barrage from PDHS' Josh Fabe, who led all scorers. R. Brijallal had 16 for MDCSS.

The night previous, the Mustangs were missing 2 starters and only had 5 players against the St. Mary's Eagles due to suspensions and the flu. Despite this, the 'Stangs were within 10 points of St. Mary's entering the final quarter before the fresher Eagles eventually pulled away.

WCSSAA Thursday Results

Junior Boys Basketball

Jacob Hespeler 68, Elmira 17

My Pick: JHSS

No trouble for the Hawks here. Jason Quiring led with 12, while Josh Kirkham chipped in 9 points. Walker Stewart had 8 for Elmira.

Cameron Heights 62, Waterloo-Oxford 28
My Pick: CHCI

Don't look now but the Gaels have reeled off three straight junior wins. CHCI's Vedran Dmitrovic (16) and Jason Thompson (12) equalled the 28 points put up by the entire WODSS team.

Glenview Park 62, KCI 42
My Pick: GPSS

After a bit of a stumble against Bluevale, the Panthers are back on track. Andrew Squires pumped in 24 points, while Erist Wame also hit double figures for Glenview with 10.

KCI's leading scorer Amanj Aras-Saber had 15 points for the Raiders.

Huron Heights 67, Preston 29

My Pick: HHHS

Don't look now but the Huskies are sitting atop the standings at 4-0. Sam Hernandez (18) and Sean Samuel (17) led the way today for Huron, while Wes Meertens had another strong game for PHS with 19 points.

Forest Heights 64, Eastwood 37

My Pick: FHCI

The Trojans improve to 3-1 with a solid win at home. Vishal Sandhi scored 15, while Javon Masters had 14 (I'm sure in limited minutes). For ECI, Alan Sanchez led the way with 7.

Waterloo CI 53, Grand River 51

My Pick: GRCI

My lone junior pick wrong on the day, as the Vikes take a squeaker and drop the Renegades to .500 on the year. The Vikes' balanced attack had three players in double figures ---- Jacob Ranton (13), Zach Totzke (10) and Malcolm Piazza (10). For GRCI, Filip Cvrkalj had 20, while Chuder Teny chipped in 7 points.

SJAM 60, Bluevale 47

My pick: SJAM

No Connor? No Theshawn? No problem --- the Highlanders (along with HHHS) are at 4-0 as well after their win at Bluevale.

Senior Boys Basketball

Forest Hts 70, Eastwood 53

My Pick: FHCI
My Line: FHCI by 12

Trojans get back on the winning track, thanks in part to Taylor McNaughton's 19 points. Steffon Heyliger led all scorers with 21 for Eastwood.

Bluevale 51, SJAM 49

My Pick: SJAM
My Line: SJAM by 5

The Knights almost let it slip away but get it done at home. Stefan Cvrkalj had 19 for Bluevale, while Kwame Botchway's distance shooting was key in helping SJAM stick around. He finished with 14 for the Highlanders.

Cameron Heights 42, WODSS 25
My Pick: CHCI
My Line: CHCI by 19

Looks like the bench got plenty of work in this one for Cameron, as the league's leading scorer (Stefan Arezina) was not among the leading scorers. Zach Sinclair (10) and rookie Stefan Cucak (8) were the top Cameron performers on Thursday.

Preston 67, Huron Heights 44

My Pick: PHS
My Line: PHS by 7

The Panthers get another victory to even up their record on the year. Jeff Robinson again hits the 20 point mark for Preston, while Ron Bougram led Huron with 14 points.

Jacob Hespeler 58, Elmira 38
My Pick: JHSS
My Line: JHSS by 8

Three JHSS players combined for 44 of their 58 points --- Joel Perkins (16), Jeremy Perkins (14), and Brendan VanDykan (14).

Brandon Seip was the lone Lancer in double digits with 10.

KCI 75, Glenview 35
My Pick: KCI
My Line: KCI by 27

No trouble for the Raiders as they cruise past Glenview Park. Arben Kalaba had 15 points while Tristan Ruddock chipped in 10 more for the Raiders.

For the winless Panthers, Cory Prince led the way with 10.

Southwood 43, Galt 18
My Pick: SSS
My Line: SSS by 15

No trouble for the Sabres here, as they use a solid defensive effort to take down the Ghosts, who are having trouble putting up some points (24 against KCI, 18 here).

