The
Waterloo Warriors are pleased to announce that Craig Nickel has been
hired as the interim head coach of the women's basketball program for
the 2016-17 season.
Nickel, a teacher and guidance counsellor at Waterloo Collegiate
Institute (WCI) brings a wealth of basketball knowledge to the
Warriors.
Nickel has been the coach of the WCI Vikings boys' and girls' basketball
programs since 2000, having won numerous regional and city
championships. Nickel has also coached the Waterloo Wildhawks, KW
Lightning and Tri-County Thunder for many years while guiding the
Thunder to a Junior Women's Elite League (JUEL) Championship in 2015 and
a silver medal in 2016.
Nickel was named the JUEL coach of the year in consecutive years (2014,
2015) and has also been recognized as the 2013 Ontario "Leader of
Distinction" by the Canadian Student Leadership Association.
On top of all his youth basketball experience, Nickel is also familiar
with the black and gold having worked as an assistant of the women's
program from 2000 to 2004.
"We are excited to have Craig lead our women's program for the year," said Associate Director Brian Bourque.
"Craig's experience and mature persona will provide stability for our
student-athletes. Craig has an outstanding reputation across our region
for being an excellent coach, and mentor. I strongly believe Craig
will be a great fit for our student-athletes."
Nickel, who has his BBA (Laurier), BEd (Western), and MBA (McMaster),
will begin his duties this week, putting systems in place and preparing
for the home opener on Saturday as the Warriors host the Toronto Varsity
Blues at 1pm.
