Junior: WCSSAA Qualifying Round Previews

All games go tomorrow, February 16th at 3:30pm.

#12 Preston (4-8) at #5 Eastwood (8-4)
Regular Seaon Meeting: Eastwood 72, Preston 37

I'm sure the Eastwood Rebels are happy to get a tune-up game in before a potential quarterfinal test against the WCI Vikings. Jerelle Vaughan, Terrel Christian and co. are playing some great ball right now. They held Preston's Wes Meertens in check last time, and if they can do so again on Tuesday evening they'll advance to the quarterfinals.

Pick: Eastwood (by 27).

#11 Bluevale (4-8) at #6 Grand River (8-4)
Regular Season Meeting: Grand River 59, Bluevale 46

These teams met a week ago with Grand River coming away with a 13 point victory. A few Rens (like starter Filip Cvrkalj) have a lot of playoff experience from last year's run to the CWOSSA finals, and I think that will shine through here. It's been a tough year for the Knights, but they did well to win a few games down the stretch and qualify for the postseason.

Pick: Grand River (by 22).

#10 WODSS (4-8) at #7 SJAM (8-4)
Regular Season Meeting: SJAM 57, WODSS 36

That regular season meeting (back in December) really doesn't mean much. The Highlanders were without Theshawn Berry and Connor Bradley, while the Crusaders were just starting to know each other. They (WODSS) have been playing better lately, coming within 12 of Eastwood last week. The 'Landers can't take them lightly.

Meanwhile, what's up with SJAM? Back in late January after the 9th game, the Highlanders were 8-1 and tied for first with Forest Heights. They had 2 games in hand on the 5th place team and it seemed as though a first-round bye was almost assured......then they dropped games to Jacob Hespeler, WCI and Eastwood. The tiebreakers were not in their favour and they finished 7th.

I think the Highlanders might have something to prove now that the playoffs are here. They've gone from being a preseason favourite to (should they qualify) an underdog in the WCSSAA quarterfinals. They're one of the most dangerous "#7 seeds" I've seen in a while.

Pick: SJAM (by 19).

#9 Glenview Park (7-5) at #8 Huron Heights (8-4)
Regular Season Meeting: Huron Heights 70, Glenview Park 51

The Huskies have Sean Samuel back in action as of last Thursday; he scored a bunch in his return and helped HHHS to a 30-point win over Southwood to secure a home playoff game. After an early season win over WCI helped get the hopes up, you have to say that they have been slightly disappointing since then ---- although injuries and one transfer have decimated their roster at times.

Both of these teams will (barring a PHS upset) qualify for CWOSSA, so this game takes on added significance from a rankings perspective. I'll give Huron the slight edge at home, but considering how things have gone lately I wouldn't be surprised to see the GPSS Panthers advance to the quarters.

Pick: Huron Heights (by 5).
