Owen Sound Sun-Times: Scouting Pays Off For OS

Article By: Bill Walker
Retrieved From: http://www.owensoundsuntimes.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2469789

There were few surprises for the OSCVI Falcons in the era of the Internet.

With a few clicks of the mouse, defensive stopper Ben Singbeil knew he was in for a tough CWOSSA AA senior boys basketball final against Guelph's Our Lady of Lourdes Crusaders.

With high-flying Sharieff Peru and three-point specialist Mike Finoro providing the bulk of the Crusaders offence, the Falcons shutdown specialist could only spread himself so far.

It was obviously far enough as Singbeil limited Peru to just nine points and Finoro to just 13 as he took turns covering them while also pouring in a game-high 24 of his own as the Falcons downed Lourdes 55-46 Friday.

"We had quite a bit of information because there's a CWOSSA blog with lots of information and one of our alumni went to one of their games and gave us a detailed scouting report," said Singbeil, whose squad advances to its first OFSAA championships since 1994.

"I knew I had a lot of help behind me so I just made sure they didn't get an easy shot because they're both amazing shooters. I just tried to make them work harder than I had to and it worked."

OFSAA runs March 8 to 10 in Windsor.

Kevin Bunn added 16 points for the Falcons, while pulling in several tough rebounds in traffic.

"I just felt like I wanted it more than anyone else and I just went for the ball," said Bunn. "I started off a little cold but I just kept shooting and not hesitating and things turned around."

Singbeil needs an assignment to keep his focus as he had an off game in the semifinals. But teammate Matt Monk picked up the slack with 16 points in a 69-45 win over Palmerston's Norwell District Redmen.

Curt Gibbons added 10 points as did Singbeil.

Lourdes beat the Kincardine District Knights 62-48 in the other semifinal.

Steve Young had 21 points for Kincardine.

OSCVI's junior didn't have the same good luck Friday as the squad fell 80-40 in the semifinals to Guelph's Bishop MacDonell Celtics. Game details were unavailable.

The Celtics went on to down the host Sacred Heart Crusaders 73-31 to win the junior championship.

Brennan Senra led Sacred Heart with 16 points while Ruttan had nine.

"Sticking with them in the first quarter showed us that if we were a little deeper we might have been able to run the game a little longer," said Crusaders coach Darryl Striukas. "Bishop Mac is a top quality team, not just in CWOSSA but all of the province. I'm proud of the effort they gave through the entire game."

Sacred Heart beat Norwell 52-35 in the semifinals. Senra had 18 points, while Ruttan added 12 and Ryne Weppler chipped in with 11.

There is no OFSAA tournament for juniors.

AAAA CWOSSA Finals: Knights Top Ross in Championship

The Bluevale Knights were able to top the John F. Ross Royals from Guelph 46-38 in yesterday's AAAA championship game.

This continued the trend at Resurrection on Saturday ---- all semifinal and final games were won by the "visiting" team on the scoreboard and the team seated to the right of the scorers table.

The game was a bit of a slugfest throughout, with a lot of tight defensive play. The Royals did their best to contain BCI star Stefan Cvrkalj, but centre Andrew Beney was able to assert himself against Ross' slightly undersized front line.

Bluevale led the whole way, but Ross maintained contact. In fact, things might have been different had the Royals converted some of their missed layups --- yes, many were contested --- but I counted about 8 of them myself.

Early in the fourth quarter, Ross' seldom used big man Drew Padovan scored on a nice turnaround move to cut the Bluevale lead to 6 points.

The teams would go back and forth (with little scoring) over the next 3:00 and the Knights held a 42-36 lead with 4:00 to go.

In fact, the score would remain that for almost another two minutes of game clock until Ross' star Ryan Cook fouled of the game with 2:16 to go. Bluevale's Stefan Cvrkalj made 1-of-2 free throws to give the Knights a 7 point lead ---- but Joel Mohr came right back on the other end with 2 and make it a 43-38 game.

Unfortunately for JF Ross, that would be the final basket for them in the contest. They had a ton of three-point attempts down the stretch but none would drop. On the other end, Bluevale's Andrew Beney put in a wide-open layup in the final minute and Fraser Voll tacked on 1-of-2 free throws to give the Knights the 8 point final margin.

(Andrew) Beney pumped in 25 points while Cvrkalj added 12 in the victory. Ross' quick-as-lightning guard Shamlo Saeed had 10 points and Blake Linthwaite added 9. Ryan Cook found himself in foul trouble and was not the factor he has been offensively for Ross.

He did, however, miss what could have been a huge putback dunk off of a rebound in the first half. Definitely brought back some memories for Ross fans of his D10 finals high-flying act where he took off from just a couple feet inside the free-throw line and dunked over a Centennial defender ---- only to be called for a charge.

As for where to rank these teams at the upcoming 18-team OFSAA championships?

The Knights in my eyes are looking at a 12-13 seed or so. Ross will probably be a 16-18. Of course, it all depends on who actually qualifies, so all this is pure speculation at this point.

Congrats to both the Knights (on their championship) and the Royals for qualifying for OFSAA for the first time I believe since the mid-to-late 1990s.

AAAA CWOSSA Finals: Rez Repeats as Junior Champs

The Resurrection Phoenix captured their second consecutive CWOSSA "AAAA" junior boys basketball crown by holding off the WCI Vikings 42-39 in a thrilling championship final at Resurrection last night.

