The schedule for the annual Heinbuch Classic, one of the top tournaments in the province, has been released.
For those of you who may not know, the tournament "is named in honour of Court Heinbuch,
former Head Coach of the Cameron Heights Golden Gaels from 1969 to
1985. On February 12, 1985 Court passed away from a sudden heart attack.
As coach of the Golden Gaels, he led them to many successes, the
pinnacle being 1982-83, when they won 6 tournaments and the All-Ontario
AAA Championship."
You can check out the full schedule, as well as more about the history of the tournament on the tournament website.
A local (Kitchener-Waterloo) team has never won the tournament, which dates back to 1984. Kitchener CI (2004) made the final which is the closest that a WCSSAA or D8 team has come.
Brantford Assumption (1999) and Guelph St. James (1998) are CWOSSA teams that have won the tournament title.
Of note at this year's event? There are 7 CWOSSA teams this year, which is a bit of an "uptick" from the norm.
I'm personally happy to see the Centre Dufferin Royals make their first appearance in the Heinbuch; they'll be matched-up in an "all-CWOSSA" first-round game against Waterloo Collegiate.
The first-round schedule is as follows. CWOSSA teams are bolded:
Thursday
Galt Collegiate vs. Mother Teresa (Scarborough) - 3pm, HHHS
Cameron Heights vs. North Park (Brantford) - 4:30pm, HHHS
Loyola (Oakville) vs. Westmount (Hamilton) - 6:15pm, HHHS
Waterloo CI vs. Centre Dufferin (Shelburne) - 7:45pm, HHHS
Friday
St. Mary's (Kit.) vs. Cardinal Newman (Stoney Creek) - Noon, SMHS
J. Clarke Richardson (Ajax) vs. St. Thomas More (Hamilton) - 1:30pm, SMHS
Huron Heights (Kit.) vs. Oakwood (Toronto) - Noon, HHHS
St. Mary's (Hamilton) vs. Collingwood CVI - 1:30pm, HHHS
