Resurrection's Junior Girls and the St. Benedict Senior Girls were the final two squads to punch their tickets to this weekend's "AAAA" tournament in Waterloo.
At Resurrection, the Phoenix took on Brantford Collegiate in a battle of two teams that have been ranked in the top 3 of the CWOSSA rankings for the majority of the season. In the end, it was Rez that was victorious by a 45-24 margin, putting an end to the Colts' season.
That being said, keep an eye out for that squad next year as Brantford CI reminds me a lot of the team that the Resurrection juniors were a year ago --- very youthful, starting four grade nine players.
Down in Cambridge, the St. Benedict Saints rallied from a 16-point deficit to edge Brantford CI 53-52 in the senior CWOSSA qualifier.
After trailing by that double-digit margin early in this one, the Saints chipped away and it was a back-and-forth single digit game for the majority of the second half --- and it finished in dramatic fashion.
The Saints took a two-point lead, only to see BCI knock home a three-pointer with around :30 left to take a one-point lead. After the Mustangs regained possession, the Saints got a steal and Afifa Salaad found Kayla Leusink for a lay-in (putting SBCSS back up one and resulting in the final margin) with just :03 on the clock.