This marked the third consecutive year that a D8 school has won the AAAA championship (St. Mary's 2008, Resurrection 2009 & 2010). WCI was playing to end WCSSAA's 5 year championship drought at AAAA (Forest Heights, 2005).

The game was very tight throughout. The Vikes took a one-point lead to halftime after Rez's Patrick Zrebiec hit a turnaround jumper off a rebound at the buzzer.

The Phoenix, who have been a second half team all season, continued that trend in this one. After the Vikes had a 3 point lead, clutch shooting by Cory Kenning and Alphonso Ellis allowed the Phoenix to take an 8 point lead with 3:30 to go in the contest.

And that's where it started to get interesting.

The Vikes began to put some pressure on the Phoenix and caused a couple of turnovers. In addition, WCI big men Jeremy Scott and Malcolm Piazza asserted themselves inside for a couple easy baskets.

Two Jacob Ranton free throws with under :30 to play actually tied the game at 39-39.

On the ensuing Resurrection possesion, Rez guard Alphonso Ellis drove the lane while being fouled --- hitting a tear drop runner that took a second to bounce in --- and giving Resurrection a 41-39 lead with :11 to go.

The free throw was missed and the rebound came to WCI guard Jacob Ranton in the corner. He was double-teamed by two Rez players who made the mistake of getting a bit too close and fouling with just :06 on the clock.

In the one-and-one situation, Ranton missed the front end and the rebound was secured by Resurrection's Zrebiec, who was a rebounding and defensive machine on this night. He was then fouled and made the front-end of his one-and-one with :05 to play. After missing the second free throw, WCI's Adam Anagnostopoulos corraled the loose ball and heaved a prayer from beyond halfcourt that was long enough but not quite on line ---- giving Rez their second straight AAAA title.

Ranton was WCI's top scorer with 11 points, while Scott added in 9 points.

Ellis had 17 points while Kenning added 12 and about 5 blocks.

Speaking of Rez, it appears as though the rebirth of their midget basketball (grade 9s who do not make junior) team has paid dividends --- 7 members of this year's team (including 2 starters!) played midget ball last year, developed, and were able to contribute to this year's junior team.

Rez will now set their sights on becoming the first ever school to win three consecutive "AAAA" CWOSSA junior basketball titles. KCI (04 & 05) is the only other repeat champion.

AAA CWOSSA Finals: Royals Complete Dream Season

The Centre Dufferin Royals of Shelburne captured their first ever CWOSSA boys' basketball championship in school history by defeating the Jacob Hespeler Hawks of Cambridge 47-30 in yesterday's AAA final at Preston HS.

The #3 seeded Hawks had also never won a boys' CWOSSA title so we were guaranteed a first-time champ in this one.

Marco Zanette (whose brother, Carlo, is also a key contributor on the team) poured in 23 points in the victory while Doug Costanzo added 9 points.

James Roberts had 12 for the Hawks; Jason Quiring added 5 points.

Things look good for both these programs heading into the future --- and keep an eye out for those above names in the senior ranks.

AAA CWOSSA Finals: Trojans Take Senior Title

The #2 KCI Raiders lost a heartbreaking 62-56 decision in overtime to the #1 North Park Collegiate Trojans of Brantford in the championship final.

The Trojans entered the tournament as the decisive favourite but held off #5 St. David (by one) in the semifinals before holding off the Raiders in OT.

Arben Kalaba, in his last high school basketball game, poured in 34 points for KCI. Graham Notar-McLean added 9.

For the Trojans, Dave Eves had 21 points and Cale McDonald 19.

The Trojans will advance as the CWOSSA rep to the "AAA" OFSAA basketball tournament in Kingston from March 8th to March 10th.

Centennial Knocks off Bluevale at "AAAA" CWOSSA

***See Below Posts for More CWOSSA Results***

Not so fast Bluevale.

The CCVI Spartans knocked off Bluevale 42-39 in the opening pool game of CWOSSA AAAA at Resurrection.

Bluevale's Stefan Cvrkalj missed a contested three-pointer at the buzzer that would have tied it.

CCVI's Robert House led Centennial with 14 points. Jay Francis (9), Serge Khayipangi (8), Adrian Varilla (6), Shawn Mason (4) and Andrew Ellis (1) were the others on the scoresheet.

Cvrkalj led BCI with 15. Perrin Smith had an excellent game off the bench with 13 points (3 threes). Andrew Beney was held in check (4 points), while Karsten Beney (3), Adam Zack (2) and Drew Ballak (2) were the other Bluevale scorers.

Bluevale now plays a "must-win" game against Resurrection this evening (7:30pm). Lose that and they would be eliminated from CWOSSA.

"A" Junior CWOSSA: Raiders Take 2nd Title in 3 Years

The Host Walkerton DSS Raiders came away with their second CWOSSA junior boys' "A" title in the past three years, defeating Port Dover District High School 51-38 in the championship game.

The host Raiders pushed a close game in the third quarter to double digits and never looked back en route to the victory.

JD West was his usual solid self for Walkerton in the victory.

In a thrilling semifinal, Port Dover knocked off Kitchener Rockway by a 41-40 final score.

More on this (and Waterford's victory) to follow.

Senior A CWOSSA: Waterford Wins, Heads Back to OFSAA

The Waterford Wolves have repeated as senior "A" CWOSSA Champions.

