Junior Tournament Update: Ontario All-Catholic

Interestingly enough, of the three CWOSSA teams at the All-Ontario Catholic Junior Boys tournament in Hamilton (Bishop Mac/Rez/St. Mary's), the only team to continue to play into Sunday will be the St. Mary's Eagles.

The Eagles lost their opening game to Hamilton Cathedral 61-48, but rebounded to defeat Welland Notre Dame 50-36 in the consolation quarterfinal. They will play the winner of Ancaster Bishop Tonnos and London St. Thomas Aquinas tomorrow morning at Bishop Tonnos.

To be fair to Bishop Mac and Rez, both squads had very tough draws.

Bishop Mac (Junior CWOSSA #1) was able to defeat a very tough team in Mississauga Father Goetz in the first round 62-55. Michael Clouthier poured in 17 points for BMac.

In the championship quarterfinal, Bishop Mac battled the host school, St. Thomas More. The Celtics were down 7 in the fourth quarter, but battled back to grab a one point lead. At this point, I took a cell phone call in the hallway to make some plans for tomorrow's Superbowl party. What did I miss in that brief time away? Well....... a lot.

By the time I came back in, the Celtics were down 9. Yes, 9. Apparently, the Knights had a couple of "favourable" and-one calls and two technical fouls were called on Bishop Mac head coach Gabe Frank --- ejecting him from the game.

My girlfriend, and I quote, said they were "the worst sequence of calls" she has seen in a high school basketball game.

The Celts kept fighting but STM made their free throws down the stretch. The final score was 57-49 for St. Thomas More.

Meanwhile, the CWOSSA #5 Resurrection Phoenix lost to the current #1 team in the Hamilton league, the Cardinal Newman Cardinals by a 45-34 score in the first round. Mark Radcliffe led Rez with 11 points.

In their second game, Rez lost to Burlington Notre Dame 60-38. The Irish nailed 4 consecutive three-pointers during a 1:00 stretch in the first half to give themselves a bit of a cushion and never looked back.

D'Youville (Brampton) 57, Notre Dame (Welland) 21
