Silver Fox: Eagles Roll; Gaels & Trojans Drop First Games

All 3 CWOSSA teams were in action yesterday evening on an abbreviated first day of the annual Silver Fox basketball tournament in Hamilton.

Not all 24 teams played yesterday, but everyone's in action starting today (games, in fact, have already tipped off).  Once pool play is completed, teams will move on to another "pool play" system based upon their standing (1st, 2nd, or 3rd in their pool).

You can follow along on the tournament website:  http://silverfoxbball.blogspot.com

As for yesterday's action, the Kitchener St. Mary's Eagles put on a show and were the lone CWOSSA team to pull out a victory, defeating Oakville Loyola by a 77-48 final score.

Tesloth Simon poured in 38 points, including 28 -- yes, 28 -- in the first half alone.

St. Mary's second and final pool game will be against Thornlea, a team that moved past them in the most recent NorthPoleHoops.com "Top 25" national ranking.  The Eagles are 21st, while Thornlea sits in 19th.

Meanwhile, both North Park and Cameron Heights ended up on the losing end of their games.

The Trojans dropped a 58-48 decision to Stoney Creek's Saltfleet SS, despite a game-high 19 points from Matt Minutillo.  North Park will play Windsor's Herman SS today.

As for Cameron Heights, they went up against the Korah SS Colts of Sault Ste. Marie and their 6'11"/300lb. big man Jonah Fogg.  Fogg contributed 19 points in Korah's 64-56 victory.  Sasha Simic netted 18 for the Gaels.

That game was actually tied 54-54 with about 4:00 to go before the Colts closed on a 10-2 run.

Cameron Heights will play St. Theresa (Midland) this morning in their second pool game.

Other scores from yesterday:
Oakville Holy Trinity 64, Chatham Kent 31
Burlington Nelson 84, Hamilton Westmount 57
Cardinal Newman (StCrk) 57, Bishop Reding (Milton) 40

D8 Wednesday: Flames Wrap Up Playoff Berths & CWOSSA Spots

There was one game to talk about in both D8 junior & senior yesterday, as the league's two private schools got together for a doubleheader.

The Rockway juniors had already clinched the final playoff spot, so the result of that game wasn't going to have any impact on the final seeding.

The Flames squeaked out a 42-39 win, backed by 16 points from Isaac Regier.  Teddy Neuman had 10 for the Cavs.

On the senior side, Rockway bested Woodland 43-26, with Matt Steinman (11) and Connor Huxman (10) providing double-digit efforts.  Trent Fisher had 9 for Woodland.

Rockway will be the #6 seed in both junior and senior D8, and will also be representing the league at "A" CWOSSA next month.

Here's a look at the final standings in D8:

Junior - "A" Division1.  St. Mary's 8-1

Adidas Tri-City Top 40 Camp

Former CWOSSA star Imad Qahwash has let me know that there's a new home (online) for his Adidas Tri-City Top 40 camp.

The camp's website has just been launched, in advance of this year's junior boys' invitations being sent out (early February).

You can find the site at http://tricity40basketball.com/.

This is the third year for the Junior Boys' camp, which has had NorthPoleHoops.com in attendance since its inception.  Last year's "co-MVPs", Sasha Simic and Nedim Hodzic, both made an appearance at the NPH Platform event last month.

The Record: Elgadi Has Blossomed as a Badger

via @KitWatGuy (Twitter) - Elgadi (L) and
former WCI teammate Jacob Ranton
Here's a neat article by the Record's Mark Bryson on WCI ('13) grad Dani Elgadi, who is among the top rookies in not only the OUA, but the CIS.

An interesting sidenote is that, as Bryson notes, Elgadi's really come on over the past couple of years in terms of his development.  He was an "8th ish" man for the 2010 WCSSAA champion (and CWOSSA silver medalist) WCI junior team, proving that hard work can indeed pay off.

From a basketball standpoint, Dani Elgadi is doing far better in his first year of university than he was in first year of high school.

