Sun Times: Falcons Wear Down Raiders in Final

Article By:  Bill Walker

The simple game plan worked out simply perfect for the OSCVI Falcons.

By pressuring West Hill's Maddie Lougheed and Christine Clark all over the court, the Falcons were able to disrupt the Raiders offence by frustrating their top two scorers.

That's all the Falcons needed as they beat West Hill 47-31 on Thursday in the Bluewater Athletic Association senior girls basketball final.

"The more tired they are, the harder it is for them to make their shots," said OSCVI's Georgia Ottewell, 16, who had 12 points and played a key role in frustrating Lougheed.

"I just try to get lots of pressure and not let her post me up because I'm a lot shorter than her. She doesn't like to dribble into pressure so we want to get on her and force her to give it up."

West Hill's dynamic duo were clearly tired as the game wore on, taking wild shots clearly out of frustration.

"It showed at the half that Maddie was tired and that carried on into the second half," said OSCVI assistant coach Jeff Cooper. "That's the game plan. We have to make them tired. We have great depth on our bench and we go 10 deep."

OSCVI advances to the CWOSSA AA championships, which are slated for Wednesday at Guelph's Our Lady of Lourdes. Sacred Heart also qualifies for the CWOSSA AA tournament, while West Hill will play host to a yet-to-be-determined opponent on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in a CWOSSA AAA senior girls qualifier.

"I think it took a lot of energy getting the ball up the floor," said West Hill coach Ken Lougheed. "Over the course of two games in one day, you start to see fatigue. And not just physical, but also mental. As the game progressed it was just evident that we didn't have the energy to (win)."

Maddie Lougheed led all scorers with 20 points, while Sarah Nicholls added six points.

Audrey Liskauskas led the Falcons with 13 points.

OSCVI earned a spot in the final with a 44-19 win over the Sacred Heart Crusaders.

Liskauskas had 10 points for the Falcons, while Keshia Jacques added nine.

Becky Quinn had seven points for the Crusaders, while Sam Weber added four.

West Hill pulled away late for a 29-20 win over the Walkerton District Raiders in the other semi.

Lougheed had 15 points, while Clark added eight for West Hill.

Kathleen Whale scored 10 points for Walkerton.

The junior final turned out to be a defensive struggle as Sacred Heart hung on for a 27-24 win over the Kincardine District Knights.

Sam Glasier led the Crusaders with eight points, while Victoria Carroll had six.

Kincardine's Jean Ann Keelan led all scorers with nine points.

"Both teams played exceptional defence," said Sacred Heart coach Becky Kroeplin. "I think we were both poking at each other to see what we were going to do because we do see each other twice (in BAA league play). We were feeling each other out to see if our playoff game was going to change from our league game."

The Crusaders now advance to the CWOSSA AA tournament on Wednesday at Guelph's Our Lady of Lourdes.

Kincardine will play host to the St. Mary's Mustangs at 2 p.m. on Monday to determine the other BAA team advancing to CWOSSA.

Sacred Heart advanced to the BAA final with a 39-32 win over St. Mary's.

Hannah Cassidy led the Mustangs with 13 points, while Allison VanSligtenhorst added 11.

Amber Smolenaars had 13 points for the Crusaders.

Kincardine beat the Peninsula Shores Phoenix 58-20 in the other semi.

Hailey Allen had 11 points for the Knights, while Heidi McLeod added nine.

Kendra Schultz led the Phoenix with 11 points.
