Brantford Expositor: Undefeated Teams to Battle

Sarah Minutillo makes the pass (Expositor Photo)
Article By:  Brian Smiley

The North Park Collegiate Trojans senior girls basketball team will get an idea of where it stands Tuesday night.

In one of the premier matchups in Brant County high school action this fall, the undefeated St. John's College Green Eagles (3-0) host the undefeated Trojans (3-0) at 5:30 p.m.

"I haven't seen them play at all this year," said NPC coach Andrea Hawkins about the defending Brant County champions.

"I know they're not as strong as they've been in the past but they have Kendra Van Leeuwen, who is phenomenal, and Megan Thompson coming back for them is a huge help."

Hawkins said she thinks the Trojans match up well against the Eagles.

"It will all depend on how we handle their pressure," she said.

"That's the one thing we struggle with every year we play them. I would hope we'll give them a game."

The coach said that the Trojans benefit from having Sarah Minutillo at guard.

"Sarah Minutillo is a phenomenal ball handler and sees the floor very well," said Hawkins, adding that the point guard is one of the best players she's coached in her nearly two-decade career at NPC.

The Trojans also lean heavily on fifth-year player Abbey Johnston, another guard.

"Sarah Minutillo and Abbey Johnston are phenomenal," Hawkins said.

"They defend well, they see the floor well, they handle the ball well.

"They're excellent leaders."

Last year, the Trojans finished third during the Brant County regular season and were eliminated in the semifinals.

Hawkins' roster this season includes just eight names, up one from last season.

While comfortable with a small bench, the coach said it can provide challenges.

"We love to run and we love to press and we're very good at it but, at the same time, I have to be cautious because we get tired."

Joining Minutillo and Johnston in the starting five are Gabby Marton, another returnee from last year, Brooke Cesar and Julia Rankin.

Hattie Osborne, a guard who was on the team a year ago but saw no action because of a broken finger, is back. She'll be used for many minutes, along with forwards Arden Grob and Sam Rossi.

With such a small group, Hawkins is working with junior coach Becky Polidori to make sure her team gets proper practice.

"One of the things we're doing differently this year is Becky (Polidori) and I are practising the junior and seniors together on Monday nights," said Hawkins.

"And then, on Wednesday nights, I have my junior boys from last year coming out and playing with us so we can push the girls a little bit."

Right now Hawkins is trying to get the team to work on communication and balancing the floor.
"We struggle initiating offence and boxing out on defence," she said.

With the potential for four Grade 12s to return next season - Minutillo and Rossi are almost certain to come back while Halle Sitarski may return after suffering a torn ACL and Marton is debating a return - Hawkins should be loaded in 2015.

However, the focus is squarely on the current season.

"Our goal is to make city finals," said Hawkins, who is being helped on the bench by former SJC and Brock University standout, Jessica Del Signore.

"It's a great group. They're competitive, they want to win and they work hard. They have fun and they get it. It's a really, really good group."

NOTE: It is the home team's responsibility to e-mail results to The Expositor's sports department - brex.sports@sunmedia.ca - as soon as possible after each game. Results submitted by 8:30 p.m. on game days will appear in the next day's paper.

D10: Tuesday Picks

YTD:  11-2 (.846)

One game to mention from yesterday, which saw the Bishop Mac Celtics handle Orangeville by a 52-13 final.  Cindy Seke (15) and Marcella Gadzinska (13) were the top Bishop Mac scorers; Paige Burns and Tori Caravalho had 4 each for the Bears.

There's three games to talk about today:

CWDHS (0-4) at Orangeville (0-5)
My Pick:  CWDHS by 11
One of these teams will pick up their first win of the season here; the Falcons seem like the favourite to do so.

St. James (2-2) at Lourdes (2-2)
My Pick:  OLOL by 11
Interesting game here that will help to break up the logjam of teams in the middle of the D10 pack.  I'll take the homecourt Crusaders here, though it could certainly be interesting.

Bishop Mac (5-0) at Centennial (4-0)
My Pick:  BMAC by 6
Game of the day here between the top two teams in the league and the remaining unbeatens.  I'll go with the Celtics to pick up the road win, although I certainly wouldn't be surprised to see it go either way.