The Waterloo native is the highest scoring freshman and top first-year rebounder in Ontario University Athletics heading into Wednesday's road game against the University of Waterloo Warriors. He has averaged 30.4 minutes of floor time in 15 games and leads the Badgers in scoring (17.2 per game), rebounds (10.1 per game) and blocks (1.3 per game).

It's been a remarkable debut for the six-foot-seven forward who was a self-described "unathletic twig" when he was cut from the junior team during his Grade 9 year at Waterloo Collegiate Institute.

His strong play at Brock has led to speculation he'll receive consideration later this winter when it comes time to select the OUA's top rookie performer.

"Sure, I'd obviously like to be considered for rookie of the year but what I really want is to become a player that my teammates are proud of, my coach is proud of and someone I can be proud of. And I'll get that by working hard and continuing to improve," said Elgadi on Monday.

"To some degree, I'm a little bit surprised with the success I've had but I worked hard all summer and I've been training like crazy with my coaching staff and teammates."

The Badgers (2-14) are coming off a forgettable weekend of OUA play that saw them crushed twice in a 24-hour span by the visiting Lakehead Thunderwolves. Elgadi had 12 rebounds and a season-low six points in a 78-68 loss on Saturday and then had nine rebounds and nine points in a 99-57 blowout on Sunday.

The Thunderwolves played a physical game to slow down Elgadi, who admits he needs to add bulk to his 195-pound frame if he's going to achieve one of his goals of being recognized as one of the top players in Canadian University Sport.

"One thing I have to learn now that my name is getting out there a bit more, teams are going to start scouting me harder and that's something I'll have to get used to," he said.

"They know my strengths and weaknesses so I have to continue to get better and stronger because everybody is so much stronger at this level and it's something I need to improve on or they can completely shut me down."

Elgadi was dominant in the two games leading up to the Lakehead letdown, scoring 23 points and nine rebounds against Windsor and 31 points and 14 rebounds against Laurier.

Brock's first-year head coach Charles Kissi expects big things from Elgadi in the coming years as he attempts to rebuild the Brock program into a national power. The Badgers have twice won the Canadian championship, most recently in 2008 over Acadia.

"I expected him to do big things for us this year but maybe not this much. He's been tremendous for us and he represents what we're doing here in terms of building this program back to a national contender. He's the cornerstone," said Kissi.

"He makes mistakes obviously but he's learning and growing from them and that's what this year is about. . . . I want this year to be a great learning experience and I'm OK with losing a lot of games if it means we're going to achieve our goals in the future."

Elgadi had initially committed to play at the University of New Brunswick alongside Kitchener native and good friend Javon Masters but those plans fell through during the summer because of an admissions issue. Suddenly a "free agent," he considered offers from several universities before committing to Kissi, a coach who last year served as an apprentice under Toronto Raptors head coach Dwayne Casey.

Elgadi expects to see plenty of familiar faces in the crowd on Wednesday at UW's Physical Activities Complex. Among them, he hopes, will be WCI basketball coach/guidance counsellor Craig Nickel, who Elgadi calls his "basketball mentor."

"He's a big part of my life and I probably wouldn't be on a university basketball team without him. He's sculpted me into the player I am right now and I'm honoured to have him in my life and he'll always be part of my life," said Elgadi.

Brock will attempt to snap a six-game winning slide against UW, which is on a four-game skid and is also 2-14 in the OUA West standings. Brock defeated UW by an 80-75 decision in their first regular-season meeting on Nov. 30 in St. Catharines.

St. Benedict, Resurrection & St. John's At Ontario All-Catholic This Weekend

The 37th Annual Fr. Kennedy Memorial Invitational: All Catholic Ontario Junior Boys Basketball Tournament will be taking place this coming weekend (February 1st and 2nd) in Hamilton.

Three CWOSSA teams will be present in the 16-team field, including two of my top three ranked junior teams --- #1 Cambridge St. Benedict, and #3 Kitchener Resurrection.  Brantford St. John's will also be participating.

Tournament favourites would include St. Michael's College (GTA #2) and Jean Vanier of Richmond Hill (GTA #3).  That said, those two teams both have losses on their resumés to D8 teams, with St. Benedict having beat Jean Vanier in tournament play, while Kitchener St. Mary's edged St. Michael's College way back in a November tournament.

Here's a look at the first round of the draw:

Bishop Reding (Milton) vs. Cardinal Newman (St Crk)
St. Benedict (Cambridge) vs. Bishop Ryan (Hamilton)

Notre Dame (Welland) vs. Brebeuf (Hamilton)
Notre Dame (Burlington) vs. Jean Vanier (Richmond Hill)

St. John's (Brantford) vs. Holy Trinity (Oakville)
Resurrection (Kitchener) vs. St. Thomas More (Hamilton)

Assumption (Burlington) vs. Cathedral (Hamilton)
St. Michael's College (Toronto) vs. Bishop Tonnos (Ancaster)

CWOSSA: A Look Ahead

We're about a month away from CWOSSA, but it's never too early to start thinking about the teams that may be in attendance at this year's championship.

Here's a "rough idea" of who might be at the AA, AAA, and AAAA championships:

AA
Like the girls' championship was this past fall, boys' "AA" CWOSSA will be a 6-team, two pool event.

Pool "A" - D 1&7 #1, D4 #1, and D9
Pool "B" - D10 (or WCSSAA), D1&7 #2, and D5

Starting on the junior side, St. Mary's of Owen Sound is leading the way in D1&7 (BAA), while there's certainly a couple teams that appear to be in the running for the "#2" spot in Pool B:  Saugeen, John Diefenbaker and Sacred Heart are currently all boasting 5-1 BAA records.

Simcoe (5-1) looks to be the clear favourite in D9, over the other "AA" school, Delhi (0-5).

Bishop Mac (or Lourdes) would be favoured over WCSSAA's Southwood in their play-in game, though the Sabres have been improving as of late.  Paris or Pauline Johnson would represent the D5.

Westside (7-0) currently leads the junior D4 league, but they're "AAA", so Centre Dufferin (6-2) is currently D4 #1.

Things are similar in senior, except OSCVI (8-0) and St. Mary's (6-2) are currently leading the charge in the BAA, while Wellington Heights sits 1st at 7-1 in the D4 circuit.

All others look the same; I'd certainly be shocked if, as usual, the winning school isn't from D10 (the Bishop Mac Celtics have held down a spot in my top 10 ranking all season).

AAA: Junior
Pool A: WCSSAA #1, D10 #1, D4 vs. D1&7
With the top five teams in the WCSSAA junior league being AAA schools, I'm sure that the playoffs will have a lot to say about the two WCSSAA schools that qualify. Currently, Preston looks like they should be able to get one of the berths and are my favourite to be the top AAA qualifier. D10 #1 (St. James) and either Westside or West Hill will take the other berth.

Pool B: D5 #1, WCSSAA #2, D9 vs. D8
North Park (undefeated in league) has the inside track from D5, while the KCI Raiders are currently in line for a CWOSSA berth from WCSSAA; I see them as likely the #2 WCSSAA qualifier when it's said and done. St. David will (likely) take on Holy Trinity in the qualifier.

AAA:  Senior
Pool A:  WCSSAA #1, D10 #1, D4 vs. D1&7
The KCI Raiders seem to have the inside track to the WCSSAA #1 spot, by virtue of a couple key regular season wins (such as WCI).  D10 #1 will be a very strong St. James team, while D4 #1 (Westside) will play BAA's West Hill for the other berth.

Pool B:  D5 #1, WCSSAA #2, D9 vs. D8
St. John's and North Park went to overtime the last time they met, and should battle for the D5 title and the league's lone "AAA" berth.  Galt, despite losing to Glenview Park, appears to be in position to snag the #2 spot, while the other berth (play-in game) will likely be between Monsignor Doyle and Holy Trinity (Simcoe).

