D8 Wednesday: Junior Saints Stun Celtics in OT

The St. Benedict Saints rallied in the final minute to force overtime, and then came out on the winning side of a thrilling 69-64 game against the St. David Celtics in D8 junior action yesterday afternoon in Cambridge.

Though St. Benedict led 20-9 in the first quarter, the Celtics patiently whittled away at the deficit and took their first lead in the fourth quarter.  With :34 left in the game, an Alec Scheffler bucket pushed the lead to 4 points.

However, St. Benedict quickly went the other way for an "and one" that cut the deficit to 1 (61-60).  A 1-of-2 trip to the line from James McBride left the door open and the Saints took advantage by tying the game with just :05 on the clock.

In OT, both teams had glorious chances.  St. Benedict scored the first 5 points of OT to lead 67-62 before George Dumitru scored the Celtics' first basket (67-64) and just :24 to go.  St. David then forced a steal, but were unable to convert on an open opportunity --- giving St. Benedict the chance to close this one out.

Alex Douglas led the Saints with 20 points, while Justin Malnerich and Zubair Seyed added 15 each.

Scheffler was certainly the player of the game despite the losing effort, as he certainly notched double-digit rebounds for SDCSS while also pouring home 26 points.  Dumitru added 20 more for St. David.

Needless to say, it was a huge win for St. Benedict as they are now 7-1 and two games clear in the loss column of 3rd place St. David (5-3) and 4th place Resurrection (4-3).

Here's a look at the other games from Wednesday:
