Senior
The Rockway Flames made things interesting last night against the St. Benedict Saints, giving SBCSS all they could handle before falling by single digits, 47-39.
Kueth Geng poured in 29 points in the win, while Santo Dak added 10. Steve Veltri netted 17 and Alex Sheedy 10 for the Flames.
To nobody's surprise, the other D8 senior game on Wednesday saw Resurrection cruise past Monsignor Doyle 62-23. Cam Gibbs paced Rez with 12, while Jamie Keil added 9. Uzhair Khan and Manny Singh had 9 each for Doyle.
As far as the standings are concerned, St. Mary's has locked up 1st place, while Rez is likely to finish 2nd (unless they lose to SBCSS by 18+ in their finale on Monday). St. Benedict is looking at a 3rd place finish, while we could have an intriguing possibility play out in the race for 4th.
Of those teams, Monsignor Doyle (2-7) has the toughest game against St. Mary's, so barring something incredible, will finish at 2-8.
St. David essentially controls their own destiny at 2-7, with a home game vs. Rockway (1-8). Keep in mind, though, that the Flames did win the first time around. A second RMC win over SDCSS would create the unpleasant scenario of all three teams tied at 2-8......and a doozy of a tiebreaker (all three teams would have won 2-0 against one of the teams, and lost both games against the other)! I wouldn't want to be sorting that one out.
Junior
The three junior contests yesterday were all decided by relatively similar scores, as three of the top four teams in the standings took on teams that have been eliminated from playoff contention.
St. David defeated Woodland 57-22, backed by 11 from Dashaun Lalor and 8 by James McBride. Nathan Timmerman (9) and Shane Clarke (7) topped the WCHS scoring as usual.
St. Benedict earned a 55-26 decision over the Rockway Flames. Alan McIntosh led the way for the Saints with 12, while Simon Pudwell had a game-high 15 points for RMC.
Meanwhile, down in Cambridge, the Resurrection Phoenix overcame a slow start to defeat Monsignor Doyle 55-28. Mark Wylie (12) and Thomas Hunter (11) provided double-digit efforts for Rez, while Jason Saris led the 'Stangs with 8.
In terms of the junior standings and playoff picture, the St. Mary's Eagles (11-0) have clinched 1st, while the St. David Celtics (9-2) will finish in 2nd. Resurrection (7-4) is currently in 3rd, but have a final game against 4th place St. Benedict (6-5). The Saints only lost the first meeting by 7, so a 7+ point win would allow the Saints to leapfrog Rez in the standings for 3rd (and avoid playing the #1 CWOSSA team in the semifinals).
