What a day in D10 basketball.
Sure, the games may not necessarily have been close in the senior circuit, but my picks certainly were --- I had all 4 games tabbed within 3 points: Bishop Mac by 30 (pick: 27); St. James by 14 (pick: 14); Lourdes by 17 (pick: 19); and JF Ross by 27 (pick: 25).
Here's a rundown of the action, starting in senior:
JF Ross 58, Orangeville 31
My Pick: JFR by 25
Scoring details weren't available, but the Royals (1-1) picked up their first win at the expense of the winless Bears.
St. James 53, Guelph CVI 39
My Pick: STJ by 14
The Gazzola sisters, Brittany (18) and Chelsey (11) led the way in this win for the Lions, while GCVI had three in double-figures: Hanna Chidwick (12), Clay Barley-Janzen (11) and Katie Strongman (11).
Bishop Mac 56, Centennial 26
My Pick: BMAC by 27
Vicky Lin netted 12 while Jessica Morris added 9 as the Celtics cruised to a home win over Centennial. Hannah Newman had a game-high 15 for CCVI, with Kendra Achonwa adding 6.
Lourdes 47, Centre Wellington 30
My Pick: OLOL by 19
It was close at the half; however, the Crusaders extended things out in the 3rd quarter to stay unbeaten. Lourdes' balanced attack was keyed by Hannah Pearsall (8), Monica Trimble (8) and Victoria Brombal (6). Alyssa Hoag had a game-high 12 for CW, with Hailey Salvian adding 8 and Meaghan Fennell notching 4.

Recruiting News: WCI's Klein Announces NCAA Commitment to Bryant University
Alex Klein has made up her mind.
WCI's 6'2" forward announced a (verbal) commitment yesterday to Bryant University, an NCAA Division I school located in Smithfield, RI.
The Bulldogs, who play in the Northeast Conference (NEC), went 14-15 overall last season including a 7-11 mark in NEC play. They return 4 starters from last year's squad this coming season, including their leading scorer --- a fellow Canadian, junior-to-be Naana Ankoma-Mensa (Brampton, ON/D'Youville).
Klein had recently made official visits to her shortlisted schools, which also included Stetson University (DeLand, FL) and Iona College (New Rochelle, NY).
Klein's commitment will also ensure that CWOSSA's streak of sending (at least) one player south of the border on an NCAA D-1 scholarship will continue. Here's a look at a few others, with their first year down south listed:
2012-13: Michelle Hudyn, Missouri (Eastwood/Kitchener)
2011-12: Kelly Van Leeuwen, Niagara (St. John's/Brantford)
2010-11: Jen Lennox, Canisius (Forest Hts./Kitchener)
2009-10: Kaila Montgomery, Cleveland St. (WCI/Waterloo)
Congrats, Alex!

D10: Tuesday Picks
YTD: 5-2 (.714)
JF Ross (0-1) at Orangeville (0-2)
My Pick: JFR by 25
One team should get their first win here --- and it will be the JF Ross Royals, who should continue the drought of the ODSS Bears.
Centennial (0-2) at Bishop Mac (2-0)
My Pick: BMAC by 27
The Bishop Mac Celtics will look to move to 3-0 at home against Centennial today; the Spartans are improved but not by enough to take out BMAC on the road.
CWDHS (1-0) at Lourdes (2-0)
My Pick: OLOL by 19
Another "AA" school in my CWOSSA top 10, the Crusaders (like Bishop Mac) are also seeking their 3rd straight league win today. CWDHS beat them last year in the semifinals by 19, so I'll take Lourdes to flip the script today.
GCVI (1-1) at St. James (1-1)
My Pick: STJ by 14
The Gaels are no push-over, but I like the Lions at home today --- provided they don't overlook GCVI in this one.
JF Ross (0-1) at Orangeville (0-2)