AAAA: Junior
Only four teams at "AAAA" CWOSSA this year, with 2 from WCSSAA, 1 from D8 and the other from either D5 or D10.

Right now, WCI & SJAM look like the class of the WCSSAA league, with Cameron Heights and Grand River within striking distance with a playoff "upset".

JF Ross is currently #1 in D10, but don't discount either Orangeville (6-6) or Centennial (6-5) in what's been a wild year over in Guelph.  The D10 qualifier should be able to get past D5 school Assumption in the play-in game.

The favourite to take the AAAA title will come from the D8 league, where the top three teams in the league are also my top three ranked teams in CWOSSA.  St. Mary's, St. Benedict and Resurrection will be vying to carry the D8 banner.

AAAA: Senior
In senior, the three WCSSAA teams at the top of the standings (CHCI/GRCI/SJAM) will need the playoffs to determine which two of them will qualify through to CWOSSA.  Expect a very intense "semifinal Saturday" game between the #2 and #3 teams, most likely SJAM and Grand River.

St. Mary's appears to be a virtual lock to get in from D8, having not had a league game within single digits to this point in the season.

As for D5 (Assumption) vs. D10 (likely JF Ross)?  The Royals would certainly be favoured there, but the senior Lions are no pushover so it should be competitive.

WCSSAA Junior: Playoff Possibilities

Like I did yesterday in the senior circuit, today I take some "exam time" to, er, EXAMine the junior boys' basketball playoff scenarios.

Again, let's start at the top of the standings:

Seeds 1-4:  First Round Byes
Both the SJAM Highlanders (10-0) and WCI Vikings (9-1) have already clinched first-round byes for the playoffs.  Both teams will be favoured to win their remaining two games (SJAM - BCI/SSS; WCI - GRCI/JHSS), and should finish "1-2".

Grand River and Cameron Heights will likely finish "3/4" in the standings; Cameron Heights does own the tiebreaker so one more win for the Gaels will lock up the #3 spot.  The Rens should finish 4th.

Seeds 5-6:  Home Qualifying Round Games
Bluevale, who have SJAM and Galt left on their schedule, look to have the inside track towards finishing 5th in the WCSSAA standings.

Jacob Hespeler, who play two teams at the opposite ends of the standings --- Elmira (1-9) and WCI (9-1) --- should pick up the win they need to stay in the 6th position.

Seeds 7-12
Then it gets interesting, with the rest of the WCSSAA junior teams....here's how I see things "playing out":

PHS (5-5): @WODSS, vs. FHCI (2-0): 7-5
KCI (5-5):  @GPSS, @HHSS (1-1):  6-6
ECI (4-6): @ FHCI, @ WODSS (2-0): 6-6
GCI (4-6):  vs SSS, vs BCI (1-1):  5-7
HHSS (4-6): @CHCI, vs KCI (1-1): 5-7
SSS (4-6):  @GCI, vs SJAM (0-2):  4-8
GPSS (4-6):  vs KCI, vs CHCI (0-2):  4-8

Preston should be able to defeat both WODSS & FHCI, who are a combined 1-19 on the season, to finish in 7th place overall at 7-5.

Eastwood, who were 2-6 at one point (due to a tough schedule), should win their last two games as well to finish 6-6.  I see the KCI Raiders also finishing 6-6, though the Rebels would have the "head to head" edge on KCI.

The key games to keep an eye on are definitely KCI @ Glenview Park and also Southwood @ Galt.  Both certainly "could" go either way, and will be huge to determining final playoff positioning.

Here's my prediction as to how I think it "may" play out, and considering the applicable tiebreaks:

7.  Preston (7-5)
8.  Eastwood (6-6)
9.  KCI (6-6)
10.  Huron Heights (5-7)
11.  Galt CI (5-7)
12.  Glenview Park (4-8) --- H2H over SSS (4-8)

WCSSAA Senior: Playoff Possibilities

No games to recap yesterday in WCSSAA, due to the exam break, so that gives us a bit of time to sit back and take a look at the "playoff possibilities" in the 14-team WCSSAA senior league.

