From Mark Bryson's HS Sports Blog's "weekly top 10" feature:
Alphonso Ellis, Resurrection: The Grade 10 student is a fast learner. He didn’t even play basketball last year, but has made an immediate impact with the Phoenix junior boys squad. He tallied 25 second-half points as Rez rallied from an eight-point, fourth-quarter deficit to edge St. Mary’s. He finished with 30 points and became the first D8 player (junior or senior) to hit that mark in the league play this season. He is also an excellent receiver with the Phoenix football team.
Rachael Urosevic, KCI: The fifth-year point guard capped her high school playing days with an appearance in the Waterloo County senior girls all-star game at Bluevale. A first-team all-star and league MVP this season, she played a huge role as the Raiders finished in fourth place at the triple-A Ontario championship. As likeable as they come, she will finish school in January and plans to attend university in the fall, where she hopes to continue playing competitive hoops.
Andrew Mwangi, Resurrection: The Grade 11 student continues to improve for the senior boys basketball squad. He played a solid all-around game, scoring 10 points in the process, as the Phoenix handed the St. Mary’s Eagles their first defeat in District 8 play. Prior to that, he was averaging 12 points and 12 rebounds in two league games and three games in “The Phoenix” tournmant at Rez, where he was named to the all-star team. He is an honour roll student and a positive contributor to student life.
Laura Burnett, Rockway: The MVP of the District 8 senior girls basketball league, the Grade 12 point guard finished off her high school hoops career by playing in an all-star game against the best of District 10 in Guelph. One of the highlights of this past season for Burnett – which included a trip to OFSAA in Cornwall – was helping every player on the team score at least one basket in the CWOSSA final. Burnett, who hopes to play university ball somewhere next year, also plays volleyball and soccer for the Flames.