WCSSAA: Tuesday Schedule & Picks
After a solid 15-1 picks record last week, things get a lot more difficult today with a couple of tough games on the schedule. Let's get right to it:
Southwood (1-0) at Cameron Hts. (2-0) **Game of the Day**
My Pick: CHCI by 5
Two WCSSAA "darkhorses" will meet today in a 3:30pm tilt; the Gaels are 2-0 after a solid upset at Jacob Hespeler followed by an easy home win against Huron Heights. Southwood only took out SJAM by 7 last week, but 3 of their key players were absent from that one due to a school trip. I'm expecting a close game here, and I'll go with the home team to win.
Jacob Hespeler (1-1) at Eastwood (0-1)
My Pick: JHSS by 27
After a tough opening week schedule, the Hawks should comfortably move to 2-1 today at the expense of the Eastwood Rebels.
Grand River (1-1) at KCI (2-0)
My Pick: KCI by 4
Pretty much a toss-up to me on paper, so I'll again go with the home team here.
Glenview Park (0-2) at WCI (2-0)
My Pick: WCI by 35
After a tough tournament this weekend, I expect the Viking regulars to see a lot less time in today's game.
Preston (0-2) at Bluevale (2-0)
My Pick: BCI by 22
The dominant guard play of the Bluevale Knights should move them to 3-0 despite the best efforts of Preston's top scorer, Ashley White.
Huron Heights (0-2) at SJAM (0-2)
My Pick: SJAM by 13
After a couple of single-digit losses, I expect the 'Landers to pick up their first win today at home.
Elmira (0-2) at Forest Hts. (2-0)
My Pick: EDSS by 5
Don't led the records deceive you as EDSS had Waterloo-Oxford and WCI last week, while the Trojans had an easier time with Galt and Glenview Park. It should be close, but knowing that EDSS needs this one badly with Jacob Hespeler on deck, I'll go with the Lancers here.
Waterloo-Oxford (2-0) at Galt (0-2)
My Pick: WODSS by 38
I look for the Crusaders to win their third straight game by a margin of 30+, although this will be the first contest where they aren't at the advantage of their Baden rims.
YTD: 15-1 (.938)

BAA Monday: Crusaders, Riverhawks Sweep
Note: As per my previous post in the spring, Walkerton's high school is now known as "Walkerton District Community School" and its sports teams are known as the "Riverhawks".
Both Walkerton-based high schools, Sacred Heart and Walkerton DCS, got off to a nice start on Monday afternoon in the BAA league with both schools sweeping their respective junior-senior doubleheaders.
Against Hanover John Diefenbaker, the SHHS Crusaders outscored the Trojans 28-17 in the junior tilt, and 33-20 on the senior side of things.
Victoria Carroll had 12 to lead Sacred Heart in the senior contest, with Kira Mortimer pacing JDSS with 11.
Meanwhile, Sacred Heart's cross-town rivals, Walkerton District, swept the Saugeen DSS Royals on Monday.
The (now) Riverhawks received 19 from Ciara Lark in the senior contest to pull out a 38-32 win; Joanne Rae and Hannah Niesen each netted 8 in the junior game as WDSS scored a 36-15 victory.
BAA play continues Wednesday in the BAA South (5 teams); the North Division schedule (4 teams) gets underway next week.