The Wolves knocked off Rockway Mennonite from Kitchener 63-48 in their semifinal, and then knocked down 9 threes in the championship game to defeat the host school, Walkerton DSS.

In the semifinal, Mike Couperus had 20 points and Aaron Hall added 13.

Against WDSS, the Wolves' balanced attack was led by Gary Hill-Stone who had 19 while Couperus and Paul Malcolm had 17 each.

"I'm speechless. I'm humbled -- these boys were able to pull it off ," head coach Dan Avey told the
Simcoe Reformer.

"Every game but two this season we've been able to win by 10 or more points. To see the composure and growth of these young men throughout the year, it's very humbling."

Waterford has advanced to the "A" OFSAA Championships in Sturgeon Falls that start up in about ten days' time.

For more on the wins, please see Jacob Robinson's article in the Simcoe Reformer.

Updates Please

I can't be everywhere at once so please send me your updates from AA, AAA and AAAA CWOSSA.

I'll be swinging by AAAA for a couple of big pool games later today.

Good luck to all participating teams!

Rez Juniors Hard Hit by Illness

This is becoming a yearly tradition in AAAA junior CWOSSA.

A year after the JF Ross Royals were badly hit by a flu bug (and promptly lost both of their opening round games), the same thing may be happening to the RCSS Phoenix.

Rez was missing 7 (yes, seven) players---including 3 starters---due to illness at this afternoon's practice.

Stay tuned to this tomorrow, but this could be a big break for the other clubs in their pool.

Speaking of those Ross Royals, they are first up for the Phoenix tomorrow at 2:00pm.

CWOSSA AAAA Senior Preview

Like junior, the AAAA Senior CWOSSA Championships will take place over at St. Mary's (Pool B Friday) and Resurrection CSS in Kitchener (Pool A Friday, Semifinals & Championship Game Saturday).

Previous AAAA Champions:
2009: SJAM (over Centennial)
2008: Centennial (over Forest Hts.)
2007: Centennial (over SJAM)
2006: KCI (over Grand River)
2005: WCI (over KCI)

Designated Pools
Pool A - Centennial, Bluevale, Resurrection
Pool B - St. John's, SJAM, JF Ross

Participating Team Capsules:

Bluevale CI Knights - Waterloo (12-0 WCSSAA; WCSSAA Playoff Champion - WCSSAA #1)
Previous CWOSSA Championships: None
Key Players: Stefan Cvrkalj, Andrew Beney, Karsten Beney, Drew Ballak.

Bluevale has a chance to end another "championship drought" here with a CWOSSA title. Judging by my poll on the right hand side, they appear to be the overwhelming favourite to capture the title.

Stefan Cvrkalj, Andrew Beney and rebounding machine Drew Ballak anchor a starting lineup that will likely create all kinds of match-up problems for the opposition. Grade 11 Perrin Smith adds extra size off the bench.

Look for the Knights to go 2-0 in pool play en route to the semifinals.

Roster:
#2 Jamie Balsillie PG 6’1” 11
#3 Stefan Cvrkalj PG 6’4” 12
#4 Andrew Beney C 6’6” 12+
#5 Fraser Voll PG 6’2” 12
#10 Nikola Jovovic SG 6’1” 11
#11 Adam Zack SG 6’1” 12
#12 Drew Ballak PF 6’2” 12
#13 Karsten Beney SG 6’2” 12
#14 Pinal Gandhi SG 6’1” 11
#21 Perrin Smith SF 6’6” 11
#22 Jeff Dinsmore PF 6’3” 12
#23 Chris Casher PF 6’3” 11

Resurrection CSS Phoenix - Kitchener (8-2 D8; D8 Playoff Champion - D8 #1)
Previous CWOSSA Championships: None
Key Players: Tyler Schneider, Andrew Mwangi, Matt Stocco, Mike Pereira.

The Phoenix went 13 deep in the D8 championship game (including 10 deep in the first quarter). They're a young bunch, but their 8 grade 11's have a bunch of CWOSSA experience from last year's junior championship run.

Up front, the Phoenix get some great energy off the bench from Mike Pereira, while Matt Stocco is an extremely hard worker on the glass. "Guard" Andrew Mwangi creates some match-up problems and is coming off a solid performance in the D8 finals.

A bunch of different guys have stepped up at times this season for Resurrection, which makes them a dangerous bunch at CWOSSA. Their 3:30 game against CCVI will likely determine the second place finisher in pool A.

Roster:
#3 Byron Ramirez, 11
#5 Jeffrey Rodrigues, 11
#11 John Moi, 11
#12 Jason Chris, 12
#21 Mike Tyler, 5th Year
#22 Jamie Keil, 11
#23 Cam Gibbs, 11
#25 Mike Pereira, 11
#33 Brandon Lee, 5th Year
#34 Andrew Mwangi, 11
#35 Tyler Schneider, 11
#43 Ryan Herron, 12
#45 Matt Stocco, 5th Year

Centennial CVI Spartans - Guelph (14-0 D10; D10 Playoff Runner Up - D10 #2)
Previous CWOSSA Championships: 2008, 2007 (AAAA); 2001 (AAA).
Key Players: Rob House, Jay Francis, Adrian Varilla, Serge Khayipangi.

The cardiac kids finished 14-0 during the regular season, then squeaked past CWDHS 54-52 in the D10 semifinals before losing to JF Ross in the championship game.

