D10 Senior Final: Falcons Pull Through Late Against Royals

Erica McFadden picked a great time to get hot.

With the score tied at 33-33 entering the fourth quarter, the Centre Wellington guard drilled a couple of key threes, made several driving layups and also came up huge on the defensive end as the Falcons came away with a 53-42 victory over the JF Ross Royals in the D10 senior final on Saturday night.

McFadden finished with 30 points, 21 of which came in the second half.

The Royals had their chances, but several unforced turnovers and poor free-throw shooting proved to be their undoing.

The game was generally close throughout.  Both teams could have grabbed a significant halftime lead (19-17 CW), but the Falcons' stars (McFadden and Jaime Janssen) were just 2-for-17 from the floor in the first half.  The Royals, meanwhile, shot just 2-for-12 from the charity stripe in the opening 16 minutes and only shot 7-for-28 from the floor themselves.

Both teams started to play to their capabilities in the third quarter, as the teams came close to equalling their first half output.

McFadden started to heat up, but every time it seemed as afthough the Falcons would "gap" the Royals, JF Ross maintained contact.  In fact, the Royals used a late 6-0 run off of jumpers from Silvie Cafarella, Emily Collins and Julia Robertson to take a 33-31 lead before McFadden tied things up at 33 entering the fourth.

In the opening minute of the fourth, McFadden drilled a three before coming up with a steal and a bucket on the ensuing Ross possession to give the Falcons a quick 5-point edge.

The big shift happened about 1:30 later, with the Falcons up three.  Hailey Salvian made an "and one", and though she missed the free-throw, the rebound came to Janssen who was fouled and converted both free-throws (in essence, a four-point possession).

The Royals would get no closer than six points down the stretch, with the Falcons pushing things to double-figures off a beautifully executed screen-and-roll between McFadden and Janssen with 3:00 to go.

The win was the Falcons' second consecutive D10 title, after they defeated GCVI in last year's championship game.

Alongside McFadden's 30, Jaime Janssen and Brenann Francis added 8 more each for CW, while Hailey Salvian had 6 to round out the Falcon scoring.

Sydney Resch had a solid shooting night for JF Ross, finishing with 19.  Other Royals hitting the scoresheet included Julia Robertson (10), Kayla Vande Kemp (6), Silvie Cafarella (3), Kelly Dunk (2) and Emily Collins (2).

Robertson came close to triple-double territory for the Royals, as she added in 7 rebounds and 8 assists in the loss.

Both squads had already secured berths in next week's CWOSSA "AAAA" playoffs in Brantford.

The junior final was captured by the Lourdes Crusaders, who for the second consecutive year knocked off the #1 seeded St. James Lions in the final (this time 37-23).  Monica Trimble (16) and Charlotte Case (12) paced the Crusaders, while Chelsey Gazzola led the Lions with 7.
