Saints Invitational (Senior): CWOSSA Teams Face Tough Opposition; Fail To Reach Finals

After being spoiled the last couple of seasons with local teams making the championship finals, including St. Mary's (finalists - 2012), Resurrection (champions - 2011) and Forest Heights (finalists - 2011), it was the "out of town" teams that rose to the top of the 25th annual "Saints Invitational" over the weekend.

As expected, my two projected finalists, Brampton D'Youville and Windsor Catholic Central, dominated their opposition for the most part on the way to the final.  D'Youville's lone challenge came from Kitchener St. Mary's, who played a competitive game but still wound up on the short end of a 66-50 score.

Here's a PDF of the complete results from all teams.

D'Youville ended up taking the championship in a hotly-contested 70-64 game over Catholic Central, with tournament MVP Rayon Miller pouring in 22 points.  Mychal Mulder had a game-high 26 for the Comets.

A CWOSSA bright spot was certainly the emergence of grade 11 PG Tyrick Thompson (St. Mary's), who averaged 20.0 PPG for the tournament as was named as a 1st team tournament all-star.  Thompson netted 25 against Sarnia St. Christopher, 15 versus St. Anne (Windsor) and 20 against D'Youville for a solid weekend on his part.

The all-stars were as follows:

First Team:  Rayon Miller (D'Youville / MVP), Josiah Riley (D'Youville), Mychal Mulder (Catholic Central), Tyrick Thompson (St. Mary's), Mitch Mazzuca (St. Basil).

Second Team:  Luke Allin (Ursuline), Zach MacQuaid (St. Theresa / Midland), Djorje Dmitri (St. Anne), Jesse Kendall (Bishop Mac), Marcus Calloo (Catholic Central).
