Brant News: High School Boys Basketball Recap

The St. John's College Green Eagles needed overtime to do it, but they finished first in the regular season for the Brant senior boys high school basketball league. The Green Eagles downed the Trojans in overtime on Thursday night, 60-56, to finish with a 9-1 record on the season.

The loss means the Trojans have to settle for third place with a 7-3 record. The Assumption College Lions finished second at 8-2.

The Lions defeated the Brantford Collegiate Institute Mustangs 66-36 on Thursday, while the Pauline Johnson Collegiate Thunderbirds downed the Paris District High School Panthers 71-30.

That means the T-Birds and Mustangs finish with identical 3-7 records. The tiebreaker for the standings is head-to-head record, followed by plus/minus points head-to-head. The T-Birds and Mustangs each defeated the other once. But because the Mustangs only defeated the T-Birds by 10 points on Dec. 10, while the T-Birds downed the Mustangs by 24 points last week, the Thunderbirds get fourth place.

The teams will face each other in the quarter-final, but Pauline Johnson will now be the host site of the game. The other quarter-final will see the Trojans play the Panthers. Those games will take place after a two-week exam break on Tuesday, Feb. 4. The semifinals, which the Lions and Green Eagles get a bye to, will take place Thursday, Feb. 6.

Senior: Weekly CWOSSA "Top 10" Power Ranking

A bit of a shuffling of the deck in this week's CWOSSA "Top 10" Senior Power Ranking.

Though the St. Mary's Eagles remain at #1, they're now followed by the JF Ross Royals, who pulled out a gutty win over Grand River in the quarterfinals of the Saints Invitational.

A couple of other cosmetic changes, with the SJAM Highlanders moving up one spot and the Cameron Heights Golden Gaels down one thanks to the 'Landers win over the Gaels in their home tournament final on Saturday.

The St. Mary's Eagles have soared into the top 25 in NorthPoleHoops.com's latest ranking of the top high school teams in the country.

The Eagles actually cracked the top 20 right on the nose, at #20.  They're also among the top 10 Ontario teams on the list, sitting in 10th.

WCSSAA Junior: Top Teams Continue To Win

The rich got richer on Thursday afternoon in the WCSSAA junior league.

The league's top 5 teams all posted wins -- and most of them weren't close.  The average margin of victory for those teams yesterday was a solid 31.8 PPG.

Here's the recap:

Galt 47, Forest Hts. 36
Hayden Merkir had 17 and Numaan Unia chipped in 11 as the Ghosts did their playoff hopes a favour with a road win at FHCI.  Riley Anderson had 17 to lead the way, as usual, for Forest Heights.

Cameron Hts. 68, Southwood 37
Jake Dekker netted 18 in the win for Cameron Heights, while Isaiah (13) and Noah (7) Robinson were the top Southwood scorers.

Bluevale 53, KCI 29
Greg Smith had 13 and Will Scheffler was also in double-figures with 12 for the Knights, who moved to 7-3 with the win.  Sam McLean had 13 to top the Raiders.

WCI 53, Preston 44
A balanced attack helped WCI get the win here, with four Vikes scoring 10 points each --- Shanif Hirani, Griffin Floto, Aaron Grubb, and Keegan Paleshi.  Mitchell Devonish had a game-high 15 for the Panthers, while Jaskaran Attwal added 14.

SJAM 67, Glenview Park 41
The 'Landers easily remained unbeaten by taking out Glenview on Thursday.  Justin Hardy notched 20 with Nik Milosevic adding 17; Peter Hastings-Clarke had 15 for the Panthers.

Eastwood 57, Elmira 35
With an easier finishing schedule, the Rebels (who entered play 2-6) should be able to finish 6-6.  They got it started with a win over EDSS, thanks to Prabhjit Sangha's 14 points and 10 more by Raghav Sharma.  Colin Wideman had 7 for the Lancers.

Big win for the Hawks on Thursday with Eric Purdy scoring 16 points and Jared Beeksma adding 10.  Kuel Thomas and Ben Jenkins had 11 each for Huron.

Aleks Cvrkalj, one of WCSSAA's top scorers, had another solid outing on Thursday with 19 points, while Abdei Hamad had 14.  Jason Holmes had 18 to lead the way for the Crusaders.

WCSSAA Senior: Perfect Day....Sort Of

Well, I didn't get a pick wrong in WCSSAA play yesterday.

Then again, I didn't get "all of them" right --- having somehow omitted a pick for the Huron Heights - Galt CI game.  I would have taken the Ghosts in that one, but it won't count in the official recordkeeping.

Anyways, that GCI-HHSS game turned out to be possibly the game of the day, with the Ghosts surviving at home by a 72-64 score.  TJ Lall poured in 38 points in that one, while Scott Holton added 10 more for the Ghosts.

Nathaniel Ernst-Finnie (17) and Darcy Jacobs (14) topped the Huron scoresheet.

Norfolk News: Titans Take Silver Sneaker

Jordan Hill and his Holy Trinity Titans teammate knew they made history.
                          

When Holy Trinity opened in 2001, a rivalry with Simcoe Composite School immediately began.

 

That rivalry was probably at its most fierce on the basketball court.

