This past weekend a the SJAM junior boys Highlander Hoopla tournament, JF Ross from Guelph was playing Kitchener St. Mary's in a "friendly" game (both teams had lost their second round clashes to Resurrection and Grand River, respectively).
In the second half (following a JF Ross player fouling out), coach Charles Douglas, who was frustrated with the officiating as well as the players that were on his bench, elected not to substitute for the player that had just fouled out. Instead, he chose to play approximately 2:30 - 3:00 of game time with just four players before subbing in a 5th.
During this time, the Royals employed a "2-2" zone and (believe it or not) actually outscored the Eagles by 8 points despite playing shorthanded!
St. Mary's, however, ended up prevailing in the game by a 74-65 final. In other words, the Royals were a +8 while playing with 4 players and a -17 while playing with 5......

Hey, I've seen this movie before........wasn't it called "Hoosiers"?
ReplyDeleteHope this will bring attention to terrible reffing that we have in High School league. I had watched league for several years and it looks like it is getting worst. The refs made many bad salls at seccond OT at Junior Cameron game, which decided winners. Also at SJAM tournament past weekend it was really hard to watch their mistakes, even experienced coaches as FHCI, had difficult tame to understand their calls for offensive fouls. let make more comments and reports hopefuly it wil increase reffing quality
ReplyDeleteI played that game for the Ross Royals and the reffs were home cooking. The reffs need too call it both ways, even if the other team is down one.
