Two WCSSAA clubs, the Galt Collegiate Ghosts and the Cameron Heights Golden Gaels, had solid starts to their respective seasons at the Pinky Lewis Senior Boys' Tournament this past weekend in Hamilton.
Both squads advanced out of their pools, with the Ghosts sweeping their three games while Cameron Heights advanced on +/- with a 2-1 record.
Galt started by defeating last year's OFSAA "AAA" silver medalists from Burlington Notre Dame (who are rebuilding after losing Grant Mullins to graduation), 60-45. Grade 11 rookie TJ Lall notched 21 in that game.
Galt would then demolish Holy Cross from St. Catherines 83-35 (Jack Simmons, 20) and get past Hamilton Sherwood 60-44 in their finale (Lall, 15).
Cameron Heights lost their opener to Georgetown DHS 47-42 (Vedran Dmitrovic, 15) but would rebound to defeat Hamilton Brebeuf 57-49 (Vlad Matovic, 14) and Dundas Parkside 56-52 (Dmitrovic, 16).
In the quarterfinals, Galt matched up against Hamilton Westmount, a team that you may remember from last year's OFSAA "AAAA" tournament, where Kitchener St. Mary's nipped them by one. The Wildcats still have many key players from that team back, including PF James Miles and G Matt Ravida.
In a back-and-forth contest, the Ghosts fell 64-60, despite a strong 19-point effort from Jack Simmons.
Dmitrovic was injured in Cameron Heights' QF game, a 70-57 loss to Oakville Holy Trinity. Matovic dropped 20 in that game for Cameron.
Matovic and Simmons were both named as second-team all-stars.
Dmitrovic was also featured by NorthPoleHoops.com in their recap of the tournament.
