Junior Purple & Gold: Host Phoenix Take Title over SJAM

MVP Ali Rashid Goes Airborne for Block vs FHCI

The CWOSSA #3-ranked Resurrection Phoenix took home the title this past weekend at the 16-team "Purple & Gold" tournament, co-hosted by Resurrection and Huron Heights SS.

The championship final was a hard-fought affair between the Phoenix and another top ranked CWOSSA junior squad, the #4 SJAM Highlanders.  After a 9-9 opening quarter, Resurrection took a 23-14 lead into halftime following a jumper in the waning seconds by Rez guard Kevin Mullings.

Tournament MVP Ali Rashid (15 points in the second half) keyed a third quarter spurt for Rez that allowed the Phoenix to take a double-digit lead (39-24) entering the fourth.  After leading by as many as 17 in the final frame, the 'Landers battled back within single digits (9 points) but that was as close as they would get in a 47-36 final.

Rashid led all scorers with 23 points on an efficient 9-of-15 effort from the field.  Joe Hunter (7),
Muyang Iluya (6 points + 10 rebounds), Kevin Mullings (4), Jake Rush (3), Prince Dang (2 + 10 rebounds) and Sahil Hotwani (2) rounded out the Resurrection scoring.

For SJAM, G/F Justin Hardy led a balanced 'Lander scoresheet with 9 points.  Devon Gallivan added 8, while Amarbir Bansal was effective inside, with 7 points and 9 rebounds.  Karan Heer (6), Nino Spasik (4) and Nicolas Milosevic (1) also scored for SJAM, who only went 7 deep as they were missing two contributors from their usual playing rotation.

In the semifinals on Saturday, Resurrection defeated Waterloo Bluevale 67-26 and SJAM got past Saltfleet (Stoney Creek) by a 47-43 final.

Saltfleet took the bronze game by a 59-10 score over Bluevale.

On the consolation side, it was four Brantford schools (North Park, St. John's, Brantford CI & Assumption) advancing to the consolation semifinals before North Park defeated St. John's in the consolation final by a 37-25 score.

First-team tournament all-stars were:  Ali Rashid (MVP), Muyang Iluya and Prince Dang from Resurrection; Justin Hardy and Devon Gallivan from SJAM; and Terry Hill from Saltfleet.

Second-team honourees were Jake Rush (RCSS), Romy Simpson (ECI), Greg Smith (BCI), Raghu Podipireddy (CHCI), and Aleks Cvrkalj (GRCI).