WCSSAA: Tuesday Picks

YTD:  17-3 (.850)

A couple of interesting and competitive games on the schedule, so we'll start with those:

KCI (0-2) at Southwood (2-1)
My Pick:  KCI by 9
Have to throw the records out the window, as KCI has losses to two of the top teams in the league (WCI & Bluevale) to this point.  I think the Raiders should be able to break their losing streak today at the expense of the Southwood Sabres.

Bluevale (3-0) at Jacob Hespeler (3-0)
My Pick:  JHSS by 4
Undoubtedly the game of the day here, between two of the remaining 4 WCSSAA unbeatens.  I expect a similar close game to their tournament match-up earlier this month, with homecourt edge aiding the Hawks in a tight one.

Huron Heights (0-3) at Forest Heights (0-2)
My Pick:  HHSS by 8
The Huron Heights Huskies have a bit more firepower on the offensive end, and I think they should be able to sneak past the Forest Heights Trojans on the road here today.

WCI (2-1) at WODSS (0-2)
My Pick:  WCI by 41
Assuming W-O's basket/net issue has been fixed since Thursday, look for the WCI Vikings to win big here.

Preston (0-2) at Cameron Heights (3-0)
My Pick:  CHCI by 33
The Cameron Heights Golden Gaels will stay perfect on the season --- and on their shiny new gym floor --- today against Preston.

Elmira (2-1) at Grand River (2-0)
My Pick:  GRCI by 19
The Lancers could end up being my darkhorse team by the end of the season, but the Rens will be too much for Elmira at this point.

SJAM (2-1) at Eastwood (1-2)
My Pick:  SJAM by 14
Big game in the standings for both these teams, but the edge on paper appears to go to the SJAM Highlanders.

D8: Monday Results

Senior
St. David 36, Monsignor Doyle 21
My Pick:  No Pick
A big game as far as "AAA" CWOSSA is concerned, and the Celts took it by 15 at home.  Maria Valencia had 12 to lead the Celts, while Heather Sandall added 8.  Yasmeen Smith put home 10 points for Doyle.

St. Benedict 43, Woodland 31
My Pick:  SBCSS by 24
The Cavs hung around in Cambridge, but the Saints stayed undefeated on the season.  Julia Mascarenhas (12) and Amber Baetsen (10) were double-digit scorers for St. Benedict, while Kirstin Hofstee had a game-high 16 for WCHS.

Resurrection 19, St. Mary's 8
My Pick:  RCSS by 22
No....that's not a typo.  The Phoenix struggled mightily against the Eagle zone, and star guard CC McGlynn was unable to get untracked offensively.  As such, leading Rez scorers were Shannon Walls (4) and Rachel Engel (3).  Brittany Gulic had a game-high 5 for Mary's.

D8 Senior Standings
1.  St. Benedict 4-0
2.  St. David 4-1
3.  Resurrection 3-1
4.  Mons. Doyle 2-2
5.  Woodland 1-3
6.  St. Mary's 1-4
7.  Rockway 0-4

Junior
Resurrection 52, St. Mary's 31
Despite scoring 28 of St. Mary's 31 points, Summer Pahl's effort was not enough as the Phoenix won this battle of two "top 10" CWOSSA teams.  Krissia Vasquez had 15 and Jama Bin-Edward 11 for Rez.

St. Benedict 34, Woodland 11
The Saints handled the Cavs at home, with Makayla Cabral contributing 9 points and Tereza Borges adding 6.  Jasmine DeWeerd had 4 for Woodland.

D8 Junior Standings
1.  Resurrection 3-0
T2.  St. Mary's 3-1
T2.  St. Benedict 3-1
4.  St. David 2-2
5.  Rockway 0-3
6.  Woodland 0-4

D8: Monday Picks....+ 1 D10 Pick

YTD:  10-1 (.909)

Two games on the D8 radar today.

Ed Note:  Due to a website issue, was not aware of the MDCSS-SDCSS game prior to the picks column.

As for the picks:

St. Mary's (2-2) at Resurrection (1-1)
My Pick:  RCSS by 22
I like Rez to win big in this 4:30pm senior tilt which is worth going early to if you'd like to catch two of my "top 10" junior teams (RCSS/SMHS) in action.

Woodland (1-2) at St. Benedict (3-0)
My Pick:  SBCSS by 24
The Saints should continue their D8 winning streak today at the expense of the Woodland Cavaliers.