Greg Marjerrison had 10 for SSS, while Mark Stotesbury added 7. For Galt, Tyler Audet (6) and Nic Bradford (5) led the way.

WCI 63, Grand River 50

Been a while since I've had one exactly right, so thanks to the Lions for helping me out.

Ryan Higgins (10), Kelan McCormack (9), and Kenny Hasson (6) led the balanced Lion attack. On the flip side, top Gael performers were Joe Warnholtz (10), James Ingram (6), and Ervin Uzonovic (6).

My Line Was: BMAC by 7

The Celtics pick up their second senior win of the year ---- both at the expense of the ODSS Bears. Patrick Clouthier led Bishop Mac (and all scorers) with 11 points, while his teammates Nigel Dyer and Kyle Phillips each chipped in 9.

Gordon Dewar had 10 for ODSS, while Taylor Ellis contributed 9.

JUNIOR

St. James 46, GCVI 40

The Lions sweep the season series from the Gaels, and improve their chances at getting homecourt advantage in the playoffs.

For St. James, Emilio Pivato had 15 while Marcus Willock put in 10. GCVI's Landon McLaren led the Gaels with 14.

Centennial 49, Centre Wellington 29

Centennial's "three-headed monster" was up to their usual tricks, all hitting in double figures (Edward Gray 17, Erik Sterne 16, Aleks Kaludjerovic 10). For CW, Jacob Clark was the lone Falcon in double figures with 10, while Sivan Heeralall and Trevor Hiseler had 4 each.

Lourdes 55 JF Ross 48

The Crusaders were able to withstand a 32 point effort from JF Ross' Mike Friesen as they earn the victory.

Lourdes had three with double digits --- Chris Watson (14), Ben King (11), and Jordan Trimble (10).

Bishop Mac 81, Orangeville 10

No problems for BMac as they rout ODSS. 5 Celtic players had 9 or more --- Walt Olson (11), Ben Morris (11), Lucas Depieri (10), James Whiteside (9) and Owen Brombal (9).

ODSS' David Humphrey had 6 of the Bears' 10 points.

WCSSAA Senior - Bluevale 51, SJAM 49

(Information submitted via email by a blog reader - thank you!)

Bluevale CI - 51
SJAM - 49

BCI - 20 - 10- 11 - 10
SJAM - 10 - 15 - 9 - 15

Bluevale
Stefan Cvrkalj - 19
Andrew Beney - 13
Karsten Beney - 12

Sir John A Macdonald
Kwame Botchway - 14 (3 threes)
Ben Reyhani - 11 (3 threes)
Edem Ame - 11
Jake Robinet - 8

Game report (submitted by blog reader):

Sloppy game overall that included 17 first half turnovers (BCI 8/SJAM 9). Bluevale put up strong half court ball pressure that kept SJAM unable to enter into the post, shoot a three or do too much else. However, often times the Knights gave it right back or missed open looks off of the turnovers.

Bluevale led the entire game and it was not as close as the score would indicate (this being despite SJAM's constant deny defense and double teams on Stefan Cvrkalj).

The Knights led 9-5, asserted their dominance on defense, went on a 7-0 run and finished the first quarter up 20-10 due in large part to their transition game.

The Highlanders battled back in the second quarter (especially once Andrew Beney went to the bench with foul trouble) to close to a 30-25 halftime deficit.

In the third quarter, with the game slowed to a crawl, Jake Robinet committed his fourth foul. At the time, the Highlanders found themselves down 39-29 but then surprisingly went on a 5-0 run to close the gap to 39-34 before a Bluevale bucket allowed them to close the quarter up seven.

The fourth quarter started with Robinet picking up his 5th foul on a charge, and that's actually when it started to get interesting. The Knights stopped running and seemed to start playing not to lose. Bluevale had a comfortable 45-37 lead due to the slow pace until Kwame Botchway hit a key three point basket. To boot, there was a Bluevale off the ball foul (while in the penalty) with allowed SJAM to score two more on free throws (a 5 point possession!)----making the score 45-42.

With 2:30 left in the game, Edem Ame hit 2 of his 9 second half points to close the gap to one. After that bucket, there was no scoring for over a minute and a half as both teams were obviously exhausted due to infrequent substitutions.