I'm a little late to the table in being informed that all teams will play an "11 game schedule" this year, so note that the records below will differ from what I've previously posted in standings updates, as I've eliminated the "bye wins".

Let's break it down by "sections".

Seeds 1-3:  SJAM, Cameron Heights, Grand River
These teams are all two games clear of fourth place with two games to go, and it's a pretty safe bet that none of these squads will lose both of their remaining contests.

SJAM (Bluevale/Southwood) and Cameron Heights (Huron Heights/Glenview Park) should win their two remaining games.  Grand River should as well, albeit with a higher degree of difficulty as they have two 6-3 teams left on their schedule (WCI & Eastwood).

All three teams have played each other, and are 1-1.  Cameron Heights, therefore, would take 1st on the +/-, with SJAM then taking 2nd on a "head to head" tiebreak with Grand River (3rd).

Seeds 4-8:  KCI, WCI, Eastwood, Glenview Park, Galt
Several of these teams could all end up tied with 8-4 records.  In terms of my projections:

KCI (6-3):  @ GPSS, @ HHSS = 8-3 or 7-4
WCI (6-3):  vs. GRCI, @ JHSS (1-1) = 7-4
ECI (6-3):  @ FHCI, @ GRCI (1-1) = 7-4
GCI (5-4):  vs. SSS, vs. BCI (2-0) = 7-4
GPSS (5-4):  vs. KCI, vs. CHCI = 6-5 or 5-6

The key to unlocking the puzzle will be the KCI/Glenview Park game, which would appear to be the closest of the remaining contests:

If KCI wins (KCI 8-3 & GPSS 5-6)
4.  KCI
5.  WCI (H2H wins over both Galt & ECI)
6.  ECI (Common Opponent:  beat GPSS, GCI lost to GPSS)
7.  GCI
8.  Glenview Park

If GPSS wins (KCI 7-4, GPSS 6-5)
This one is interesting.  If this happens, then KCI, WCI, ECI and Galt would all finish with 7-4 records.

WCI (2-1 record against tied teams) would take 4th position in this instance, leaving a 3-way tie between ECI, Galt and KCI.

ECI and Galt have both defeated KCI, which would actually drop the Raiders down to 7th.

Again, Eastwood's common opponent win over GPSS would be the key to placing them 5th:

4.  WCI
5.  ECI
6.  Galt
7.  KCI
8.  Glenview Park

As you can see, a pretty significant game for the Raiders against Glenview, as they could potentially drop from 4th (and a first-round bye) to 7th.

Seeds 9-12
Currently, Huron Heights (3-6) and Forest Heights (3-6) sit tied for 9th with Bluevale right behind (2-7), and the remaining three teams behind that (PHS 2-8, SSS 1-8, JHSS 1-9).

Forest Heights has the edge in schedule, with PHS remaining, a game in which they will likely be (slightly) favoured.  Huron Heights defeated FHCI by 1 in league play, so if the Trojans aren't victorious in that one, then you can flip the following:

9.  Forest Heights
10.  Huron Heights

As for the remainder, Southwood (2 games) and Jacob Hespeler (1 game left) look to be on the outside looking in as they would need a win in either of their remaining ames.  Southwood, therefore, would need to beat either Galt or SJAM to stay in the hunt for a playoff berth, while Jacob Hespeler would need to knock off WCI.

The other remaining game for Preston is Forest Heights (as mentioned above), while JHSS gets WCI.

Preston could vault over Bluevale with a win (their 3rd), while a loss to FHCI would see both BCI & PHS tied with 2 wins.  As they didn't play during the regular season, we'd have to look at common opponents:

PHS - def. GPSS & SSS (L JHSS)
BCI - def. SSS & JHSS (L GPSS)

.....which would be a wash, meaning we'd go to the +/- among common opponents (can't really speculate on that as it would depend upon remaining games).