Meanwhile, over in D10, undefeated Bishop Mac (4-0) takes on Orangeville (0-4).  Look for another big Bishop Mac win here --- I'll go BMAC by 42.

Senior: Jacob Hespeler Takes Silver at Queen's Invitational

The Jacob Hespeler Hawks took the Silver Medal this past weekend in Kingston, winning their first three games before dropping the championship final to La Citadelle (Cornwall).

More details to follow....

Senior: No Hardware For CWOSSA Teams At Shoot For The Cure

There was no championship hardware for the four CWOSSA teams out of the 12 in contention at Bishop Mac's annual "Shoot For the Cure" event, although the Bishop Mac Celtics could certainly argue that they might be deserving of some.

The Celtics lost a nail-biter to eventual tournament champions Welland Centennial by a 60-59 score in overtime in the tournament opener (Dianne Priamo, with 17 and Marcela Gadzinska's 12 led the way for BMAC).  Welland Centennial would go on to run the table and take the tournament crown.

Bishop Mac's other pool game also fell into the nail-biting category as it was a 41-40 win over Etobicoke CI, with Rachael DiGravio leading the way with a 13-point effort.

The second place finish by Bishop Mac in their pool advanced them to a consolation semifinal, where they got some more "close game experience" but fell 53-49 to Waterdown.  Cindy Seke was the top Celtic in that game with 11.

Waterloo Bluevale also advanced to the consolation semifinals --- they defeated Guelph Lourdes 46-28 in their opener, with Rachael Hamm and Julia Curran contributing 13 each in the win.  Rainey Psenicka (10) was Lourdes' high scorer in that one.

The Knights would drop their second game to ES Theriault (Timmins) 55-38, with Curran again pacing the way (11 points).  Theriault was all over Lourdes to the tune of 57-12 in the other pool game (Rainey Psenicka had 5 for the Crusaders).

The Knights would bow out of the consolation bracket after a 51-45 loss to Stratford Central, despite 21 points from Curran.

St. David went 0-2 in their pool games, 53-22 to Waterdown (Megan Goar, 9) and 49-27 to Lo-Ellen Park (Elizabeth Scanlon, 6).

In "friendly" games for teams that went winless in pool play on Saturday, St. David lost to Etobicoke CI 34-29 (Goar, 13), while Lourdes finished their tournament with a win over Burlington Assumption by a 38-26 score (Hannah McIntosh, 19).

Semifinal scores saw Ancaster take out ES Theriault 42-40 and Welland Centennial nip Lo-Ellen Park 39-35.  Centennial then took the title by a 43-27 score.

Senior: Grand River Takes Centennial Tournament Title

Despite being down a few bodies (as you can see from the picture), the Grand River Renegades were victorious in Guelph this past weekend, going 3-0 at the Centennial Senior Girls' Tournament.

The Rens knocked off St. Paul (Niagara Falls) 54-41 in round one.  Unfortunately, speaking of being shorthanded, the two bottom teams in the 8-team draw, Oakwood and Newmarket, were late scratches but the organizers were able to pull together the Centennial Junior team to face off against the Rens.

The much more experienced Renegades won that one, 48-23, and there were many comments from Centennial supporters about how well the Rens handled the situation (and their overmatched opponent):

In the tournament final, Grand River took on the Centennial seniors, who had defeated both Resurrection and St. Marcellinus (Mississauga) to advance to the final.

The game was tight early on, with the Rens holding a 22-20 halftime edge before pulling away a bit in the second half for a 56-39 victory.

Grand River is back to WCSSAA play this week, with games against Elmira and Forest Heights.

Senior: Green Eagles Impress at St. Mary's Tip-Off

The St. John's Green Eagles proved over the weekend that they aren't just one of the top teams in CWOSSA --- but also one of the top teams in the province.

At the competitive St. Mary's Tip-Off Classic, the Green Eagles went 3-0 in pool play before dropping a 41-31 decision to Pickering HS in the tournament's semifinal.

In pool play, the Green Eagles were on their offensive game, scoring 58+ points in each of their three wins.  They started out by defeating Oakville Loyola 68-47 on Friday, then followed that up with wins on Saturday over Brampton Campion (67-56) and Waterloo CI (58-29).

