D8 Monday: Phoenix Push Eagles, Saints Cruise Past Celtics

Yesterday in D8 Senior action, the St. Mary's Eagles maintained their league & playoff D8 winning streak although they were pushed at home by the Resurrection Phoenix, holding them off in a 76-69 victory.

Rez lead 28-27 in the first half but some hot shooting by David Nguyen (4 three-pointers) helped the Eagles to a 44-34 halftime edge.

Rez battled back in the second half, cutting the deficit to two points (57-55) by the end of the third, but would not get any closer.

Nguyen finished with 17 points (5 threes) in total.  Jermaine Lyle (11), Minas Abara (9) and Tyrick Thompson (9) rounded out the top four Eagle performers.

Rez received a game-high 24 points from Muyang Iluya and 22 more by Korbil Gany, with Ali Rashid adding 7.

The other D8 senior game on Monday saw St. Benedict get 25 points from Zubair Seyed en route to a 64-47 win over St. David.  Evan Rodenburg added 10 for the Saints, while John McElroy led the way for St. David with 15 points.

St. Mary's continues to lead the "A" division with a perfect 8-0 mark, followed by St. Benedict (6-2), Resurrection (4-4) and St. David (3-5).

Junior
In junior action on Monday, St. David handled St. Benedict by a 60-47 final, backed by 24 points from Brent Lasovich.  Daniel Douse notched 20 for the Saints in defeat.

St. Mary's outscored Resurrection 20-10 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 58-42 victory.  Jason Jaros led the way with 18 points for SMHS; Jamu Iluya also had 18 in response for Rez.

Pat Martini continued his strong play for PRDG with a 25-point effort in their 51-38 win over Monsignor Doyle.  Caleb Figueiredo had 20 for the 'Stangs.

St. Mary's (9-0) and St. David (8-1) have virtually assured themselves of home playoff games in the "A" division.  St. Benedict (5-4) and Resurrection (4-5) round out the circuit, while over in the "B" division, its PRDG (5-4) followed by Rockway (3-6), Doyle (1-8) and Woodland (0-8).