So, my projected seeding for the WCSSAA playoffs:
1.  Cameron Heights
2.  SJAM
3.  Grand River
4.  KCI
5.  WCI
6.  Eastwood
7.  Galt CI
8.  Glenview Park
9.  Forest Hts.
10.  Huron Hts.
11.  Preston
12.  Bluevale

Of course, there's still a lot of basketball to be played and a couple of those "coin flip" games will have a significant impact on the standings.

D8: Playoff Matchups Set

Neither of the games on the D8 senior side of the slate were in doubt yesterday as St. Mary's dominated Monsignor Doyle and Resurrection cruised past St. Benedict.

In the former, St. Mary's received double-digit efforts from Avery Sutton (16), Jamari Stephenson (11) and Tesloth Simon (11) in an 88-36 win over Monsignor Doyle.  Ryan Stafford led the 'Stangs with 7, while Yaser Seyed and Sohrob Sultani had 6 each.

The win by St. Mary's was their 34th straight D8 league or playoff win; it also marked their third straight perfect D8 regular season (2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14).

The other tilt on Monday saw Resurrection got off to a fast start in a 74-42 win over St. Benedict, with Patric McGlynn contributing 26 in the win for the victors.  Spencer Marshall led the Saints with an 18-point effort.

As for the standings:

Senior - Division A
1.  St. Mary's 9-0
2.  Resurrection 7-2
3.  Mons. Doyle 5-4
4.  St. Benedict 3-6

Senior - Division B
1.  St. David 4-4
2.  Rockway 1-6
3.  Woodland 0-7

There is one game left on the schedule, a "B" Division game between Rockway and Woodland, which still means the last playoff spot isn't yet decided.  Here's the quarterfinal matchups:

(A1) St. Mary's - Bye
(A2) Resurrection - Bye
(A3) Mons. Doyle vs. (B2) RMC/WCHS
(A4) St. Benedict vs. (B1) St. David

Junior
In junior action yesterday, the CWOSSA #1 St. Benedict Saints outlasted the CWOSSA #3 Resurrection Phoenix at home in a 43-40 thriller, clinching the #2 seed in the D8 playoffs.

The game was tied 22-22 at halftime, before the Saints used a third quarter run to take a 10-point lead.  However, the Phoenix didn't go away and chipped into that deficit, trailing by 3 points with less than :30 to go.

Rez got a steal with about :15 on the clock but were unable to get anything better than a contested three-pointer which was off the mark, resulting in the final margin.

Alex Douglas led SBCSS and all scorers with 17 points, while Zubair Seyed had 9 and Carter Johnson 7 for the Saints.  Jake Rush and Prince Dang notched 9 each for Resurrection, with Ali Rashid adding 7.

In Monday's other game, Adham Eleeda scored 15 and Minas Abara added 11 as the St. Mary's Eagles dispatched the St. David Celtics 64-40.  Mason Cumming had a game-high 19 points for the Celtics.

D8 Junior Standings - A Division
1.  St. Mary's 8-1
2.  St. Benedict 7-2
3.  Resurrection 6-3
4.  St. David 3-6

D8 Junior Standings - B Division1.  Mons. Doyle 3-5
2.  Rockway 2-5
3.  Woodland 0-7

Although there is one game left (RMC/WCHS), the first-round playoff matchups have already been determined:

(A1) St. Mary's - Bye
(A2) St. Benedict - Bye
(A3) Resurrection vs. (B2) Rockway
(A4) St. David vs. (B1) Mons. Doyle

WCSSAA Friday: Results & Standings

Senior

D8 Monday: Picks

YTD 25-1 (.961)

Today marks the final regular season games for many teams in the D8 league, with some of the playoff match-ups (that will take place in over two weeks, after the exam break --- February 5th) already set.

