It may have been the ugliest game of the BCSSAA senior boys' basketball season, but a win is a win, especially if you're the Assumption College Lions.
Coming off probably one of the most exciting fourth quarters of the season Tuesday, the Lions (3-5) extended their winning streak to three games with a 34-21 win over a very uninspired Pauline Johnson Collegiate Thunderbirds (2-6) team.
"It wasn't our best game, that's for sure," Lions' Nick Burdett said. "We started slow and kept on missing a lot of shots. Both teams were off tonight."
Burdett scored 10 points, eight of which came in the second quarter -the only digits the Lions were able to muster in the frame. Thankfully for the Lions, their guests had an even harder time putting the ball in a hoop that at times seemed as if there was a lid on it, only netting one free throw.
"We were so up after the game Tuesday," Burdett said. "It was hard to get focused for this one."
And that was evident in the first quarter, with the Thunderbirds grabbing a quick 5-0 lead thanks to Tyler Campbell's only points of the game. With four minutes left in the quarter, Andre Toic hit a three-pointer to finally get the Lions on the board and hit a jumper minutes into the second quarter to grab the lead they never relinquished.
Toic led all scorers with 18 points, while Nolan Drong added seven.
Zach Benin led the Thunderbirds with six points.
Burdett didn't want to make excuses for the poor offensive output, but he said the pace of the game hampered he and his teammates.
"We were being too touchy with the ball," Burdett said. "And we were turning the ball over way too much. We have to minimize things like that if we want to be successful."
To keep improving, Burdett said they have to work hard and show up for practice.
"We got a late start to the season and we're still learning the offence," Burdett said. "We really have to focus on leaning what the coaches are showing us."
But to contend with the elite teams in the league, defence is still the main focus.
"If we're solid defensively, it gives us a chance," Burdett said. "Against North Park and St. John's it'll have to be all about defence."