With a ton of fifth year players (Rob House, Jay Francis, Adrian Varilla among others) looking to end their careers on a high note, you can be sure that the Spartans won't just go out and roll over for the opposition.

The Spartans have fared well against some of their CWOSSA opposition; their most notable win was a victory over SJAM at the Forest City Shootout in early February.

Roster:
3 Peter Miller F 6’2” 12
4 Dan Robinson G 5’10” 12
10 Eric Rasavong G 5’8” 11
11 Chris Bratusa G 5’6” 11
15 Shawn Mason G 5’10” 12
20 Cam Baker F 6’4” 12
22 Noor Rai G 5’10” 12
23 Serge Khayipangi G/F 6’0” 11
24 Rob House F 6’5” 12+
25 Adrian Varilla G 5’6” 12+
32 Jay Francis F 6’3” 12+
33 Andrew Ellis F 6’3” 11
34 Nawid Sahak F 6’1” 12

Sir John A. Macdonald Highlanders - Waterloo (11-1 WCSSAA; WCSSAA Playoff Runner-Up - WCSSAA #2)
Previous CWOSSA Championships: 2009 (AAAA); 2006 (AAA)
Key Players: Jake Robinet, Edem Ame, Ben Reyhani, Kwame Botchway.

The defending champ Highlanders will be looking to redeem themselves here at CWOSSA. With sharp-shooting Ben Reyhani and powerful interior presences in Edem Ame and Jake Robinet, the 'Landers have the capability to play with anyone.

I look for them to advance to the semifinals and I think they have an outside shot at advancing back to the OFSAA championships.

Roster:
#1 Derek Trinh guard 11 5’7”
#5 Brian Reiter guard 12 6’
#14 Edem Ame guard 11 6’
#15 Jordan James guard 12 5’7”
#20 Ben Reyhani guard 11 6’
#21 Kwame Botchway forward 12 6’1”
#24 Matthias Hamm forward 12 6’3”
#25 George Makres guard 11 5’11”
#31 James Butler forward 12 6’2”
#32 Jahna Lampert guard 12 5’10”
#33 Jake Robinet forward 12 6’7”
#42 Scott Breadner forward 12 6’1”
#50 Muhammad Khalid forward 11 6’4”

St. John's College Green Eagles - Brantford (8-2 D5; D5 Playoff Runner-Up - D5 #1)
Previous CWOSSA Championships: 2008, 1993, 88 (AAA).
Key Players: Joe Dalia, JR Gallarza, Shawn Hill

St. John's looks on paper to be the third place team in Pool B, but don't count out the Eagles. They came within single digits of North Park in their D5 finals game, and might be able to squeeze out a first round victory. They don't have the size that SJAM & JF Ross have, however, so they'll have to do a great job cleaning up the defensive boards.

Joe Dalia and JR Gallarza lead the way for SJC.

Roster:
#4 Joe Dalia G 5’10 12
#5 Brett Burleigh G 5’10 12
#10 Andrew Clawson G 5’9 11
#11 J.R Gallarza F 6’3 12
#12 Dylan Piette G 5’10 12
#13 Tyler Hinds G 5’8 11
#14 Matt Kusnierz F 6’1 11
#15 Kyle Sewell G 5’11 12
#21 Shawn Hill F 6’2 12
#22 Matt Digout F 6’3 11
#23 Justin Chan G 5’10 12

John F. Ross CVI Royals - Guelph (10-4 D10; D10 Playoff Champions - D10 #1)
Previous CWOSSA Championships: 1996, 95, 84, 81 (AAA).
Key Players: Ryan Cook, Brad Crnkovic, Shamlo Saeed.

The Royals are flying high after their victory over Centennial in the D10 finals. Shamlo Saeed stepped up with 23 in that victory, though usual high scorers Ryan Cook and Brad Crnkovic were held in check.

Like Resurrection, Ross is young (8 grade 11's) and deep (10-11 man rotation). We'll see if that helps them advance to the semifinals and possibly OFSAA this weekend.

Roster:
#3 Brad Crnkovic Guard 6'1" 12
#10 Owen Moynihan Guard 5' 11" 11
#11 Wil de Groot Guard/Forward 6'1" 11
#15 Ryan Cook Forward 6'4" 12
#21 Joel Mohr Guard/Forward 6'1" 12
#23 Evan Karl Forward 6'3" 11
#25 Blake Linthwaite Forward 6'3" 12
#32 Trey Larue Forward 6'1" 11
#33 Shamlo Saeed Guard 5'10" 11
#44 Jack Cornett Guard 6'2" 11
#50 Dave Schwan Centre 6'6" 11
#55 Drew Padovan Forward 6'4" 11

Commentary:

I'll agree with the fans on the right who say that Bluevale enters as the favourite. I think the second OFSAA berth is completely up for grabs. Resurrection & JF Ross are playing great basketball right now, but Centennial & SJAM have the CWOSSA experience and appear to be the stronger clubs on paper. It will be interesting to see what shines through......

Projections

Pool A -- Bluevale 2-0; RCSS/CCVI 1-1; RCSS/CCVI 0-2.

Pool B -- SJAM/JFR 2-0; SJAM/JFR 1-1; SJC 0-2.