D8 Monday: Rez Juniors, Seniors Stay Perfect
It's early, but the Resurrection Phoenix have risen to the top of the D8 junior and senior girls basketball standings.
The Phoenix picked up their fifth win in as many games in both leagues combined; the junior Phoenix knocked off Monsignor Doyle 41-25 while the seniors trounced the 'Stangs by a 52-12 final.
In the junior contest, Celia McGlynn poured in 18 points while Patricia Enrique added 6. Victoria Borosso (9) and Yasmine Smith (7) were the top performers for MDCSS.
The Rez seniors were led by a solid 24-point outing from rookie guard Sarah Schulz. Angelika Jarski added 6 more for RCSS; the Monsignor Doyle scoring details were unavailable.
In Cambridge, St. Benedict and St. Mary's split their junior-senior doubleheader, with the junior Saints victorious 47-25 while the senior Eagles turned the tables in a 38-15 win to stay tied for first place with Resurrection (2-0).
On the senior side, Sydney Greulich netted 9 while Beth Zabib added 8 for SMHS; junior scoring was again led by the Saints' Kayla Leusink (13) and Afifa Salaad (11). Becca Siewerk had 9 for the junior Eagles.
The other D8 game on Monday was in the junior division, and unlike the games above it was a nail-biter to the end.
Pere-Rene de Galinee (PRDG) defeated Rockway 28-27, backed by an 18-point effort from Christine Boileau. Emily Vos had a game-high 22 for the Flames.

