D8 Finals: Phoenix Sweep D8 Titles

The Resurrection Phoenix junior and senior girls swept the District 8 basketball finals on Friday evening at Resurrection; however, the two teams certainly took different routes in capturing their respective titles.

The junior Phoenix took their second consecutive crown by jumping on St. David early, taking a 30-14 lead at halftime and running away to a 48-26 win.

Celia McGlynn poured in 23 points for Rez, while Kelsey Caza added 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Other Phoenix on the scoresheet included Britney Haughton (6), Patricia Enrique (4), and Patricia McCullough (2).

For St. David, Heather Sandall led the way with 9 while Bobbi-Sue Hentges was held relatively in check by Rez's defense and finished with 7.  Also scoring for St. David were Maria Valencia (4), Sierra Dowling (4), and Abby Howard (2).

Meanwhile, on the senior side, the Phoenix could not get anything going on offense for (nearly) the first three quarters of the game.

After scoring 11 points in the first 22+ minutes of the game, the Phoenix used a 7-0 run in the final 1:30 of the third quarter to get momentum back on their side and cut St. Mary's advantage to 19-18 heading into the fourth quarter.

An Ellen McGowan bucket gave Rez the lead midway through the fourth, while a Sarah Schulz "and one" extended the lead to two possessions (25-21).  They would hold on down the stretch for a 29-24 win.

The Eagles locked down Sarah Schulz, who had just 7 field goal attempts in the game.  Thankfully for Rez, Angelika Jarski stepped up with an 11-point performance, while Schulz had 9 (most of which were very timely).  Ellen McGowan added 4, Marley Niescier 3, and Emma Higgins 2 to round out the Phoenix scoring.

Sydney Gruelich had 11 to led St. Mary's, while Alysha Hergott (4), Linda Huynh (3), Monica Januszek (2), Laura Kay (2), Emma Jada (1) and Beth Zabib (1) rounded out St. Mary's scorers.

Perhaps surprisingly, this was Resurrection's first D8 title since 1995.

Resurrection's win also advances them to next week's CWOSSA "AAAA" tournament hosted by District 10.

We'll have full recaps/articles tomorrow.