Team By Team Previews:

Waterloo Collegiate Vikings (8-4 WCSSAA RS; WCSSAA Champions - WCSSAA #1)
Past CWOSSA Junior Championships: 2003 (AAAA)
Key Players: Jacob Ranton, Malcolm Piazza, Alex Anagnostopoulos, Zach Totzke, Jeremy Scott

The Waterloo CI Vikings started and ended their WCSSAA season with a bang. In December, they took out the Forest Heights Trojans in their first league game ---- creating some immediate buzz about their potential. However, after a couple of mid-season losses (HHHS, CHCI) and one later on to JHSS, some questioned if they would even qualify for CWOSSA.

Fast forward a few weeks, and solid playoff performances have earned the Vikes the WCSSAA title and they have as good a shot as anyone to come home with a CWOSSA title in a wide-open AAAA field.

The Vikes have nice balance in sleek shooting Jacob Ranton, penetrating guard Alex Anagnostopoulos, and inside finisher Malcolm Piazza. They also get great production from their 6th man, Jeremy Scott.

John F. Ross Royals (7-7 D10, D10 semifinalists - D10 #2)
Past CWOSSA Championships: 2007 (AAAA), 1988, 82, 80, 78 76 (AAA)
Key Players: Nick Maule, Mike Freisen

A good word for this team is "inconsistent" ----- but it's not all bad. They've at times shown flashes of being one of the top teams in all of CWOSSA (split games against Rez, beat St. John's & SJAM) while at other times appearing very ordinary (regular season loss to GCVI). They've been playing well down the stretch and I expect a strong showing from the Royals this weekend.

Their two key players are slashing guard Nick Maule (who is also a great distributor) and shooting guard Mike Friesen, who is deadly from behind the arc but also not afraid to get physical on the interior. His size can create numerous difficulties for the opposition.

The Royals are well coached under head man Charles Douglas. He frequently switches defense and enjoys a high-tempo game --- something that could come into play for Ross as a lot of other clubs don't go as deep as they do.

Resurrection Phoenix (10-0 D8, D8 Champions - D8 #1)
Past CWOSSA Championships: 2009 (AAAA)
Key Players: Cory Kenning, Alphonso Ellis, Tyler Bartley, Adam Schneider, Adrian Russell

The Phoenix enter as the defending CWOSSA champions, but don't get this squad confused with last year's team --- they only have two returning players from last year's CWOSSA championship team.

Like JF Ross, the Phoenix have shown inconsistency at times but have also had some big wins (Bishop Mac among them). They played very well against St. Mary's and will need to continue to execute against the tough teams in their pool to move on to the semifinals.

Centennial CVI Spartans (8-6 D10, D10 Runners Up - D10 #1)
Past CWOSSA Championships: 2006 (AAAA), 1998 (AAA)
Key Players: Aleks Kaludjerovic, Erik Sterne, Ed Gray.

The Spartans are here for more than a brief visit this year. Last year, they had a tough pool with both Resurrection and Grand River and were on the wrong end of a couple of blowouts.

This year, the above three players have stepped up at different times to lead the Spartans to big wins ---- their biggest including Centre Dufferin in tournament play. They also upset Lourdes (only team other than Bishop Mac to beat them in D10) in the league semifinals to earn a championship finals apperance.

The Spartans are dangerous if they get rolling --- I think the winner of the CCVI/GRCI game will be the other team making it through to the semis.

St. John's College Eagles (10-0 D5, D5 Champions - D5 #1)
Past CWOSSA Championships: 1994, 93, 92, 84, 75, 74, 73, 72 (AAA)
Key Players: JP Yurcich, Tyler Van Leeuwen.

St. John's is arguably the favourite to take the AAAA championship. They have kind of been "out on an island" in the D5 league but blasted North Park decisively in the championship series.

PG Tyler Van Leeuwen has established himself as a scoring threat and is one of the better passers out there in junior. JP Yurcich does a lot of good work inside for the Eagles.

Look for STJ to be playing in one of the semifinals on Saturday.

Grand River CI Renegades (8-4 WCSSAA, WCSSAA Runners Up - WCSSAA #2)
Past CWOSSA Championships: 1996 (AAA)
Key Players: Filip Cvrkalj, Nate Walker, Chuder Teny, Chris Coates

The Rens probably come into this tourney a little disappointed with not being able to win the WCSSAA title on Tuesday night. That said, they'll need to get over that in a hurry because they have a great opportunity to do some damage at CWOSSA.

The Rens are the two-time defending silver medalists; to get over that hump they'll need big performances from the guys that support star Filip Cvrkalj ---- Chuder Teny, Nate Walker and Chris Coates will need to step up if the Rens want to walk away with a championship.

Projection and Comments

WIDE OPEN. That's the general consensus among the people I've been talking to; I wouldn't be surprised to see any of the above teams go 2-0 or 0-2 in pool play. Similarly, I won't be surprised to see any of the above 6 teams be crowned champion on Saturday night ---- it's been that kind of year in CWOSSA junior boys basketball. Looks like whoever is peaking at the right time will walk away with the title!

AA CWOSSA: Senior Preview

Participating Teams - AA Senior
Owen Sound CVI
Our Lady of Lourdes (Guelph)
Norwell DSS
Kincardine DSS

Team Previews:
Owen Sound CVI - Owen Sound (BAA Champions)
Past CWOSSA Senior Championships: None
Key Players: Ben Singbeil, Matt Monk

OSCVI has flown a bit under the CWOSSA radar this year up in the BAA. They might be a top-10 club overall, but it's hard to tell based upon some of their results. They have defeated Kitchener Forest Heights (BCI/WCI Tournament) and have a terrific one-two punch in big man Ben Singbeil and Matt Monk. They'll also have some added incentive in seeking the first ever CWOSSA title in OSCVI history......at least according to the CWOSSA website.

