Junior: Dawson Helps Eagles Soar Past JF Ross at Purple & Gold Invitational

In a battle between two teams ranked in the top 5 in my last CWOSSA "AAAA" ranking, Tim Dawson helped the St. John's Green Eagles get past the JF Ross Royals 64-48 this evening in a quarterfinal game at the Purple & Gold Invitational at Resurrection CSS.

To say Dawson was in the zone from the tip would be an understatement.  The 5-foot-10 guard went 6-for-7 from the floor in the first quarter, including 3-for-3 from behind the arc en route to 15 points in the frame.  The Royals, however, were able to maintain contact thanks in part to the efforts of Vlad Vamanu, who netted 13 in the first quarter himself (St. John's led 25-19 after one).

Dawson continued to have a hot hand in the second quarter, adding 8 more to finish with 23 in the first half; St. John's led 41-29 at the half.

JF Ross did make a run to start the second half, thanks in part to 5 quick points in the opening minute of the third quarter by forward Kristian Vande Kemp.  However, St. John's was able to reassume control of the contest late in the third (regaining a double-digit lead) and grinded things to a halt (11-8) in the fourth quarter to take the contest going away.  From a viewing perspective, the game definitely seemed closer than the final score would indicate.

Dawson finished with 31 points, even though he was shut out in the final quarter of action.  He also collected 8 rebounds and dished out 2 assists.  Cam Post added 14 points and 5 rebounds for St. John's, and Adam Peters netted 10.

For JF Ross, Vamanu had 19 points (on 8-of-10 shooting) while Vande Kemp scored 14 points before fouling out late in the fourth quarter.  Nathan Ireland had 5 points and 5 rebounds to round out the top three Ross scorers.

The Eagles will take on Kitchener Grand River in one semifinal tomorrow morning, while the Royals will play host Resurrection in a "championship side friendly" tomorrow at 1pm.