D10 Season Preview/Comments: Celtics Look Strong In Early Going
We’re about one week into the D10 senior girls’ campaign,
and at this point, it looks as though the balance of power has shifted back
from the “AAAA” schools to the “AA/AAA” schools.
Last year, two of those “AAAA” schools, Guelph JF Ross and
Fergus Centre Wellington, met in the D10 final, with CWDHS prevailing. However, the Falcons’ top two scorers, league
MVP Erica McFadden and Jaime Janssen, both graduated --- leaving a couple of
huge holes for the Falcons to fill.
Here’s a quick rundown of the D10 league:
Projected Order of Finish
1. Bishop Mac
2. Lourdes
3. St. James
4. JF Ross
5. Guelph CVI
6. Centennial
7. CWDHS
8. Orangeville
Mark’s Thoughts
Bishop Mac
The drop-off at Bishop Mac won’t be nearly as drastic as you
might have initially thought given the loss of a couple of key scorers from
last year’s team (Tesha Kraszkiewicz & Rebecca Keil). Returning forward Andrea Priamo will couple
with veterans Katie Labron and Rebecca Morris, while rookie Jess Morris should
add to the depth of the squad.
“There’s lots of depth to BMac’s squad this year, which will
help provide some entertaining basketball,” said Head Coach Karen Bremner. It’s certainly been entertaining to this
point for Celtic fans, as their squad is 2-0 in league play after a big win
over St. James, a projected “top 4” team in the league.
Lourdes
A mix of returning veterans (Hannah Pearsall) and incoming
rookies such as Charlotte Case and Monica Trimble will definitely help the
Crusaders impove upon a 6-8 record in 2011.
Early indications show BMac as, arguably, the team to beat
--- but Lourdes’ youth provides it with a lot of upside and perhaps the most “potential”
to grow as a team before the D10 playoffs in November.
St. James
Despite losing their D10 all-stars to graduation (Erica Zen
& Jade McGarr), there are several returning starters and some incoming
talent from the junior level that should keep the Lions very competitive within
the D10 league as well as “AAA” CWOSSA.
Brittany & Chelsey Gazzola, Keeley McVicar, and Ashley Benham are the primary offensive threats to watch for.
Brittany & Chelsey Gazzola, Keeley McVicar, and Ashley Benham are the primary offensive threats to watch for.
JF Ross
The Royals actually return a decent percentage of their
scoring offense from last year, as their starting backcourt (D10 All-Stars Sydney
Resch & Julia Robertson) returns from a year ago. They’ll certainly miss the individual traits
that the other starters from a year ago brought --- from athleticism (Kelly
Dunk) to interior presence (Emily Collins) and guard-play (Silvie Cafarella).
Rookies Teddi Taran and Steph Gordon will be counted upon to
step in and fill those gaps.
Guelph CVI
With returning D10 all-star Hanna Chidwick, and veterans
Katie Strongman and Jamie Young leading the way, a “top 4” finish is certainly
not out of the question for the Green Gaels.
In order to keep that as a possibility, GCVI will need to “take
care of business” against the teams mentioned below --- one thing that they
started doing last week with a 55-49 win over Centennial.
Centennial CVI
Coach Jack Bangay only lost one player to graduation, so he
should see some improvement from a 2-12 record a year ago.
Veterans Hannah Ferguson, Kendra Achonwa and Odessa
Grant-Esco will lead the way for the Spartans, with Hannah Newman being the top
junior grad.
Centre Wellington
Falcons
Veteran Hailey Salvian and grade 11s Chloe Trapp and Madison
Fennell (who was moved up to the senior squad during the playoffs) should be
able to put together a few wins for the Falcons from Fergus.
That being said, it may take a little while for the new
pieces to gel offensively, so the defensive intensity will be key in the early
going for this squad.
Orangeville DSS
Bears
The Bears are currently in the midst of a 43-game D10 losing
streak, which dates back to October, 2008.
That being said, I have a feeling that this year may see an
end to that streak, at least based upon fairly competitive early returns.
Claire Fenton should average in double-digits for the Bears
this season, and pick up another spot on the D10 All-Star team.
Cambridge Times: Hawks Shocked By Cameron Heights
Article By: Bill Doucet
Cambridge Times; Sept. 19/12
A No. 3 pre-season ranking by cwossabasketball.com has put a big target on the backs of the Jacob Hespeler Hawks.
While the Hawks showed flashes as to why they are considered a serious contender in Waterloo County senior girls’ basketball loop this season, a rancid third quarter proved to be their undoing as the Cameron Heights Gaels shocked the Hawks with a 41-37 win on Tuesday in the spring season opener at Jacob Hespeler Secondary School.
The Hawks outscored the Gaels in three quarters on Tuesday, but gave up a seemingly comfortable 21-14 halftime lead when they were outscored 22-6 in the third quarter.
“I think we just got lazy on defence and let them take wide open shots without putting a hand up. That kind of killed us,” said the Hawks top sniper on the day, Brooklyn Wright, who had 14 points.
It certainly didn’t help that it looked like someone put Saran Wrap over the basket in the second half, as Jacob Hespeler had trouble draining shots. A late comeback that got them within a point with two minutes to go was snuffed out by missed layups.
“It got kind of frustrating at one point,” Wright said.
“Nothing really fell for us in the second half.”
In the first half though, the Hawks held comfortable leads throughout the game, though their shooting was still suspect. Both teams looked like they had to shake the rust off from the summer, but a 10-4 run in the second quarter gave Jacob Hespeler their seven-point halftime lead.
The table were turned in the third quarter though, as the Gaels went on a scoring run of their own to a 36-27 lead by the end of the frame.
Jacob Hespeler caught fire in the fourth quarter and outscored Cameron 10-2 to cut the lead to one point, but missed shots forced the Hawks to foul at the end and that was it for the comeback.
It was a game Wright said her team expected to win.
“I think it was an eye-opener for us; I think we need to talk more on defence and have to play together as a team. This is our first game and we really haven’t done anything but scrimmage.”
Despite opening up with a loss, Wright assured that it would light a fire under the team.
“We’re not going to disappoint.”
Candice Wright also chipped in with nine points for the home squad, while Liz McLellan had 15 points for Cameron Heights and Hunter Johns had nine.

D8 Monday Picks, D4 & BAA Set To Tip Today
D8 Monday Picks
D8 Senior play continues today, with a pair of games on the docket. Both 5pm starts feature an undefeated team going up against a team looking for its first D8 win. Here's a look:
St. Mary's (1-0) at St. Benedict (0-1)
My Pick: SMHS by 15
Once they get to full strength, the Saints "should" be competitive in the D8 league. In a league where you play everyone at least twice (possibly 3x if you include playoff matchups), teams mustn't overlook SBCSS based upon these early-season results.
Mons. Doyle (0-2) at Resurrection (2-0)
My Pick: RCSS by 32
The Phoenix shouldn't have much of a problem dispatching the MDCSS Mustangs at home.
D4, BAA Set To Tip Today
A couple of other CWOSSA-area leagues are set to tip today --- the D4 senior circuit has two games today (Wellington Hts. @ Centre Dufferin; Norwell @ Erin) while the BAA South Division starts up today as well, also with two games (Saugeen @ Walkerton; Sacred Heart @ John Diefenbaker).
One exhibition BAA game was played over the weekend, with St. Mary's (Owen Sound) grade 11 Katie Langdon pouring in 36 points in a dominant 43-22 win over Walkerton DSS.

