It's early, but the Resurrection Phoenix have risen to the top of the D8 junior and senior girls basketball standings.
The Phoenix picked up their fifth win in as many games in both leagues combined; the junior Phoenix knocked off Monsignor Doyle 41-25 while the seniors trounced the 'Stangs by a 52-12 final.
In the junior contest, Celia McGlynn poured in 18 points while Patricia Enrique added 6. Victoria Borosso (9) and Yasmine Smith (7) were the top performers for MDCSS.
The Rez seniors were led by a solid 24-point outing from rookie guard Sarah Schulz. Angelika Jarski added 6 more for RCSS; the Monsignor Doyle scoring details were unavailable.
In Cambridge, St. Benedict and St. Mary's split their junior-senior doubleheader, with the junior Saints victorious 47-25 while the senior Eagles turned the tables in a 38-15 win to stay tied for first place with Resurrection (2-0).
On the senior side, Sydney Greulich netted 9 while Beth Zabib added 8 for SMHS; junior scoring was again led by the Saints' Kayla Leusink (13) and Afifa Salaad (11). Becca Siewerk had 9 for the junior Eagles.
The other D8 game on Monday was in the junior division, and unlike the games above it was a nail-biter to the end.
Pere-Rene de Galinee (PRDG) defeated Rockway 28-27, backed by an 18-point effort from Christine Boileau. Emily Vos had a game-high 22 for the Flames.
