The Resurrection Phoenix swept the St. Mary's Eagles in two huge matchups in the D8 senior and junior leagues, respectively. That said, both games were close and the Phoenix had some rallying to do in the second half to earn the Ws.
In the senior game, Resurrection trailed by 10 points (38-28) but rallied to hold a 52-51 lead with under 2:00 to go. After missing the front end of a 1-and-1 one trip earlier, Rez's John Moi made 1-of-2 free throws the next time down to push the lead to two.
Alex Thompson missed an open jumper for the Eagles that could have tied it with about :30 to play in regulation. On the ensuing rebound, a lose ball scramble resulted in a Rez 3-on-1 break where Jeff Rodrigues put home an "and-one" layup and converted the FT to bring the game to its final margin, 56-51.
Starting guard Tyler Schneider did not play for the Phoenix due to injury.
This puts the Phoenix in first place in the D8 standings (if you include the head to head tiebreak). Meanwhile, the St. David Celtics' loss to Doyle may loom even larger down the road, when you consider that the three "preseason favourites" have split the 3 games between them......but St. David has the extra loss to Doyle in there, and sits behind third place St. Benedict in the standings.
In the junior game, guard Alphonso Ellis scored 25 of his 30 points in the second half as Resurrection rallied from an 8-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat St. Mary's 59-54.
