I've been hearing some good things about the junior squad at Grand River CI in Kitchener this year, and although they have just one league game (a dominant win) under their belt --- we got a bit more of an idea of their potential strength this past weekend.
The Renegades won the St. Mike's tournament with ease, besting a field that included three D8 teams (St. Benedict, St. Mary's and St. David) as well as Patrick Fogarty (Orillia), and the co-hosts from Stratford St. Mike's and Stratford Northwestern.
A returnee from last year's team that made a CWOSSA appearance, Mackenzie Miller, and grade nine standout Tara DeBoer are certainly two players to watch.
Bishop Mac Celtics Win at Eastwood
The Bishop Mac Celtics snuck past St. Thomas Aquinas of London 32-30 to capture the 5th annual Eastwood CI junior girls' basketball tournament over the weekend in Kitchener.
The Celts knocked off Kitchener Resurrection in the semifinals, and started their weekend with a comfortable win over Stratford Central.
Aquinas defeated Sarnia St. Christopher in their semifinal game, who knocked off Rez by a 49-28 count in the 3rd place game.
Kitchener Collegiate took the consolation final with a 31-23 win over Stratford Central.