The Vikes were the only other CWOSSA team in the event, and went 0-3 in pool play with losses to Campion (44-27) and Loyola (47-45).

Kendra Van Leeuwen was named to the tournament's all-star team.

HooptownGTA has a complete recap of the scores.  Bill Crothers' Excellence Program (who are not eligible for OFSAA) took the championship final, 39-34 over Pickering.

At the bottom of the bracket, the semifinal goes tonight at 6pm, with the consolation semifinal at 7:30.

Championship final is scheduled for 1:30pm tomorrow at Centennial.

Catholic Central (London) vs. Resurrection

Sarnia Northern vs. St. Matthew (Ottawa)

Senior Girls: Bishop Mac "Shoot For The Cure" Draw

Bishop Mac's annual "Shoot For the Cure" Senior Girls' tournament is set to go this weekend; this year's version is a 12-team event featuring four pools of three teams.

D10: Thursday Results

Senior
Bishop Mac 36, JF Ross 21
My Pick:  BMAC by 18
The Royals stayed unbeaten with a win in a defensive battle at home versus JF Ross.  Ellie Young led the way for BMAC with 9, while Tiana Sullivan, Cindy Seke and Jess Burke all had 6 each.  Ali Darling and Claire Sutherns had 5 apiece for JFR.

St. James 55, CWDHS 29
My Pick:  STJ by 27
The Lions had three players in double figures -- Donna Zen (14), Meghan Santi (13) and Caroline Bombino (10) as they took the win at home.  Kayla Teeter was the top Falcon, with 9 points.

Centennial 54, Lourdes 50
My Pick:  CCVI by 13
The Spartans stayed unbeaten, but it wasn't easy at home against the Crusaders.  Carter Godman (17) and Emma Cain (10) paced the winners, while Natasha Martinez (13) and Rainey Psenicka (10) were the top Lourdes scorers.

Guelph CVI 86, Orangeville 12
My Pick:  GCVI by 32
Wow.  86 points is certainly the most I've seen scored in a long time -- and it was a balanced attack that did it, with 5 Gaels in double-figures:  Sydney Wilson (18), Ijeoma Staunton (15), Roshni Patel (12), Rachelle Clayton (12) and Cally Strongman (11).  Paige Burns was the top Bear with 6.

D10 Senior Standings
T1.  Bishop Mac 4-0

T3.  JF Ross 2-2
T3.  Lourdes 2-2
T3.  St. James 2-2
T7.  CWDHS 0-4
T7.  Orangeville 0-4

Junior D10
Lourdes 40, Centennial 27
The Crusaders went on the road and took down the previously unbeaten Spartans.  Jada Codrington had a game-high 17 for Lourdes, with Robyn Hudecki adding 14.  Paige Heffernan led CCVI with 10.

GCVI 25, Orangeville 15
Low-scoring affair here that went the way of the Gaels.  Cassie Reynolds (7) and Kristin Kohlmeir (6) were the top GCVI scorers, while Lindsay Grant had 7 to lead Orangeville.

St. James 28, CWDHS 23
The Lions nipped the Falcons at home, with Sophia Lago leading the way for the Lions, scoring 10 points.  Grace Rooney led CWHDS -- and all scorers -- with 14.

Bishop Mac 36, JF Ross 14
The Celts are now alone at the top of the D10 standings after their 4th straight win.  Sophia Nash (10) and Leah Parisotto (6) were the high point scorers for BMAC; Catie Terrey's 8 topped the Royal scoresheet.

WCSSAA: Thursday Results

Before we get to the results, there was one postponement in WCSSAA play yesterday, as the FHCI-WODSS game didn't get off the ground due to a net/rim issue out in Baden.

That game will be rescheduled for a later date.

So, here were the 6 games that were completed yesterday, starting in Senior:

Cameron Heights 46, Eastwood 6
My Pick:  CHCI by 35
No trouble for the Gaels on the road as they moved to 3-0.  Salome Mekasha had 15 and Hunter Johns 10 for the Gaels, while Mel Samuel netted all 6 for ECI.

WCI 71, Huron Heights 16
My Pick:  WCI by 32
The Vikings exploded for a 71-point outburst on Thursday, keyed by 16 from Kaylee Anagnostopoulos and 13 by Sierra Clancy.  Aly Jacobs led the way for the Huskies with 8.

