Around the Horn: Friday, December 11th

Tournament Friday
Not the greatest weather out there, but the WCI/Bluevale Shootout and the Southwood Roundball Classic are set to go today.

I've been informed that Bluevale's first round game today (12:30) against Stratford St. Mike's has been cancelled due to the closure of Highway 8.

Also, with schools in Owen Sound being closed, OSCVI's 3:30 game against Orchard Park (Stoney Creek) has been shelved as well.

Owen Sound & St. Mike's will go to the consolation side. Orchard Park & Bluevale will move to the championship side.

For the Southwood Classic, looks like the teams that were coming from far away (i.e. North Bay & SSM Korah) arrived fine last night. Kitchener CI is scheduled to play Korah in the first round today.

I'll probably be heading over to one of the sites later today, depending on how the first round matchups go.

All-Star Wraps
Brant County
The Brant County all-stars travelled to Hamilton to participate in the Senior Girls basketball "Spectator Cup". This tournament features four teams (Halton, Hamilton Catholic, Hamilton Public & Brant County).

The Brant County all-stars lost their first game to Halton 74-58 (Andrea Polischuk/St. John's - 16 points). However, they rebounded to win the consolation final on Wednesday against Hamilton Public by a 65-36 score. Taylor Kwasnik of North Park led the way with 11 points.

Team Brant included: Lisa Minutillo, Holly Ryerse and Taylor Kwasnik (North Park); Hannah Burleigh (Paris); Tori & Spencer Candy (Brantfor CI); Anna Jacobs (Pauline Johnson); Meaghan Hanley (Assumption); and Erica Polidori, Andrea Polischuk and Kayla Santilli from OFSAA 4A Champ St. John's.

WCSSAA
In WCSSAA, the Record's Mark Bryson posted the game details which saw Team Black dump Team White by a 73-66 score over at Bluevale Collegiate.

Sarah Guttin (Jacob Hespeler) scored 7 points and was named player of the game for Team Black. Erin Robbins (Cameron Heights) scored 13 while Lydia Frey (Elmira) and Michelle Hudyn (Eastwood) put in 12 each.

Krista Emily Voisin (FHCI) was White's player of the game and scored 12 points. Krista VanSlingerland led the way for team White with 13, while KCI's Claire Lockhart chipped in 12.

Nice to see the charity angle as well --- the game raised around $150 for Angel Tree.

D10/D8
Don't have many details on the games which were played last week in Guelph, but I have heard that the D8 juniors and D10 seniors prevailed in these matchups. If anyone has further details or can confirm, feel free to let me know.

Brant County Results - Thursday
In Brant senior action on Thursday, all games went ahead as scheduled.

Results were: North Park 59, Paris 47; St. John's 78, Pauline Johnson 43; and Assumption 47, Brantford CI 20.

In junior action, it was North Park 72, Paris 32; St. John's 74, Pauline Johnson 31; and Brantford CI 45, Assumption 39.

Senior Standings have North Park & St. John's at 3-0, followed by Assumption (2-1), Pauline Johnson (1-2) and then Paris & BCI at 0-3.

Junior standings also have North Park & St. John's at 3-0, while Brantford CI (2-1) and Paris (1-2) currently occupy the 3rd and 4th spots. Assumption and Pauline Johnson are still looking for their first wins on the year (0-3).

Junior Ball
A nice junior ball exhibition matchup is scheduled this weekend. Ironically, two top catholic programs (Bishop Mac & Resurrection) will do battle on a Sunday over at Bishop Mac (12:30 tip time). It will be interesting to see how the Phoenix can compete with one of the deeper teams in junior CWOSSA.