Bluevale attempted to run some clock with about 1:30 left in the game, but after taking :30 off the clock turned the ball over. Ame then hit a layup with :30 to actually give SJAM the lead but Cvrkalj came right back for Bluevale with a layup of his own to put the Knights back up one with 20 ticks remaining.

After a Highlander time out, Bluevale came out with a 1-2-2 halfcourt trap and forced a Brian Reiter turnover. With Bluevale having gained possession, the Highlanders had to resort to fouling. Unfortunately for them, they fouled quite possibly the best free throw shooter in the league in Stefan Cvrkalj. Cvrkalj converted both from the line, putting the Knights up three (49-46).

Bluevale offered full court pressure off the make and the Highlanders promptly threw the ball away again a second time and had to (again) foul Cvrkalj......who again converted both to give the Knights a five point edge at 51-46 with :06 remaining.

SJAM's Ben Reyhani hit a deep three with time expiring to bring the game to its final 51-49 margin.

WCSSAA & D10 Selections - Thursday, December 17

YTD WCSSAA Junior Picks: 19-5 (.792)
YTD D10 Senior Picks: 24-3 (.889)

WCSSAA Senior

Eastwood (1-2) at Forest Heights (1-2)
Pick: FHCI
Line: FHCI by 12

I think the Trojans will even up their record here----at least, they had better with SJAM & KCI looming on the schedule the week after the break.

SJAM (3-0) at Bluevale (3-0) ***Game of the Day/Week***
Pick: SJAM
Line: SJAM by 5

Should be a close one at Bluevale, and homecourt edge may give the Knights the edge. However, if SJAM can continue to play like they did on Tuesday, they should be able to win this contest.

Of course, I don't think this will be the last time we see these clubs play this season.....

WCI (3-0) at Grand River (2-1)
Pick: WCI
Line: WCI by 9

I think the Vikes have a bit too much size for the Rens to handle here.

WODSS (1-2) at Cameron Hts (1-2)
Pick: Cameron
Line: CHCI by 19

The Gaels, who probably started with the toughest schedule in WCSSAA, get to even up their record today on home court.

Preston (1-2) at Huron Heights (1-2)
Pick: PHS
Line: PHS by 7

An interesting game over at Huron. I'll take the Panthers and Jeff Robinson over the up-and-coming Huskies.

KCI (2-1) at Glenview Park (0-3)
Pick: KCI
Line: KCI by 27

After three games, surprising that there's only one team in senior WCSSAA without a win --- the GPSS Panthers. Their first one definitely won't come today against the Raiders.

Jacob Hespeler (1-2) at Elmira (1-2)
Pick: JHSS
Line: JHSS by 8

I think the Hawks are better than they have shown thus far. I hope (for my picks record sake) that they get it going on the road today.

Galt (1-2) at Southwood (2-1) - 7:00pm
Pick: SSS
Line: SSS by 15

Gotta love the 7pm start time over at Southwood---should see a lot more parents, players of other teams, and hopefully fans in general at the game.

The evening game earns big points in my books so I'll say that SSS earns a double digit win here.

Junior Picks
Eastwood @ FHCI (Pick: FHCI)

SJAM @ Bluevale (Pick: SJAM)
WCI @ Grand River (Pick: Grand River)
WODSS @ Cameron (Pick: Cameron)
Preston @ Huron Hts (Pick: HHHS)
KCI @ Glenview Park (Pick: Glenview Park)
Jacob Hespeler @ EDSS (Pick: JHSS)
Galt @ Southwood (Pick: Galt)

D10 Senior Picks

Hopefully I keep up the hot streak.....

Something that caught my eye today in the D10 standings (senior) was the fact that they are a mirror image of each other.

IE - 7-0, 6-1, 5-2, 4-3, 3-4, 2-5, 1-6, 0-7.

Anyways, that won't last long because we have these 5:30pm tilts scheduled for today:

ODSS (0-7) at Bishop Mac (1-6)
Pick: BM
Line: BM by 7

ODSS came close last time against the Celtics, and this should be no different. Bishop Mac in a squeaker.

Centre Wellington (4-3) at CCVI (7-0)
Pick: CCVI
Line: CCVI by 19

I think the Spartans are back. CCVI won the last meeting by 31, and are definitely a tough matchup for CW. Centennial to roll here.