Elmira 34, Galt 24
My Pick:  EDSS by 5
A big 21-point performance from Elmira's Nicole Cressman surged the Lancers to the victory in this one.  Karley Sider added 5 more for the Lancers, while Emma Buck (12) and Sophie Caiton (8) were the top Ghost performers.

Grand River 57, SJAM 15
My Pick:  GRCI by 21
Definitely wasn't a letdown by the Rens on Thursday, as they dominated on both ends in a win over SJAM.  Nyamuoch Teny (17) and Maya Day (13) led the way for the Rens, while Milica Koprivica was the 'Lander high scorer with 9.

Bluevale 35, KCI 27
My Pick:  KCI by 3
The "game of the day" was certainly a hotly-contested affair, with the Knights managing to snag a road win at KCI.  Big performance again was had by Julia Curran, who put home 21 points in the win, while Kiera Grien added 4 for BCI.  Alia Hazineh (11) and Michaela Schlumberger (9) led the Raiders.

Jacob Hespeler 46, Southwood 25
My Pick:  JHSS by 17
Candice Wright (18) was a force inside for the Hawks in their win over Southwood.  Jasmine Ramcharan and Shianne Riggan added 6 more each for Hespeler, while Taylor White (15) and Megan Cole (7) led the Sabres.

Cameron Hts. 40, Eastwood 17
The Gaels picked up their first win on the season, with Tamara Grahovac netting 13 and Zoe Hoyte 10 in the process.  Emma Miller led the way for the Rebels with 6, while Shayenne McKenzie added 4.

D10: Thursday Picks

YTD:  6-2 (.750)

Hoping for better than the 2-2 record from Tuesday, here goes with these picks:

JF Ross (2-1) at Bishop Mac (3-0)
My Pick:  BMAC by 18
The Celtics should be able to keep their perfect record intact today at home against the JF Ross Royals.

Lourdes (2-1) at Centennial (3-0)
My Pick:  CCVI by 13
The Spartans have been impressive in the early going, and Lourdes has some offensive firepower to make this interesting but I like Centennial to be ahead at the end.

Orangeville (0-3) at Guelph CVI (1-2)
My Pick:  GCVI by 32
Look for the Gaels to get back in the win column today at home against Orangeville.

CWDHS (0-3) at St. James (1-2)
My Pick:  STJ by 27
After a couple of losses against "top 3" D10 teams, the Lions should be able to even up their record here today at home against the Falcons.

WCSSAA: Thursday Picks

YTD:  12-2 (.857)

Grand River (1-0) at SJAM (2-0)
My Pick:  GRCI by 21
Provided they don't have much of a letdown after their big win over the WCI Vikings, look for the Rens to handle the SJAM Highlanders on the road today.

Cameron Heights (2-0) at Eastwood (1-1)
My Pick:  CHCI by 35
The Gaels have a pretty decent early season schedule; I actually see them going 6-0 before a big match-up against GRCI in October.  First things first, they beat Eastwood here today.

Bluevale (2-0) at KCI (0-1)
My Pick:  KCI by 3
Biggest game of the day right here, between two (now) AAA teams --- so this game may have some implications down the road, as well.  Seems to be all about match-ups with these teams, and I'll give the slight edge to KCI at home here.

Elmira (1-1) at Galt (0-2)
My Pick:  EDSS by 5
Coin-flip that could certainly go either way here; I'll take a shot with the visiting Lancers today.

Southwood (2-0) at Jacob Hespeler (2-0)
My Pick:  JHSS by 17
Battle between two undefeated Cambridge teams; I think the Hespeler Hawks are too strong at home and should move to 3-0 today.

Forest Heights (0-2) at WODSS (0-2)
My Pick:  FHCI by 4
Another potentially tight-game; I see this as a low-scoring affair out in Baden and I'll take the Forest Heights Trojans to (possibly) eke out a win.

Huron Heights (0-2) at WCI (1-1)
My Pick:  WCI by 32
The Huskies pick a bad time to run into an angry WCI Vikings squad, fresh off a nail-biting loss to GRCI.  Vikes should win big at home today.

D8: Wedneday Results

Senior
St. Mary's 31, Rockway 19
My Pick:  SMHS by 9
The Eagles picked up their first win of the campaign on Wednesday, with Mallory Gitzell (11) and Brittany Gulic (5) leading the way.  Kat Klassen scored 8 and Courtney Brubacher 6 for the Flames.

