The Brant County high school senior boys basketball league is heating up and teams are getting a good idea of where they fit in.
Brantford Collegiate Institute Mustangs coach Bob Boos said he feels his team can be among the top four in the six-team league.
"A competitive team, yes," Boos said when assessing where he feels his team is at.
"We've played almost everybody in the league except PJ. We know we fit in. We know it's going to be a challenge to get in the top-three because I see St. John's, North Park and Assumption as where we want to fit in.
"If we want to be competitive we're going to have to come to practice, work hard and adjust to what they're doing."
On Tuesday night, BCI was scheduled to play PJ in an 8:30 p.m. game. The result was not available at deadline.
BCI's 12-man roster is one that includes some experienced veterans along with several junior graduates.
After two third-place finishes in tournaments so far this season, Boos said he thinks the team can improve, especially considering the effort players are putting into practice.
"I think we're better than that," he said of the two bronze-medal finishes. "The attitude is they come to practise and they're starting to work hard and see some of the benefits."
Because there was no season last year, Boos said he feels bad for the juniors who have come to senior. Those players, particularly ones who don't play club ball, have been forced to make the leap to a much faster game minus a year of junior experience.
The Mustangs, at least, can rely on veterans.
"I think we have a little bit of size. We've got someone like Chris Gorski who is six-foot-five," said Boos.
"Then we have a little bit of experience, someone like Mackenzie Mark who is like six-foot-two and he's a wingman who can shoot and drive.
"And we've got a point guard, Liam MacNeil, who hopefully can take care of the ball, and get some assists along the way.
"That's three guys who have played for me before."
Boos, who likes to use his entire roster when possible, will also depend on guards Dalton Mark and Tristan Almas as well as forward Liam Bielawski to play key minutes.
Boos feels his team has some height and can shoot the ball well at times and that they're starting to play good man-to-man defence.
With a 1-1 league record, and a long season ahead, where the team is in December doesn't concern him as much as where it is at when the playoffs roll around at the beginning of February.
"They're coming along," he said. "I'm not overly thrilled but it takes a while. It's only been a month."
