D8 Junior Semifinal: Rez Survives Scare From Bennies in Bizarre Game

D8 Junior Semifinal: Resurrection 24, St. Benedict 12.

Don't adjust your monitors. I'm not reporting a junior football score from September here.

The #1 seed Resurrection Phoenix did it with defense and outlasted the #4 seed St. Benedict Saints by a 24-12 final in today's D8 semifinal at Resurrection in what was probably one of the lowest scoring games in D8 junior boys history.

The Phoenix held the Saints off the scoreboard in BOTH the 2nd and 4th quarters.

The halftime score? 8-7 Resurrection.

Confused? Read on.......

Firstly, Coach Ron Martinello at St. Benedict is to be complimented on his well coached team who stuck to their game plan by slowing the pace with a "stall style" offence (basically playing "keep away" for a minute or more at a time before attempting to score) and an extremely tight defence that kept Resurrection away from the basket.

The Saints led 7-2 after the first quarter (they got the lead then ran off 1:30 of game clock for the last shot of the quarter). Resurrection was the only team to score in the 2nd quarter and on the strength of a 6-0 "run" went into the locker room up 8-7 at recess. Resurrection then used a 10-5 3rd quarter to take control of the game followed by a 6-0 4th quarter to finish with a 24-12 victory.

For RCSS, Tyler Bartley and Mark Radcliffe had 7 points each to lead the way. Adam Schneider had 5, Adrian Russell 2, Cory Kenning 2 and Alphonso Ellis 1.

Tag-el Din Shakur (4 points), Steve Duong and Nathan Schmidt (3 each) were tops for the Saints. Steve Zatychies had the other 2 points for SBCSS.

RCSS: 02-06-10-06 = 24
SBCSS: 07-00-05-00 = 12