St. David 65, Woodland 21
My Pick:  SDCSS by 12
After a competitive game against Rez to start the year, and doubling up on St. Mary's in their second game, the Woodland Cavaliers were a bit flat in Waterloo on Wednesday, to say the least.  Bobbi-Sue Hentges (17) and Ciarra Dunne (15) topped the scoresheet for the Celtics, while Kirstin Hofstee (7) was the leader for Woodland.

D8 Senior Standings
1.  St. Benedict 3-0
2.  Monsignor Doyle 2-0
3.  St. David 3-1
4.  Resurrection 1-1
5.  Woodland 1-2
6.  St. Mary's 1-3
7.  Rockway 0-4

* - note:  The above standings differ from the D8 website as I've sorted mine based upon winning percentage, due to the discrepancy in games played (e.g., 2 for MDCSS vs. 4 for three other teams).

Junior
St. David 40, Woodland 19
Emily White had 10 points to top a balanced St. David attack, with Kara Dietz and Hannah Blair adding 6 each.  Kaitlyn DeWeerd had 6 to top Woodland.

St. Mary's over Rockway
(No scoring details were available from source)

D8 Junior Standings
1.  St. Mary's 3-0
2.  Resurrection 2-0
3.  St. Benedict 2-1
4.  St. David 2-2
T5.  Rockway 0-3
T5.  Woodland 0-3

If you ask Hannah Haviland and some of her fellow Grade 12 teammates, they probably can’t remember the last time they won a basketball game.

That is until Tuesday.

Haviland was a presence down in the post, scoring a game-high 10 points to lead the Waterford Wolves to a 19-14 victory over the Valley Heights Bears in the opening game of the Norfolk Secondary School Athletic Association senior girls basketball season.

“We didn’t win any games last year,” Haviland said. “We almost came close, but it’s really been a long time. I really can’t remember.

“It’s so exciting to win this,” she said. “It really gives all of us so much confidence.”

And to do it in probably the Wolves biggest game of the regular season is the big bonus.

“It’s a pretty big game for us. We know if we beat Valley, we get a chance to play at CWOSSA (Central Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association championships),” Haviland said. “So for us it was a win or die game. This is an amazing win for us.”

And because it was a pivotal game for both squads, despite it being the first of the season, the nerves were at an all-time high.

“A lot of the girls were nervous before the game because they knew it was a big one,” Haviland said. “But everyone stayed strong, and played great.”

And the nerves showed early, as the Bears came out roaring, taking a quick 7-0 lead, which turned into a 9-5 deficit at the half.

“We just had to play our game,” Wolves coach Dan Avey said. “It really is a confidence thing. Once they got a couple of baskets and realized they could score, they got confident. I couldn’t be happier for this group. It’s been a long time, I can’t even remember when they’ve won a game.”

While Haviland led with 10 points, a bushel basket of rebounds and more than a handful of blocks, Olivia Graham pitched in with seven, with Danielle Hiltz adding a pair.

Claudia Klassen and Amy Reimer each scored five points to lead all Bears scorers, with Brianna Spanics and Becky VanGroningen adding two each.

“We were definitely good on our inbounds and defence,” Haviland said. “We were able to grab a lot of rebounds after they shot, which was huge for us. “

Avey said it was also nice to see a couple of different players get on the scoresheet.

“That’s what we’ll need to be successful,” Avey said. “We’ve got a well-rounded group of kids. As long as they keep learning and progressing, we’ll have a fun year.”

Haviland agrees.

“I think we have a pretty decent team,” she said. “We have different kinds of players. We have some new, some players that have been here a while. It’s a great learning experience for us to work together as we move on this year.”

On Thursday, the Wolves are on the road, when they take on the Holy Trinity Titans at 3:30 p.m.

In junior action Tuesday, the Wolves made it a sweep, as they defeated the Bears 11-9.

Leah Erwin led the Wolves with a four-point effort, while Elizabeth Marr added three. Emmie Ritteau and Bailey Donaldson each netted two points.

Julia Knelson led the bears with four points, while Leanne Aunnaun, and Sabrinna Matthison had two each, with Claire Weavr pitching in with one.