In fact, the 4 teams playing today have already been "locked into" their playoff seeds, with one "quarterfinal game" (SDCSS @ SBCSS) already decided.  Monsignor Doyle will host either Woodland or Rockway in the other quarterfinal, with St. Mary's and Resurrection earning first-round byes.

Today's junior schedule, though, has a big game with St. Benedict (6-2) hosting Resurrection (6-2).  The winner of that game will get the #2 seed in the playoffs, along with a home semifinal game and a first-round playoff bye.

Resurrection (6-2) at St. Benedict (3-5)
My Pick:  RCSS by 20
Nothing but pride on the line here, as these two teams are locked into their playoff positions.  I look for the Phoenix, though, to end their regular season on a winning note.

Mons. Doyle (5-3) at St. Mary's (8-0)
My Pick:  SMHS by 27
Again, both of these squads are locked into their seeding, but the Eagles surely will want to wrap up another undefeated D8 season and should win this one.

Junior: Oakwood Tops Resurrection in George Brown College Tourney Final

Tournament All-Stars from Oakwood/Rez
The junior Resurrection Phoenix played this past weekend at the historic George Brown College (Casa Loma Campus) gym, a basketball "mecca" that has seen many great players grace its presence over time --- Jay Triano, Leo Rautins, Jamaal Magliore, Steve Nash, and Tracy McGrady to name a few.

Rez went 2-1, dropping the tournament championship game to Toronto Oakwood by a 70-52 score.  In the championship final, Ali Rashid had 17 points and Jake Rush added 10 for the Phoenix, while Malik Kennedy had 18 and Shaquan Barrett netted 15 for the Barons.

To advance to the championship final, Resurrection defeated Toronto's Don Bosco (73-55) in the first round, with a balanced scoring attack keyed by four players in double-figures --- 17 each from Jake Rush and Muyang Iluya, and 16 from Ali Rashid and 10 by Prince Dang.

The Phoenix then bested Mississauga's Applewood Heights 64-53 in the semifinals, with Iluya notching 27 points and Rashid adding 20 more.  Stefan Tubic had 24 for the Axemen.

Oakwood defeated Toronto Runnymede (74-44) in the other semifinal.  Full results are available on the HooptownGTA website.

Oakwood's Shaquan Barrett was named tournament MVP, while Georgi Nedyalkou was also named to the tournament all-star team for the Barons alongside Rashid & Iluya of Resurrection, and Etobicoke CI's Max Foran.

The Etobicoke Rams, coached by legendary Blue Jays announcer Jerry Howarth, took the consolation championship over Don Bosco.

Brant News: High School Boys Basketball Recap

By:  Sean Allen

Retrieved From:  Brant News

The St. John's College Green Eagles needed overtime to do it, but they finished first in the regular season for the Brant senior boys high school basketball league. The Green Eagles downed the Trojans in overtime on Thursday night, 60-56, to finish with a 9-1 record on the season.

The loss means the Trojans have to settle for third place with a 7-3 record. The Assumption College Lions finished second at 8-2.

The Lions defeated the Brantford Collegiate Institute Mustangs 66-36 on Thursday, while the Pauline Johnson Collegiate Thunderbirds downed the Paris District High School Panthers 71-30.

That means the T-Birds and Mustangs finish with identical 3-7 records. The tiebreaker for the standings is head-to-head record, followed by plus/minus points head-to-head. The T-Birds and Mustangs each defeated the other once. But because the Mustangs only defeated the T-Birds by 10 points on Dec. 10, while the T-Birds downed the Mustangs by 24 points last week, the Thunderbirds get fourth place.

The teams will face each other in the quarter-final, but Pauline Johnson will now be the host site of the game. The other quarter-final will see the Trojans play the Panthers. Those games will take place after a two-week exam break on Tuesday, Feb. 4. The semifinals, which the Lions and Green Eagles get a bye to, will take place Thursday, Feb. 6.