JF Ross (5-2) at Lourdes (3-4)
Pick: JFR
Line: JFR by 8

Won't be easy for the Royals over at Lourdes, but I still anticipate them prevailing in a close affair.

GCVI (2-5) at St. James (6-1)
Pick: STJ
Line: STJ by 11

After dropping their first D10 game of the year, I look for the Lions to get back in the win column before the break at home against GCVI. I also think that Ryan Higgins will make up for his 6 points against CCVI here.

Junior Boys: Bishop Mac 81, Forest Heights 60

The Bishop Mac Celtics have established themselves as the clear-cut #1 team in CWOSSA junior boys basketball with an 81-60 exhibition victory over Forest Heights.

In the last week, the Celtics have defeated three "top ten" clubs --- Resurrection and Forest Heights (both by 20+), and Lourdes by 9 in league play.

Earlier, at the Timmy Rose tournament, Bishop Mac defeated Brantford St. John's (currently my #4 team) by 17 points.

After a relatively close first half, the Celtics realized they weren't going to be able to stop both Javon Masters and Juwan Miller. As a result, they keyed in on slowing Miller in the second half, and were able to hold him to 10 points for the game. Masters ended up with a game high 30 points in a losing effort.

For Bishop Mac, Michael Clouthier and Mitchell Wood each scored 23 points.

Game Scorers:

Bishop Mac - Michael Clouthier (23), Mitchell Wood (23), Alex Quintieri (14), Ben Morris (7), Owen Brombal (4), Jesse Kendall (2), Zach Visentin (2), James Whiteside (2), Lucas Depieri (2), Adam Slater (1).

Forest Heights - Javon Masters (30), Juwan Miller (10), Vishal Sandhu (10), Ian Anderson (9), Mo Al-Hares (1).

D10 Pick - Wednesday, December 16th

One game today in D10.....

ODSS (0-6) at JF Ross (4-2)
Pick: JFR
Line: JFR by 22

....interestingly enough, the closest game that ODSS has played this year? Against the current #1 team in the D10, Centennial (4 point loss). Not sure how this one will play out, especially if Ross substitutes freely, but I'll take the Royals to win this 4pm tilt.

D10 Scoring Leaders

Times that a particular individual has appeared as a leading scorer are listed in brackets after the point total.

Keep in mind that the JFR/ODSS game will be made up this evening, so JFR & ODSS have only played 6 games (vs. 7 for everyone else).

(2) Forest Heights at (3) Bishop Mac - CWOSSA Junior Game

Huge game today down at Bishop Mac (5:00pm tip time). With the WCI Vikings losing last night, it would appear at though top spot in this week's junior rankings will go to the winning club.

Let's take a look......

Forest Heights Trojans

The Trojans have essentially the best guard pairing in CWOSSA --- Juwan Miller & Javon Masters. The high-scoring duo has been lighting teams up to this point in the season. Both are deadly from beyond the arc, but can also penetrate and finish through contact.

The duo will be key in handling Bishop Mac's pressure defense.

The Trojans also benefit from an active and above-average sized forward crew, led by OFSAA triple-jump medallist Nienkel Paljola. He has a knack for getting to loose balls (or offensive rebounds) and finishing inside.

The Trojans enter the game with one loss on the year, having blown a 20+ point lead to the WCI Vikings in their opening league game. Key wins so far for the Trojans have included Resurrection, Grand River (2x), SJAM, Sarnia St. Christopher, and Sarnia Northern.

Bishop Macdonell Celtics

The Celtics enter the game undefeated, and have a few key wins of their own over some top-ten teams (St. John's, Lourdes, Resurrection).

The Celts are a lot deeper than Forest Heights, and need to use that edge to their advantage to prevail.

Also, they have a slightly more balanced offensive attack----and can have any number of guys hurt you on any given night. You need proof? How about the fact that Mitchell Wood, Jesse Kendall, Michael Cloutier, Ben Morris, Sean Young, and Alex Quintieri have all scored in double-figures at one point or another during BMac's first seven league games? It seems that if one player is having an off-night, someone else can step in to pick up the slack.

Prediction
Should be a great game down in South Guelph, and despite last week's rankings, I think the Celtics have the edge, especially at home.
Bishop Mac 58, Forest Heights 50
