Saints Invitational Round of 16: WCI 50, Resurrection 40

In a battle between two "top 10" CWOSSA teams, the WCI Vikings pulled away in the waning moments to register a double-digit 50-40 victory over the Resurrection Phoenix in "round of 16" action at the Saints Invitational in Cambridge.

Though the game was closer than the score might indicate (WCI led by 2 with about 3:30 to play before registering the final 8 points of the game on 2 field goals and free throws), the Vikings actually never trailed throughout the contest --- always maintaining a slim advantage.

The Vikes led by 6 (23-17) after the first-half, and got things to as many as 8 before Resurrection came back to cut things within 2.  The Phoenix actually had things within a single point before Zach Totzke hit WCI's only three-pointer of the game from the right corner to put WCI up 4.

The play of Dani Elgadi was huge for WCI, as he finished with 20 points and 8 rebounds.  His length caused problems for Rez all night, as he blocked at least 3 three-point attempts by Rez shooters.  Speaking of three-point shooting, the usual smooth stroke of the Phoenix from distance abandoned them on this night as they finished just 1-for-17 (5.8%) from beyond the arc.

Alongside Elgadi's 20, Malcolm Piazza finished with 9 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists, while Jacob Ranton added 8 points and 11 rebounds.  The big difference in this one may have been the job that Elgadi and Ranton did on the offensive glass, as they got themselves (and their teammates) a few second-chance buckets.

Cory Kenning led Rez with 10, while Stephen Cordle had a solid effort off the bench, making all 4 of his field goal attempts for an 8 point effort.  John Moi had 7, although he was limited in minutes due to foul trouble.

The Vikes played without starting PG Adam Anagnostopoulos, who was unavailable for this contest.