Our Lady of Lourdes - Guelph (D10 Quarterfinalists)
Past CWOSSA Senior Championships: 2005 (AA)
Key Players: Mike Finoro, Sharieff Peru

The Crusaders are looking to improve upon a disappointing end to their season (losing in the quarterfinals of the D10 playoffs). An OFSAA berth is definitely not out of reach, especially with one of the better one-two punches around in Mike Finoro (D10's leading scorer) and Sharieff Peru.

Not sure if the Crusaders will be moving any members of their very good junior team up to senior for CWOSSA and/or OFSAA if they qualify, but regardless, Lourdes' key to victory will be on the defensive end. They can definitely score, but can they stop teams enough to be ahead at the end? That question will be answered this weekend.

Norwell DSS - Palmerston (D4 finalists)
Past CWOSSA Senior Championships: None
Key Players: Matt Girodat, Andrew Plonk, Nakeno Amiri

Norwell has been playing their best basketball of the year down the stretch. They defeated Centre Dufferin in their league semifinal before dropping a decision to Westside SS in the D4 championship game.

They are double-digit underdogs (and then some) against OSCVI, but in a one game scenario you never know what might happen.

Kincardine DSS - Kincardine (BAA Semifinalists)
Past CWOSSA Senior Championships: 2004 (AA)
Key Players: Steve Young

The Knights dropped a respectable 54-39 decision to OSCVI in the BAA semifinals ---- and are looking for a good showing here to make up for that.

Steve Young has been the Knights' top scorer during the regular season, and will be key if KDSS hopes to spring an upset over Lourdes in their semifinal.

Overall Comment
I look for an OSCVI/Lourdes final here ---- I would consider it an upset if KDSS or NDSS got through but stranger things have happened. OSCVI would have to be a slight favourite in the final, and I think might have enough to get their first CWOSSA title here.

Picks
Semifinal A - OSCVI over Norwell
Semifinal B - Lourdes over KDSS

Final - OSCVI over Lourdes

AA CWOSSA: Junior Preview

AA Junior Qualifiers
Owen Sound CVI
Sacred Heart
Norwell
Bishop MacDonell

Bishop MacDonell Celtics - Guelph (D10; 14-0 D10, D10 Playoff Champions)
Key Players: Mitchell Wood, Michael Clouthier, Ben Morris, Alex Quintieri

It's not a question of "if" but "when" for this group. The Celtics, my #1 team overall in CWOSSA, are the overwhelming tournament favourite. They also enter having won the previous two "AA" championships.

I think the semifinal against Owen Sound will be the "closer" of the two games, but I still expect a close to a 40 point win there. Again, keep in mind that this team won all their D10 league games by an average of 25+ points per game.

Owen Sound CVI Falcons - Owen Sound (BAA; 20-3 Overall, BAA Semifinalists)
Key Players: Mackenzie Fraser, Nathan Curry, Dustin Boley

OSCVI has had a solid season, though they did lose to a solid WDSS team in the BAA semifinals.

Unfortunately for them, they draw Bishop Mac in the first round. Dustin Boley and company will need to be at their best in order to keep that one competitive.

Norwell DSS Redmen - Palmerston (D4; 2-4 D4/3rd Place)
Key Players: Tyler Pronk, Justin Davidson, Drew Cowan

The Redmen gave Orangeville Westside a game in the junior D4 semifinal before dropping a 46-35 decision. They'll take on Walkerton Sacred Heart in the first of the two semifinals tomorrow.

Tyler Pronk and Justin Davidson have been consistent double-figure scorers for Norwell this season. They'll need big games for the Redmen to make their first finals appearance in a while.

Sacred Heart CHS Crusaders - Walkerton (BAA Champions)
Key Players: Brennan Senra, Jeff Ruttan

I look for the Crusaders to advance to the finals here at home. Brennan Senra has had a great season (which has featured several 20+, and even 30+ games). Coach Mark Dunn has, in the past, had his teams hang around with out of town AAA and AAAA squads at the Walkerton tourney ---- so we'll see what happens.

Overall
Again, this looks like Bishop Mac's tournament to lose. Barring some unforseen event, they will win their third consecutive "AA" title.

Semifinal Predictions:
Walkerton Sacred Heart over Norwell DSS
Bishop Mac over Owen Sound CVI

Bishop Mac over Sacred Heart

WCSSAA Senior Final: Bluevale 51, SJAM 45

Bluevale 51, SJAM 45

......and the monkey is finally off of Bluevale's back after 38 years.

Andrew Beney put in 22 points and grabbed 9 rebounds; Stefan Cvrkalj added 18 points and the Bluevale CI Knights captured their first senior WCSSAA championship in school history by holding off the SJAM Highlanders 51-45.

The Knights got some sweet first-half shooting by Cvrkalj, and excellent interior play from Beney who found some serious space in the SJAM zone to led 28-21 at halftime. In fact, Beney (13) and Cvrkalj (12) combined for 25 of BCI's 28 points in the first half.

Bluevale continued to play well in the third and led 41-28 after three. A quick Andrew Beney bucket early in the 4th put the Knights up 15.