                          

On Tuesday, the two schools created a new chapter as the Titans captured the inaugural Silver Sneaker trophy with a 39-33 win over the SCS Sabres.

                          

“This was a huge win,” Titans’ Jordan Hill said. “It’s the first-ever Silver Sneaker. It means a lot to win. We’re cross-town rivals and playing them we know it’s always the biggest game of the year for us. This makes it even bigger.”

                          

The Silver Sneaker will now be annually given to the winner of the Titans-Sabres head-to-head senior boys basketball battle. In the team’s first meeting, at SCS, the Titans won 48-45.

                          

“A lot of the guys had a great mentality going into it,” said Hill, who dropped in eight points. “We came into this game knowing we didn’t want them to have it (Silver Sneaker). “

                          

Hill, a Grade 12 student is very familiar with the rivalry between the two schools, and said winning the Silver Sneaker is a huge deal, even though there’s plenty of work ahead.

                          

“It (rivalry) goes on after school too,” Hill said. “There’s lots of chirping on the internet and stuff like that. I’m not involved in it. But I know the history between these two schools, especially when it comes to basketball.

                           

“Knowing that we’re the ones with this Silver Sneaker is great,” he said. “It’s great for us and the school. But we know there are bigger things ahead with the playoffs coming up. It’s nothing until we win in the playoffs.”

                          

But the win was a huge one nonetheless, especially when it comes to the standings.

                          

“We’re hoping that this win helps us out,” Hill said. “We’re now in a three-way tie for first with them and Waterford. If we win out we can have a chance at first place and home court throughout the playoffs.”

                          

Which, in all honesty somewhat surprises Hill.

                          

“At the beginning of the season I had no idea what to expect,” he said. “SCS has beat us my entire high school career. This is the first and second time we’ve beat them. It’s great to be in the hunt. But we know we still have a lot of work ahead.”

Brantford Expositor: Trojans Growing Into Playoffs

Coming into the 2013-14 senior boys basketball season, the North Park Collegiate Trojans were on a 41-game winning streak in Brant County high school play.

With a few lineup changes that included an injection of youth, coach Todd Andrew felt it was going to take some time for his team to jell.

“This group of kids that I have is fairly young,” said Andrew.

“There's only one fifth-year kid in our starting lineup. Starting a Grade 9, a couple of Grade 11s, a Grade 12 and a fifth year, the challenge was these kids have never really played together as a unit.

“I know a few of the other schools have more experience and their kids, their starting units, have not only played together in high school but in youth basketball.

“I knew the learning curve was going to be a steep one for us.”

So, how have things worked out for the Trojans?

Well, North Park did have its amazing win streak snapped at 45 games - a streak that dated back to February of 2009 and included regular season and playoff games - when it lost to St. John's College in December. But aside from that loss and another one to Assumption, the Trojans are sitting pretty with a 7-2 record and one game to go in league play.

Despite graduating several strong and experienced players, Andrew had a good nucleus to build around for this season and he knew the team would excel in at least one area.

“Defensively, we're very strong because all the kids on the court are very athletic kids,” he said. “Usually defensive matchups aren't a problem for us.

“Offensively, I think we have a couple of the city's top scorers in Matt Minutillo and Jon Dulmage. Both of those kids can put the ball in the bucket.”

Minutillo, a Grade 11 guard, and Dulmage, a fifth-year forward, are usually the offensive leaders but Grade 11 forward Ryan Timms and Grade 12 guard Andrew Silla have also been standouts.

Andrew has also worked six-foot-eight, Grade 9 forward Brandon John into the starting lineup and although John may not have as much experience as some of the others, the potential for him to be a superstar is there.

Andrew, who often uses Matt Krason and Tyarr Powell Hodges to spell the starters, has had his team play a very competitive tournament schedule, including the Court Heinbuch in Waterloo, Western's Purple and White and, later this month, the Silver Fox in Hamilton.

While those competitions will have provided the Trojans with some valuable experience, the team has also faced stiff tests as Brant County features three strong teams in North Park, St. John's and Assumption.

Assumption is the only one of those schools classified as “AAAA” for the Central Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association championships so North Park will be battling St. John's and others for the “AAA” berth.

Andrew said he knows it won't be easy.

“It's definitely going to be a challenge,” he said. “Whoever wins the (county) championship this year, it's going to be well earned.

“It all comes down to February . . . there's lots of time for teams to grow. What you get in November is distinctly different from what you get in February.

“Playoffs should be very competitive and exciting.”

Firstly, St. James took care of GCVI, 53-28.  Joey Hasson had 15 to lead the way for the Lions, while David Wesley-James had 8 to lead the Gael scoring.

The other tilt saw Bishop Mac cruise past Centennial, 58-25.  Owen Brombal (16) paced a couple of Celtics in double-figures --- grade 10s Evan Hosker and Chris Poloniato had 10 each.  Harnoor Samra had 11 for Centennial.

It always seems to be an interesting game between these two rivals regardless of their records going in.  I like Lourdes here, but given that it was a 7-point game in their first meeting, I wouldn't be surprised to see CCVI keep it close.

The Bears are better than their record would indicate, but the Lions will be too much at home today.
