D8 Junior Final: Top-Seeded Phoenix Run To Victory

I was assured before the game that the ' '12 ' on the Resurrection Junior Girls D8 Championship banner hanging in the Rez gym was actually from last year's championship during the "2011-12" school year.

They can add an " '11" now to that banner, I guess, as the Phoenix captured the 2012 District 8 crown with a convincing 48-26 victory over the third-seeded St. David Celtics yesterday evening at Resurrection.

Rez came out strong early, taking a slim three-point edge before Celia McGlynn hit a buzzer-beater three pointer to end the first quarter and give Rez a 14-8 advantage after one.

"There were certainly nervous emotions before the game began, but as soon as we started playing, everything fell into place and we became the team that we knew we were capable (of being)," said McGlynn.

"St. David's recent success certainly made us wary, but we were glad to be able to rise to the occassion in the D8 finals," she added.

The Phoenix certainly showed what they were capable of in the second quarter, forcing some timely turnovers and taking them the other way for lay-ups.  They used a 16-6 run over the second eight-minute quarter to take a 30-14 lead at halftime.

Rez would extend things to a 20-point lead after three quarter (40-20) and maintained that advantage throughout the fourth en route to the 48-26 final.

McGlynn paced the Phoenix with a 23-point, 5 rebound effort.  Kelsey Caza had a big-game down low for Rez with a 13-point, 10 rebound double-double.  Also hitting the scoresheet for Rez were Britney Haughton (6), Patricia Enrique (4), and Patricia McCullough (2).

St. David received 9 from Heather Sandall and 7 from Bobbi-Sue Hentges.  Maria Valencia (4), Sierra Dowling (4), and Abby Howard (2) rounded out the St. David scoring.

Resurrection will advance to next weekend's "AAAA" CWOSSA tournament while St. David will play at "AAA" CWOSSA in Brantford.