At that point, it looked like it might be over but the Highlanders began to chip away. By the 4:00 mark, they were throwing everything they had at the Knights and were really beginning to threaten. In fact, when Karsten Beney picked up his 5th foul with 3:05 to go, the Knights were only up 6 (43-37).

It seemed like Stefan Cvrkalj had given the Knights some breathing room as he hit a couple of free throws to the chant of "M V P" with 1:13 left. However, the 'Landers roared right back and cut the lead to 47-45.

Cue a little redemption for Drew Ballak.

If you recall, the Knights' forward missed two pressure free throws against Brampton Notre Dame in the final of the St. Benedict tournament in Cambridge. Bluevale ended up losing that game in overtime to the Brampton squad.

This time, with less than half a minute to play, he calmly drilled both free throws and gave the Knights a two-possession lead that they would extend at the end when Cvrkalj added 2 more FTs for the game's final margin.

Alongside Beney's 22 points and Cvrkalj's 18, Ballak added 8 points and 12 rebounds.

For SJAM, Jake Robinet had 13 points but encountered his struggles at the free throw line (0-for-5). Edem Ame chipped in with 12.

Both teams had their struggles from behind the arc, combining for a 5-for-30 (16.7%) showing.
The Knights will play in "Pool A" at CWOSSA alongside Kitchener Resurrection and Guelph Centennial. SJAM will be in "Pool B" with Guelph JF Ross and Brantford St. John's.

WCSSAA Junior Final: WCI 46, Grand River 44

Waterloo CI 46, Grand River 44

The Waterloo Collegiate Vikings held off a furious rally by the Grand River Renegades and captured the WCSSAA junior championship by a 46-44 score in overtime yesterday at Cameron Heights.

It was far from pretty, at least in the early going. Both teams showed some early jitters and turned the ball over with regularity. The first half saw only 30 points scored between the two teams, with the Vikes taking a 20-10 edge into halfitme.

Another 8-4 push by WCI got them up by 14 points (28-14), but that's where things started to turn around for Grand River. They went on a 16-2 run over the remainder of the third quarter and early fourth to tie the game at 30-30.

Waterloo made one last big push to open up a 6 point lead after Jeremy Scott made an "and one" with just over 3:00 to go (40-34). Filip Cvrkalj came right back and drilled a three, and that began to set up a very exciting finish.

Fast forward to about 1:30 to go; the Renegades actually took a brief lead after 2 Chuder Teny free throws put them up by one (41-40). Malcolm Piazza (who was 0-for-2 from the line on the night) calmly drilled 2 on the other end with :45 left to put the Vikes back in front.

After a Grand River miss, Adam Anagnostopoulos kept the door open just a bit for Grand River by missing the front end of a one-and-one.

With about :25 left, Chuder Teny was fouled and converted 1-of-2 to tie the game back up. Surprisingly, each squad had several chances after that. Teny was actually fouled with about 8.5 to go after a scramble and a Grand River rebound off a WCI miss. However, he missed the free throw attempt.

In the scramble for the rebound, the ball popped loose and WCI's Malcolm Piazza and Jacob Ranton had essentially a 2-on-zero for a layup at the other end.......however, Piazza took a high dribble and the ball fumbled out of bounds with one second left in regulation.

(Interestingly enough, I thought GRCI's Nikola Bevan was going to get a foul call for what appeared to be a shove out of bounds after the whistle ---- thankfully, the referees let these two teams decide it on the court).

After a full-court heave fell short by Cvrkalj, we went to overtime where Anagnostopoulos gave WCI a quick lead right off the opening tip when he raced in for a layup. Only 6 points were scored in the extra frame, with WCI putting in 4 of them for the victory.

The Rens' had an inbounds under WCI's basket with 1.5 to go in the extra frame and down 2, but Cvrkalj's three-ball at the buzzer came up short.

Cvrkalj led GRCI and all scorers with 19 points. Teny added 10 for the Rens.

For WCI, their balanced attack was led by Piazza (12), Jeremy Scott (11), and Anagnostopoulos (11). The Vikes proved that they have several guys that can hurt you as their top gunner in their 2 prior playoff games, Jacob Ranton, was held off the scoresheet on Tuesday.

All in all, it proved to be one of the most exciting WCSSAA finals in recent memory.

WCI will take the WCSSAA #1 position at "AAAA" CWOSSA this weekend and will be in a pool with Resurrection CSS (D8) & John F. Ross of Guelph from the D10 league.

Grand River (WCSSAA #2) will be in pool play with St. John's of Brantford and Guelph Centennial.

WCSSAA Finals: Vikes, Knights Survive Scares to Win

WCSSAA Junior Championship
The Grand River Renegades were exactly where they wanted to be --- down 14 points in the second half.

In a remarkably similar game to their OT thriller against Cameron Heights on Saturday, the Renegades battled back from a 28-14 deficit in the third quarter but fell to the WCI Vikings 46-44 in overtime.

The Rens used a 16-2 run over the third and fourth quarter to tie the game at 30. Things got a little dicey at the end, and the OT was a low scoring 4-2 affair for WCI. Filip Cvrkalj missed a game-winning three pointer at the buzzer.

For WCI, their balanced attack was led by Malcolm Piazza (12), Jeremy Scott (11) and Adam Anagnostopoulos (11). Grand River's Cvrkalj had 19, while Chuder Teny added 10.

WCSSAA Senior Championship
The Bluevale Knights looked like they were going to run away with this one. The SJAM Highlanders had other ideas.