Junior Tourneys: Grand River, Bishop Mac Win Titles
Grand River Takes St. Mike's (Stratford) Invitational
I've been hearing some good things about the junior squad at Grand River CI in Kitchener this year, and although they have just one league game (a dominant win) under their belt --- we got a bit more of an idea of their potential strength this past weekend.
The Renegades won the St. Mike's tournament with ease, besting a field that included three D8 teams (St. Benedict, St. Mary's and St. David) as well as Patrick Fogarty (Orillia), and the co-hosts from Stratford St. Mike's and Stratford Northwestern.
A returnee from last year's team that made a CWOSSA appearance, Mackenzie Miller, and grade nine standout Tara DeBoer are certainly two players to watch.
Bishop Mac Celtics Win at Eastwood
The Bishop Mac Celtics snuck past St. Thomas Aquinas of London 32-30 to capture the 5th annual Eastwood CI junior girls' basketball tournament over the weekend in Kitchener.
The Celts knocked off Kitchener Resurrection in the semifinals, and started their weekend with a comfortable win over Stratford Central.
Aquinas defeated Sarnia St. Christopher in their semifinal game, who knocked off Rez by a 49-28 count in the 3rd place game.
Kitchener Collegiate took the consolation final with a 31-23 win over Stratford Central.

JHSS Senior Tournament: Knights Squeeze Past Hawks For Tourney Title
At least on this occasion, the excellent guard play of the Bluevale Knights won out over the interior presence of the Jacob Hespeler Hawks.
The Knights (#5 in last week's CWOSSABasketball.com senior rankings) took out the #4 Jacob Hespeler Hawks by a 51-42 final in the tournament championship of the JHSS Invitational on Saturday evening. The game was certainly a lot closer than the final score would indicate.
It was a frenetic pace early on, with both teams not afraid to push the tempo. The first quarter would end with the Hawks up 15-12, although star forward Brooklyn Wright had 2 fouls to go along with the 8 points that she counted in the first frame.
Things slowed down a bit in the second quarter, and Bluevale trimmed the gap to 25-24 at half. It seemed as though the Knights were gaining in confidence, and it really shone through in the third quarter.
BCI would go on a 17-9 run over the 8-minute third quarter, which has certainly been Hespeler's nemesis to this point in the season (re: 22-6 3Q score for CHCI in their league game). This allowed Bluevale to take a 7-point lead (41-34) heading into the final frame.
To JHSS' credit, they refused to go away. Bluevale pushed the lead to 9, but the Hawks got a few baskets inside, including an "and-one" by Candice Wright late that cut things down to 45-42 with under two minutes to go.
Unfortunately for Hawk fans in attendance, JHSS had to resort to fouling and the ball ended up almost every time in the hands of one of BCI's best free-throw shooters, Sarah Hamm, who went 6-for-6 down the stretch to account for the final 51-42 margin of victory.
Speaking of free throw shooting, it was certainly a factor in the outcome on Saturday evening as the Knights torched an 85% clip (17-for-20) from the stripe while Jacob Hespeler was just 38.8% (7-for-18).
Hamm led Bluevale with 21 points, while Natalie Bishop added 9. Brooklyn Wright led the Hawks with 15 points and 9 rebounds.
**Boxscore To Follow**
Jacob Hespeler and Bluevale both won handily in their semifinal games against St. Mary's (Kitchener) and Grand River respectively. St. Mary's took the third place game between those squads 49-38, with everyone on both rosters seeing extensive action.

