D8 Wednesday: Senior Celtics Upset Phoenix

The St. David Celtics took advantage of a shorthanded Resurrection Phoenix squad on Monday, eking out a slim 47-46 win at Resurrection on Wednesday afternoon.

Despite starting forwards Tyler Bartley and Jacob Gilbert not in the lineup due to injury, the Phoenix led 34-27 before a big 13-0 surge in the third and early fourth quarters gave the Celtics a 6-point lead that they would not relinquish.  Patric McGlynn had a chance to win it for Rez at the buzzer, but this three-point attempt was off the mark.

Jake Winter had 18 to pace the Celtics, while Francis Samson added 8.  McGlynn had 16 and Onique Findlay 12 for the Phoenix.

In other senior action on Wednesday, the St. Mary's Eagles continued to steamroll the D8 opposition, posting an 88-17 win over Monsignor Doyle.  Feden Kidane (19), Efosa Agbonze (14) and Jermaine Lyle (13) led the way for the Eagles while Jamal Bell netted 12 for MDCSS.

The other senior tilt saw St. Benedict handle Rockway 66-40.  Tyler Moulton had 21 and Brenden Flannigan posted 16 in the win, while Will Russell had 10 for the Flames.

Watch out for the Monsignor Doyle Mustangs.

Adham Eleeda (17) and Henoak Albara (9) led the way for St. Mary's while Ryan Stafford had 15 and Yaser Seyed 13 for Doyle.

In other games, St. Benedict took out Rockway 64-24 on Wednesday to move to 2-1.  Justin Malnerich had a career-high 22 points while Zubair Seyed added 7.  Lukas Winter led the Flames with 8.

The other game saw St. David take out Resurrection by a 70-47 final.  The hot-shooting Celtics got four players in double-figures, including James McBride (18), George Dumitru (15), Thomas Lim (12) and Mitchell Lavigne (12).  Prince Dang had 11 and Nick Snider 9 for Rez.