In the end, the Knights won their first ever WCSSAA championship in school history by holding off the Highlanders 51-45. The Knights took a 41-28 lead going into the final frame, but it seemed as though they got a little tight and started playing "not to lose". SJAM cranked up the defensive pressure and was able to turn a couple of turnovers into baskets and get back in the game. In fact, SJAM got all the way back to 47-45 before Drew Ballak canned 2 free throws with :15 left to give BCI the two possession lead for good. Stefan Cvrkalj tacked on two more in the waning seconds for the final margin of victory.

Andrew Beney was huge for Bluevale with 22 points and 9 rebounds. The 'Landers blanketed BCI star Stefan Cvrkalj all night, limiting him to just 10 shot attempts. However, Cvrkalj went 5-for-10 en route to an 18 point performance.

Jake Robinet (13) and Edem Ame (12) were SJAM's high scorers.

Interesting stat of the game? The Highlanders went nearly two full quarters (second and third) without making a two-point field goal. Matthias Hamm's "and one" with 24.6 left in the third frame ended that drought.

Speaking of droughts, that ends Bluevale's senior title drought at 38 years. By the way, I've been informed that Grand River's senior title drought is at 44 years. They've had a lot of junior success lately.....so we'll see what happens on that front.

----------------------
We'll have more on both games (including boxscores and analysis) tomorrow at some point. My aunt's funeral (she was 94 & had a good run!) is tomorrow morning, so please understand that this will probably be a little bit later in the day. Thanks!

Junior AA: Bishop Mac Scores 37 in First Quarter, Blows Out Simcoe

The D10 junior champion Bishop Macdonell Celtics defeated Simcoe CS 80-16 in a qualifying game for the CWOSSA AA basketball tournament.

The Celts led 37-3 after the opening quarter and then promptly took their foot off the accelerator, coasting to a comfortable victory.

Today, Owen Sound CVI will play Saugeen in a junior qualifier to determine the final AA participant.

The Celtics, my #1 CWOSSA junior team, are the overwhelming favourite to win their third consecutive AA championship. In fact, I'd be surprised if a team comes within 35-40 points of them this Friday.

The senior bracket, though, is a little more interesting and features a couple of very good teams in Lourdes (Guelph) and OSCVI. I'd give the slight edge to OSCVI to get the OFSAA berth, but we'll see how it shakes down.

Here is the schedule for AA CWOSSA this Friday (Sacred Heart HS, Walkerton):

10am - Junior Semi-Final #1 - Sacred Heart vs. Norwell
11:30am - Junior Semi-Final #2 - Bishop MacDonell vs. OSCVI or Saugeen

1pm - Senior Semi-Final #1 - Lourdes vs. Kincardine
2:30pm - Senior Semi-Final #2 - OSCVI vs. Norwell

4pm - Junior Final
5:30pm - Senior Final

D4 Junior Final: Centre Dufferin Destroys Westside SS

No trouble on Monday night for my projected #1 AAA seed in junior, the Centre Dufferin Royals.

The Royals blasted Orangeville's Westside SS by 45 points, 70-25, to capture the District 4 crown. Doug Costanzo had 26 points in the win, while Marco Zanette added 10 and James Dyer 8.

For WSS, Riley Crean was their top scorer with 7 points.

Despite the win, Centre Dufferin hasn't yet qualified for CWOSSA --- they must first win over the D10's St. James of Guelph in a play-in game for the CWOSSA berth. CDDHS bested them in tournament play recently, so the Lions will be looking for revenge.

According to the information I have, that game goes tomorrow at St. James.

WCSSAA Finals: A Challenge.......

I'm challenging both Bluevale & SJAM to bring the school spirit tonight........I want to see some fans AND some school spirit.

Here's a photo from a recent high school game in San Diego County between San Pasqual (former RCSS junior Mike Onochie's current team) and Escondido HS.

Looks like a great atmosphere --- hopefully we can match (or top it!) tonight.

Here's hoping that all 180 people on the Facebook event page show up as well.

See you there!

WCSSAA Senior Finals Preview: #1 Bluevale vs. #2 SJAM

In tonight's WCSSAA Senior final (8:30pm at Cameron Hts), we've got ourselves the matchup that most people expected throughout the year.

The Bluevale Knights (12-0 regular season) finished their regular season undefeated and then promptly dispatched of #8 Preston and #4 KCI in convincing fashion.

SJAM, whose lone loss was to Bluevale in regular season play (51-49), had close playoff victories over Forest Heights (by 6) and Cameron Heights (by 5).

Both of these clubs match-up very well on paper. Both clubs have a bit of size (Bluevale with 6'6" Andrew Beney & 6'6" Perrin Smith off the bench). SJAM has 6'7" forward Jake Robinet patrolling the paint.

Both have solid guards. Bluevale with Moser favourite Stefan Cvrkalj and SJAM with grade 11's Ben Reyhani & Edem Ame (who has assumed a lot of the PG duties, at least in the semifinal).

Both teams also thought that they "didn't play well" in their regular season matchup. And, both get a chance to play well tonight and earn a WCSSAA senior title.

A lot is on the line here --- Bluevale is seeking their first senior championship in school history. SJAM is looking to continue their success and establish themselves as the current "dynasty" in WCSSAA senior boys' hoops.

As for me? I'm taking the Knights. They're hot right now and I think they'll outscore the Highlanders in this one.

****Prediction: Bluevale 67, SJAM 55****