Senior: WCI Vikings Claim Title in Brantford
As Yogi Berra would say, "it's déja vu all over again".
Almost 10 months to the day after defeating the Brantford St. John's Green Eagles 46-39 in the 2011 CWOSSA "AAAA" championship final, the WCI Vikings again went to Brantford and got past SJC by almost the exact same margin, this time topping the Eagles in a 45-39 thriller.
The game was tight throughout, with the Green Eagles taking a 22-18 second quarter lead before the Vikes tallied the final four points of the half to tie things up at 22. The 'back and forth' trend continued in the third, with WCI taking a slim lead early only to see that flipped by the end of the frame as SJC assumed a 3-point lead heading to the fourth.
More lead changes ensued during the final eight minutes, and it wasn't until grade 10 rookie Kaylee Anagnostopoulos' "and one" basket with just over 1:00 to go that put WCI up by 2 (a lead that they would not relinquish). WCI would go 6-for-6 from the FT line down the stretch to help ice the game and account for most of the final margin of victory.
"We got the better of them this time, but it was very clear to me that these are two evenly matched teams that would likely split 5-5 if we were able to play ten times against each other," said Viking Head Coach Craig Nickel after the win.
WCI's Lindsay Taylor posted 17 points (including 8-for-8 FTs) and 4 rebounds for the winners, while Anagnostopoulos had an efficient 14 points (6-for-9 FGs). Forward Alex Klein chipped in with a near double-double of 9 points and 11 rebounds.
Forward Megan Thompson equalled Taylor's game-high with 17 points of her own for St. John's, while grade 9 PG Kendra Van Leeuwen notched 14 points.
WCI advanced to the final with a 47-31 win over Brantford North Park. Taylor (15), Klein (11 PTS & 10 REB), and guard Julia Pavlik (11) were all in double-digits for WCI; Ali DeLorenzi provided the bulk of NPC's offense with a 15-point effort.
St. John's defeated Guelph Bishop Mac in the other semifinal; scoring details were not immediately available.

Junior Draw - Jacob Hespeler Hawks Invitational
Now have the Junior Side of the draw to pass along as well. It features 6 teams from WCSSAA and 2 from the D10 league, so it should give us a nice idea of comparative strength in those leagues.
Here it is:
Today's Games
3:00pm - Jacob Hespeler vs. Galt
4:30pm - Southwood vs. JF Ross
6:00pm - Lourdes vs. Elmira
7:30pm - SJAM vs. Bluevale
....same format for tomorrow's games as the draw below.

Senior JHSS Tournament Set To Tip This Afternoon
Jacob Hespeler in Cambridge will be hosting their annual tournament today; I've heard it's a junior-senior affair as they have the two full gyms over there --- more to come when I get the junior draw but I have the senior one at this point to pass along.
Brackets indicate current "CWOSSA ranking".
Friday - 1st Round Games
3:00pm: (4) Jacob Hespeler vs. Pauline Johnson
4:30pm: Galt vs. Kitchener St. Mary's
6:00pm: (HM) Grand River vs. Kincardine DSS
7:30pm: (5) Bluevale CI vs. Centre Wellington
Saturday Games
Consolation Semifinals: 9am & 10:30am
Championship Semifinals: Noon & 1:30pm
Consolation Final: 4:30pm
3rd Place Game: 6:00pm
Championship Final: 7:30pm
....wide range of teams and the "best" first-round matchup would look to be Grand River against Kincardine. Though GRCI enters that one as a strong favourite, KDSS is no slouch --- they were up 8 on WCSSAA school Elmira DSS at halftime in a recent tournament game before falling in the second half. The Rens definitely can't take them lightly.
As for a "tournament pick", I'll take JHSS over Grand River in the tournament final. Given that those teams played a great game yesterday, if that comes to fruition it may be one that's worth checking out.
