The impressive run on the consolation side for the Galt CI Ghosts (which included a win over CWOSSA #7 Brantford North Park) came to an end on Saturday evening thanks to the hot three-point shooting from the St. Basil (SSM) Saints in a 61-41 consolation final defeat.
The Saints lit it up early and often against Galt's zone defense, as they quickly opened up a 32-16 lead by halftime.
Jack Simmons, who had a 34-point effort earlier on Saturday, was held in check by the Saints defense in this one; he put home a quick turnaround and a three-pointer in the third quarter to keep GCI alive (42-26 with 2:30 to play) but the Ghosts were unable to mount a serious comeback charge in the fourth.
St. Basil shot 26 of their 49 field goal attempts from beyond the arc, connecting on 10 of them. Leading the way was Richard Anderson, who hit 4-for-5 from deep. Six St. Basil players hit at least one three-pointer.
However, it was the Saints' ball movement that enabled so many good looks from deep. The Saints finished with a mind-boggling 17 assists on 23 field goals, which is very unusual to see at the high school level. As a comparison, only one NBA team in last night's action registered a higher percentage (Detroit Pistons - 23 assists on 31 field goals).
Anderson finished with 14, but St. Basil's top scorer, Cole Bertolissi, did the majority of his work from inside the arc --- finishing with 15 points on a very efficient 7-for-9 from the floor.
Gabe Vidal did some nice work on the interior for Galt, as he finishes with a team-high 14. Owais Khairi also finished with 14, as he did a nice job of drawing the foul on a three-point attempt twice in the second half. Simmons netted 7 for the Ghosts to round out their top three.
